Still struggling with the heat. It's going to be a looooonnnngg summer!

Marls - we don't have air conditioning. I'm leaving my windows open at night and I have now purchased a small fan for my room, however although it promises to be silent on the box, it's far from so I only put it on for a while on a night.

I'm having a real sweet craving at the moment too. Maybe it's for extra energy with it being so warm (that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!) Grin

LO is still moving around quite a lot. Does anyone know when you go to look around the hospital? Does the mw arrange it or do you do it through the classes?

spinamum · 10/06/2006 16:44

Sorry HIJACK.

i'm from Dec thread, but I was due in Sept 2003.

I'm sending you all my love and sympathy. This weather is horrible. I became addicted to ice cubes in '03.

Hope the summer gets better (ie cooler).

September babies are the BEST(but i'll prob develop a soft spot for Dec ones too)

calvemjoe · 10/06/2006 18:07

Hello everyone, Hope you're all coping in this heat and you're not too uncomfortable. Got back from holiday yesterday afternoon and had a lovely time, also did loads of exercise Shock and felt loads better for it so I'm going to try and keep it up now we're back.

Is anyone with a previous cs getting any pain or discomfort in their scar. Have just started to get discomfort in a straight line across my lower abdomen and can't think of anything else it could be.
Seemed to have missed loads, have read it all through and I hope I've not missed anything, so here goes....

Clairemow, welcome, we share the same due date! Like you, I suffer from terrible migraines when pg and my dr prescribes me morning sickness tablets to take with paracetamol at the begining of the attack. Don't know if you knew, but with a migraine your digestive system stops working and then goes backwards, making you sick. Once this has happened anything you take for it won't be absorbed untill the attack is over. By stopping this from happening it makes the paracetamol more useful and anti-sickness pills have less side affects for pregnancy. As for braxton hicks I get them if I walk for more than 20 meters (it's a nightmare if I nip to the shops!)

Mabel, congrats on your new niece, what a beautiful name. As for being organised, the steraliser is out and has been descaled, newborn toys are out and have been miltoned and I have milk and nappies in too. Not sure why I need to be so organised this time round when ds1 was a week late!

Cori, Happy belated Birthday! Sad about the anti-d at 28 weeks, I hated having it and think I wld decline if they offered it too me now. Don't see the point unless you know bump's blood group (because it stings so much!)

Homemama, when is your rescan? I moved ds to a big boys bed at 19 mnths because he kept on climbing out of his cot. We kept him in his grobag for the 1st few nights because he wouldn't lay down [isn't my son a wierdo emoticon] without it on, but we also made a big issue of getting him to choose his own duvet covers and then one night just forgot his grobag and he was fine from then on. I toured my hosp at 37 weeks 1st time round because I forgot to make the appointment myself and then there was a massive waiting list. So in ans to your question, I had to ring my hosp and make my own appointment.

Liquidclocks, my ds is into licking things aswell. my latest is 'stop licking the window/daddy'

Sorry for the long post, look after your bumps x

liquidclocks · 10/06/2006 18:07

Hi Mandaz - sorry youre suffering with heat and a noisy fan. We too have all windows open and just about managing. I have sweet cravings too so it MUST be the heat :)

With DS we were shown around the hospital as part of the ante-natal classes which I think started when I was about 28 wks or so. You could always ring your midwifery dept to check. I also found it worth asking if there were any other units in your local area. I was entitled to go to a midwife led unit even though it was half an hour away (my hospital's only 2mins, how lucky!)- I would have loved it as the atmsphere was so relaxed but it wasn't to be - I had to be induced and that counted as a 'complication'!

Have just discovered Del Monte smoothie ice lollies - magical - you can eat them like sweets and know they're good for you and LO too!

compo · 10/06/2006 18:41

Hi everyone Smile Another one suffering in the heat - couldn't sleep at all last night and felt awful getting up for work this morning Sad But I was home in time for the England match so cheered up for that.
I need to ring the hospital I'm going to give birth in as wel for a look around. It's different to the one I had ds in so we need to know where to park etc in an emergency!! Last time when we were shown around it completely freaked me out - especially the room where the do the c-sections!!!

Lysettes · 10/06/2006 20:39

hi hot ladies!

just back from seeing my parents for the weekend and I know this is going to sound horrible, but I was so short tempered because of the heat and the pollen down there that we practically had to leave otherwise i would have been having this baby while doing time for double murder!

KK if you're out there, hope you're ok [hug emoticon]

Clairemow re the migraines - have you tried those cooling pads you can get from all major pharmacies - they have a gel in, and if you put them in the fridge they are extra cool - i used to suffer from migraines badly and they worked wonder- actually come to think of it they'd be good generally for the heat - and they stick to you so you can put them on while you sleep.

cori - i had to go a size up at crave as well, very frustrating - and beware they take ages to send replacements and process refunds...

Marls - Angry at the interfering about you gymming! when will people realise that if we feel we can do something we can?????

the MW are looking out for ankles for me, but it's basically my feet in general, not just the ankles that have totally blown up - very elegant and attractive methinks

I'm back on alpen cravings, which is nowhere as good as Appy's! will have to try that one.

Pol congrats on a biy - we must be boy heavy now?

Mandaz - I have had to arrange the tour as part of my hospital antenatal classes

Sorry for long post again - am back now so will be on much more regularly

we are now on our third footbal match today, and we had the NZ rugby match this morning, and will have rugby again tomorrow morning - I've been particularly bad tempered in the heat so Dh gets to watch as much sport as he wants! bless him he's a saint sometimes lol

pol26 · 10/06/2006 22:15

Hey everyone...

Got the big sis/bro and little bro/sis tee's and sleepsuits from mothercare... ours were with the gift-y type newborn things and were £5 a tee and I think £11 for a sleepsuit.

Not enjoying the heat at all!!!

Today I had to go on a first aid course and so DP had DD and brought her a trampoline... one of those square tp ones. Propmted by me I might add... but anyhow I might as well got it. How feeble was he? Well came home at four thirty, I left at nine this morning and thing still not up- he got it in the morning as he could not stretch the elascticated cord round the bouncing part- the mesh-y thing... So who ended up doing it in the heat as DD was dying to get on it. How hopeless are men. And time after time he couldn't understand how by pulling it tight all the way round would make more slack...... !!! Eventually I did it then he had the nerve to say it had knackered him out!!!!
Still DD has loved bouncing on it in her nappy.

Still too hot here even tho all windows wide and back door open...
hope it cools down soon.

clairemow · 10/06/2006 22:38

Thanks v. much for the advice re. the migraines, liquidclocks and calemjoe - I have been prescribed Paramax for the migraines - think it's a mixture of paracetamol with codeine for the sickness. They haven't been so often this pregnancy as the last one, but I think that might be because I've learnt to take the medication the second I feel one coming on (knew about the digestive system shut down), instead of waiting to see, so the times they've got to the point of no light and sickness are when I've been somewhere without a sachet to hand. Last week I was stuck on a hot train with sun in my face for 2 hours, and that did it. Now I carry them in my purse, bag, changing bag, everywhere! I also discovered the cooling gel things last week - they are great!

Calemjoe - I have also noticed a bit of pain in my c-section scar from last time. Guess it's getting a bit stretched now. Have you been offered an elective one this time? What are you going to do? think I am 90% decided to have it..

compo, I hope you get a better night's sleep tonight - maybe try one of the cooling gel pads on your forehead, or the back of your neck?

We had a lovely time today with friends - they have a great paddling pool, really big, so DS and two friends spent all afternoon splashing about. DH got in at one point as well and got christened the "Big Whale"... The water level rose a bit...

Marls001 · 10/06/2006 22:47

LOL Lysettes about your parents and I totally understand; heat would definitely drive me up a wall - Manda and everyone, I am so sympathetic for your hot summers coping with only open windows and fans to help. At the very least I hope that your fall seasons begins to arrive with late August, and that your summer nights cool off compared to the days.

Manda, maybe try a noisemaker/sleep sound generator to combat the fan/block out surrounding noise? We have two of them, and they have been v. useful both for us and DS for sleeping.

Have since heard that the "concerned" football coach (who called me out at the gym) tends to be the type to go about making enemies due to his ignorance. Can only hope his kind is an anomaly. Still leaving that info at the gym front desk, just in case. Smile

On the plus side, attended a wine tasting with friends last weekend, had about a glass or so total over a few hours, and got absolutely no "looks" or comments! Grin And if anywhere was dreading I might get them here, so v. happy. Grin

Am feeling SO much better today; was able to sleep in until 11:00! Smile

liquidclocks · 10/06/2006 23:00

Yay! Just been on BBC weather site - hot on Sunday, thunder on Monday then back down to a civilised 21 degrees on Tuesday :) (but will still be nice and sunny!)

Going to order my Phil and Teds since no-one can come up with a better deal - feels great to beat mothercare AGAIN! Also have found you can buy new creatis seat in last seasons colours for under £60 on ebay. Who said shopping when pregnant is no fun?! Might get tempted into buying some cute 'boy' newborn clothes soon too... :)

Lysettes · 11/06/2006 11:02

pol you poor thing!

clairemow and anyone really feeling the heat at night - we tried that magicool spray last night and it really helps - boots are doing 3 for 2 on holiday products, so it's slightly less expensive Smile

marls I envy you going to a wine tasting although i haven't felt like drinking since we got pg, and i think i'd fall over at a sniff of wine right now, let alone a glass! I'll be a cheap date for DH when lo arrives!

clairemow · 11/06/2006 14:46

wine tasting does sound good. Has anyone else discovered non-alcoholic Becks? It's not bad, even tastes like beer (or at least I think so - but then haven't had a real beer for 6 months or so).

It's a bit more cloudy here today, so not so stinking hot as yesterday. I've got DH gardening while I mumsnet. Very nice. DS is asleep - one good thing about the hot weather is all this jumping in and out of pools seems to really tire him out - he slept in until 9.10 this morning (from 8 pm last night - a bit late from travelling home - doesn't seem to want to sleep in the car anymore), and probably would have gone longer but DH and I were hungry and got up, so he heard us moving around. He was just opening his eyes as we opened his door. Aaaah! BTW, this isn't usual - normal wake up call is around 7. This was a TREAT!! Grin Smile Wink

calvemjoe · 11/06/2006 14:47

Hey hot ladies, it is way too hot to be pg at the mo! Is anyone else swelling up? I now have shrek feet, swollen legs and ankles, and I'm sitting at work now barefoot cause my shoes don't fit anymore!

Clairemow, was offered an elective but after lots of thought decided to give vbac a go. However, have started to really panic about the whole experience since making the decision so may change my mind at 34 weeks when I see the consultant again. Part of me wants to give my body another go at getting it right and the other part just wants to make sure my little one manages a safe arrival.

Lysettes · 11/06/2006 17:15

calvemjoe - i think we have the same legs! i cotuldn't walk upstairs last night because my knees had swollen so much!

clairemow that lie in sounds a treat! we are panicking because the room for lo only has a velux window and to get the temperature down enough come august / september time we will have to open it, but it will then get light really early! what to do???

bbc weather said it would be stinking all next week but weather.com said it was going to be better and a bit cloudy - like today - much more bearable!

have a good week hot ladies Grin

Coriander73 · 11/06/2006 17:33

Hi all!

How hot?!!! This is like when I was in Madrid with DD a couple of weeks back....:o I've just eaten half a pot of vanilla ice cream just because I can & not really give a damn about the extra calories quite yet & it's hot!!! DD woke up with what looks like an eye infection...been bathing it all day with chamomille tea (old Spanish trick which has worked before in the past) but they are really red this time so not sure what's happening there. Hasn't eaten much either but I'm assuming that's the heat?

Hmm...I've been offered an elective but I've decided to try for a VBAC. Having said that I could change my mind the closer we get but as this is the last baby & after the drama last time I'd like to think I'd give it a go. For anyone in a similar situation, have your scars playing up a bit? Since the heatwave I've been much more aware it's there than ever before...IYSWIM?

Anybody else interested in the World Cup? Complete role reversal in our house...I love football & have watched all the matches thus far...DH hates footie with a passion & thinks I'm really sad!! For what it's worth thought England were pants yesterday!!!! :o

OP posts:
calvemjoe · 11/06/2006 17:49

Cori, my scar feels really tight, esp when i stand up after sitting for a long time. It's getting quite uncomfortable and I'm going to ask my midwife about it when I see her on thurs.

Coriander73 · 11/06/2006 19:06

Yep, mine too & also...sort of hot & sweaty at times too...sorry if TMI for those who haven't a clue what I'm on about!!

OP posts:
clairemow · 11/06/2006 19:11

Calvemjoe and Cori, good for you making the decision to go for a VBAC. I am chicken I'm afraid I think, but also have another scan at 34 weeks, so we'll see what they say about it all then. What I really really don't want is to try for a vbac, and end up with an emergency c-section in a panic anyway. This would be like a first labour for me (DS was breech so had c-section as soon as I went into labour with him) - and I'm scared about how long it would be, how long they'd actually let me push etc.

Cori, hope DD's eye gets better. The eating could be the heat, or perhaps because her eye hurts she just doesn't feel 100%?

We're going to light the bbq now, should be nice.

Oh yes, football - neither of us is really into it, although DH will watch if he's not doing anything else. He's a Scot, so not really an England fan anyway.

homemama · 11/06/2006 19:56

Ok, I'm sat in my pjs after a cool bath and it's lovely! The bathing however was more of a disaster as DH and I had bright (?!) idea that all three of us could bath together tonight. Anyway, DH got in with DS but when I got in, I displaced the water so much it ended up around poor Ds's ears and he was none too pleased. Blush Grin He started trying to shove me out the way and saying 'out, out' in a very stern manner.Grin As if to make me feel worse, when I did get out the water level dropped nicely and DS exclaimed, 'der!' (there)

For all you ladies considering a VBAC, I was talking to a friend who took that option and she said she was so happy that she did. First time around they had let her labour for 24hrs before taking her for an em cs. Her consultant wasn't keen on VBACs for her 2nd but she wanted to try anyway. In the end her 2nd labour was quick and straightforward. She said for her, the main benefit was the recovery as she was up and out the next day. It had taken her a while to recover from the cs and she didn't think she could face it again with a toddler to look after.

However, it may not be the right decision for everyone. I'm not trying to influence anyone as, like with BF, we've all got to make the decision that's best for us. Just thought you might be interested to hear about another mum's experience. Smile

I hope it's cooler tomorrow! Lol Marls, it's true what the Americans say that us Brits are obsessed with the weather! We whinge no matter what the temperature! Grin

appyday · 11/06/2006 21:12

Hi all, sounds like a lot of us are struggling with mobility, I'm getting extremely frustrated at the major upheaval of rolling over in bed let alone coping with toddlers and stairs/washing/dressing etc. My fingers look like chipolatas and my toes are as wide as long although these are my only swellings.
In reply to c-scars, mine feels fine if a little itchy occassionly, but I'm hoping for a VBAC this time as I don't want the complications I had with DD.
Cooler night's sleep to all tonight.

clairemow · 12/06/2006 09:37

That's really encouraging homemama. Still undecided here. My mum and DH have said they will be here full time between them for the first 6 weeks if I have a c-section, so I'm less worried about the recovery. Might be a good opportunity to stay in bed with the new baby while DS goes on lovely trips with Grandma...

puppy · 12/06/2006 10:05

Morning mum to bes' Smile

Thanks for the advice about spd, I have a consultants appointment on wednesday so will mention it then.

lol Coriander heres a pic of \link{http://www.thepinksugarmouse.com/SWBAYOMI\yorkshire mix} Grin

Mandaz, obviously I am a yorkshire lass too, from west yorks Smile

Pol26, I understand how you feel about giving up mindee, I have four but luckily the older ones I look after are term time only so I only have till july to work, not long left Smile, I do look after a one year old one day a week so its not that bad. Congratulations on your boy, glad your scan went well. Well done on doing the trampoline, we got ds one for xmas once and the elastic bit is hard enough to do without being pregnant.

Thanks for the well wishes spinamum, congratulations and luck with your pregnancy Smile

Well hope you all had a good night sleep, the only way i coped with the heat this weekend was to wear a nightie and have a fan on me, not much housework was done i can tell you lol.

mandaz · 12/06/2006 11:05

Arghhhh I'm melting! Grin

Really not dealing well with the heat. Am now totally addicted to Fab ice lollies. I had the fan on all night despite the noise and managed to sleep ok but am now back to being sticky and sooo tired.

Am also getting into the really annoying habit of contantly singing really annoying advert tunes! I'm putting it down to mild insanity caused by hormones (don't you just love having that excuse to throw into absolutely every conversation Wink)I woke up this morning singing the Frosties advert. It's driving me mad!

compo · 12/06/2006 11:27

Ooh mandaz - I love that Frosties advert but can't get the song out of my head either Grin
Dh, bless him, slept on the sofa the last 2 nights, so I managed to get some sleep. It seems a bit cooler today but I'm not venturing out anyway!!
Unfortunately I don't have a choice whether to have c-section or not as ds wasn't one. I know that the recovery is much worse etc but I do like the idea of having a planned one and it all being over in 30 minutes!!

Normsnockers · 12/06/2006 12:16

Am having a slight waver over whether to ask for another c-section.

The only thing that tempts me towards a VBAC is the potentially quick recovery time. However, I am 41, I'm having another boy plus DH and I have larger than average heads and ds1's head circumference was 39cm at birth so statistically the odds are stacked against me having an easy time. My local hospital is also shortstaffed for midwives.

What would mess things up is a long labour followed by a c-section as this seems to knock people sideways as far as recoveries are concerned. I kind of like the idea of knowing that with an elective I'd probably be driving after 3 weeks plus dh could plan his workload better with regards a week off for the birth and looking after ds1 whilst I recovered in hospital for a few days.

If I was told that I'd have experienced midwife one to one care throughout the whole labour thing I'd be even more tempted but dh would have to put all major work projects on hold for two weeks either side of the birth (potentially a month) as he couldn't plan to start anything and then just suddenly not be there for 48 hours. He'd then have a stressful crappy autumn trying to get back on track just when we have a newborn baby disturbing us lots in the night.
When we discussed this with the midwife/junior doctor in clinic before ds1 was born they eventually gave in and booked us a c-section but they were not impressed that our working lives had so much impact on deciding to "having the baby to order on a certain day".

DH is torn between knowing that a planned c-section would be easier to manage workwise for him but knowing that I'd be more incapacitated for about 3-6 weeks thereafter. I'm looking at what help I could get for that period to smooth things over. I really don't want MIL involved after our bust up in the spring and my mum can't help other than having ds to stay for a couple of days and making us some nice meals for the freezer.

I am going to have a couple of months mat leave and I don't want to waste 2-3 weeks of that time waiting for baby to arrive if we go for a VBAC.

I think I've talked myself into another c-section ! Now I just have to persuade the hospital and get over their snotty attitide about "babies to order to fit in with our diaries" I am of course to posh to push.
