bad I was convinced mine was breech for the same reasons - never felt any kicks higher up at all. But at my growth scan last week (and in fact at the previous one) she was head down (I'm almost 33 weeks). Still only feel any kicks in bottom half of bump. Maybe she's just got very short legs?!

frogchops · 10/07/2013 11:49

Badguider lots of my kicks are above hips too and mw told me that he was head down...then when I went for 4d scan she said the same and that his head was down, bum by my belly button and his legs bent with feet at the side (so he was kind of at a right angle)

RunningBear78 · 10/07/2013 12:05

I was convinced that mine was lying across with a head on my right, then I went for a scan and he was head down, facing my back with his knees bent and feet towards my stomach! I had no idea as the only wriggles I could feel were on the left and right of my belly button quite low down, which I suppose must have been knees and elbows?

badguider I wouldn't worry too much about it now, I think 34-36 weeks is when most babies turn and descend, but even after that they can be (wo)man-handled/encouraged to turn round ...at least I've been assured of that by ante-natal yoga peeps and a few books.

JammyTummy · 10/07/2013 12:28

I had my GP apt and was told that it is at 38 weeks they want to know for sure which position the baby is lying in, so I guess we all have a little while to sort that out still!
I was really sure that mine was lying across my tummy, but apparently it was head down with bum on my left and feet and hands to the side.

Treated myself to a nice nursing nightie from Amoralia which came today, I really like it! It buttons all the way down and has an inbuilt bra which is half separate to the rest of the nightie and unclips down the middle. Really nice colour too! I recommend. Thought it would also be good for labour, pre and post pool (if I manage to have one).

They can turn them at about 38 weeks but it'd hurt like hell! If you're worried, get a birthing/exercise ball and bounce on that every day, plus spend lots of time on your hands and knees - not very ladylike but very effective. Also good if your baby is back to back and needs turning the right way round (their spine should be at the front by your belly button for easiest natural exit!).
If you want to feel whether the baby has its bum up high,, you have to really give your tummy a good squash up top to identify their bony bottom! My midwife isn't shy about having a feel, so now I'm not either. It won't hurt them!

Readytosettle · 10/07/2013 12:44

Mine's head down...the biggest clue was the hiccups, very low down below!

badguider · 10/07/2013 12:49

We have an exercise ball at home, time to pump it up I think.

The girl in my yoga class had an ECV (manual turning) at about 38 weeks and it was agony for her and didn't work. They discovered in the csection that she has a heart-shaped uterus so his head was stuck at the top and couldn't turn.

But you're right, that's rare and the majority of babies do turn themselves (and if they don't then ECVs do have a 50% success rate).

I just turned up for my 32 week app, after 15 mins of receptionist faffing around they realised the midwife wasn't there. One of them got hold of her and she said she can only see me on Monday at 3.15, quite possibly the most inconvenient time and virtually impossible for me to be there due to work commitments. I'm so ashamed to admit - I burst into tears!!!! What an idiot. I've been stressing about this app as I've been measuring big and today she was going to decided whether I'll have a scan next week or not. Sorry to moan, had to get that off my chest!

frogchops · 10/07/2013 13:25

Oh flip, not silly to burst into tears at all. I know for a fact I would've done. They don't realise how these appointments are literally often the only thing on our minds for a week leading up to them.

CharlW1 · 10/07/2013 13:47

Flip I had a similar experience today - I went to the hospital and waited over an hour for the midwife to then tell me that she put the wrong date on my letter and she should have put the 11th and not the10th and that I would have to come back tomorrow. I explained that I have work commitments and she just said 'well you'll have to sort that as the consultant does need to see you tomorrow' honestly there is no realisation that people have other commitments at all. I have now had to explain it to work and rearrange all my meetings.

Also for those that don't know - the next sale starts this weekend. I have had a preview invite and just had a sneaky peak at what's going to be in the sale - they have plenty of maternity things (though I'm going to try and not buy any more maternity clothes and make do with what I have) loads of half price baby clothes (and not all pink and blue either) and also extra wide fit shoes (for those having major problems with swelling like I am at the moment).

flipflump · 10/07/2013 14:05

Frog you'll set me off again. You are right, I'd been counting down to this app for 4 weeks. Charl, it's so annoying isn't it. It makes for 2 awkward days rather than 1. Time to go speak to the boss Hmm

DerbyNottsLeicsNightNanny · 10/07/2013 14:50

Can I join the thread? Age 34, 30wks pg with dc2, ds is 3.5yrs. Huge already (I mean HUGE!), low iron, hating every min & can't wait for it to be over! Measuring big & 20wk scan showed low lying placenta so have a scan at 33wks to check things out. Weight gain hideous, had put on 2 stone at 20wks, haven't weighed myself since but expecting to put on around 4stone totalHmm

This is definitely going to be the last baby for me I can't go through it again!

CharlW1 · 10/07/2013 15:09

Welcome Derby I'm expecting my first - a girl. A few of us have low lying placentas - I have my scan on Friday when I'll be 32 weeks.
Feeling huge too - not helped by thus great and swelling feet!

Well done jenni was thinking this needed doing, but didn't quite get around to it!

Do you want to message fl0 as you've offered to be a second admin for the group?

Fozziebearmum2be · 10/07/2013 17:11

Thanks Jennimoo, must have taken a while to cross ref :-)

Agree sounds sensible to change the name and then remove those people who aren't mnetters. I imagine now they are listed on this thread if they are on here they will come forward so they're not removed.

Know there was some discussion around this the other week, but dh and I have been to our first 'parentcraft' class (no idea why it's not called antenatal!) Anyway we were both pretty impressed, the mw talked through all the pain relief methods and we worked in groups to determine adv and disadvantages. But she was very balanced and urged everyone not to rule anything out, as you don't know how you will feel and that every woman labours differently.

She also recommended that if you go in the pool to wear either nothing (no thanks....!) a bikini top, tankini or tight vest. She said that often people with a big teeshirt end up being weighed down and end up whipping it off as its not comfy so defeats the object.

Off to another one next week then hypnobirthing starts :-)

I'm not overly worried about labour at this point, least not around the pain, just hate the idea of the lack of dignity.... Sure I won't care at the time, but it just feels so wrong to be splayed out with what feels like loads of people peering at me...know they've seen it all before though..... Am I being daft?

badguider · 10/07/2013 17:17

PMd you Jenni

SGJ · 10/07/2013 17:24

Jenni - my spreadsheet twin, I have literally just finished doing exactly the same thing!! If you didn't live so far away I'd take you out for pastries Grin

jennimoo · 10/07/2013 17:24

Thanks bad guider!

I'm happy to collate PMs from those i listed who I've either missed or aren't on the spreadsheet yet. I'll message Flo too...

weebarra · 10/07/2013 18:50

Thanks for your work jenni. Just feel a bit odd as we've all been chatting for months before the fb page was set up.
We're still in spain, weather is in the 30's. Have bought a few baby bits and pieces here - part of me would love to know what sex our baby is as the unisex stuff is not quite as nice!

kipsonline · 10/07/2013 19:51

Ooh flip and charl that's annoying about your appts, I'd be mad too!

I had my 33 wk midwife check today, all ok. Measuring 32cm and the boy is head down 3/5 engaged... All systems go!!

CharlW1 · 10/07/2013 19:59

Good work Jenni andSGJ - I think we will all feel alot better once it's sorted.

CheeseStrawCraving · 10/07/2013 20:03

Thanks for all your sneezing advice folks!

So kips if they've told you he's 3/5 engaged does that mean it's possible to predict a window for going into labour/giving birth, or is that a really silly question?!

jennimoo · 10/07/2013 20:11

Cheesestraw - I think engagements an indicator baby might be ready, but you can even go into labour (I think) without being engaged and baby's head can pop in and out so doesn't mean too much.

RakeABedOfTyneFilth · 10/07/2013 20:18

wow kips, 3/5 engaged at 33w!! I had 32w appt last week and was presenting free but cephalic so not a worry. MW said they were happy not to feel baby engaged until 36w but I guess I just have to hope there's no last minute somersault into transverse or breech.

who was saying about having to tense tummy when sneezing? I have to do that too (arsing cocking hayfever) and make sure I'm not twisted or in any sort of unstable posture or as you say, feels like a pulled muscle. And of course the little sneezewees...
