Welcome to thread number 7 (of many) of the October bus xxx

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I am still doing my window shopping in my work cough break cough and I was wondering if anyone had any sense of time for how long a moses basket will be big enough for baby? I appreciate it changes depending on your baby's size, but would roughly 6 months be about right in your experiences?

Claphammama · 30/04/2013 11:32

Three months more like. And my DS was 6.8 when he was born so not big at all. Really not worth buying if you can borrow for 3 months from a friend. This is what my friends told me and really happy I didn't have to get it. Saying this, had to give it back as she had another baby!

Smitten1981 · 30/04/2013 11:43

I was having this dissussion yesterday with DH. Think we're not going to get a moses basket and buy a Stokke Sleepi mini for the bedroom, which looks about the same size as a moses anyway, but converts into a proper cot at 6 months, and then just put the baby in the pram carrycot while downstairs.

Smitten1981 · 30/04/2013 11:44

*discussion, I wish you could edit posts - grrr!

JellyCurls · 30/04/2013 11:53

roxvox 6 weeks ours were in Moses baskets as had long babies. Guess this might happen to you as we'll seeing as you are a tad tall. Go for a crib would be my advice, wish we had done that but not buying one for this baby as is last

roxvox · 30/04/2013 11:57

I wish you could edit posts too smitten! It is very frustrating...

I am not really interested in a moses basket itself either smitten, but one of those mini cots for the bedroom (I want to be able to see baby through the bars). However it seems to suggest that you just use moses basket bedding, so I assume they are the same size, hence the question!

Thanks for the advice claphammama and jellycurls, perhaps it isn't worth the extra money for the first 6 months (we would have a full size crib for the nursery as well, but it would be awkward to fit in our bedroom as we have a huge bed ourselves). DH is 6'6" and I am 6', so we keep joking about having a tall baby...

Unfortunately none of my friends/family have had babies in the last 12 years or so, so there is no chance of borrowing anything! Thanks for the advice all.

Soupqueen · 30/04/2013 12:00

wickedgirl, results could be tomorrow or Thursday. I'm feeling fine today, cramps have gone and have had no bleeding so, fingers crossed, the test itself hasn't caused any problems.

Thoughts with MoN

I've been having crazy, vivid dreams too and think its why I'm so tired. Thanks for the cat net heads up natalie, good price!

I've just been looking up the NCT nearly new sale and the next one in my area is 1st June, might hold off on buying anything big until I've had a look there.

roxvox · 30/04/2013 12:14

I may have been being nieve in my last post... Perhaps this is bigger than a moses basket as it doesn't offer a time frame, except to say 'Perfect for use from birth until your child can sit up or kneel' (although to be honest I have no idea at what age babies can sit up or kneel...)

whiteandyellowiris · 30/04/2013 12:14

are you all having the flu jab? i can't decide if i should get on eor not, im 14 weeks now, but we kinda have gone past the flu season really

what sre you all doing?

Warlin · 30/04/2013 12:15

rox thanks for the advice. I tried ringing the surgery to talk to the midwife but was given another number, where the receptionist acted totally confused as to why I'd be ringing there and gave me a third number...sigh. I just feel it is bloody difficult to get hold of anyone and will prob be told I'm over-reacting anyway :(

We got 9 weeks out of our moses basket. DS was 6lbs 13 when born so wasn't a big baby but he started hitting his hands off the sides and that would waken him. We moved him into his cotbed at 9 weeks and he slept so much better. I know others who have managed 12 weeks but I think anymore is unusual.

JellyCurls · 30/04/2013 12:18

roxvox my dc were 56cm and 57cm at birth so think realistically you could have a child that long. We are 5'11" and 6'4"

Soupqueen · 30/04/2013 12:22

iris, I'm not getting the flu jab just now but will get it at the start of autumn/flu season.

Smitten1981 · 30/04/2013 12:22

I'm really trying not to buy all the things that you're told that you should have, like a changing table and a moses and a load of other stuff that will probably be used for about a month then you have to get rid of. Otherwise we're going to end up spending a fortune.

I had enough of that when we were planning our wedding last year, half of the stuff that you supposedly must have was a complete waste of money.

roxvox · 30/04/2013 12:25

Warlin have you not been given a direct number for your midwife? Seems quite bad that, if something really bad happened, then you wouldn't be able to get hold of anyone easily. Sorry to hear your having problems getting through.

whiteandyellowiris I haven't had the jab, and it hasn't really been mentioned to me. I think I would have it if the midwife mentioned it. I've not had the flu before though (whether that means I am less or more susceptible to it I am not sure).

JellyCurls sounds as though you have a tall family! DH keeps commenting about how he's going to get a basketball hoop and try to encourage our children to get interested in the NBA Hmm

roxvox · 30/04/2013 12:30

smitten I am trying to do the same. Apparently if you go to Kiddicare they will give you a huge list of all the things you must have, but most of them are supposedly OTT. Perhaps it was because of this list that I recently read that first children cost approximately £10k in the first year! I am looking to get most of my stuff off of eBay, including this crib for the bedroom, which I have found on there for

Claphammama · 30/04/2013 12:30

smitten I disagree on the changing table. You use it for at least two years until you are done with potty training, it's safer and it really saves your back!

cuillereasoupe · 30/04/2013 12:31

We are 5'11" and 6'4"

Both 5'4" here, though DP claims 5'6" Hmm
My nipples are like bullets at the moment. Probably because it's bleeding freezing.

Claphammama · 30/04/2013 12:32

roxvox babies start to sit up when they are about 6 months

Smitten1981 · 30/04/2013 12:34

Clapham We've got a large chest of drawers from Ikea that are about changing table height, so I think I'll just shove a mat on there and use the drawers at the top for extra storage!

Claphammama · 30/04/2013 12:38

ah makes sense smitten. i remember some of my friends tried to change on bed or carpet and it didn't work!

roxvox · 30/04/2013 12:44

I also realise how naive I am in how to spell 'naive'... Apologies for the spelling; I am going to blame it on baby brain.

Thanks claphammama, sounds as though this crib might be a good idea then (not that I am buying anything yet!)

BowlFullofJelly · 30/04/2013 12:48

I managed without a changing table - I wanted one because they are pretty, but we didn't really have room so didn't bother, and I never missed one - just did it on floor or bed. Mind you, rarely used a changing mat either, maybe I'm just slovenly?

Don't buy a bloody nappy bin - complete waste of money. Thought it was really good for the first few weeks, then the cartridges ran out and so got some 16p for 100 nappy bags from Sainsburys, and realised how bloody pointless and expensive the nappy bin was - although the nappy sausages it produces are quite amusing!

TheFalconsmistress · 30/04/2013 12:56

Turned up at the hospital 40 mins early that will be fun. I am clad I have the consultant though I had a lump of greenish mucus on wiping hope its nowt to worry about sorry for tmi!

MotherOfNations · 30/04/2013 13:14

Hi everyone. I'm back, I thought it was best not to post when I was feeling panicky in the lead up to the amnio. I didn''t want to bring anyone down.
On my way back home now, all went well and I should have my initial results tomorrow or Thursday. I'm really thinking it's Turners as the consultant said the growth is on track and right for my dates and babies with the other conditions tend to be smaller.
The fluid is only visable behind the head now and not right down the spine like at my first scan so I suppose that's encouraging

Natalieand · 30/04/2013 13:22

Haha some of the things I lived without/didn't buy/wish I never bothered buying
Nappy bin - big fat waste of money
Changing table - didnt buy one and never thought 'aw if only I had a changing table'
Changing mat- good for the messy ones lol
Moses basket - I borrowed off my sister and dd used it for 8 weeks
Baby bath - deffo a waste of money
And clothes in new born size pretty much a waste of money specially for a October baby they r much cosier in baby grows until they can fit properly in real clothes like 0-3

Dd was 8.8lb if that makes any difference to any of those things lol

Gender scan tommorow i can hardly contain my excitement
