Orange did you see any Guinea Pig on menus whilst in Peru, I believe it's part of their staple diet....I'd be Shock as I had a guinea pigs growing up as a child.

I've never tried Peruvian food either but would love too.

Flyer747 · 20/08/2013 16:58

Hayle wrt the landlord I guess you could ask to meet with him at the property to run through what you'd like doing. One of the flats dp rents out is a bit shabby in my eyes (he's a man and thinks it's fine) however he likes to be regarded as a good landlord, so we advised the tenants that we would replace carpets, shower and kitchen flooring. He would never tell someone he'd do it and not get it done, but I guess some landlords aren't always honest.....You would want some guarantee though beforehand I totally agree.

Flyer we went to visit a community in the mountains who kept guinea pigs for eating. They scuttled about the floor which was a bit disconcerting while trying to eat my lunch but mainly they liked to hide under the oven as that was the warmest place in the hut! Wanted to tell them that is where they would eventually end up! They were not eaten regularly though. Our guide said he only ate them on Christmas Day. They weren't on any menus in posh places probably because it doesn't taste very nice I imagine. DH was a bit disappointed as he likes to try regional specialties (he did have alpaca which was good apparently). And most of the food on the inca trail where it was more basic was vegetarian anyway. Lots of beans, corn, potatoes, quinoa, bread etc.

claphammama · 20/08/2013 17:08

orange this restaurant is literally 2min walk from my office - will definitely try it!

by the way, weird coincidence but I actually watched a programme on BBC about Peru and local communities trying to survive only a couple of weeks ago. They were eating guinea pigs and the presenter ate them too and was saying they were absolutely delicious! They also treated them as pets and cuddled them. Then cooked them. Sorry flyer :-)

Flyer747 · 20/08/2013 17:33

Omg how could you treat an animal as a pet then kill and eat it Shock
Dp swears he ate dog in china when I took him on a trip, (not so sure myself) I always eat Veggie in china, India, Africa etc...I love paneer curries and veg ones more than meat ones now though. Yummy.

Would love to do the inca trail orange I bet it was amazing.

claphammama · 20/08/2013 17:38

flyer a few of my colleagues ate dog when we went to South Korea on business... dog restaurants are illegal now but there are lots of clandestine ones and local team told them where to go. I couldn't bring myself to join them, despite the curiosity, as I grew up with dogs and love dogs. Can't imagine eating a dog...

Flyer747 · 20/08/2013 17:51

I wonder what kind of dogs they eat, big meaty ones or little lap dog types, always wondered this Grin

Just watching come dine with me....these people are supposed to be 'Foodies' and half of them can't cook Grin

moonblues · 20/08/2013 18:32

I'm exhausted today! Luckily it's one of my days off work, but even the school/nursery run has been tiring me out. Bit worried about how it will be with a new baby as well...

Sorry work is being so rubbish Clapham. It just seems rude excluding you from meetings. How much longer do you have left?

I loved growing up in a large family, but DH would have been happy to stop at 2, so I was amazed he changed his mind about having a third. Though he keeps telling me this is definitely the last one! I would like 4, though I can see that financhially it wouldn't be the best idea. Though if you just did stuff because it was a good idea money wise, no one would ever have children! I'm a bit worried that DC3 might feel a bit left out as DS and DD are only 2 years apart and are very close.

Lots of great books mentioned on the thread. I love the Shirley Hughes ones, especially Dogger. My 2 loved the Alfie ones as well because they had the same age gap as Alfie and Annie-Rose. :) Looking forward to reading Peepo again.

Pinkforboys · 20/08/2013 18:42

I feel a little strange interrupting this conversation about eating dogs... but I've just come back from 31+4 scan and she's still a girl and steadily growing around the 50pc, which I guess is ok.

Sonographer was perplexed as to why I was having a scan when pg was all normal. Much as I like the Whittington there are def signs that they are cutting back costs. He was lovely tho and gave me 4 pics at no charge, not that you can see much at this stage- it's just a blur of white! And she's happily lying breach hence firm sticky out bits either side. Sorry- I always get gushy after a scan....

Now to cook supper, tho def not dog....

Natalieand · 20/08/2013 19:25

pink are u petite yourself? As obviously your build can have an effect on baby's, when they measured my baby's head off the scale the first thing I was asked is does my husband/any family member have a particularly large head as genetics plays a big part in it. Hopefully she will turn for u, still plenty of time xxx and lucky u getting pics I've had 2 scans since 20 weeks and asked for pics only to be told 'no only at 12 and 20weeks' MEANIES!

Weird food wise......I'm not a big meat water at all and generally very fussy about all good so I definately wouldn't be caught trying dog or guinea pig or any other household pet lol

moon I too am exhausted today, I sat down at earlier thinking right ill sort dinner in a min and must have dozed off sitting up dh then text me at 6 and my phone was on my belly which woke me luckily dd was still sitting on her bean bag watching tele with the house still intact phew

I'm not a huge reader but don't mind the odd book if it comes recommend dd prefers her dad to read to her (she's very daddyfied ATM anyway) and harasses him with books all the time bless her xx I think reading to them is a lovely way too bond with them specially since dd was about 2 when she really understood books... I got her to like porridge from reading her goldilocks solidly for weeks on end lol

Hope everyone else is having a lovely day xxx

OrangeBlossom2 · 20/08/2013 20:08

Hope you enjoy it Clapham. Flyer it was great, the amazon even better. Not the sort of holiday we will be having again for a long long time though!

Pinkforboys glad all is well and that your girly shopping is still ok! My midwife said breech babies can turn anywhere up to 36 weeks. someone recommended a website called spinning babies recently which has some ideas about how to encourage them to turn. I am looking forward to seeing our baby again next week even though nervous about placenta moving up.

claphammama · 20/08/2013 20:31

nice pink and hope she will decide to turn!

when is your scan orange? mine is on Tuesday morning. can't wait - excited and super nervous at the same time...

moon still 3.5 weeks to go... feels like nothing some days and like ages on other days. I struggle to figure out how much of it is simply thoughtless and how much is deliberate. Had a lovely chat with DP about it - he used to work for the same company for years so understands a lot. One day at a time!

OrangeBlossom2 · 20/08/2013 20:32

Mine is Tuesday too, 4.30. Fingers crossed we both have good news!

claphammama · 20/08/2013 20:33

PS. about eating dogs - I so love the serendipity of our conversations Grin

HotSoupDumpling · 20/08/2013 20:44

I love ceviche! The restaurant and the dish. I made DP take me there before we started ttc so I could get my fill of raw fish.

Re guinea pigs, they're not seen as pets, more like...as you would treat chickens that you keep in the back garden to eat. A renewable fresh source of meat that you can pluck off the floor!

I love buying books for baby! They're more for me as the baby will not be allowed to chew on them.

Flyer747 · 20/08/2013 21:10

Programme on bbc2 about midwives

roofio87 · 20/08/2013 21:10

phew me and dp just took apart our old bed, put it back together in spare room and assembled our new bed, all without falling out!! I helped quite a lot so feeling very pleased with myself haha!! just sitting down to catch up in Great british bake off. I love it!!

HotSoupDumpling · 20/08/2013 21:22

Watching the midwife one! Fascinating.

OrangeBlossom2 · 20/08/2013 21:24

Ooh thanks flyer, have set it up to record.

Hotsoupdumpling you can get cloth books for baby to chew, I bought some black and white faces rag books on amazon today after all the book talk.

monkeytree · 20/08/2013 21:31

umlauf - Don't feel it's wrong to have just one child. For a long time I wanted just one child and there are a lot of pros as well as cons. DD is now 7 and I'm not sure we would have the close bond that we have if I had to care for another dc due to my own ability to cope with a toddler etc. I was one of 3 and my childhood was fraught to say the least due to the parenting that I received. There was only 16 months between myself and one brother and we would fight like cat and dog, still don't have a good relationship now. I have a better relationship with my brother who is 5 years younger but I think no. of dc's and age gap is a very personal thing and dependent on so many factors. I was told I was cruel to have just one child by a woman who didn't know me very well but I laughed at her because I knew my dd was doing just fine. It can work either way with siblings so many just don't get on and it is my greatest wish that my two dds (despite their 7 year age gap) will get on but who knows?

I got married at Gretna Green. Just DH and myself and 2 passers by were our witnesses. I was 5 months pregnant at the time and I too have a complicated family situation so just wanted a small affair. I had a wedding dress, hair done professionally and lovely wedding boquet and I have never regreted it. My second choice would be to get married on a lovely beach somewhere (but still a small affair).

Sophie is such a pretty name. I have a niece called Sophie so ruled it out. Also like the name Thomas and was on my boys list of names. We like Arabella for our dd which seems to get a cool response whenever mentioned but we like it and at the end of the day that's all that matters.

MotherOfNations · 20/08/2013 21:48

Sorry to heat about your bad day yesterday Flyer. Dp's bicycle was stolen from the back garden lady night by kids so I feel your pain.

Ds's 13th birthday today. It really doesn't seem so long ago that he was a newborn.
He wants to go to see a 15 certificate film at the cinema with his friends at the weekend. Do you think they'll be allowed in if I'm with them?

MotherOfNations · 20/08/2013 21:49

hear not heat and last night not lady night.

Pinkforboys · 20/08/2013 21:51

nat I'm not exactly petite- 5'7" and DH 6'. But MiL is quite little, maybe she's taking after that side of the family, tho I really hope not. I'm just like my Mum and really hope DD will be just like us too! Is that awful of me?!

umlauf I've spent the last 5 years looking for the good side of one DC and found lots! The friends I've made at school with one DS generally have amazing relationships between parents and child and have been able to give their DC more attention and a more mature relationship than many I've seen with more DCs. There's pros and cons all round.

Oh- and on books, Ds just made me read him Littlest Dino & the Naughty Rock and it made me think of those of you with difficult toddlers who might like a book reminding them how to behave & be loved. Interesting that DS chose it....

Packing for a long weekend at my parents- pseudo was it you doing the same? I'm going to dig out DS's old baby clothes and see what DD can wear and what I can finally give away. And hopefully find a good b'day present for DS in Peterborough.

Wish you all a pain free, deep, undisturbed sleep xx

Pinkforboys · 20/08/2013 21:57

MoN your cinema trip reminded me of my brothers- went to the cinema to see a 15 when still underage. The younger of the two when asked piped up with 'I'm 12' and spoilt it for the rest! 30years on and he's still reminded of it....

Oh - and last appeal of the evening to you all. 7th anniversary looming- Wool or Copper. He doesn't cook. More a DIYer. I'm still knitting for me and bump so don't think I'll have a chance to knit anything for him even over the next year. I'm looking at cashmere jumpers, but can anyone think of anything more inspiring?? Confused

Flyer747 · 20/08/2013 22:12

I reckon you'll be fine mon. I used to watch 15 films with friends when I was 12/13.

I also used to nick my sisters driving licence (days before picture licence) and my friends and I would buy diamond white and that thunderbird drink and I was only 14/15 my poor parents, I hope my son or daughter doesn't put me through the same stresses I did with my folks Shock
