hi everybody!

catgirl, have a great holiday

i'll have to have a look around for maternity trousers...cheers for all the tips on where to get them from

i seem to be tired all the time at the moment...if im not eating then im sleeping lol.

whiffy · 04/08/2006 11:21

2 packs of maternity pads saw me through last time...

Oh Highlander, hate to break it to you but you're in for rude awakening vis a viz 1&4 on your list....peeing becomes the mother of all nightmares when you've a young baby - for the first week or so the best place to do it is in the bath (I used to run baths just for this purpose)...then you have the fun of having to sort out something with the baby at exactly the time you want to go for a pee so you end up desperately trying to hold it all in, which, with stretched pelvic floor, is not the easiest thing in the world! It does get better, but it gets a whole lot worse first . Only a few weeks ago I was having lunch with a colleague and we were talking about the very best things about coming back to work after having a baby. Top of list was 'having a coffee when you fancy it and being able to drink it while it's hot' and then 2nd place was 'being able to go for a pee when you want to' . Both of us agreed these two came in at higher priority than earning money from working

And the weight thing is down to genes and luck I think. we had an NCT reunion when our babies were about 4 weeks old and one of the girls swanned in in skintight jeans and (I kid you not) a bare midriff and ironing board stomach. She wafted round saying "really don't know why people moan about getting back into shape, I mean the weight is just dropping off me". I followed her round the room, holding back the other mums as they prepared to pounce on her with knives, knitting needles and breast pumps. I think there's an old adage 9 months putting it on, 9 months getting it off. Thus emboldened I remember rashly booking my wedding for 9 months aqfter DS was born. Turned out to be almost 6 months too early in terms of getting back to shape. Ho Hum.

Gemmity - enjoy the break before LO arrives. If you are going to be in London try out the marble arch M&S - they have the most fab maternity cullottes and trousers in soft jersey fabric.

I am also enjoying being miesryguts going round telling everyone how fab I think this grotty weather is...

Suspect I am in for some fun and games from DS when LO arrives - he asked what the baby bath support thingy was that I bought this week and when I explained he tried to sit in it himself, looked up at me and said "I'm the baby, mummy" uh oh....

whiffy · 04/08/2006 11:58

Oh highlander, just remembered you're already a mum....does that really mean you lost weight straight away and didn't have any peeing problems? I might have to hit you with breast pump if so.....maybe there's hope for me this time round...

DogMum · 04/08/2006 13:35

Thanks for the peeing tips, whiffy. Highlander may already know this, but there are plenty of new mums to benefit from your wisdom. I must say I don't really fancy peeing in the bath. (Will I change my mind!) I read somewhere that spraying warm water down there everytime you go helps. Does that make any sense?

Also, did the girl with the washboard stomach have one before? I know someone who got into trousers she hadn't fitted into for eight years shortly after the birth. I haven't kept anything for that long, but don't mind buying new stuff in smaller sizes. Somehow can't see it happening to me.

Swizzler · 04/08/2006 14:04

I'm after you with the breastpump Whiffy if any ends up with a washboard stomach

Keep coming with the post-pg advice - there's also a usefull 'advice to new mums' thread on the (I think) Pregnancy section of the website.

Swizzler · 04/08/2006 14:34

No it isn't, it's in Childbirth (can't do links!)

faithb · 04/08/2006 18:03

Hi everyone - just thought I'd finally join in and introduce myself.

Our first baby (a boy) is due October 25th. I'm 35, so blaming my age for feeling all the aches and pains We're really excited - and scared - the pregnancy was planned after 12-13 years together and only 2 years married. Neither of us thought we ever wanted children then suddenly both got the urge.

Not the best timing in some ways, as hubby is on a degree training to be a Speech & Language Therapist, which is really demanding. But good in some ways as there's some financial support from the NHS and good childcare rebates. I already work only part-time hours (in print production) so although money is tight for us, at least I have lots of time to devote to this new adventure!

I will try not to waffle on too much. I thought I should get around to joining, as Mumsnet often gives some of the best answers for things I've Googled. I mostly chat on BabyCentre but I think I've got room in my life for more discussion groups

wuzzlefraggle · 04/08/2006 18:18

welcome to the thread faithb! wishing you a healthy 3rd trimester
this is our first too...do you know what your having?
all the ladies on this thread are very helpful and friendly

oh, and feel free to waffle all you like..we all do

mamado · 04/08/2006 19:15

Welcome faithb! I'm a newish to the thread and everyone has been so lovely and welcoming - I'm sure you'll pick up some great tips

As for post pregnancy tips - I'd never heard the peeing in the bath one [I was in hospital for a week last time due to poor dd being in intensive care so it was only showers] but it sounds worth trying - anything soothing is good! I found lavender essentail oil in the bath water good for healing and mega-doses of arnica before [during if you manage!] and after the birth very good for bruising.

Before you all go and buy birthing balls, unless you plan to use it before the birth, check your hospital doesn't supply them. I had one in my room at St Thomas's [the home from home area] and you have to take half the house with you to hospital anyway without a birthing ball too ....but certainly take a pillow as if there are any, hospital ones are grim!

hi millie
i'm an osteopath for pregnant women and babies, (as most of the mnetters know having bored them silly), but i've never heard of this type of pain from any of my patients. if it was lower down you'd think it was your pubic symphysis but it sounds too high for that. i get a pain on the right side of my lower abdo over the ligament when the baby kicks which is quite bad but doesn't sound like yours. can you ask another midwife/health visitor/ doctor?

DogMum · 05/08/2006 11:31

Welcome faithb. Hope you're enjoying your pregnancy apart from the aches and pains, although I've never heard anyone blame aches and pains on being young before. We're expecting our first too on Oct 21, a boy or girl (hopefully.)

Milliee, I really feel for you in so much pain. Is it possible to take it easy over the weekend? If your midwife is dismissing it, I'd ask to see someone else - particularly if you've got our resident expert baffled as well (and no Marthahm - we're not bored, we're grateful.)

Hope everyone has a comfortable weekend. (Sorry it sounds middle-aged, but actually I think comfortable is good at the moment.)

Oh and Milliee, how are you sleeping? I bought a bean-filled pillow meant for supporting b'feeding babies and have found that putting my top leg on it takes the weight off my pelvis at night.

marthahm · 05/08/2006 22:21

has anyone else started producing milk? i know one person mentioned it a while back. if it's only a tiny bit is it suddenly going to increase in the middle of work or something?? do i need to be prepared with breast pads or is this as bad as it gets?
as you can imagine this is truly a moment when i am greatful for having this website

Seona1973 · 06/08/2006 09:36

you will be producing colostrum just now which may leak a bit. My boobs leaked quite a bit (mostly at night when I was leaning on them on my side) the last time but havent had so much this time. Different women will leak different amounts - might be best to get some breast pads in anyway!!

faithb · 06/08/2006 16:09

Thanks for the friendly welcomes

Aches & pains now subsided a bit (til the next batch) - must be the effect of being called young

Seona1973 · 06/08/2006 17:29

Have started to get my arse in gear and have managed to order our travel system from the Glasgow Pram Centre: Chicco CT0.1 Trio Autofix

Have also decided to hire a TENS machine again - dont know if it made a difference the last time but dont want to find out at the last minute that it did help and then not have one to hand - have managed to find one for £23 (includes post/packing) for 6 weeks hire: Tens Hire

I just need to sort out the Raspberry leaf tea or tablets and we will be just about ready. We havent bought much really and we arent sorting out the nursery just now as baby will be in our room for at least a few months anyway.

We are getting our garage converted in the near future and if our luck is like usual it will be just in time for the birth!! We are going to use it as a playroom so that all dd's junk can be shifted out of our living room and we can reclaim some of it again.

hi all. millie-glad you are feeling better.
Gemmitygem-I like the idea of all your work mates dressing in the colour they think the baby will be. Really nice goodbye. That is the downside of knowing the sex-the 'guess the sex' sweepstates are really good fun!

I don't think I am going to bother with hiring a tens this time around.

Think I had two grobags last time and that was enough. Will definitely use them again.

Marthahm-I got through packets of the lovely maternity pads though had only brought a couple of packs to hospital. DH had to rush out and buy more. I did have a fast and furious labour though, so not sure if that contributed to bleeding more than is usual (lovely subject I know!)

we had a lovely weekend-DD's birthday picnic in a nearby park. Weather was great. Only trouble is it co-incided with the pride parade so lots of people were stuck in traffice for HOURS. Still it meant the party went on from 11-5pm as people kept arriving at different times so DD had a ball!

Won't be logging on after today this week. Sister's wedding on Saturday so off for the pre-wedding preparation week at my parents house.
So have a good week all. I am going to make sure I drink LOADS of water from now on in-it was about this time in my pregnancy with DD that I had a visit from Farmer Giles and it was AGONY!! On that happy note I am off!

Gingeme · 07/08/2006 12:45

Good afternoon ladies. Got back from my parents last night. Had a wonderful relaxing week. Dont think Ive slept so much in the passed 28 weeks. My 2 year old ds was on his best behaviour and slept in every morning till atleast 9am. Bliss!. Just had a quick read through the thread. Glad there are no major happenings and you are all reasonably well. Welcome to all the new ladies glad you have joined us. This is a lovely group of ladies. Got my 28 week check and glucose test on Wednesday morning. Not looking forward to no breakfast and having to drink Lukozade at 9 am YUK!Oh and on a brighter note my ds did a pooh and wee twice on his potty this week Yeah so proud of him. Well off to refill the empty cupboards now. Holiday over.

Swizzler · 07/08/2006 12:54

Welcome faithb! I'm not sure there's ever an ideal time to have a baby - if everything else were perfect, I'd just be worrying that something would go seriously wrong in the future (see my naturally cheery disposition ). I'm expecting my first too, on the 12th Oct. Less than 10 weeks to go now

Milliee: glad the pain's getting better. My baby seems to be finding a few different positions as well - I just hope it settles for a nice head-down position in the last few weeks.

Also have one of those bean bag things - they're great!

wuzzlefraggle · 07/08/2006 18:35

hi every1!

millie, glad to hear that your feeling a bit better

just to update you all of the midwife appointment today...alls well with the baby, got to hear heartbeat again, midwife had to practically wrestle with my arm to get blood out (ouch!!). only bad-ish thing was that she said that she detected traces of blood and protien in my wee, so its got to be sent off to check for infection, but not to worry about it as if there is an infection, it can be sorted with anti biotics.

hope that every1 is well...when are braxton hicks meant to start?

BENDYB · 08/08/2006 07:45
