Soup, I'm so sorry that you had that news but I hope it turns out to be nothing.

I was hoping for a heartbeat at my 12 week scan, too. At out private scan at 9 weeks we heard a heartbeat. I may end up asking questions because I would not be satisfied with just a quick peek and a "baby's ok." (We opted out of Down syndrome screening.)

roofio87 · 11/04/2013 18:17

I didn't hear the hb at scan but could see it flashing away!!

Natalieand · 11/04/2013 18:21

I didn't hear a heart beat at NHS 12 weeks scan, she was showing me baby and it wasn't really moving to begin with so I said 'I take it its alive?' --sounds rediculous thinking back but I wanted to be clear at the time lol' and she said yehp there's the heart and zoomed in on it beating but didn't let us hear it xxx

ananikifo · 11/04/2013 18:26

Hmmm in the private scan she seems to press a button or something, and then we could hear the heartbeat (picture of baby still on the screen) and you could see a readout of it in the bottom of the screen. It's not like it took extra time or a different machine.

In my googling afterwards it seemed in some places (the US?) they tell you heart rate and then there are risk levels based on heart rates. I was a bit annoyed she didn't tell me the hr as I'm sure she could have just read it off the screen.

Livened · 11/04/2013 18:41

Private 8 week scan we heard the heartbeat, but not listened to at the nhs 12 weeker. Just got to see the bean dancing around which was lovely.

As I've said before, I have a Doppler from my first pregnancy, and I've found it's heartbeat every time so far since 12 weeks. Very reassuring and makes it feel real too (I'm losing weight not gaining and obviously no movements felt yet) but then again I had a tiny bump last time and my DS was a healthy 7lbs 7 so I shouldn't have worried really ;-)

funkky · 11/04/2013 19:14

Sorry to hear soup and sending you positive thoughts!

NHS scan here and at 12 week scan, lady turned on some speaker thingy and baby's heartbeat filled the room. Heartbeat rate was also written down on form now in my notes, been quite lucky as clueless first time mum but seems bookings and everything around here ( sutton) is almost automatic except ante natal booking where no one picks the phone

Smitten1981 · 11/04/2013 19:19

Wicked - I'm hoping that it might have been slightly bigger cause the baby wasn't quite 12 weeks.

I really wanted it to be a 1.something measurement though or in the early 2's.

juniper9 · 11/04/2013 19:26

I heard the heart beat at my private scan at 7+1 and then at the 12 week scan too. I think it really must depend on the hospital or the sonographer.

Sorry to hear about your stressful results, Soup. Hope the cvs gives you some positive news.

Iheartcrunchiebars · 11/04/2013 19:28

Just come back from a brilliant scan and I'm over the moon. Saw the heartbeat and the brain really clearly and the midwife explain everything. Have fallen completely in love!

Shootingstarsandcomets · 11/04/2013 19:39

soup sorry that you've had worrying news, hope it turns out to be nothing.
Yay for a great scan crunchie! It's so amazing seeing them in there isn't it.
We didnt hear a heartbeat at 12 week scan either. I had millions of scans with ds as we were complicated and they used to let me listen to his heartbeat at those scans and see the blood moving through the umbilical cord, I loved it. He turned out fine by the way, sometimes there is lots of worry but a great end result Smile. Although I'm really hoping to be trouble free this time.

Wickedgirl · 11/04/2013 19:40

Smitten....... I was 13+2 when I had my unchallenged scan and got the 2.9 measurement. Sad

Wickedgirl · 11/04/2013 19:40

Bloody auto correct

Not unchallenged scan........nuchal scan

Smitten1981 · 11/04/2013 19:52

I'm just hoping no news is good news Wicked.

I'm trying to get used to worrying as in sure they'll always be something to fret about until they arrive and then after of course Wink

moonblues · 11/04/2013 20:21

Thanks MoN. How are you feeling today?

OrangeBlossom2 · 11/04/2013 21:46

Can I have your opinions on something?

I've just been invited on a free holiday in the French Alps in mid August with friends whose parents own a chalet company (sounds super posh doesn't it!) when I will be about 30 weeks pregnant. We would ferry rather than fly so that shouldn't be a problem. Do you think it is a crazy idea that far on? Hopefully early enough that I am not at risk of popping out a sprog in France. I would not be able to do hot tub, horse riding, cycling etc but could do walking waddling, BBQs and well sun creamed up enjoying the sunshine and being outdoors. DH very keen and the idea of not having to spend any money except ferry and food is appealing at the moment. But do you think I will just be too big and blobby to enjoy it and be safe?

Hmm...

Umlauf · 11/04/2013 21:50

I'd go but only if you can get travel insurance. You might find it hard so late. Also research nearest hospitals.

Natalieand · 11/04/2013 22:00

I agree with above post I would go providing u can get relevant insurance and if you are beginning to bloom look like mr blobby then u will have the perfect excuse to put your feet up all week and be waited on hand and foot lol

char1eston · 11/04/2013 22:12

I would definitely go. Am flying at 28 weeks to France and easy jet say you can travel with them until 34 weeks! Free holiday - yay!

pinksky · 11/04/2013 22:26

Soup sorry to hear you're having to have a CVS. I am sure it will be reassuring but horrid to have to go through it. You are sensible to focus on those good odds. Take care of yourself and take it easy with moving.

Orangeblossom I'll be in france a few times and my plan is to just use my ehic card and not get insurance. Just my choice because I think getting insurance will be a pain.

Shootingstarsandcomets · 11/04/2013 22:52

Oh yes I'd go it sounds lovely. Definitely have insurance and know where the hospitals are just in case. At 30 weeks you'll probably be quite big but not so big you can't enjoy a nice walk and lovely fresh air.

TheCatIsUpTheDuff · 11/04/2013 22:56

Delurking to urge you to get insurance. Did you hear about the British lady who went to Spain without insurance and had her baby early - the baby has that condition where parts of its gut are on the outside of its body, but without insurance she can't afford to have herself and baby flown home by air ambulance, so they're stuck in Spain until the baby's well enough to fly by ordinary plane.

I'm 12w5d, EDD 19th October, 1st baby, btw. Had scan on Tuesday, NT 1.4mm, still waiting on blood results. DH could see the baby's heartbeat when the sonographer pointed it out, but I couldn't make it out.

PseudoBadger · 11/04/2013 22:57

I heard that on Radio 4 today TheCat, on You and Yours.

Tarlia · 11/04/2013 23:04

Def a yes to an almost free holiday at 30 weeks so long as you expect to be low risk! Enjoy!

char you can only fly with Easyjet after 27 weeks with a doctors letter stating you are not high risk, unless they have changed it in the last 2 years.

Congrats to the scanned ladies today!

No heartbeat heard at scan here, I asked if she could see HB rate, she said no, though not sure I believe her, but said its always fast at 'this early stage'. But I wanted to hear, sob. The dr tried to find it last week, but couldn't, though not worried as was still 14 weeks and bloated! My bp was sky high and was getting migraines, blurred vision and dizzy spells though back in the 70's now thank god.

I hope I didn't offend anyone earlier, I was trying to be kind, but feel I put a big foot in it :(.

Claphammama · 11/04/2013 23:07

Orange Blossom - I'm also going on holidays in August and will be almost 30 weeks by the time of our return flight. I think it's perfectly safe on short-haul flights if everything is OK with pregnancy. However, I know that you should avoid high altitudes at any time of your pregnancy. (unless one is born and raised in Nepal or Peru I guess...?) So check how high up in the French Alps this place is.

When I was pregnant with DS I was actually in India in my first trimester (long story...) and we went to a lovely hill station for a couple of days. The hill station was 2,400 meters over the sea level and I felt really sick the whole time. I had no idea why but was enlightened much later. Apparently it's quite dangerous so stay low!

To all the girls worrying about their results - big hug and focus on the positives! NHS always prefer to scare and be negative to be on the safe side...

pinksky · 11/04/2013 23:19

HiCat, congratulations on your scan! Poor woman, i hope they make it home soon, maybe they've received some donations since getting some publicity. As I said no insurance is just my personal choice. In the massively unlikely event we needed to get home via air ambulance I'm sure we'd work it out, but the most important thing (for me) as it's more likely is just getting health care, which the ehic covers to a great extent. I'll do some more digging re what is available for free and see how much insurance is but I have read that it's really difficult to get any past 28 weeks. Orange, if you get any quotes maybe you could say roughly how much?
