Woofers, didn't see anaesthetist until I was in labour and begging for an epidural with DS...then he was my bestest friend (even though it took two attempts to get the bloody needle to stick in).

Asking for Homebirth at appointment on Tuesday Tens machine has arrived, bag is packed...just need a baby now.

LilPeasMama · 12/07/2013 01:05

Congrats brie

It's all definitely seeming more real now....eeek
I finished work

LilPeasMama · 12/07/2013 01:17

Stupid phone!

....on Weds and had lots of cards and presents which was lovely.
I've been to antenatal classes at the hospital which have been good, trying to have an open mind about pain relief but I seem to be set against epidurals for some reason.

I have a new dryer arriving in the morning so I can wash n dry till my hearts content and I will be seeing the midwife in the afternoon.

I am loving this weather we are having, just wish I had a garden so I can sit out!!
Not enjoying swollen ankles though.....
34+3

RuckAndRoll · 12/07/2013 10:18

Congratulations brie!
I'm now starting to look around the flat panicking about how much there is still to do, although hospital bags are packed which is a start.
Antenatal class and a swim today I think

babyhmummy01 · 12/07/2013 11:07

OK folks so back from 34 week check with consultant and the anaesthetist and my blood is boiling! Does anyone know how to change hospitals at this late stage as I am seriously considering it after today.

Arrived in plenty of time for my 0830 apt, there was no one in the waiting room and yet they still managed to be 10 mins late, ok so I can forgive that, my DBIL is a surgeon so I know they can be called away or in meetings that run over etc, but am called through by a Maternity Assistant (I believe they are just HCA's?) who calls out "Mrs Babyh" it never even registered it was me as I am Ms not Mrs so took a few minutes. I politely corrected her that I am Ms not Mrs and was rudely told "Well we call everyone Mrs here" This has not been my past experience with the hospital as they have either called me by my first name or Ms Babyh so was not a great start. Then the Consultant barely had 2 words to say to me, anaesthetist wasn't available so had to wait for the on call one to be paged - sorry but YOU made the apt so why the heck wasn't he there for my 0830 apt.

He was ok but very strongly insisting and bordering on demanding I had no choice over labour other than an epidural which I REALLY don't want. I explained to him that unless absolutely medically necessary I did not want an epidural as the thought of being out of control, on a bed, unable to move terrifies the life out of me. He reluctantly agreed but due to my asthma and allergy to pain meds I can only have that or Entenox which I said was fine. He listened to my chest and said I could leave the hospital but never gave me my notes back.

I called in at the reception desk to ask how I got my notes back and a different Maternity Assistant to above said she would go and find them for me. Then out of the blue the rude assistant appears and barks at me that I can leave as the Doctor has finished with me and I don't need to be there. I tried to politely (through gritted teeth) tell her that I needed my notes to which I was told "well she has just told you she is getting them" - Que my blood really starting to boil at this point.

The nice MA came back with my notes and muttered that as discussed with Consultant I was now under MW led care, I explained that nothing of that ilk had been discussed and that the as the anaesthetist was demanding epidural and possibly spinal for a c section if my asthma is still bad when I go into labour then I needed to be consultant led so off she trotted to confirm...am I wrong to be reallt annoyed and quite upset by this whole debarcle?! I am considering writing to the hospital and complaining but not sure if I am taking it too muh to heart...please help

Mrsd77 · 12/07/2013 11:58

BabyH did you get your notes back in the end? What has the consultant / anaesthetist written? That is what will guide labour ward when the time comes.

Perhaps you should also go and see the midwife that you trust as that will help your anxiety. If you are still a little bamboozled, could you take another supportive person along with you to a re organised appointment.

I complained to the NHS trust after DS birth but only feel it should be done due to quality of care. Lateness and wrong names are a little annoying but also issues of basic human error.

Good luck.

babyhmummy01 · 12/07/2013 12:07

Yeah eventually!! Consultant had put MLC but has now amended it to 'decide at term' and anaesthetist hasn't put anything at all, he said we will discuss again when I go into labour.

Am gonna ring my MW on Tuesday when she is back at my surgery and ask for her help cos the whole thing is ridiculous. I am not so Angry at the wrong name more the attitude when I corrected her really. There is just no need for rudeness, all she needed to say was 'sorry' surely

Mrsd77 · 12/07/2013 12:17

Some people are just rude! I wouldn't let it worry you.

Maybe they feel the ultimate decision needs to be made by the person who is accountable for your care as you give birth. You may not need huge intervention. Some ladies pop their babies on paracetamol and gas and air. I wasn't one of them but found gas and air tremendous stuff and didn't mind my epidural because it took the pain away. I could have kissed my anaesthetist tbh!!

From what I've read, your DP is a steady sort. As long as he knows your wishes, let him communicate for you. Concentrate on staying calm as it will all go much better. Easier said than done I know.

babyhmummy01 · 12/07/2013 14:52

Thanks MrsD he is pretty amazing, unfortunately due to a youthful indiscression he may not be allowed to be present but my best mate is very good at not being bullied.

I think the issue all depends on how bad my asthma is, I am really bad this week cos of the heat and high pollen count so am coughing like a trooper, the anaesthetist says if I present like that in labour then it will all be academic as it will be EMCS all the way which I am hoping to avoid.

The hospital have rung me regarding my complaint and the Clinic Matron was very apologetic and basically said she knew exactly who I had had the issue with and she had a bit of a reputation for being rude so should think she is up for a telling off on Monday when she is back in.

Its not so much the intervention that they are worried about, its the reaction of my asthma to the gas and air and the fact that the only pain relief that is low risk is the epidural, he wittered on about if it was the USA I could have a mobile epidural but they don't offer them at my hospital so its all or nothing Sad

TrixieLulamoon · 12/07/2013 15:40

Congrats Brie I swear I am not at all jealous of you and Stiggly having your tiny little bundles to cuddle!! Envy

Babyh She sounds horrible, bet she goes home to a microwave dinner for one and 10 cats (always makes me feel better when I imagine that Wink)

You are very lucky your appointment was only 10 mins delayed. Every time I have been to the consultant, we are given a time. I turn up 10 mins early and then I am sat there for at least an hour waiting every time. Once it was an hour and a half. The antenatal clinics are very busy, especially the one for my consultant, she is very popular!

As for ending up with an EMCS, it is not really all that bad. I won't go into detail unless you would like to know more, but I will say my recoveries were quick and pain free. I had discomfort in my scar when laughing coughing etc but that was it. I know everyone is different but that was my experience.

Having said all that, I too am hoping to avoid another EMCS! Mostly because I would like the opportunity to have more children If i so wish and I really don't know how many CS my body can take. I haven't decided if I would like any more children however I would hate to be told it isn't safe and have the choice taken away.

Gary Good luck with the home birth question! Hope you get the answer you want.

babyhmummy01 · 12/07/2013 15:51

haha Trixie that thought has made me feel a bit better! I bet the cats hate her too!

Its just the whole CS thing in general I think cos there is still a risk albeit a much much smaller one and easier to manage!

FoofFighter · 12/07/2013 17:19

Big congratulations to you brie and your family :) Thanks

Skinnydecafflatte · 12/07/2013 20:04

Hi

Just checking in, I did join a the beginning and have been only just able to keep up with posts and haven't had chance to post for ages.

Anyway I'm now 35+2 and here's the tmi bit just been to the loo and have had some brown blood, I also have mild period type pains which is how it all started last time, the pains that is, not the blood. Just phoned ward who told me to put my feet up and wait an hour and see how it goes. Of course my husband has just gone out to his sport for a couple of hours! So we may have a live birth thread or it may amount to nothing but for the moment I may need some company.

Bags are packed thankfully...

Gerty1002 · 12/07/2013 21:29

Hey skinny, any progress? Hope you're doing ok! At 33 with my first so can't offer much advice or experience but here to keep you company and wish you luck!
