takingthestairs, not at all. I think if we can't have the reassurance on the NHS and we have the money then you're right, we might as well. I've even wondered to myself if I'm being ridiculous in paying for the Harmony Test even after my experience as I could just be patient and find out not that much later anyway. Sometimes we just need to do what we need to do to relax and enjoy as much of our pregnancies as possible though. It'd be a shame if I was having a healthy baby to not enjoy 50% of the pregnancy because of my past experience. At least if I know I can tick off chromosomal abnormalities as early on as possible then hopefully I'll be able to enjoy the build up to the anomaly scan a bit more rather than being stressed.

Can I be added to the list Readyornot2011? My EDD is 21st December, baby #2.

My hair gets oily quickly anyway but it is currently worse, as is my skin. I used Palmers bump butter with Poppy but I didn't get beyond 22 weeks so I don't know how good it would've been beyond that. It helped with my existing stretch marks on my hips though so going to use it this time. Haven't started a proper routine yet though.

Michellephant · 23/04/2013 13:06

ccsays that is early, did they say why they wanted to do it so soon? They wouldn't accurately date a pregnancy at that gestation so you'd end up having to have another scan at 10-12 weeks.

b0nker5Mum · 23/04/2013 13:22

Cc, my doc ignored me when I said I had long cycles and am not as far gone as she believed... Then again when I went for the scan on sat I told the sonographer my lmp date and that I know when I'm due from my ov date... She still told me that I'm not as far along as I think which in actual fact I was a day ahead of what I thought!!!

I think sometimes the professionals don't believe we could possibly know our own bodies!!!

A friend of mine was induced with her first even tho she told them it was too early and ended up with complications which ended up with a c section and subsequent births have all been c/s... She told me to lie about the dates!!

Oooops sorry for duplication!!!

Michellephant · 23/04/2013 13:38

I know when I ovulated yet whenever I have spoken to any health professionals they ask me my LMP which puts my dates 4 days out (I ov'd on CD18 of a 33 day cycle. I used OPKs and I felt ovulation this cycle)

No doubt I'll have similar problems as you ladies when I do eventually see a midwife or whatever. I've not yet bothered to see anyone as it still feels too early (I'm 5 weeks and 3 days)

ccsays · 23/04/2013 13:49

They didn't give a particular reason Michellephant, but I don't think they're taking my word for it and so are assuming I'll be two weeks further along than I am. Even taking that into account it seems a bit early though.

b0nker5Mum yes, it is a bit annoying that they don't think I know what I'm talking about Envy I did explain that I've always had six week cycles, but they're sticking to the standard 28 days until I get scanned.

lisbapalea · 23/04/2013 14:05

I think I am with you guys on the greasy hair - a real pain in the arse to have to wash it every day when you're used to every other day!

I was supposed to have a GP appt today but I check with the receptionist and she said I didn't need the GP referral and just needed to fill in a form, which I have now done, and apparently I will hear back from them in 2 weeks to arrange the booking in appointment.

I think I am 5+3 today. Time is just crawling at the moment isn't it!?

Vixjane · 23/04/2013 14:30

Been away since Friday and it feels like a lifetime since I caught up on this thread. Will try and keep up from now on!

So sorry to those who have received bad news recently.

Quiet hope you?re feeling better now that you?ve got meds and glad you didn?t have to stay in hospital long.

I?ve got my booking in appt with the midwife on Friday so a bit anxious about it but it?s another milestone!

Yesterday and today I?ve been feeling like I?m constantly moving even though I?m sat down! Anyone else had anything like this?

TakingTheStairs · 23/04/2013 14:40

QueenofWhispers
As far as I know, the harmony is the only other additional test available in addition to the standard nuchual scans and other tests/scans.
I'm seeing my Consultant tmr though, so I'll ask her then.

Hello all, had my private scan at FMC this morning and it went well Grin Baby measured 7+5, which is more or less tying in with EDD. It was great to hear the heartbeat... it's all becoming real now! They offered us the harmony test for free if we pay for nuchal scan so we've decided to go for it because of my age. If anyone else is interested you need to get the blood test done at 10-11 weeks to get it free at FMC, outside of that timeframe it's an eye-watering £450. You still must pay £180 for the nuchal scan though. Here is the website if anyone is interested, sorry I haven't a clue how to do links www.fetalmedicine.com/fmc/contact/

Michellephant · 23/04/2013 16:03

I was told by FMC that Harmony was £400 after 10 weeks with £180 for the scan, totaling £580.

lisbapalea · 23/04/2013 16:20

Ah, great news gooseygirl - very envious of your scan, and hearing the heartbeat must have been lovely!

I am stressing a bit (again). I have to travel abroad tomorrow for week, which in itself is scaring me a bit - can someone reassure me that flying is OK at 5 weeks?

Also, while I am away we have a dinner out with clients - has anyone got any good tips for disguising the fact that I won't be drinking alcohol, bearing in mind the dinner is likely to be quite boozy, and is really the sole redeeming feature of the trip for most of the people going - for me there is no single redeeming feature! Have been mulling over various excuses but they sound totally transparent to me!

Lastly, and more trivially, does anyone know if/when it's OK to have highlights when pregnant? I know massages are OK from 12weeks, as long as they're specifically designed for pregnant women, so I wondered if highlights were the same, on the basis of absorbing stuff into your body? Mum and I are trying to plan a pamper day but we're trying to work out what will be the best timing!

TakingTheStairs · 23/04/2013 16:43

lisba
Flying is fine at 5 weeks
Highlights are fine. The only thing is that your skin might have different sensitivity, so you might have a reaction to the dye that you haven't before. Maybe call the hairdresser and arrange a patch test for a few days before hand.

Hi all sorry for going AWOL have been on holiday, if anyone remembers me! Had a scan this morning am 6+2 and saw and heard the hb :)

kyz1981 · 23/04/2013 16:51

Lisapalea -Flying is fine at 5 weeks.

Could you say you are on antibiotics or something, most people know that you should not drink when on Anti -B's so should not be too much of an issue.

Highlights are fine, there was a debate about hair dye don't know how much of this was scare mongering - but highlights (well mine don't tend to come in to contact with the scalp - so there is no risk) - I however am waiting until I am 14 weeks as I cannot stand the smell of most things and my nausea is terrible atm - you may find this hits you in the next week or two- also something to note is sometimes colour does not take as well when your pg- the hormones do really odd things to your hair- mine was blonde before my 2 previous pregnancy's now its much thicker and darker.

FoxyRoxy · 23/04/2013 16:51

lisba have just flown to the uk and back from Spain, flying is fine. Although you may want to get some sea bands as I felt quite sick at times!

lisbapalea · 23/04/2013 16:55

Ah, thanks all - I feel better about getting on a plane now (I was having a Mr T moment for a while....).

I can't believe how much stuff I have forgotten since I was pg with DD - she is now 3 and clearly those years have erased my memory of everything pregnancy related!

Think I will wait until 12wks+ for any highlights; the roots will just have to be on show for a while!

I always see through the antibiotics excuse when people use that for not-drinking, but to be honest if people do realise that I am making it up and guess that I am pg, then hopefully they'll be sensitive enough not to ask any further!

Great news Foxy - hearing about these early heartbeats is so exciting!

FoxyRoxy · 23/04/2013 18:25

I flew in early pregnancy with ds1 and at about 15 weeks and 16 weeks with ds2 as well :)

I colour my hair at home but highlights don't actually touch your scalp do they, if you tell your hairdresser you're pregnant they will probably do a strand test and patch test on you.

I reckon I could use that excuse this time as ds2 is only 7mo so no one is expecting me to be pregnant! I said I had cystitis last time, not as obvious as ab's and you don't have to invent an illness ;)

ChocolateCremeEggBag · 23/04/2013 18:43

I flew at 22 and 24 weeks while pg with DS. This time will have to fly at 30-31 weeks as supposed to go to Majorca for FIL's 60th. Will just need a doctors letter that I'm ok to go ( and if not I get a week without DP and DS which may be just as nice Grin )

Lisba, say you're on metronidazole for a kidney infection, that makes you horrendously, violently ill if you drink!

babyiwantabump · 23/04/2013 21:08

Hey all - just checking in. Had a scan today as I was getting some pain on my right side and I was concerned as I know I have a cyst on thy side . All is well and I am 6+4 which is exactly what I thought I was - cyst has got larger though . Was 1.2 by 0.8 cm 3 weeks ago now measuring 6.4 by 6.8 cm which explains the pain! I thought that was it as I know that they can get larger in pregnancy . Doc has said it will probably get smaller after 12 weeks as that is when the corpus luteum stops maintaining the pregnancy .
The doc was also a bit shocked that that was the ovary is ovulated from as they said you usually don't ovulate with cysts !!

Hope all is well with everyone !

violetbean · 23/04/2013 21:51

Hi all,

So happy for those who had heartbeats, must be amazing! I have a question: should I be contacting someone to book my 12 week scan (on NHS), our will my GP practice be sorting this out? My first midwife appt isn't until about 10 weeks so if they arrange it after that won't it be too short notice?

Threw up in a co-op plastic bag this morning on the bus. Not my finest moment. Sorry if TMI!

So good to have online group to interact with. Thanks all.
