Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

brie is on the no list as it's mould ripened whether it's pasturised our not. you can, however eat it if it's cooked through and piping hot. same for camembert. But no to both of them cold. Id asked doctor early on as a cheeseaholic!

LyraSilvertongue · 11/08/2013 12:36

Dr Google tells me pasteurised Brie is fine. If I eat it I'll cut off the rind.

littleABI · 11/08/2013 12:36

Hi ladies! Just caught up on the threads. Can't say the noodle craze got to me, but I think A LOT about spicy beef and sweet and sour sauce... But I'm really into proper old style meals, a good hearty roast beef and yorshires or a lasagna, or baked potato with chilling or beans. As for the brie, I did hear it was ok if pasturised. That brie and onion baguette sounds delish, maybe even a toastie or a panini! also I was pleased to learn that mayo has pasturised egg so I can eat homemade salmon pate and also potato salad YUM.

Woo!
Thing is... I feel too sick to eat any of it. It's such a dilemma. Can't believe how much I just talked about food.

And bump name came via my mum, after we gave parents a little card with the 8 week early scan pic, and card had a cute cartoon giraffe... Bump is officially baby giraffe!

Love to all and hope things are going well. It's been a rocky ride already for some and we are still thinking of you xxx

babybear9 · 11/08/2013 12:38

www.nhs.uk/chq/Pages/2683.aspx?CategoryID=54&SubCategoryID=216 maybe if rind off youll be ok

PiratesMam · 11/08/2013 12:39

I'm putting Brie baguette on my hospital bag list and when I go into labour, DH's first task is to make it so it's lovely and fresh. Then I'm gonna pop baby out, hand it to DH and eat Brie until I puke!! Last time it was pâté but this time it's all about the Brie.

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 11/08/2013 12:42

Being pasteurised is not the issue with Brie. The issue is the mould in which it is encased and the water content. The ph in soft cheese is less acidic which is ideal for listerial growth and the extra water content of sift cheese is an ideal environment for it to live.

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 11/08/2013 12:48

www.nhs.uk/chq/Pages/why-cant-I-eat-soft-cheeses-during-pregnancy.aspx?CategoryID=54&SubCategoryID=216 not even with the rind off.

PramQueen1971 · 11/08/2013 12:48

Yes, Sarah, call the doc or you'll be in danger of dehydration.

Can someone please clarify the brie situation as I hate the stinky shit and I'm sick of reading about it. Fanks.

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 11/08/2013 12:50

sarah go now. Walk

LyraSilvertongue · 11/08/2013 12:51

Yes, contact them now. You're very much at risk of dehydration which won't do you or the baby any good.

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 11/08/2013 12:52

...Walk in centre or A&E.

HotCrossPun · 11/08/2013 12:57

Sarah You should go. No water and diarrhoea isn't a good combination.

Yes, can somebody clarify the Brie situation. Until 5 minutes ago I didn't think I could have it at all, I didn't know you could eat it as long as it was hot.

If that's the case that's dinner sorted!

LyraSilvertongue · 11/08/2013 12:59

I'm going to go with pasteurised is safe enough. If its ok for French women then it's ok for me.

SoSurprised · 11/08/2013 14:08

Sarah you should go. It's can be quite dangerous for you if you can't even keep down fluids.

Coolhand · 11/08/2013 14:22

Sarah agree with the others. Please look after yourself.

The food guidelines are so confusing. I've also been merrily eating potato salad with barbecues all summer as forgot about mayo. Oh well. In favour of March prosecco month!

littleABI · 11/08/2013 14:42

To clarify about homemade pate... It's shop bought mayo. Hellmans.with wild Alaskan salmon.

Rockchick1984 · 11/08/2013 15:08

Cool as long as its shop-bought mayo its fine, home made is on the banned list :)

FrankelInFoal · 11/08/2013 15:18

Agree, my fertility nurse said things like Hellman's are absolutely fine because they are made with pasteurised egg. It is the fresh stuff you get in posh restaurants/hotels or make yourself at home that are the problem because they use raw eggs.

IceNoSlice · 11/08/2013 15:32

Whilst I understand that folks want a definite 'yes you can eat/no you can't' list, I have to say I'm taking a more relaxed approach to the whole thing second time round. I believe that it is up to you to find out information, risks, statistics etc and make your own mind up.

In general, I think if there is a chance something will make me ill (preggers or not preggers) I will give it a miss while pregnant. Eg seafood from somewhere I don't trust 100%, chicken on a BBQ, cheese so ripe it is about to crawl off. I am also avoiding pâté, liver and raw eggs. But I am having the odd small glass of wine, runny eggs, pasturised brie, pink meat (sadly a bit more cooked than my usual Rare preference) and the odd caffeine drink.

I think folks who say 'you can't eat X' should perhaps rephrase to 'the current NHS advice is to avoid X'. Because I personally don't find diktats like that helpful. By all means arm yourself with as much info as possible but don't judge others for what they have decided is a risk they are not overly concerned about.

Same way as I wouldn't judge folks for having had a few cigarettes. Not what I'd do, but I understand how hard it is to stop smoking and it's not really my business, is it?

Sarahb8990 · 11/08/2013 15:41

Just an update- iv been to my local hospital and they are admitting me to a better hospital 15 miles away to be put on a drip over night. Thanks for all the advice and concern. Will pop back tomorrow.

IceNoSlice · 11/08/2013 15:45

Hope you feel better soon Sarah

PramQueen1971 · 11/08/2013 15:48

Flipping' heck, Sarah, I hope you're going to be okay.

rescoonetwothree · 11/08/2013 16:20

glad they're being helpful sarah!

i'm still eating whatever apart from peanuts, i know the rules have changed but dp has asthma and eczema so don't want to risk that as much as possible. i don't like 99% on the 'avoid' list anyway!

haven't got out of bed all day, been sitting doing work in my pants but have to go meet boyfriend there in a couple of hours to deal with loud music and lots of drunk punks, wahhhh

Edamame · 11/08/2013 16:46

Another oldie here - #1 at 41, though I guess I'll be nearly 42 when it comes. My mum is gonna totally freak be so thrilled.

March 2014 feels like such a long way off though, 8+1 today and strangely feeling no symptoms whatsoever for the last couple of days apart from being a moody cow boobs deflated etc. As much as I'd love to get a scan to find out if everything is still ok, I suspect there's going to be an awful lot of worrying so might as well learn to deal with it.

Anyhow, hello ladies!
