New thread as we appear to be talking a fair bit!

Lets hope we've all given birth by the end of this one :-)

My solution to the bf problem = nipple shields. They are amazing. I was at point of tears with both nipples macerated. How people manage without is beyond me, and Polly doesn't seem to mind them at all! Buy immediately!!

pinkapples · 16/06/2013 18:08

I've bought some nipple shells to wear under my clothes so nipples can heal when not feeding she's been beautiful this afternoon and despite tug when she latches is all good during the feed have tried the deep latch and is coming on which is good just would like the nipple damage done on the first day to heal as its quite sore right nipple is hard Sad

No milk coming in yet will be 4 days tomorrow so hopefully soon and she can have some proper feeds

Another quick one how often are you top/tailing and/or bathing? Theiah was born Thursday and we've done neither yet

pinkapples · 16/06/2013 18:09

Oh and I didn't think you could have nipple shields yet?

Olimoss · 16/06/2013 18:28

Gosh, although I'm sad I didn't get the opportunity to breast feed, and am getting quite sore nipples from all the hardcore expressing, I think maybe it's still a lot less painful than what you're all going through!

Bathing - Joe's been home 9 days and has had 3 baths (all in the kitchen sink!!) - he loves it, so I'm tempted to do it every day but he came home from NICU wi v v dry skin so really we are doing every 2-3 days and moisturising him afterwards. Dreading when he grows out of the sink and have to break my back leaning over the bath! We do have one of those Angelcare bath chairs but J loves being immersed in the water and it'll mean running a v deep bath for a v small baby! I think I might just bri g him in a shower with me, actually.

Hospital bag - after a Csction, in for 2 nights - pack of Boots maternity pads (the best ones), nappies, 2 babygros, 3 singlet vests, lots of muslins, some yoga-type trousers and couple biggish tshirts for me, giant undies, toiletries, heaps of fresh fruit. I found I craved salads and fruit mostly, on the tropically hot ward. Didn't eat the hospital food at all, bar breakfast toast (which, incidentally, didn't arrive till 9am - I was ravenous!). Obv didn't get to use everything as J was rushed away but seemed a good amount of stuff. My Mum also brought in my V pillow and another from my bed, but that's my preference. I need a heap of pillows! V pillow was aces actually.

Just wanted to link to my thread on breastfeeding where I got some lovely reassurance and great advice (thanks massagegirl!)

You're not alone. I'm mixed feeding at the moment, hoping to increase supply and get DS back on the breast more regularly. He has an apparently perfect latch and technique but think he did quite early damage to my nipples when he was poorly and not latching on so well. I would howl every time he fed (which was constant).

It isn't as easy for everyone as all the books say, I felt like a total failure, but feeling more positive now especially seeing the change in my boy :)

forgetmenots · 16/06/2013 18:45

Would help if I actually posted the link...

Just checking in on the new thread. Have come out of my pit today following three consecutive migraines. I had to go to OOH because the pain was breaking through making me cry an hour after taking painkillers. Fifty hours of hell. Low point would be sobbing my heart out in front of DD, labour is bound to be better than this!

On the plus side, my mum reckons it could be a sign as hormonal migraines run in the family. A quick google seems to back her up, so I'm hoping a bit more than before with every twinge!

pinkapples · 16/06/2013 19:17

That's like me forgets midwifes say latch and feeding are good I think the damage has already been done will get shields though sounds good idea to me

pinkbear82 · 16/06/2013 19:28

hope the migraines stay away for you!

're bathing violet has probably been every other day. and midwife came up with wonderful solution to breaking back over bath - have baby in bath with you! have someone hand to u/to hand back too - but it's wonderful, and means you can have it that bit deeper but feel confident!
good luck!

redwellybluewelly · 16/06/2013 19:40

forget our DD1 was also very sick at birth but we couldn't feed her until day 10 so it was a case of ng then combine feeding to start with and very hard work - I'm pleased we did get there eventually but wish I hadn't felt the awful guilt about formula to begin with.

My tummy feels really bruised and swollen still, ten days post op, I am trying to reduce the painkillers but wondered if anyone else the same?

RueDeWakening · 16/06/2013 20:07

forget - like redwelly's DD1, DS1 was initially on TPN (nutrients straight into the blood stream) then NG tube fed for nearly a month, then finally got to try BFing - we mix fed until he weaned as he needed a prescribed formula to help weight gain for the first few months. I gave up feeling guilty about it, and would totally recommend going with whatever works for you :)

Re baths, M has had precisely 1 bath in the kitchen sink so far (4 weeks old! Blush) and gets top and tailed twice a day. DS1 didn't have a bath till a week after he came home from hospital, he was in there for 5 weeks and the nurses said they didn't recommend bathing tiny babies very often as they can't hold their body temp well enough so get cold very easily. A good excuse... :o

massagegirl · 16/06/2013 20:27

No worries forget :) I m totally

massagegirl · 16/06/2013 20:28

I'm totally over the guilt! Just happy to see a hungry eating baby! Hope the feeding is getting better for you too.

Olimoss · 16/06/2013 20:29

I don't get baths! They're hot, horrible things....might be a cultural difference.....! I love a good shower, though. As an Aussie I'm v v keen J loves and is confident in water so maybe I should just get him swimming ASAP....

MrsBri · 16/06/2013 20:41

Oil, I want Baby B to be an early, confident, swimmer too as I almost drowned as a toddler so am not a strong swimmer at all (I have an aversion to going under water, funnily enough!). I can swim distance but haven't been able to do life saving stuff etc.

I'm going to make sure baby goes swimming ASAP, probably with DH as he's a much stronger swimmer than I am.

pink ahhh I see. It's very unusual. I like it. Theres some lovely names on this thread.

Well I went in for sweep. 2.5cms. Midwife had a good go of it. Ouchy! Unfortunately blood pressure was abit high, so they sent me over to labour ward. Things still going ok, contractions getting more intense, but after about 4 hours everything sort of stalled. Sad
Contractions suddenly much less painfuL and further apart, i turned tens machine turned down.
I suggested I go home, midwives agreed.

So I've come home, taken codeine, just about to go in bath and plug falls out in one big lump. Oh ma gawd!! Why doesn't anyone tell you how hideous it is?! Shock i thought I was birthing a slug. Why does no one tell you that part?

So i feel like im back to square one. Envy

MrsBri · 16/06/2013 20:44

Ha ha, coffee, clearly the contractions loosened it for you!

Fingers crossed it all starts up again soon and baby arrives ASAP. :-)

Baby swimming might be a good way for you to get happier in the water MrsBri - the classes are usually in shallow pools, etc....

learnermummy · 16/06/2013 20:52

Baby swimming is great, have done it with both of mine and they're both confident swimmers. DS2 could swim unaided just after he turned 3. From memory babies have to be around 4 months old to start.

MrsBri · 16/06/2013 20:54

No chance, Oli, that boat has sailed! I'm perfectly happy to swim and used to regularly swim a mile at a time before work. But I detest going underwater and won't swim in the sea. I just don't want to pass my aversion onto baby.

had a lovely 2 hour nap while dp walked tge dog and made dinner, felt like id dented my knees and bruised them being on my knees in the bathroom cleaning,
one good thing has come out of today, lost a big chunk of my plug, does it always have blood in it? actually looked like id got a cold and sneezed in it while I wiped, only lost bits of it till now

pinkapples · 16/06/2013 20:56

Out to tesco for boob cabbage tomorrow hehe

CoffeeandNumbers · 16/06/2013 20:57

Oooh the thread moved on to swimming by the time I posted.

I got a good lungfull of water when I was about five in butlins. My parents then went mental for me to have swimming lessons. I'm so glad they did. It's such an important skill to teach a child. It's up there with manners and learning to read for me. It's always one of those things where you could imagine the worst happening and the what ifs.

My husband just learned to swim on our last holiday at the age of 32. I told mil it was like child abuse not teaching him!!!

MrsB Olis suggestion is brilliant I think. It could be a nice activity you learn and get confident at together.

CoffeeandNumbers · 16/06/2013 21:02

Sorry MrsB thread is moving to fast for me. I'm on my phone in the bath, making mooing noises again. Sorry for suggesting rubbish!

steff my plug was huge and vomit inducing, it came out earlier. Was like a big blood stained fanny bogie. traumatised for life

curiousgeorgie · 16/06/2013 21:06

I took my DD to Aquatots from 12 weeks, and she absolutely loved it... She has so much water confidence now and we got great underwater shots of her along the way.

I'm definitely going to take this baby too, we do absolutely loads of activities and its by far one of the best.
