Marking place on new thread.

So sorry to hear your sad news kiwi.

Best of luck to Dreams for the scan tomorrow - I had a small breakthrough bleed at around 8 weeks last time around and it was just a bit of cervical erosion - I think it's quite common so fingers crossed for you.

riverflow I'm due on 27/10. What you said for me googling. This NHS page says it is usually cleared by 12-14 weeks.

www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/pages/morning-sickness-nausea.aspx

I always thought it would be gone by 12, but I guess it is common to last a bit longer? Fx it's gone for you for good.

MissTweed · 02/04/2013 20:34

Anyone else got their 12w scan on 15th April??

EcoHippyMum · 02/04/2013 20:35

I won't go into how many animals we have but I could open a petting zoo!

Anyone else had really achy back and little niggles in the tummy? I can't get comfortable!

firsttimemummyy · 02/04/2013 20:36

Hi all
I just wanted to share something my sister (who's a doctor) mentioned to me when I said I was thinking of an early scan to put my mind at ease, that I hadn't even thought of - the safety of having scans done. I'm definitely not trying to scare anyone here and I will certainly be going for my 12 week scan (can't wait!) but it seems that the situation with regards to ultrasound, especially in the first trimester, isn't just as simple as 'its definitely safe cause everyone has it done'. This article was linked to one of my baby apps on my iPhone and is reassuring, but it seems we should maybe consider that ultrasound is not 100% consequence free and be careful in these delicate first 12 weeks - particularly using dopplars www.babycentre.co.uk/a1014487/are-ultrasound-scans-safe

MotherOfCleo · 02/04/2013 20:37

yeah one I appreciate all that you say but with a puppy you get all of those at once from day one, also they do need to be let out around twice in the night to start with. Confused

I am hoping my bubba will poo/pee mainly in a nappy, stay where its put (at least for a few months) and not need me to take it out in the cold rain and snow to go 'wee wee'. They do say a puppy is good preparation for a baby, just hats off to surprise for wanting to do both at the same time. Grin

MotherOfCleo · 02/04/2013 20:39

honey he certainly sounds like a lot to deal with, he sounds like he has a fair amount of unresolved issues that he needs to deal with! Hmm

riverflow · 02/04/2013 20:40

Ah honey sorry to hear that, you know yourself what is the best thing for you and your kids. Hope it works out for you.

riverflow · 02/04/2013 20:53

Thanks firsttimemummy I actually just checked out the cost of early scans and emailed the Edinburgh Clinic a few moments ago, thinking that there were no consequences. I will now look into those consequences and decide if its worth any risk. I was so busy trying to make it all be okay after my last mc, that I hadn't thought of that! Thanks

OneLittleToddleTerror · 02/04/2013 20:55

motherofcleo I was being a bit tongue in cheek. I guess you would be able to tell us which is harder in 9 months! I suspect it very much depends on the baby. My DD is a good sleeper, but two of my friends have absolute terrors when it comes to bedtime. I told them about bedtime live on channel 4 because their toddlers could be on the show! Neither goes to bed until the parents do, and both wakes multiple times a night still. And they have stories of waking in the dead of night wanting to play.

I wonder if puppies have personalities as varied as babies.

I had a puppy when I was young but ofc my mum took care of it. My current cat was around 6 when we took her from the local rescue. I'm sure kittens and puppies are hard work.

BoyMeetsWorld · 02/04/2013 21:00

Wow first time that's a really valid point.

Can anyone summarise the level of risk? (I'm meant to be working on my post grad course, not googling! Naughty)

berrybomb · 02/04/2013 21:06

Saundy - that article made me laugh. Showed my DP, he has kindly offered to let me give that a try, how generous.

Purple - I'm so sorry, hugs

Honey - what an @rse. Hope you can cross him off the list of things to worry about!

Just checking in to the new thread and catching up! I got my scan letter through - 22nd April. I also told my boss today, because I had 2 days off last week when I went panicky about the bleed and had the scan. She was very supportive and really excited, so that is a massive weight off my shoulders!

Symptoms wise not a lot today, just tired after being back at work

firsttimemummyy · 02/04/2013 21:13

This article is not a good one to read (it's the one that scared me into listening to my sister and not booking an early scan!) - www.midwiferytoday.com/articles/ultrasoundrodgers.asp
It is a bit scientific and relates to autism at the start but if you scroll down there are sections on general risk.
Interestingly I couldn't find any scientific proof that they are safe, just the fact that everyone has them done and there are no obvious birth problems.
But an autistic child comes out 100% healthy and you only discover the problems years later,so would that be picked up?
As I said I really don't want to worry people as I know scans are often a medical necessity, I just wanted to pass on the info that my sister flagged to me just in case it helped someone make a more informed decision

firsttimemummyy · 02/04/2013 21:15

Sorry i think the link was too long to fit!
here it is broken up so it fits on the page-

thanks mother and one for the tips on puppies, i am wavering! my friend at worl has a lovely working spaniel bitch and is having her mated (we can take dogs to work). before i knew I was pregnant shd told me about mating her and I enthusiastically said yes please to one of the pups. Now I am seriously concerned but people keep telling me it will work. eep. at least I can take it to work - when i am back at work the dog and I will be dropping the poor baby at childcare and going off together.

BoyMeetsWorld · 02/04/2013 21:26

Wow you can take dogs to work? I didn't know anywhere did that! Are you in an office? My dog would LOVE if I could take him. Well, maybe. Actually he'd probably drool on everything then sulk at lack of walkies.

stuffthenonsense · 02/04/2013 21:26

Firsttimemummy if you are on fb there is a group I'm a member of, called Doppler Danger where you can get lots of articles about the risks of both Doppler and ultrasound. Essentially they should really only be used for if there is reason to believe there could be a problem. I think the risks of maternal anxiety eg past mc/current bleeding can quite probably justify a quick check to confirm all is well, but certainly the longer ones, 4D and ones where you're given a DVD are pretty risky.

harverina · 02/04/2013 21:27

Purplekiwi, I am so sorry for your loss, what awful news. Best wishes for the future. Hope that you are ok.

I have lots to catch up on and working on uni work tonight so will catch up a bit later.

Someone asked about bag pain and niggles in tummy - yes! My back has been pretty sore and have had lots of little pains on and off in my tummy, including stitch like pains.

Someone else (sorry sorry I am being rubbish tonight - feel like I need a pen and paper to write down notes as I read!) also asked about struggling with socialising? Well I just dont want to do it!! I want to hibernate! The thought of being with drunk people when I am sober also does not appeal to me :) I need to remind myself to make an effort with friends this time. I was terrible last time.

Ok have to go now, but will read later when I am finished uni work :( its horrible having to sit here and do work when I have been at work all day grrrr.

harverina · 02/04/2013 21:30

Oh and I had no idea that there were risks associated with ultra sounds! I dont think that any health professional has ever told me that which is appalling!!

suprisepitstop · 02/04/2013 21:34

boy yes its an office, quite a few are starting to let you take dogs. there are usually quite a few cruising around the floor which is nice, a furry cuddle is a lovely stress relief!

BoyMeetsWorld · 02/04/2013 21:46

Omg - to both dogs in offices and ultrasounds!

Wish mine was a dog friendly office, how amazing!

Stuff - are the 4D ones risky even in later pregnancy? I'd so had my heart set on one if I make it that far but now feeling worried about it - would never forgive myself If I had one then something happened Hmm

Lucky13ForBaby · 02/04/2013 21:57

:( having an early scan 2mor due to previous miscarriages am now petrified of it causing another :(

MummaPanda · 02/04/2013 21:58

suprise that is awesome! I'd love to work somewhere like that! Its such a good idea!

firsttimemummyy · 02/04/2013 22:01

stuff thanks for the fb group info, I will have a look at it!
Interestingly my mum was saying that when she was pregnant with me (nearly 30 years ago) you never had a 12 week scan, you just had a blood test to assess the risk of downs - the first and only scan she had was at 5 months.
I have to say it makes sense to me that heating up and vibrating the baby by ultrasound even if just a small amount cannot be good, especially now when its so tiny it will get a full blast and all the organs are forming etc. Plus was quite disturbed by the fact that when a microphone was put in the uterus it sounds like the noise of a subway train coming into a station! No wonder the poor babies try to wriggle away from it!
