I'm just really nervous about it all! Am not so worried about whether she'll fall out but if she'll adapt to bed with bag or whether we go straight for duvet - but then worried how she'll sleep if all she's ever known is her Grobag!!! Help......

OP posts:
mabel1973 · 06/06/2006 15:36

Cori we have just taken DS out of his grobag as well, it was when we took the sides off his cot bed.. It's fine actually, and although there is a duvet on the bed he doesn't tend to sleep underneath it, esp as it so warm at the moment.
I was also worried that his grobag provided a feeling of security, but he's soon got used to sleeping without it and after a few hiccups we are having no trouble with him going down at night now.

Coriander73 · 06/06/2006 16:15

What sort of hiccups?!

OP posts:
clairemow · 06/06/2006 18:41

The hiccup we had was the novelty of being able to get out. That took a couple of weeks and controlled crying to sort out (that was two nights - 45 mins the first, 10 the second), and now he settles no problem at all, and hasn't been a problem in other peoples' houses and in a caravan - although we do still take the stair gate to put across the door if we're not at home.

If DS is a good sleeper anyway, then moving to a bed shouldn't make any difference I don't expect. How old is DS? Make sure you explain to him about the big boy's bed, and how special it makes him. Our DS was really excited, and now has to be coaxed out after his nap in the day!

clairemow · 06/06/2006 18:42

Sorry Cori, meant DD for you!

compo · 06/06/2006 19:42

We didn't use a grobag for very long with ds so he's just got a duvet although so far he doesn't seem to sleep under it. So far he hasn't moved about much and I'm not sure he's figured he can just get out!! I'll let you know how it goes. Now all we need to do is potty train him (God knows when, we're thinking of leaving it quite late, maybe when he's nearer three) and he's all done Grin

puppy · 06/06/2006 22:05

hiya,

homemama no need to apologise was joking with you all, we all can't remember who posts and when lol, will be thinking of you when you have your scan and I hope all goes well, when is your scan?

Welcome clairenow Smile

Good luck to all with lo transfering to big boy/girl beds, I see some of you use grobags, with ds we were not aware of them, do you all recomend them? We are considering them this time am I correct in saying they are used from 3 months?

Coriander73 · 07/06/2006 10:29

Puppy,

Grobags are fab fab fab!!! They can be used (if my memory serves me well) from when the baby is approx 10lb - although I do believe you can get ones from birth now too. We used them with DD from 8 weeks old & have been a Godsend....DH is hoping that indeed we have another girl otherwise we're going to have to buy all new boy bags...as DD's aren't what you'd call unisex (apart from her summer one we bought a couple of weeks ago....!!) check out their site at www.bumpto3.com

OP posts:
clairemow · 07/06/2006 10:54

Hi Puppy, I'm having another DS, otherwise I could have swapped my boy grobags for your girl ones!! I also think they are fab, and I'm sure it's 10lbs also when you can start using them. Which will be great for our babies, born in September, as it'll be getting colder by the time they get to that weight!

Enjoy the sun today - I've been told it's going to be really hot (in the southwest anyway!)

clairemow · 07/06/2006 10:55

I am dim. Pregnancy has affected my brain. Sorry, meant Coriander, not Puppy re. the grobags. Will sign off now and try to get brain to function in less random fashion...

mabel1973 · 07/06/2006 11:38

cori - only just logged on.
re: hiccups - nothing too serious, we had the incident where we found him asleep behind the door one morning, and as he has a sofa bed in his room as well, I have found him alseep on there probably twice. He's been out of it over a month now, so I don't think that's bad going.
We had a short period where he would get out of bed when we 1st put him to bed, but only if we sat in the room with him ( a clever distarction tactic I think!) - now we pop him in bed, say good night and leave STRAIGHT AWAY!!! Then he stays put!

mandaz · 07/06/2006 12:31

Hi all

Actually, you can use some the Grobags from 7lb now, if you go onto the website and into the individual types it shows you the weights at the bottom. I've bought the Sam Bear one for when LO arrives and I'm going to get another one as a spare. I'm just not sure whether to buy both in the 2.5 tog or one in the 1 tog as September could still be warm but will be cooling down if you see what I mean. A friend of mine suggested putting LO in a travel cot downstairs for naps during the day and then in the cot at night-time so they know there's a difference between day and night. So, I think I'll put a different gro-bag downstairs for daytime too.

Everything going ok at the moment this end. Am still feeling some pretty hefty kicks from LO. Nothing much happening really other than an increasing need for ice cream! Hope everyone else is well.

clairemow · 07/06/2006 12:52

Maybe they all do that "getting in and out" game when you first move them to a bed. That was the biggest hiccup we had too. Now we do the same as Mabel - read bedtime story, sing a song and then say goodnight, and leave immediately, and don't go back in! We have high handles on our doors, so he can't open them anyway, so it really only arises now when we're staying somewhere else - but the last couple of times have been no trouble. Guess it's just the novelty.

Is anyone else getting braxton hicks already? Is this normal? I am getting them a few times a day, and really tight. Not painful, just have to stop rub the bump a bit.

Coriander73 · 07/06/2006 13:14

Hi Mandaz,

We've always had two 2.5 Grobags on the go plus 2 1.0 for last summer & for this - although remember when it was really hot for those few days last July & August? She just slept in a vest & that was it. It does seem a lot of money & faffing around but although we've only ever had to change her 4 times (through being sick) it was more piece of mind knowing that we could just grab the clean one & put the dirty one in the wash!

Re sleeping etc...we had DD in moses basket downstairs during the day (with blankets funnily enough) & back in basket upstairs with Grobag on at night so she'd know the difference. However after about a year or so we used Grobag during the day as well as found she was moving so much with a blanket that when it was cold she was freezing. It all seemed to work out ok despite my protestations that she'd get confused & think it was bedtime...so much worry for nothing!!!!!

Clairemow, no BH yet just bloody sciatica!!!!! :o

OP posts:
homemama · 07/06/2006 13:16

Hi ladies,
Yes, the grobags are fab!!! You can use them from birth now as long as baby weighs 7lbs I think. Make sure you buy an actual Grobag from Bumpto3 rather than just a baby sleeping bag from anywhere else. They really are different. Also they are the only ones recommended by the SIDS org. Don't forget to get the 10% off code from mumsnet.

Where all your LOs over 2 when you moved them to a big bed? DS isn't 2 til nearly Christmas so maybe I'm rushing things. Just not sure whether we need to buy another cot. We have a crib for the first few months but I'm not sure how he'll be about giving up his bed and his room for the baby. (We're hoping to move him to a bigger room across the landing and put baby next to us in box room.)

Last night I felt the first of those hefty 3rd trimester type movements. Smile Smile For the benefit of first timers, those cute kicks you're getting constantly soon turn into what feels like the loch ness monster weaving its way from one end of your tummy to the other. You start to see lumps sticking out and moving across. It really freaked DH out last time especially when DS squashed himself in one side and I looked very silly and lopsided. He still videod it on his phone though! Grin

compo · 07/06/2006 13:34

Hi Homemama - yes, ds was two in April. To be honest I wouldn't have moved him out of the cot yet if it wasn't for the new baby coming. He seemed prefectly happy in there and never tried to climb out. I'm a great believer in the saying 'if it aint broke don't fix it' lol!!

mandaz · 07/06/2006 13:40

Homemamma- I'm so glad you said that! I can totally relate to the hefty movements. It seems to be particularly when I lie down flat but I've felt a real pressure across my belly button and a hard lump which I assume is LO. It's then moved right the way down my belly. It's actually quite uncomfortable and very Alien-ish Grin

I did get my Grobag from Bump to 3 and will definitely get my 2nd one from there too. I was well pleased with the little thermometer that comes with it (another item off my shopping list!) I'll look for the 10% code too.

clairemow · 07/06/2006 15:25

Hi, our DS was 2 last month - we moved him in April to big bed. I have a friend who swears by moving her sons as early as 18 months though. If it wasn't for no. 2 coming, I would personally have kept DS in a cot for longer I think, but mostly for fear of the changes. Now it's done, it does make going away easier, as he can sleep on any old bed, or on a mattress/lilo, whatever.

TopBanana · 07/06/2006 15:34

I moved dd into a bed at 13 months when I stopped breastfeeding. Although she NEVER slept a whole night in her cot. She hated that cot!!
Shes 2.9 now and has one of those single cabin beds with a slide, she loves it!!

By the way, anyone been having cravings? I haven't been having any this time.

mabel1973 · 07/06/2006 16:37

my ds is 18 months, I did actually start a thread about moving him to a bed and everyone said he was too young and that we should buy another cot for the new baby, but in actual fcat he's been absolutely fine. I think if they sleep well and feel secure anyway, then it doesn't take long for them to settle back down. He is not moving rooms, so still in the same environment.
For anyone thinking of buying a grobag, I often see them in TKMAXX for much cheaper (as little as a tenner) and they are the proper branded ones..That's where I bought my 1st one for DS.
DS always used to sleep in his bouncy chair or pram during the day at home (I tried to put him in his moses basket and his big cot, but he was having none of it until he got to about 5 months.), so I guess I'll do the same thing.
He used to hate that moses basket though - he was much better once he went into his big cot in his own room.

liquidclocks · 07/06/2006 16:43

Hi all - fab weather!!

Homemama - sounds like we're in a similar predicament. my DS is only 2 in November and we're debating the 'big boy bed' issue at the moment. I've bought a carrycot which will do LO till december/january if needs be but I don't want DS to feel like he's being kicked out of his cot so thinking maybe we should do it now. Trouble is we too use grobags and when we tried switching to a duvet a few months back DS ended up on top of it, cold, curled up in a ball every night :( Had to put him back in a grobag after 3-4 week sout of pity! Thinking about trying again now as nights are warmer so he wouldn't get as cold - decisions!?

Welcome clairemow! I've been getting braxton hicks too since about 20 weeks which I thought was way early - midwife said as long as they're not regular it's ok and not to worry - annoying though!

Ah well, DS wants to go back n the garden - I've filled up the washing up bowl and put it on the lawn - best thing ever!!! :o

Mandaz and Homemama, with you on the freaky deaky squirmy alien movements which have been going on for a week or so now along with definate fist/foot thumps!
Don't think I've had BH but as a first timer I wouldn't really know apart from the being 'stretched' feelings I get as my girth expands. Have 35 inch 'waist' now - or at least in the position where my lovely waist once was...

Recommended choccy scoff of the day, frozen snickers bar YUM Grin

Enjoy the weather!
