Thanks for the language tips, I won't speak Spanish to him then (I can barely speak it anyway!) but make sure when I have Spanish friends round they chat to him in Spanish and at nursery he will have it.

Speaking of which, those of of you who watched the midwives programme.... Should I avoid it? Sounds from what you've said it was similar to my situation (although I won't get a professional interpreter and hopefully have a nicer husband!) I was going to watch it on catch up tomorrow...

I had it for dinner sparkeleigh and still managed to have enough left over for 5 meals (for two) in the freezer!!! It was delicious and so cheap to make as we already had the store cupboard stuff!! Thank youuuu

Natalieand · 03/09/2013 22:30

tarlia and orange if u/someone wishes to return to work before the specified date on a sick note then they need to make another gp appt and get a separate certificate which is 'fit to return to work' dh had the same recently and had to get one to return just one day early x

Natalieand · 03/09/2013 22:31

umlauf no need to avoid if based on language alone. The husband was just a knob regardless of any language barriers, well that's the impression he gave me anyway x

ananikifo · 03/09/2013 22:39

Tarlia I'm glad I helped. DH studied linguistics and it is generally accepted that although multilingual children may be a bit delayed int he beginning they end up naturally learning all the languages they are naturally exposed to. I've actually lost most of my Croatian, because my parents ended up speaking English with me so I would definitely encourage any expats to continue speaking their mother tongue at home.

umlauf I've replied to you on the other thread but honestly the couple on midwives were really weird and they gave me creepy vibes that I doubt you would. Is your DH's Spanish good enough to translate for you?

HotSoupDumpling · 03/09/2013 22:54

Clapham, we've put up baby bookshelves (picture ledges from Ikea)!

Re Muslins, do NOT get mothercare ones. We bought John Lewis ones as my friend said they were the softest. We were given mothercare ones as a gift and they really are rougher, and with a looser weave. I wouldn't want to put them next to my face for a long time.

That husband in Midwives!!! The way he was taking about his wife set my teeth on edge ('I'm really pleased with her'. Wanker), even DH was a bit taken aback!

Hello Skull. I'm measuring small but haven't had a scan yet. Good luck with the induction!

claphammama · 03/09/2013 23:04

wow... 155 posts already on this thread??? Where do I start? And doubt this thread will see a baby at this pace!

DP's birthday cake was delicious Grin Grin Grin - so I now believe that baking is accessible to humans! thanks for encouraging me! chickie definitely give it a try! And please post some Nigerian recipes on FB - would love to try some (also not a fan of semolina though)

pink I had my WC jab earlier today. It didn't hurt at all although my arm feels a bit sore now. Nothing too uncomfortable though

About bilingual children - my DS is bilingual, we spoke only Italian to him at home (mine is native standard though umlauf) and he picked up English from the nursery, TV etc... Language was never a problem although he tends to respond in English when someone speaks Italian to him. I never introduced a third language as it was just too complicated - it's hard enough switching between two languages with him. However, this evening, he asked me totally out of the blue "mummy can you teach me Polish please?" Where on earth did this come from?? I never speak it in front of him as have no Polish friends and no family here and I totally forget I'm Polish most of the times, actually struggle to find words after 20 years when I have to speak it! How weird! Also, a great example - there is a Chinese boy in DS's class who didn't speak a word of English last September. Not even hello or goodbye. He is fluent now and speaks with perfect English accent and in full correct sentences. We all find it so funny! They are like sponges - honestly, don't worry about them being left behind. And I just remembered that my friend who studied languages with me at uni ended up doing PhD about bilingual children but I never asked what her conclusions were...

warlin hope the baby warlin turns soon... x When is your next appointment?

And what fantastic news for you falcon! Smile

flyer yes, you are bonkers Grin

tarlia good you have your date now!

And welcome all newcomers and lurkers. Really sorry if I'm forgetting someone... all 155 posts are now muddled up in my head...

claphammama · 03/09/2013 23:07

ah and I'm also a big fan of John Lewis muslins! I knew I forgot something extremely important Grin

hotsoup you couldn't have put it better (husband in the midwives) - what a wanker...

skullbabe · 03/09/2013 23:08

That husband on midwives was seriously creepy - but I did wonder if there was an element of "lost in translation" - he was Russian and English was not his first language so maybe he didn't mean things the way they came across........but then so many of us felt uncomfortable with him - it was just really weird Confused

claphammama · 03/09/2013 23:12

hmmm... his English was very good and he clearly said "she won't have any pain relief"... don't think it was a language issue, just the attitude. I was also shocked they decided not to have any scans throughout the pregnancy...

Flyer747 · 03/09/2013 23:16

Yeah total pair of freaks that couple on midwives! Smile

PseudoBadger · 03/09/2013 23:16

I'll be watching it tomorrow on Day 2 of doing not very much....

Haylebop12 · 03/09/2013 23:27

That husband made me feel uncomfortable too. I understand that he had to translate for his wife but it was the constant use of "we". No darling you are not pushing a baby out your vagina, your opinions count a little but ultimately its not your decision.

So I've finally started making room for baby...

I came to the conclusion today that I definitely don't forget im pregnant but I do seem to forget I'm actually going to get a baby. If that makes sense. Got the feeling the school mothers will be thinking "oh my god, she's STILL pregnant" on Monday morning! I certainly feel like that!

Very jealous of all you with second/third languages and that your children have had/will have that opportunity. Languages was my weakest at school. Our children will get a choice of accent... Mancunian or Black Country Grin

SeriousStuff · 03/09/2013 23:57

Hi Tarlia - you're not being rude at all! Basically, DC will get Welsh from me, my family, friends and school (as it's my first language), English from DH (although he's learning Welsh too and will take this opportunity to enhance his own vocabulary), in-laws, other friends and also in school and we just wanted to take advantage of a child's amazing ability to take on languages by introducing a third.

I wish my parents had done this with me, because you get to a certain age when learning languages becomes a chore! I only spoke/understood Welsh until the age of 5 but when English was introduced, I just don't remember actively learning it - it just happened and over the years I became completely fluent in both.

We decided on Spanish because you can use it in Europe and South America, plus it's fast becoming a force in North America too. It's also fairly transferable to languages such as Italian etc...

Tarlia · 04/09/2013 00:52

Clapham that's fantastic that your bilingual DS is interested in learning a third language. Will you try to do that with him? I'm guessing he still speaks Italian with dad and is beginning to learn French at school too!?

SeriousS that will be fantastic. I wish DS second language was more transferable but they do say once those paths in the brain are open, like you at 5 it becomes easy to take on more language.

ana such a shame you ultimately lost your MT. Do you pick it up again if visiting Croatia though?

Won't be long now until you meet little shark, hayley!

Who was thinking about calling baby Ray, it's gone? I think it really suits classic middle names like James, Edward Thomas etc If you are still a bit wobbly over Ray, how about Jay?

Tarlia · 04/09/2013 00:54

Oh and this is me awake for a loo run after an hours sleep, but body wouldn't turn off, so now another hour has gone Confused. Not enough napping today it seems.

SeriousStuff · 04/09/2013 01:04

I've napped too much today and then eaten way too much sugar. Will be another couple of hours before I feel tired I suspect...

Tarlia · 04/09/2013 02:14

Urg, 30 min reading my kindle, 45 min fidgeting in the dark, still no sleep. It has reminded me of my pregnancy insomnia that I had in my first pregnancy though. Feel lucky not to have that symptom this time and feel sorry for those that do.

SeriousStuff · 04/09/2013 02:33

Good luck Tarlia I'm off to try and sleep!

Natalieand · 04/09/2013 06:14

What clever kids u lot have! Dd only speaks English but then again dh and it English as are our families and we live In England so she hasn't had an opportunity to speak another language, I admire those that do though, very clever :-)

I just slept from 10.30-6 with only 1 wee break at 1am its practically a miracle I feel so refreshed!!

Dd back at pre school today and I have consultant and scan at 10.30 . Another peek at the little (still nameless man)

Have a lovely day everyone I will catch up with everything tonight xx

MrsHoratioNelson · 04/09/2013 06:38

Got out of bed at half four after tossing and turning for an hoir. Now I have to "get up" and go to work Sad

Three more days until mat leave...

Tarlia · 04/09/2013 06:45

Good morning MotherShips. Hope you all had a better night than me! Off to the hospital this morning for my weekly bloods and monitoring, wish me luck.

Nat enjoy your scan this morning. Always lovely to see them and get another picture though all squished up now :)

HotSoupDumpling · 04/09/2013 06:51

Good luck Tarlia!

Another disturbed night here. Random parts of my body are boiling, other bits re cold and clammy. Delightful.

OrangeBlossom2 · 04/09/2013 06:59

Good luck today Nat and Tarlia.
Didn't know that about fitness to work notes, interesting. I will let her know if she tries to come in early.

Have a good day all!

OrangeBlossom2 · 04/09/2013 07:03

Hmm not sure you do need a fit note as long as your employer agrees you can come back... link the head certainly wouldn't say no!

Tarlia · 04/09/2013 07:27

Thank you!

Ah, sorry for the misinformation, orange. Seems its all changed with the new system of 'fit notes' rather than the old style 'sick note'.
