Hi all! Providing the ladies who are currently in hospital don't give birth before the last 20 posts in our old thread, we've made it to a new one with babies all still staying put for now!

Here's the stats thread www.mumsnet.com/Talk/antenatal_clubs/a1694946-September-2013-STATS-THREAD

Welcome newbies! If anyone wants to join the FB group (better for sharing documents and pictures), please message myself or jennimoo with your real life name and email address and we can add you to the group!

How did I miss Ikea pick and mix?!? I was in there Wednesday, and I've checked the website and they have it! Bugger that, I'm going back tomorrow!

Jammy, I had to have a chat with the consultant midwife, and we discused cord clamping, and managed vs natural 3rd stage. Delaying the cord clamping doesn't affect your choices after, in fact the team at my local seem very pro-delayed-clamping. As for the injection, I was told that is not a treatment, but a management. There are 2 types of injections, one that only prompts rhythmic contractions, and one that helps the cervix close up too. I've opted for the first as there's a slightly decreased chance of leaving placenta behind. If I choose the natural route and I did start bleeding heavily, I was told it would be too late for the injections and I'd be rushed off for treatment instead. If it's just taking a while, I could ask for the jab at any time. As I'm classed as high risk, it'll be injections for me. Had I been low risk I'd have opted for natural.

CharlW1 · 23/08/2013 06:28

Will definitely be getting the pIck n mix when I next go to Ikea! Glad it's not just me send OH that have an argument or cross words everytime we go there!

I am really enjoying the second week of my maternity leave - I have finally started to relax after sorting through baby things and doing life admin for the past week and a half.

Flo completely understand the almost lost feeling finishing work but it's amazing how quickly you adapt to not being at work (I have been guilty of being a bit of a workaholic too) - I've loved going for long walks, organising the flat for the new arrival, meeting up with friends and doing lots of crafts - everyone said I would be bored but I have been far from it.

TripleRock · 23/08/2013 08:34

My birth plan states delayed cord clamping and managed 3rd stage I.e. injection. This was following discussion with the SoM.

They are very pro delayed cord clamping here.

I decided to opt for the injection for various reasons. Some related to previous section, others relating to family members experiences. I wasn't given a choice of different types of injection though. Just yes or no.

flipflump · 23/08/2013 08:59

Ikea pick and mix, how did I miss this?!

Last night I had really sharp shooting pains from my pubic bone to my belly button. It's making me wonder what's going on in there. I'm also thinking I should get on with my to do list before this little person arrives.

Very excited to see the recent activity on Facebook. I'm having problems and seem to be unable to comment, very frustrating but massive congratulations from me. It's all so exciting, I'm feeling very emotional!!

Right, time to use up all the eggs we seem to have and make meringues for visitors. Can I freeze them? Very un-baby, labour related question, sorry!!!

Readytosettle · 23/08/2013 10:27

I don't think u can freeze meringues, but I don't think you need to. When u but them from the supermarket you get at least 3 months on the best before....and they're not in any special packaging.

Kittenkatzen · 23/08/2013 10:47

YY to an IKEA trip being tantamount to divorce, what is it about that place?! We hardly ever end up actually buying what we went in for either and just come back with armfuls of crap from the marketplace section!

I've been having the periody cramps on and off for the last week or so too, was wondering what it might mean....might mention it to the midwife next time and see what she says. Have been getting the fanjo shooting pains too, mostly when walking so had assumed they were self inflicted from overdoing it. Talking of which I walked into town and back with my mum yesterday, only a couple of miles or so total but omg I was wiped out like you wouldn't believe last night!

Interesting chat about people being offered sweeps quite early, hasn't been mentioned to me just yet, but think i will be declining until 40wks at least - as someone else said, i'm desperate to hang on till September too...hence not having started on the raspberry leaf tea yet either!

Was surveyed by a nice lady from my Local Health Authority yesterday - apparently they are going for some kind of "baby friendly" award and wanted to ask me lots of questions about the information I've been given regarding feeding options, breastfeeding support availability etc. Felt a bit bad as actually I really haven't been given anything at all by anyone, but have done so much reading myself (and of course have you guys to ask!) that I really don't feel hard done by at all, and I did make the point that everyone has seemed very helpful and approachable and I wouldn't have been worried to ask questions had I wanted to. Oh well!

I have a "proper" maternity leave day planned today - am not going into DHs office to help out like I have been, instead I will be baking Mary Berry's cupcake style gingerbreads, making sausage rolls, sorting out the nursery/bombsite a bit more, and meeting DH for lunch at a lovely italian place in town :)

JammyTummy · 23/08/2013 10:54

Ah ok thanks all. Planning on asking for delayed cord clamping and managed placenta, all going well.

Starting to get pretty miffed with MIL thinking I'm a total quack for my natural birth chat... I booked a reflexology appointment for day before due date and was telling her about it, but it very quickly became clear that she thought I was absolutely nuts. I am probably as far as you can possibly get from being a hippie, but i do want to give myself the option to have a natural birth in a pool, and (whether it works or not) a helping hand in kick starting labour through reflexology as opposed to someone poking a hand up my lady parts/ a full blown induction! What's so bloody crazy about that?!?

Hmmmmmppph

Sorry rant over.

flipflump · 23/08/2013 11:17

Thanks Ready, I'll pop them in an airtight container. Although I do worry they'll be a temptation. We've got no crap in the house due to GD, they'll have to be out of sight, out of mind!!

Enjoy your day kitten, I'm having a similar one - I love it!!

TripleRock · 23/08/2013 12:45

Got the last of the bedding drying on the line. Quite relieved that we went for yellow/white last time now. Although this little boy will have to suffer some pink gro bags and a pink bath chair... At least the bulk of stuff is neutral.

Fire and Carbon Monoxide alarms replaced and checked.

3yo old baby sick discovered on car seat insert and removed Blush

Nearly baby ready I think :)

Joskar · 23/08/2013 13:08

I think delayed cord clamping must be seen as the norm now because they are very pro it here too. I'll probably opt for the injection though because I'm a bit concerned about how low my iron levels are. Still cannae get them over 100. Getting very bored of people telling me how pale I am. Hello?! I'm Scottish! Default setting is blue!

Jammy Also not very hippyish and have had similar reactions from folk. Not least because in addition to thinking a water birth sounds nice we're also going for real nappies. Imagine! The horror!

flip meringues need to be kept airtight and I'd eat within a week or two. (Who am I kidding? I'd eat within the day probably.) If they do go a bit soft then you can always make Eton Mess.

Readytosettle · 23/08/2013 13:23

Just got ID'd in sainsburys....when ur not preggers it can just about pass as flattering, when u are it's just a bit of an insult! Since when did a couple of bottles of premium IPA become tipple of choice for teen preggo's anyway??

I'm 30 btw, & didn't have any make up on (another sure sign that I'm not a teenager!)

Derpess · 23/08/2013 14:09

Hi all- very pleased to report that me and the twins came home on Wednesday :) Just trying to adjust to having a family now and it's absolutely brilliant so far - even with the lack of sleep!

I'm not on Facebook so not sure what the latest baby news is- congrats to anyone who has had their baby...

Good luck to everyone else, hope you're aren't all getting too uncomfortable now.

RakeABedOfTyneFilth · 23/08/2013 14:55

Belvedere and weebarra have had their babies, Derpess! Enjoy being at home, sounds lovely.

I had another MW appt today. Weekly now. She wouldn't give me a sweep though, or even investigate, she will next Friday at 40+3 if I am still waiting. All fine though, then DH and I went for a walk round the shops and had huge bowls of ramen at the Japanese cafe in Watford Market (best food in Watford seriously)

Home now and fknackered, need my nap...

badguider · 23/08/2013 15:20

Did weebarra change her mn name? I can't find her EDD info on the stats thread to move... have added her birth anyway but if anybody knows her EDD or other info please update.

frogchops · 23/08/2013 17:16

Oh. My mw asked about the injection and what my preferences were, and I said I didn't have any....but my iron levels are very low too Joskar, so I'm glad u made me think about having it straight away. Wink

TripleRock · 23/08/2013 17:40

I'm having it because I just don't want to risk having problems delivering my placenta. My SIL was on her hands and knees for an hour trying to deliver it and she feels the whole business delayed her initiating BF.

MIL has hers removed surgically due to same issue.

I know that's no reason to suppose I should have any problems, but I don't want the worry of it. Especially when I'm already knackered from pushing a baby out.

I'm also at slightly increased risk of bleeding due to having a scarred uterus so that was the clincher in the end.

SGJ · 23/08/2013 18:59

I might bring up delayed cord clamping with the midwife I get in labour but last time DD had such an exceptionally short cord that she wouldn't have reached on to my chest for skin to skin unless they'd clamped it straight away. Would much rather have skin to skin and get started on BF than have the baby dangling between my legs waiting for the cord to stop pulsating. Just seeing what happens, really, that's my birth plan. I like the idea of delayed cord clamping if it's possible but if not, DD is a very healthy child so swift clamping doesn't seem to have done her any disservice.

jennimoo · 23/08/2013 18:59

I'm either not having the jab or having the slightly different one as last time I had a terrible headache and BP went right up which looks likely to be because of that. I'm hoping to stay in the pool with the cord attached and possibly start BF while it happens. The BFing is supposed to encourage contractions to get the placenta out.

I doubt things will go that smoothly though, and if they have to cut the cord will probably have the other injection the MW said was available.

And on being hippyish: my water birth and real nappies was seen as a little out there but when I ended up baby led weaning (ie not spoon feeding purees) and BFing until DD was past 2 I'm sure some people were a little... Surprised ;)

ION still getting woken in the night by gentle contractions and had quite a lot of that going on this afternoon. Also bits of plug almost every visit to the toilet still. I'm a little concerned that I'm just too tired for my body to decide the time is right, but I guess baby's got to come out sometime!

HettySunshine · 23/08/2013 20:06

I had a great visit to the mw today. It was my favourite one of the team and everything is just right. It was my 36 week appointment at 37 weeks and my bump was 35cm, littley's head is just starting to engage (brim) and my wee and blood pressure are both fine.

It also turns out that the lovely mw will be on the labour ward for the next 6 weeks so I can ask for her when I go in. Grin

Derpess · 23/08/2013 22:42

Thanks Rake...

Congratulations Weebarra and Belvedere- hope you are all doing well.

RunningBear78 · 24/08/2013 00:00

Really pleased to hear you are home derpess and that you are loving parenthood!

jenni maybe yr body is taking its time to warm up and practice properly? I hope you aren't too tired when the time comes. Is having contractions for a week normal? Sounds quite annoying/boring!?

Woken up early with reflux. Sleeping upright really isn't v easy is it? Haven't been this bad for ages, must have eaten too much too late Sad

JammyTummy · 24/08/2013 00:42

Running I'm right here with you! Went to sleep at 10, woke up at 11 with really hot feet, god awful heartburn and wide awake! Been on Facebook, had a bath, had a wonder about the house, now trying to stay upright for a while longer reading a book. I thought heartburn would stop by now!!!

CheeseStrawCraving · 24/08/2013 05:43

Hi ladies, can I ask a silly question? I've been up all night with what feels like period pain (erratic, but still waking me up and getting more painful as I type), but have had nothing vaguely resembling a show, or waters breaking, or in fact anything else that might suggest labour. Is this normal? I know Jenni mentioned having pains for the last few days so I'm not sure what to expect when it finally does happen.... I'm 37+6 today.

Readytosettle · 24/08/2013 06:09

Sorry i can't help u cheese...sounds promising for early labour tho- have u taken some paracetamol?

I'm also in heartburn hell....went out for a curry with DH last night & it's the worst I've had in ages. Woke up at one point in the night as I was sick in my mouth (really grim curry sick) so ended up having to sleep upright. Not pleasant!

weebarra · 24/08/2013 06:39

Weebarra here - I was whyriskit so don't think I ever changed it on the spreadsheet.
Hoping that me and DD get out of hospital today - she's a little jaundiced and my bp is still playing silly buggers so fingers crossed.
You can go into labour without show or waters going - its the contractions getting closer together and more intense that make it labour.
