Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
jennimoo · 14/07/2013 19:19

Kitten- hope you're feeling better, must have been a shock, but sounds like all will be well.

I think potties are easier for them to be independent. DD recently potty trained at 2.9 and was only just big enough to use the toilet on her own even with seat and step, and she's very tall for her age!

Had the first deleted person a little annoyed, asking what group it was so they could join. I haven't replied, the message Flo wrote for sending when deleting is very clear and diplomatic!

Fozziebearmum2be · 14/07/2013 19:26

That's good that you can go to the midwife led unit. What's the tour like...in my head I keep thinking that you can hear women screeching whilst giving birth which would seriously freak me out..We have ours in a couple of weeks.

Ion-dh painted my toenails today and did a surprisingly good job. It didn't end up all over my feet, but was a bit gloopy in places. (Ie it wasn't good enough to start me worrying that this wasn't his first time Wink)

DF's partner took one look at bump today and said I'd never last till Sept...I'm not due till 26th and we need to move house, so stressed me out slightly... Blush

TripleRock · 14/07/2013 19:36

Kitten, thinking of you and your family and glad to hear the prognosis is good.

Potties work well initially because sometimes it's a case of having seconds to get them there in the early days. Plus you can have it in the room and it's a reminder to them.

We have no downstairs loo in my house, so we still have a potty downstairs as DD prefers the independence of going to the potty herself (rather than calling me to take her upstairs). We have a trainer seat on the toilet upstairs which she also uses so I'm sure the potty will go within the next few months.

Also handy that she will still go on a potty as we keep one in the boot.

kipsonline · 14/07/2013 20:17

Sorry to hear about your dad kitten and hope you are feeling better soon mango. And thank you so much jenni and flo for Facebook sorting, that's a big relief!
My DS2 never used a potty, he went straight to standing up to wee in the loo like his big bro at 2.3, v easy for me!! I can see it is much more necessary for girls...
We have finally finished the nursery and washed all the baby bits from the loft, feeling calmer now... I have been overcome with a distinct need to nest, I'm hoping this isn't the sign of anything in the offing....

Joskar · 14/07/2013 20:55

Kitten all the best to your dad. Just horrible news. Take care.

I'm in a seriously bad mood today. I'm totally fed up not being able to move. The pain in my pelvis/back has been getting steadily worse all week. I'm shattered because lying down is so painful I don't sleep. I'm tired of not being able to enjoy a meal or sit on the sofa or walk the dog or weed the garden or even shave my goddamn legs! I am so fed up of effing people telling me to well sit down and put my feet up. I want to scream with rage at people who can walk or run or drive a car. I am so damn angry. I'm even angrier because I realise that none of this is reasonable or fixable and it's no one's fault and there is no point in being angry and there is really no point in crying.

Sorry. Poor me, eh?! Here endeth the self pity sermon. Hope everyone else is a bit jollier and not too hot.

SGJ · 14/07/2013 21:03

How many weeks are you, Joskar? If you're suffering horrendously (and it certainly sounds like you are) then you could ask to be either induced early or at the very least have some aggressive sweeps to try and get things going! Sounds like agony - not just the pain but being so limited in what you can do. Hope they'll help you out.
I've also embraced nesting today - so far it's just been extreme tidying so that when I'm on mat leave in 2 weeks and DD is at nursery for 2 days a week, I can spend those 2 weeks cleaning the crap out of everything! SO satisfying!

CheeseStrawCraving · 14/07/2013 21:57

Kitten, sending you lots of good wishes Flowers

ION I have just started a money thread re being a new sole trader and what benefits etc i am entitled to. Am a little scared that people are just going to call me stupid. Everyone on this Fred (this is the main one I go on apart from surveys and comps etc) is so friendly but I have seen how harsh some of the other freds are! Eek. Anyone been brave enough for name freds so far?

weebarra · 14/07/2013 22:11

Kitten - sorry to hear your news, fingers crossed your dad will respond well to treatment.
Joskar - you are having a seriously tough time of it, thinking of you.
Re names: have briefly ventured on the bn fred. Generally people were nice, I did get one "vile", but other posters defended me!
ION, I'm another one who has fallen in love with the scandi baby clothes, just got a lovely vest on ebay for £3. Pink with buses - v cool.

jennimoo · 15/07/2013 05:16

I have been on baby names and got away lightly I think. I was asking if it was ok to use the same name as a friend, as they unknowingly used ours earlier this year... Didn't really helping though!

MrsMangoBiscuit · 15/07/2013 05:52

jenni, is it very likely that your children will end up in school together? Or in the same friendship group? If not then go for it. I would tell your friend ahead of time though.

Joskar, you have every right to be angry. Getting SPD as severely as you have, is rare. As is having it for as long. I would be howling at the unfairness of it. Sad I hope you're having a better day today.

jennimoo · 15/07/2013 07:01

Friends live a 45min car ride away and see them every month or so. They use full name we'd register full and use short version. I had a chat to her a few weeks back and she's fine with it, so will probably go ahead.

Just skimmed the end of my last antenatal thread to see how I was feeling / what happened. Looks like I wasn't sleeping well at all. 3 days before DD was born I was told she wasn't engaged at all (I think she's been 2/5s before that) and had a bit of the plug come loose.

Was exciting to read as although I was one of the first it reminded me how exciting this thread is about to get as people start having babies! That cheered me up a bit as had rubbish night due to this terrible heat...

Kittenkatzen · 15/07/2013 07:27

Thanks again for the messages, you're all lovely x

Grin fozzie I was a teeny bit worried about that too, but it's a tiny unit (only 3 birthing rooms) and you phone ahead to check if they're busy or not - it was empty when we went which was nice as we got to have a proper nose around without feeling like voyeurs!

joskar huge sympathies to you, I can imagine how uncomfortable and frustrating it must be for you. Shame some of us can't come and keep you company a bit!

cheese I started a name fred a few weeks back and was pleasantly surprised actually...I think you just have to don your thickest skin and remember that it's just opinions and none of them really matter (although don't say that or you'll get flamed for having asked in the first place...!)

HettySunshine · 15/07/2013 08:28

So sorry to read your news Kitten. Fingers crossed for a speedy recovery for your dad.

Also really sorry to hear how much you are suffering Joskar. I can't imagine how crappy you must be feeling. I really hope you manage to find some kind of relief.

I'm starting to feel sick! I haven't had any sickness at all so far (31 weeks) but yesterday and this morning I feel awful. I'm trying to drag myself off the sofa to go to work but the idea of the 15 minute walk in the sun is not encouraging me!

Wish I was on mat leave. Only 5 weeks to go - sigh! Sad

Sorry to be so moany so early in the morning!

jennimoo · 15/07/2013 08:53

Hetty - I did feel sick early on but I'm getting indigestiony hungry sicky feelings now. I don't think the heat is helping...

badguider · 15/07/2013 09:14

Hetty - my stomach/digestion has had another wobble last week (32wks). I have no apetite, heartburn and my digestion is either too active or too sluggish but rarely in between.
I don't want to take anything for my digestion or change my diet as it's swinging from one extreme to the other so if I took anything for constipation it would make the days I need to go 3-4times worse and if I took anything for going too much it would make the constipated days worse.

geeandfeesmum · 15/07/2013 09:39

ReadytoSettle I haven't suffered too much with the heat this time around but when I was pregnant with DS it was really hot. I used to have "as cold as I can bear it" baths and stick my head under water for a lot of the time!! It's not something I would ever do any other time (I'm quite cold blooded) but I swear I could've lived in a plunge pool throughout the entire pregnancy!! This time however, i would kill for a hot tub. I am even tempted to use the one at the gym. I just don't want to get told off because you're not supposed to use them when you a pregnant, are you?

Kitten that is awful about your dad. As others have said, it does sound quite a positive prognosis. I hope the op goes well.

JammyTummy With DS it was easier to use a potty because we only have a upstairs toilet so by the time we got him upstairs during potty training, he had already done his business!! With DD, it is slightly different. She is 5 and autistic. She is currently being potty trained. We have tried her with the toilet a few times but it wasn't sinking in. One day, she fetched the potty from upstairs. We figured it was worth a shot. It has been way more successful this time around, using the potty rather than the toilet.

On the other hand, I have friends who never used the potty once during potty training of their children.

ION, I have my group physio session for SPD today. I was really hoping to see a physio personally rather than in a group but, oh well. I have been in so much pain and sometimes, I can barely put one foot in front of the other.

Wish me luck!!

RunningBear78 · 15/07/2013 10:14

Joskar, sending huge sympathies. I was feeling so uncomfortable last night I was almost in tears then I realised that actually nothing was really hurting so I probably should stop complaining. It did make me think of though and I really feel for you. As someone mentioned above, is it worth thinking about getting an early induction if things are so bad?

My current joy seems to be waking up with sick in my mouth from awful reflux. Takes ages for the burning to go. Ended propping myself up on about 5 pillows last night to prevent further episodes. Wondering if my body thinks im a penguin and need to regurgitate food for the coming baby Hmm

Mooster1709 · 15/07/2013 11:19

Sympathy Joskar - it must be so frustrating. I know I get in a massive mood whenever my SPD is even a little bit bad, so it must be horrific for you. Being permanently uncomfortable or in pain is just exhausting too.

running the penguin thought made me chuckle. Not nice for you though.

I am in less of a grump this morning. I finally have my study at home sorted out and feel like I can get things done. DH is away for the week, so by Thursday I'll be fed up, but right now I'm doing ok. Have to go to my first NCT tomorrow night on my own though, which I'm not relishing the thought of.

A question for you all: I got a moses basket and mattress from John Lewis, but there's a 3cm gap between the mattress and base when it's pushed to one end. Do you think this is a SIDS risk? Or will it be ok once there's a sheet etc on? On a related note, I read somewhere that waterproof mattress protectors are a good thing (for cleaning, but also something about fumes from mattresses, but this bit might have all be bollocks) - but was worried because they wouldn't be breathable if baby rolled onto front. Any thoughts?? I know I'm being paranoid...

Readytosettle · 15/07/2013 12:36

Mooster I have a waterproof mattress protector for tge cot bed- it's not a plasticky one, it's from John Lewis & a quilted cotton fabric on the top side. My bro also suggested these sheets you can get from amazon that are jersey on top & waterproof underneath...can't remember the brand tho. I don't know about breathability but I'm sure they wouldn't allow them if it was an issue.

jennimoo · 15/07/2013 12:45

I think the new SIDS guidelines say mattresses completely covered on waterproof cover are safe to keep and use for the next child, so I don't think waterproof covers are a problem.

I'm not sure about the gap with a basket but as mattress is so shallow anyway I expect its fine as baby can't get stuck down there.

A tip for Moses baskets someone have me last time: don't invest in too many sheets as pillow cases work great. I did pillowcase with muslin on top folded under so I could just pull that off when DD inevitably sicked all over it!

PurplePoppySeed · 15/07/2013 14:01

kitten thinking of you and family - happy to hear it's a good prognosis and think of the joy you will be bringing the family with your gift soon :)

Joskar Thinking of you too, I'm still suffering a bit, but with the weekly osteopath and physio appointments + changes at work I'm back on top of mine. My first NHS physio appointment is tomorrow, so I'm sure if I hadn't forked out £80 a week on my private appointments I'd be in a bad way too by now - thank you for all of your advice a few weeks back, really sad that without the means, the NHS wouldn't really had stepped up for me yet! Think I'm quite lucky I'm tall and therefore still have a fairly small bump and no major centre of gravity change!

Ready I got some good advice about keeping cool over the weekend (haven't tried it yet though), someone I know said she used to freeze T-Shirts and then put them on - she said put them in a sealed bag in the freezer and then once cold wear them!! No idea if it works, but worth a try?

It's so sad that I'm actually happy to commute in to London just to be in the office and cool down!

redandyellowandpinkandgreen · 15/07/2013 14:37

fozziebear on our tour when I was pregnant with DS there was a lady in the late stages of labour making a fair noise, and lots of nervous giggles from the pregnant ladies.

badguider · 15/07/2013 14:43

Just back from MW appt at 32+4
Good news: boy is head down, my iron, blood sugar and blood pressure levels are all good.

Weird news: Still not had the WC vaccine... MW would have given it if I really said I want it but she's not pushy and in fact didn't even seem keen. I have recently had diptheria and tetanus (about 8mo ago) so can expect pretty horrible side-effects from having them again so soon... also, a friend who is pregnant in the same city said her MW was also less than keen as there hadn't been as many cases in Scotland and no deaths when the epidemic was in England. The vaccination programme was initially just 6mo from Oct last year and they're dubious about continuing it here... not sure now... I'm generally a vaccine fan but not convinced about this one given the very luke warm vibes from local MWs.

Anybody else have a MW who didn't seem very enthusiastic?

OP posts:
jennimoo · 15/07/2013 14:50

My MW didn't mention it! I texted afterwards and she said to call doctors surgery.

A friend who's a GP said the cases have dropped right down, but that where she works a MW had it when there was an outbreak. I'm on south coast though do very different to Scotland!

badguider · 15/07/2013 15:04

just realised what I wrote - obviously I haven't had diptheria and tetanus recently Grin - I have been vaccinated against them recently...
