Shiny new thread, ladies :)

I have had Stilton - I think the nhs says it is ok now (although my midwife said not to eat it). I just try and go by the nhs website now as so many give conflicting advice. Although my dh is adamant I should have no alcohol despite everywhere seeming to say the odd glass is fine. While he has a bottle of wine, of course.

Congrats to everyone on your scans. I have my 16 week midwife appointment on Thursday, so a bit to go before the scan.

LyraSilvertongue · 08/10/2013 19:22

Emza, when I was first pregnant with DS1 the advice was that a few glasses of wine per week was fine. My GP even encouraged it. My boys have both turned out very bright and healthy so I guess the wine did them no harm. The advice has changed now but I'm choosing to ignore the change as there was no good reason for it.
Some research has shown that babies born to moderate drinkers (up to 8 units per week) turn out more intelligent than those born to abstainers.

Pram, I demand you get a smartphone.

Lyra - you appear to have seen the same research I have don't feel like quite such an irresponsible hag now

I'm as we speak enjoying myself 2 units worth of Hoegaarden Grin

emza78 · 08/10/2013 19:36

Wow I had no idea the official advice had changed, I remember going to a new local pregnant mum group last time when we were all about 7 months preggers and I was the only one out of about 10 that didn't have a (small) drink! I thought, am I being a mug here?!

Yum to Stilton! And apparently some types of Camembert are ok?

Jolleigh · 08/10/2013 19:38

Camembert is fine when baked...a fact I'm very much taking advantage of Grin

lumpylumps · 08/10/2013 19:43

I've had more alcohol than before too. Never exceeded 2 units but have had that most weeks rather than 3 glasses through the whole pregnancy. Other people are just so judgemental tho!! Like they have the right to tell you what you can and can't have!!

prambo2thereturn · 08/10/2013 19:44

Ooh, I forgot to say...midwife said my placenta's anterior with baby tucked well away behind it. She reckons I may not feel any movement 'for weeks yet'. It just makes me all the more excited! Smile

LyraSilvertongue · 08/10/2013 19:46

Glad it's not just me, Jolls. I did a lot of reading on the subject because I was curious as to why the advice changed. There doesn't seem to be a reason for it, just the government treating people like they're too stupid to be sensible so covering their backs with "avoid it altogether" to be on the safe side.
FAS babies simply are not born to moderate drinkers. And even among alcoholic women who drink heavily during pregnancy only a third of those babies will have FAS (according to what I've read).
Not suggesting anyone go out and get plastered, of course. I just think people should relax and have that glass of wine with dinner if they want it.

I've just poured a small glass of white in anticipation of bake-off starting in a minute Smile

Lyra I think DH is very worried about the toxoplasmosis risk, and we did a trade off, were I will avoid steak (I could have it well done but yuck) but can eat cheese and cold meats, sushi etc. seemed a fair trade and keeps him quiet! But occasionally I could murder a juicy rare steak.

I have my scan a week in Friday, can't wait to see the lobster again.

President camabert is make with pasteurised milk so is fine to eat! It's one of the nicest too!

Rockchick1984 · 08/10/2013 19:53

Pram so glad it went well! Have only just come online since this morning, I would have texted if I'd realised you hadn't been around all day :)

Re alcohol I've had the occasional glass after the 1st trimester. Most of the baby's important development is during the first 12 weeks so I stayed away from it then, after that it's mainly just growth so the odd drink won't do any harm. Although I had a glass of champagne at the weekend and Little Pebble kicked and squirmed I'm taking that as a sign of approval

A week to go until my 20 week scan!

LyraSilvertongue · 08/10/2013 19:58

Becca, have one secretly when he's not there Wink Tbh, if you regularly eat rare or medium steak you've probably been exposed to toxoplasmosis in the past and will be immune.
Btw we're 20-week scan buddies Grin

Lyra I wholeheartedly agree. The mw never would but if u look at the evidence base for one or two glasses here and there it's non existent. I barely did before 12 weeks but now I'll have wine a couple of times a week. Enjoy. I've also not seen the list but sure I've prob had some illicit items. Had some port salut tonight and only afterwards did I think uh oh..but Damn it was good. no MacDonalds yet this week but good to hear MCDonald's fever is spreading Smile

Beccadugs · 08/10/2013 20:13

Hooray Lyra, and I probably will, as the craving will get too much!

Apprentice I had a Big Mac for lunch! YUM.

Made delish chicken and ham chowder (BBC Good FOod, hope you approve Pram) totally stuffed, but it was so good!

lumpylumps · 08/10/2013 20:15

I love the nhs website!!! I can have stilton! Mmmmmmm just made my night!!

MummyPig24 · 08/10/2013 20:30

pram I'm so glad everything is good with the baby. Really sorry about your mum though.

I could jump for Joy, Camembert is allowed if it's baked?!!!

I haven't drunk any alcohol this pregnancy and I don't think I did last time either. Having not known I was pregnant the first time and totally abusing my body and poor ds too, we were so lucky that he is fine I just can't face risking it now.

Parents evening was great. Whatever doubts I have about my parenting, knowing my children are happy, popular and well behaved at school really helps boost my confidence.

NoMaybeAboutIt · 08/10/2013 20:31

Prammy I'm so so happy all is well. And that Prambino is ok too Thanks

I too have had the odd glass of red. I also read the research related to higher IQ. I just can't see how eating sensibly can cause harm. I only buy food from places I trust, so my logic tells me I will not fall ill. I would never judge anyone on their choices during pregnancy, but I too feel like some people can't help but comment!! We are going out for FILs 60th and I am going to have a glass of vino. I'm already playing out the comments from MIL in my head Grin.

Ladies, I am so happy. I've had salad and avocado for tea with a bit of garlic bread. It felt so good. So very good.

commsgirl · 08/10/2013 20:46

Maybs garlic bread is the answer. So happy for you and your little meal :)

Pram so happy everything's okay with minipram! Sorry to hear about your mum but I bet she's loving having you there x

Becca glad everything was so positive for you today!

LyraSilvertongue · 08/10/2013 21:03

Well done, Maybe. May it continue Smile

That's lovely Mummypig. Glad they're doing so well.

I cannot get comfortable this evening. My pelvis and back ache constantly, whatever position I sit or lie in. I might get into bed soon. Time to invest in a giant pillow I think.

BadlyWrittenPoem · 08/10/2013 21:03

I'm not sure when the alcohol advice changed but it was definitely "allowed" in my first pregnancy as I can remember someone on a board I was on asking about it she said that she'd mentioned having a drink on another board and people had been really horrified and it transpired that the American advice was no alcohol and she'd been on a board with lots of Americans. (Doesn't apply to me as I don't drink anyway so haven't been paying close attention but what I've read seems to say that they've decided that they "don't know what amount is safe" so advise having none.)

SuperMuddle · 08/10/2013 21:48

Hi all,
Good to hear your scan went well, pram. How horribly sad about the suicide though.

I'm afraid I'm having a bit of a shitty week so far, feeling generally ragey and depressed. Partially hormones I'm sure, but I've been trying not to inflict myself on my poor dh too much. Doesn't help that I work with the public and have to be polite, friendly and smiley at all times. I'm knackered and I want to break something. Grrr.

MTBMummy · 08/10/2013 22:06

Evening all, just to add my 2p in the alcohol debate. I spoke to a friend who is a nurse and her comment was that a everyone's tolerance to alcohol is different they have to resort giving advice (like blanket bans) so that those that may suffer from one glass of wine through out the whole pregnancy can't sue.

And On the steak debate, rare and even blue steak is ok if form a reputable butcher or restaurant. But Mr whippy is definitely out.

OwlinaTree · 08/10/2013 22:13

No Mr whippy!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't think I've had one tho. Is that just any soft ice cream is out?

OwlinaTree · 08/10/2013 22:15

What about the ice cream at harvester? That comes from a machine? Is that banned too?

OwlinaTree · 08/10/2013 22:15

Can you have brown cows?
