Shiny new thread, ladies :)

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
faithfulandtruthful · 08/10/2013 16:29

BWP Thanks for the link, my child is going to be as thick as two short planks, I'm Dairy and Wheat/Gluten intolerant and not a big fan of fish which leaves eggs, which I have gone off to a degree since being preggers and meat/poultry, which I try to keep low in my diet due to it being not terribly environmentally sound. Before pregnancy I was taking kelp and algae supplements to help regulate my cycles but have stopped since finding out I was pregnant. hmm...

Also when I found out I was preggers I stopped taking omega 3 (otherwise known as cod liver oil) because I thought you were supposed to keep oily fish consumption low in pregnancy due to the high level of vit A in it but when I was looking at the pregnancy plus vits they all have fish oil in them. I am now confused. I have stared taking vegan omega 3 instead, just in case, can anyone explain?

Fox make sure your container is clean (eg. if you use a jam jar there isn't any sugar in there to skew the results) and doesn't leak (I double up with a zip lock bag just in case). Best of luck!

Block, the last time I checked, the most recent checks on eggs found no salmonella inside the eggs and salmonella on the outside of the shell of one so I consider that the risk of soft eggs is not really significant and that you are actually more at risk from handling eggs than from eating a soft yolk and therefore don't follow that specific piece of advice. In my fourth pregnancy I actually lived for three days on almost nothing but soldiers dipped in runny yolk as it was the only thing I could eat. DH spent a lot of time cooking eggs!

Prawns and sushi are fine as long as they are not raw (and raw sushi is okay if it's been frozen) - that is the official advice.

(I'm not ignoring all the advice BTW but the advice I agree with doesn't affect my eating habits as for example I don't eat shark or marlin or raw steak or more than two portions of oily fish a week anyway.)

lumpylumps · 08/10/2013 16:37

Afternoon all. I'm officially an spd cripple!! Saw the physio this afternoon and she was very nice oohd and aahd in all the right places, had a prod and a poke. And basically told my my pelvis is shot for the remainder of my pregnancy. She's ordering me a support belt to try to make things more stable. Looks a bit better than the big band of tubi grip I got last time!!

NoMaybeAboutIt · 08/10/2013 16:43

Oh Lumpy. That's rubbish. But at least you're in the system now.

F&T I take the pregnacare plus ones with the omega capsules. I don't get it either!

I don't think I've been getting enough of any nutrients lately, but hopefully I'll make up for it.

Beccadugs · 08/10/2013 16:43

You've got enough for a double cheese burger at Maccy D's with what you've got left Mummypig! Grin

Thanks everyone, all you good feelings have made me cry!

FoxMulder · 08/10/2013 16:44

So, Badly, what's the craic with something like smoked salmon? Does that count as raw, and so only ok if formerly frozen? (Sure, I could go look this up, but you are the authority on these things Grin)

I used to eat shark when I was in Australia. It was often the cheapest fish in the chippy. But I don't even think you could get it here if you tried.

Oh, poor lumpy you are in a bad way aren't you! Flowers

BadlyWrittenPoem · 08/10/2013 16:45

F&T having read the mumsnet discussion about the article which also links to a BBC news article, it seems the mumsnet article is actually rather misleading and scaremongery. The research referred to found that 2/3rds of 1000 pregnant women in the south west were "mildly" iodine deficient and that this seemed to result in an average IQ 3 points below the average of the children of the non-deficient mothers so it seems likely that unless you were significantly deficient it wouldn't really have a huge impact.

If you're taking a pregnancy multivitamin that will have iodine in it and your body stores iodine so if you were taking iodine rich supplements before pregnancy too then I doubt you need to worry. If you were very deficient then you would know about it as you would have goitre and a really big neck.

I think I am having a tendency to overly worry in this pregnancy because it was unexpected so I wasn't taking any supplements until I found out at three weeks plus I am still breastfeeding which also creates additional nutritional needs and I have a small gap between pregnancies (during which I have was breastfeeding) so haven't had time for my body to restore any lack caused by the previous pregnancy plus I was losing weight for the entirety of the gap (unintentionally lost about 20% of my post birth weight in about ten months) which makes me worry that my diet may not have been adequately supplying all my nutritional needs.

NoMaybeAboutIt · 08/10/2013 16:46

Smoked salmon is cured, so essentially 'cooked' as I understand it Fox. It's not on the list of banned foods my mw gave me.

Blockette · 08/10/2013 16:47

Owch lumpy that doesn't sound fun!!! - I'm glad she looked after you well.

BadlyWrittenPoem · 08/10/2013 16:48

Fox, I can't remember what the reasoning was but I think when I read about it on the NHS website it reckoned that smoked salmon was okay - I remember that with fish it needed to have been either cooked or frozen because it kills off some parasite or something like that.

BadlyWrittenPoem · 08/10/2013 16:51

DH has some kind of cod liver oil which specifically says on it that it is safe for children and pregnant women so I don't know whether that means that usually it isn't and something has been done to that specific one to make sure it doesn't contain too much vitamin A or whether they all don't have too much and it just says because otherwise people might naturally assume that it does.

BadlyWrittenPoem · 08/10/2013 16:52

Here we are - NHS choices says smoked fish is fine: www.nhs.uk/chq/Pages/eating-smoked-fish-and-cold-meats-during-pregnancy.aspx?CategoryID=54&SubCategoryID=216#close

BadlyWrittenPoem · 08/10/2013 16:54

And here's the bit about sushi and raw fish (which must be were I got the parasites idea from): www.nhs.uk/chq/Pages/is-it-safe-to-eat-sushi-during-pregnancy.aspx

BadlyWrittenPoem · 08/10/2013 16:57

Also, here www.nhs.uk/chq/Pages/917.aspx?CategoryID=54&SubCategoryID=130#close it says, "Some countries advise pregnant women not to eat cold meats (for example, salami, chorizo and parma ham) or smoked fish because of the risk that the food may contain listeria bacteria. In the UK, pregnant women are not advised to avoid these foods because the risk of infection is so low. However, if you’re concerned, you may choose to avoid them." which contradicts the mumsnet advice that we are supposed to avoid salami and parma ham. I'm unimpressed by the quality of a lot of the mumsnet articles. (Although I know the one on hyperemesis is unusually good compared with your typical article on it on a pregnancy related site.)

FoxMulder · 08/10/2013 16:59

Any sushi I've ever had had had smoked salmon or tinned tuna in it - never proper raw fish anyway.

I'm starting to get a bit worried about Pram. It's 5pm, getting on a bit.

Beccadugs · 08/10/2013 17:01

Ahhhh! I don't know what the pin for our sky box is, and I can't watch anymore Midwives as I'm onto the post watershed (moved to 9pm) episodes....

LyraSilvertongue · 08/10/2013 17:01

Block, you've been depriving yourself for nothing! I've even had raw oysters this pg as I did throughout my first pg but I wouldn't advise anyone else to eat them. But as others have said, most seafood is fine.

BWP I know what you mean. I'm on number one but I have M.E. and use my diet to control my symptoms (by being dairy/gluten free etc) but I do worry that the years I was ill due to IBS being intolerant to Gluten and dairy has taken it's toll on my bodies ability to gain what it needed from my food and thus left supplies low for my baby. Before my bfp I was on a myriad of supplements to help me 'get better' and they were obviously doing a good job as I got upduffed as soon as we stopped using contraception (I was worried because I had irregular cycles), which must mean I have a reasonably good supply of vits and minerals.

You also must have a suitable amount, after all you have got upduffed whilst BF, your body must be in good condition! I think what I am trying to say is try to turn it on it's head and think about how your body obviously is functioning well enough to sustain all three of you, that is pretty mind blowingly awesome Grin if you ask me.

BadlyWrittenPoem · 08/10/2013 17:17

Thanks F&T, that is a useful way to look at it which I hadn't thought of. Thanks

Blockette · 08/10/2013 17:18

Well I never!
Lyra - DH will be getting the silent treatment at least - and he is no longer in charge of "The List"

Thanks for all of your links BWP - really helpful! - and I agree with faithful you wouldn't have conceived so easily if your body wasn't ready.

Ok so that's food he's been lying to me about, what about exercise? DH has stopped me from riding my horses, and the first MW we saw wouldn't really commit either way (she said "it's up to you really, but I wouldn't advise someone to take it up"). - what do you lot think?

MummyPig24 · 08/10/2013 17:19

Where is pram? Getting worried.

MummyPig24 · 08/10/2013 17:20

So far off the banned list I have eaten medium rare steak and soft boiled egg. That's all I would risk though.

LyraSilvertongue · 08/10/2013 17:23

Blockette, I know nothing on the subject but as there's a risk of falling while horse riding I wouldn't do it.

OP posts:
LyraSilvertongue · 08/10/2013 17:28

I'm worrying about Pram. Hoping it's just that her internet is down or something. Or she's gone to work with DH.

OP posts:
NoMaybeAboutIt · 08/10/2013 17:29

I'm really worried too Sad

Block I'm sure horse riding isn't really advised during pregnancy, but other exercise is good!!
