This thread is ridiculously fast-moving at the moment! Welcome to newbies Smile

Pseudo I've bought peppermint tablet things too (and deffo spent at least £60 on hospital bag stuff) - do you know if they really work, as I can remember from section with dd that the trapped wind was awful afterwards? I also got arnica tablets but fear they are a bit woo and won't work!

Haylebop12 · 04/09/2013 22:36

I've got one small pack if size ones, some in hosp bag, then a 2 packets and a box of size twos.

ananikifo · 04/09/2013 22:40

natalie this colleague spends all day talking about stuff, as in things. We had a day where we both had admin to do in the office and were alone together for the whole day, and I heard about cheeky wipes, Lansinoh, whatever pram she bought (wasn't paying attention), pampers nappies, tommy tippee bottles (isn't just the normal ones to get?), christening suits, and gifts and cakes. I also just bought a house so I heard about her new oak furniture and the curtains that cost £1000 just for the fabric. I'm not too proud to admit to people that we are furnishing the new house with furniture from DH's parents, and that we didn't do NCT because of the cost, and a lot of our baby stuff is either used or bought on sale or we're waiting to see if we need it. Anyway by the end of the day she offered to bring me a bunch of stuff and again I'm not too proud to say yes, so she appeared with an unused car seat which would have been spare, some car window shades, and the Lansinoh. She told one of my friends in the office that she was giving it to me because she knew money was tight for me.

I was in the baby's room sorting out clothes and drawers for the last hour and I realised that I haven't touched her pile of stuff because the nipple cream weirds me out so I think I'll just bite the bullet and get my own tube, lol.

char1eston · 04/09/2013 22:45

I would definitely use the nipple cream. In fact, I take everything I'm given. I had about 4 tubes of lansinoh on the go at once last time round - they were all in different places around the house or in the change bag. It would only be the end that would have been touched by someone so you could squeeze out the first bit and disinfect?
Although I've bought a couple of new baby grows, pretty much everything we have is 2nd hand this time around. I just don't see the point in spending loads of money on new stuff. We were extremely fortunate to have been given a bugaboo with dd! By someone we didn't even know.
It's entirely individual choice though and I can understand why people want to buy everything new.

char1eston · 04/09/2013 22:47

We don't have a crib but we do have a hammock as well as a Moses basket. It was amazing for getting dd to nap during the day without me carrying her round the cemetery in a sling!

roxvox · 04/09/2013 22:59

ana I agree with char1eston ... Squeeze the end out of it and wipe it over with an antibacterial wipe, then I'd put it in my change bag as a back up. The thing that would annoy me is that fact that this woman felt the need to express to someone else that you're strapped for cash. DH and I saved up quite a lot before we started TTC and we haven't touched a penny of it yet as I've been as vigilant as I can about purchasing things staggered over the months and only buying when reduced/only buying things I truly need/buying second hand or seconds. I wrote a list the other day of the big items we've bought and how much they should have been and we've saved almost £1300. Basically (with the big items) we've saved more than we've spent, which is quite pleasing.

Sorry, I have gone off on a rant there. But just because you aren't prepared to waste money doesn't necessarily mean that your strapped for cash and in need of help!

Textbook I'm hoping they work - the IBS tablets i sometimes take have peppermint oil in and they work so hopefully these will be similar. The wind was agonising last time.... I also have peppermint tea.

Flyer747 · 04/09/2013 23:24

Totally agree with you rox and charleston although its a personal decision.

We've saved lots of money buying second hand, and it's not that I'm skint I would just rather spend my money elsewhere on family holidays or save it for the future. We bought new furniture for the nursery however we only did this because I couldn't find any nice second hand stuff otherwise I would have done. I understand why people like to buy new but to me second hand is perfectly fine.

PseudoBadger · 04/09/2013 23:27

I'm starving! Eat or sleep eat or sleep??

Flyer747 · 04/09/2013 23:30

Eat! DP just got some chips from the chippy!!! Totally dirty at this time of night, they were bloody lush Grin

PseudoBadger · 04/09/2013 23:32

Omg chips would be amazing! I think I'll have to settle for cheese on toast.

OrangeBlossom2 · 04/09/2013 23:33

Ana I agree with fix and charleston as long as hasn't been open for ages.

Natalie glad the baby hasn't continued growing too rapidly.

Boots do extra points and send vouchers if in the parenting club, have a look at their website. The points don't expire and are handy for when things are tight, I have £30 to spend, mostly earnt from buying baby things and vitamins.

Welcome newbies!

We have deliberated about sleeping arrangements and are going to go for the snuz pod as it looks nicer the pan the bed next and is better quality materials. Delivery nt until end of October so if baby is early we will use the pushchair carry cot for a night or two and/or buy the £35 Moses basket from John Lewis. Still cheaper than the nct bednest if we have to do that. We decided against renting in the end as it costs about the same to buy for 2 children, cheaper for 3. I kept bidding in ebay but they all go for £200ish and in e you factor in new panels and matrtress they cost more than buying new sometimes.

Stayed up late doing school work. This is NOT a habit I wanted to get back in to this year. Must try harder to be a slacker as I don't even have my own class... only just finished and now not in the mood for sleep even though I am knackered. Very swollen ankles which i havent had for ages and sore coccyx too. Tis working malarkey doesn't suit very pregnant women.

Flyer747 · 04/09/2013 23:39

Oh I just wanted to add I hope I didn't come across as all preachy about second hand stuff. I just was trying to explain my thoughts on it, everyone has their own preferences etc etc. glad I've cleared that up Smile
Night All

roxvox · 04/09/2013 23:43

flyer ditto on my comments. Each to their own I say Smile

Ana I also agree, take it, disinfect it and use it, you don't know how long you are going to breastfeed for and indeed it is always handy to have them in more than one places.

To add to the hospital bag, it might sound odd, but a watering spray, a bit like the one you would use for houseplants. It is great after birth and going to the loo if you tore or not, fill it up with warm water and spray where needed, then pat dry, it really helps take the sting out, probably too much info but it works.

Sanjifair · 05/09/2013 05:56

I have never bought anything second hand for myDS,but accept whatever handmedowns come my way from people I know. I have joined a local Facebook selling page and recently a friend put a breast pump for sale on there (the medela one) at a bargain price. However, although I wouldn't mind getting one as my previous one broke, I was too weirded out by the idea of using something my friend had used on her breasts, so I can understand the reluctance to use the second hand lanisoh. It's irrational, but that's just how I felt. Also agree its rude of Ana's colleague to make out she is a charity case.

PseudoBadger · 05/09/2013 06:13

Morning everyone. Well I couldn't be bothered to get up and get a snack overnight. DS woke once so I had a little sleep on his floor, and my carpal tunnel is bad this morning, my right hand is aching :(
Consultant appointment at 2.40pm. Have a good day!

Natalieand · 05/09/2013 07:40

U no, I really really hope it is my baby shower on Saturday I'm getting excited about it and ill be disappointed if it doesn't go ahead or has been changed to another date now lol.

Although I'm not keen on second hands clothes bottles etc i would use second hand furniture (except mattresses) I've had a second hand bed frame before, my current bed frame is second hand as ours broke, I've brought a second hand toddler sized wardrobe for bump. The other day I almost brought dd a second hand quilt cover but managed to stop myself, it meant I had to pay an extra £8 to get it new but- I'm not sure how I feel about second hand kids bedding as they quite often have accidents etc.

3 wee's last night so pretty average night sleeps here.

Just wondered also to those had already have young children will u be re using your cot mattresses? I still have dd's mattress wrapped in black bags with her cot and can't decide if I necessarily need to buy a new mattress or just airing it and giving it a once over will be sufficient? X
P.s I deffo have no intention of replacing the cot x

PseudoBadger · 05/09/2013 07:42

I'm reusing my cot mattress, it was in black bags in the loft but I brought it down about a year ago. Just need to unwrap it. I'm also reusing the Moses basket pad/mattress which is being aired at this moment.

Natalieand · 05/09/2013 07:42

Hope your appt goes well pseudo do u have a scan too? Xx

PseudoBadger · 05/09/2013 07:42

I was meant to have a scan but it was cancelled as I had one last week.

ananikifo · 05/09/2013 07:55

Just to clarify I'm using a lot of second hand stuff and don't see the difference tbh. Most of it looks new. It's just this nipple cream that DH and people in the office think is so weird. It's also the bad feelings that come with what was said about me.

On a completely different note, my bump is a different shape today. Baby has always laid in my right side, with right side sticking out more, but I've awoken to a symmetrical bump. I don't feel like he's dropped. I'm thinking he must have gone transverse.

Pinkforboys · 05/09/2013 08:28

Sparkeleigh · 05/09/2013 08:30

ana She sounds like an arse! Her comments say more about her than you and the people she's said it to will realise that, especially since I doubt you're the only one she's told about all her possessions! Smile To me, passing on baby clothes and stuff is so normal it's slightly weird to make a big deal of it...

The nipple cream would ick me out though, I'd chuck it and get my own!

HotSoupDumpling · 05/09/2013 08:43

Ana, how patronising of her! In the office I used to work in everyone earned a very decent amount of money but nonetheless second hand baby stuff and maternity clothes were handed around freely without any sense if charity - it's just sensible to reuse stuff that was only used for a short time, instead of wasting it! Re the cream, if it makes you feel dodgy, don't use it, it will cause you more stress than it's worth. I'd probably do what the others say, I.e. squeeze some out, wipe it down, use it as a nice light tube to put in the changing bag so you only use it for emergencies.

Hello chell!

Sister, hope everything feels better after a night's sleep (hah! I barely slept myself...), and that you fully enjoyed your consolation beer!

I'd have loved a snuz pod, so much better looking than the bednest. However, when I was looking to buy the delivery estimates were too late for my EDD, plus it didn't seem to fold as flat as the bednest.

So I have a bednest upstairs in the bedroom plus the cheap John Lewis Moses basket for downstairs. Hopefully we can reuse both for any second baby so it will be a little less of a mahoosive waste of money!

Thanks for the gap code pink!
