Right-o, I'm a muslin convert, thank you.

Jolls, my dad groped my mum's twin sister when she was dying of cancer. He was actually a very ill man from the age of nineteen and suffered the most acute depression and anxiety I've ever come across. In his day they had no counsellors or Prozac, of course, and I wonder how he is still here today after suffering at the hands of the barbarians who ran the Victorian-esque nuthouses he used to stay in. I remember being about four years-old and having to try to communicate with him after he had received electric shock treatment to the head. He was like a dribbling vegetable and this went on for years. He really only got better when modern-day antidepressants became available and mum left him and he got counselling.

Do you think your adoptive dad was mentally ill?

Sorry to everyone else for depressing posts.

rescoonetwothree · 03/09/2013 15:16

i read too quick and saw lyra tying up babies and pram converting to islam and thought bloody hell it's all happening on thread 6 today.

Lol grey Grin

My last post just disappeared. Basically said its amazing that treatment for depression was so horrific just a few decades ago.

Jolleigh · 03/09/2013 15:25

That we know, there's nothing wrong with him Pram...just an evil bastard, a very talented lier and a master manipulator. Knowing everything I now know about him, I wouldn't even trust him in a room alone with my dog. A lot came to light after I moved out (mum announced the day after that she was divorcing him)...it seems each individual in the family had a lot to tell but felt incapable of telling it.

FrankelInFoal · 03/09/2013 15:31

gawj I second/third/fourth everyone else's comments. Don't put yourself in any danger, your dad sounds like he doesn't deserve to know about his grandchild.

On the pram front, we are leaning towards the Uppababy Vista which is middle of the market price-wise but by far the nicest to handle in terms of what we've pushed around the shops. It's very lightweight and manoeuvrable and scores highly in reviews.

FoxMulder · 03/09/2013 15:33

I was at my sister's some years ago when she asked me to run upstairs and grab a muslin cloth. Now my sister is a Muslim, so I thought she wanted me to get some kind of religious article...

They are now just known as pukey clothes.

rescoonetwothree · 03/09/2013 15:38

on the subject of religious articles - my catholic nan who on the whole is completely sane once gave me a hijab (she travelled a lot) for no reason at all.

OP posts:
rescoonetwothree · 03/09/2013 15:41

as in 'here thought you might want this' - keep in mind, i am not religious and have never expressed any sort of interest in practicing a religion. it was just so so weird.

NoMaybeAboutIt · 03/09/2013 15:48

Oh Grey that's hilarious.

My nan is so staunchly catholic that she wouldn't even know what a hijab is Grin

Jolleigh · 03/09/2013 15:52

The real test of sanity is whether or not you then made a point of wearing it at least once in her presence Grey Wink

MTBMummy · 03/09/2013 15:54

I just want to make one comment with regards to muslins, yes they are great and I wouldn't have survived the first 6 months without them, but please, please, please dont call them mussies I may have to climb through the computer screen and slap the first person who does this, so many of my friends kids (age 3+) still use "Mussies" as comfort items, FFS they clean up puke and every other thing going and now you want to cuddle it???

walks off muttering and shaking head
(Proviso - it's been a shit day and I feel grumpy)

TotalShock · 03/09/2013 16:00

Hospital just called to say my nt results are high. 1:95

Feel very low and don't feel I have any hope left, i used it all up getting to the scan

Sorry for being pathetic. I know I just need to sort myself out

IceNoSlice · 03/09/2013 16:05

Mtb Grin hehe, we are grumpy today, aren't we?

Pram to answer your earlier question about what folks used in the olden days instead of 'mussies' (sorry MTB, never heard that before but felt a sudden urge to use it)... I guess they used rags. In place if muslins, wipes, possibly nappies too, I guess. Essentially cloth pieces, for wiping up messes. I suppose muslins in their current form came about because most folk don't have the same reuse/thrifty attitude. Just a ponderance.

DS a lot better now he's actually swallowed some medicine and not just spat it all over me. Thanks to those who asked/ said nice things.

IceNoSlice · 03/09/2013 16:07

Aww Total, you are allowed to worry love. And we're here to listen. That is a higher risk score than lots of us have posted, but it is still a low odds. There was someone on here who's older DD had a 1/2 chance (didn't have DS) wasn't there? I'm sure you will find some comfort on here xx

LyraSilvertongue · 03/09/2013 16:19

Total, of course you're worried - any of us would be. It's not pathetic at all.

Look at it this way - if you had 95 babies, one of them might have Down's. Them's still pretty good odds.

MummyPig24 · 03/09/2013 16:25

I think Muslins have been around for generations! They were a lifesaver with puketastic dd.

I will add to the shitty dads, mine is a selfish alcoholic. I told him about the baby, he didn't have a go like I thought he would be he hasn't bothered to call since. I can't be arsed with him anymore.

Lunch today was pasta with Philly and peas. Dinner is roast chicken, potatoes, carrots and runner beans. We are hungry and the kids are being extraordinarily whingy. Bedtime is only 2.5 hours away.

MummyPig24 · 03/09/2013 16:26

Total fingers crossed for you.

MummyPig24 · 03/09/2013 16:29

Uh oh MTB dd is very attached to her mu-muz! She has a drawer full that she chews. I got new ones when she was about 1 and stopped puking though. Sorry!!

MTBMummy · 03/09/2013 16:32

Total so sorry to hear that - hopefully the combined results will be better x

MTBMummy · 03/09/2013 16:34

Ice I've been a miserable bitch all afternoon, thankfully I've not had to deal with anyone so can grumble to myself.

I blame a lack of sleep - actually no - I'm just horrid today - I'll come back nicer tomorrow I promise

LyraSilvertongue · 03/09/2013 16:38

DS1 just tried on his full secondary school uniform. My baby looks so grown up. First day tomorrow. Still haven't put name labels in a single item. Ugh.

commsgirl · 03/09/2013 16:43

Total Of course you're worried lovely and don't apologise, that's what we're here for. The odds are still very much on your side x

LyraSilvertongue · 03/09/2013 16:59

If we carry on like this it'll only be a couple of days till thread number 7 Shock

SoSurprised · 03/09/2013 17:12
