smitten tv scheduling as in u decide what's on tv? Lol

Haylebop12 · 05/07/2013 15:55

Mr whippy not on the avoid list!! Well that's just made me rather happy! Summer here I come!

Shirehobbit · 05/07/2013 16:04

I'll confess to eating camembert and having a Mr Whippy in the last couple of months, but I baked the cheese (it was glorious btw) and decided the risk was low with the ice cream.

I honestly thought abstinence from alcohol would be very tough, it was just such a part of my social life, but I've found it pretty easy (so far - the upcoming weddings may be a different matter!)
I've had the odd low alcohol lager (2-3%) and a glass of wine, but they've just not hit the same spot as Pre-pregnancy drinks did, if that makes sense?

As for number of dc, we're so chuffed to have got this far with a pregnancy at last, that going through all that heartache again seems a big step to take.
And, financially, two may also stretch us too far.
But I always imagined I'd have two, close together (as in one academic year apart).

I guess we'll just see how we go.

Shirehobbit · 05/07/2013 16:06

Also - bagged salads are banned?! News to me, we get through loads.

HotSoupDumpling · 05/07/2013 16:45

I've been eating bagged salads, runny egg, occasional mouthful of yummy wine. And soft frogurt etc. I do remember what happened to Cherry and think that if the NHS warns us then there is a (tiny) residual statistical risk - I have just enough 'naughty' things to make me feel happy with living!

funkky · 05/07/2013 17:12

I have definitely had a few naughty things though completely abstained from most things in first trimester, after that I have tried to eat/ drink reasonable quantities rather than totally abstaining.

Re kids: its our first but DH and I want to have two and adopt one after those. The adoption will very much depends on finances as DH is 41 and nt sure how long his current earnings or strength to run after toddlers can hold up

cuillereasoupe · 05/07/2013 17:14

I'd love to have another in a year or two but given that this one was a bit of a medical miracle and I'm already pushing it age-wise I'm not confident that it'll happen.

Soupqueen · 05/07/2013 17:17

Bagged salads aren't on the nhs list as far as I recollect? I do know a friend who avoided them but I'm not going further than the nhs list, it's bad enough!

Oddly though, salad is something I have completely gone off.

It was nice of the other semi finalists to keep their game going, might be a chance of catching the Murray game now (if all these tourists getting on the bus would stop asking questions!)

OrangeBlossom2 · 05/07/2013 17:24

Yes very. Hot here, 30 degrees in my car on the way home! End of term do tonight (three weeks before the end of term for some reason!) is a disco cruise on a boat so there will be no escaping before midnight! Come home straight away for a shower and a sit down, my legs are swollen.

I am off alcohol and any of the real food no-nos, but not all the things in the latest report like tinned food, cooking in non stick pans, anything kept in plastic etc.

I have also slept on my back the last couple of nights which was so comfortable. I don't like being on my side. I was really propped up on pillows and felt fine but did worry a bit that I had deprived bean of oxygen so will probably go back to side sleeping for a while.

Midwife appointment today fine, pretty uneventful. Baby's heart rate 148 (girl? Boy?), no problems. Midwife was really pushing iron supplements again even though my iron levels were all fine because I don't eat red meat. But she said there was no risk of overdosing on iron which I know isn't true because my grandfather is currently slowly dying due to too much iron (a condition called haemochromatosis) and I have heard of children becoming very ill from taking their parents iron tablets thinking they are sweets, so I don't really trust her opinion. She also said I could get it from food if I eat lots of spinach/brown pasta etc and I eat lots of even better iron rich foods.

Smitten1981 · 05/07/2013 17:30

No way Clapham. That's my actual job, I do EPGs. Who did you work for? Global? Red Bee?

On the whole bagged salad debate, it was my midwife who stressed not to eat them. I remember thinking it was a bizarre thing to insist on over things like unpasteurised cheese and milk, obviously I ignored her.

Having said that I moved hospital because the midwife I saw was crap, so she probably was wrong.

PseudoBadger · 05/07/2013 17:33

Bagged salad is also not on the UK list.

ananikifo · 05/07/2013 17:34

These "banned" lists are very subjective and cultural. As an HCP trained in Canada I can't bring myself to have any alcohol (except for Communion, bc I'm a real rebel) even though logically I know a glass of wine once a week in my second trimester is very low risk. . In Ontario bars have a picture of a pregnant woman and a warning not to drink, similar to the warnings on cigarette packets. It's much more culturally acceptable there to tell ppl not to drink whereas here it's considered unrealistic to do so. Our recommendations for how much alcohol anyone should drink are a bit more strict, too. On the other hand I'm of eastern european origin and you can pry my cured meat out of my cold, dead hands, listeria risk or not. (It's a small risk so none if us should feel too bad).

Today I had a funny spell for the second time in this pregnancy, where I feel hot and sick and my vision is blurred and I need to sit down. I think it's a combination of heat, standing for relatively long periods, and low blood sugar. I knew it was happening so excused myself and sat down but it was one of those situations where everyone's nice comments made me feel more and more embarrassed. Blush

OrangeBlossom2 · 05/07/2013 17:34

It was in the news recently about bagged salads causing listeria

article

I tried washing them or buyingwhole lettuces and washing them but it is a pain ehen yu are rushing arouns and now I don't bother. We eat about 3 bags of salads every week and I am not too concerned about it.

OrangeBlossom2 · 05/07/2013 17:35

We don't want any more fainting spells! There was a week where it seemed everyone was at it.

ananikifo · 05/07/2013 17:36

Bagged salads are a salmonella risk after a big outbreak in the US. I'm pretty sure they're on the American banned list.

PseudoBadger · 05/07/2013 17:39

Well technically they pose a risk of salmonella, listeria and cryptosporidium - and possible E Coli as well!

ananikifo · 05/07/2013 17:42

All of this did cross my mind as i opened my bag of salad yesterday and ate it without washing it first (which I never would have done pre-pregnancy, either)...

Soupqueen · 05/07/2013 17:42

orange if your iron levels are fine, I'd ignore your midwife.

Soupqueen · 05/07/2013 17:48

Hit post too soon. It's such a lazy assumption - no meat therefore low in iron.

Natalieand · 05/07/2013 17:59

orange that's very interesting about dying from too much iron, I took dd to doctors on several occasions as she was falling asleep at all times of the day sometimes just sitting up on the floor and they ran a blood test which said low iron count, anyway now she's on liquid iron twice a day and now I'm panicking she will be having too much? But then would he prescribe it if she don't need it? She's only 2.8 years

Flyer747 · 05/07/2013 18:08

Pseudo I am going to Greece on Wednesday and I love Greek salads, however I have heard mixed reviews about eating feta as some people have said not all of it is pasteurised. We are staying in a small resort with only a handful of tavernas. What would your professional opinion be? Thanks

Soupqueen · 05/07/2013 18:10

natalie, if she has low iron and it's prescribed, it's fine.

PseudoBadger · 05/07/2013 18:12

Feta is fine as long as it's pasteurised. So is halloumi. Perhaps look up the Greek for pasteurised so you can ask :o

Soupqueen · 05/07/2013 18:14

Must stop posting too soon! Is the iron helping her?

Flyer747 · 05/07/2013 18:17

Thanks I will do. I had halloumi for my lunch today with some oregano sprinkled on, 'twas yummy Smile
