It is planned to be available on the NHS by 2017. Hopefully that will be the case. Research on it isn't complete yet so that's probably why it isn't planned to be available any time soon. I also think that is why it is free at 10 weeks at the FMC, so they can include you in their studies. I may be wrong though.

TakingTheStairs · 22/04/2013 17:28

I'm lucky in that my health insurance covers everything maternity, so I don't have to worry about the cost. No way on earth would I be happy spending hundreds on a blood test otherwise, especially if my risk isn't very high. I'm just having it for reassurance. (greedy I know, but if my insurance covers it, I don't see why not!)

What is a harmony test? I've never heard of one

TakingTheStairs · 22/04/2013 18:37

Basically inky it's a blood test that can identify the baby's DNA in the mothers blood and so can check for Down's, Edwards and Patau syndromes without having to do the nuchual scan. It was invented by the same guy that invented the nuchual scan (as far as I know). It's done at about 10 wks.

Thankyou taking all these things you learn. Im not having an early scan as I cannot afford it (i live in the north west and the cheapest I've found them for is £100) ill have to wait till June for mine :-( took a photo side on today and there is a definite bump! I'm gonna be huge

readyornot2011 · 22/04/2013 18:59

Quite an afternoon here. Started bleeding, bright red, not loads but enough to convince me it was game over.Thankfully DH was here and called doc who told us to go straight to the hospital. The hospital saw me straight away and despite nobody speaking English we managed fine with my appalling French. So had an unexpected early scan and thankfully all seems well, great to hear a heartbeat. Was home again, reassured, within 2 hours of the bleed starting.

So very pleased to see the French system works so well and feel better now that I know where my local maternity unit is and have visited it. Bleeding seems to have stopped now but wanted to post to reassure anyone who goes through the same thing, although fingers crossed no one will.

One question, I spoke to the dr when I got back and she asked what my blood type is, which stupidly I can't remember. Apparently if its negative I need to have an injection within 3 days of the bleed??? I'm going to get my blood tested in the morning to find out. Has anyone heard of this or is it a French thing?

readyornot2011 · 22/04/2013 19:08

Michelle sorry to hear what a tough time you have had. If it reassures you at all with my DD I was given a chance of 1 in 6 and I was only 29 at the time. We had a CVS and everything was fine. Not an experience I'd like to repeat though, we won't be telling a soul until we get past that part of the pregnancy. I can't imagine what you must have gone through, hugs.

2beornot · 22/04/2013 19:40

Hi Johnny. My dd was 2 in Jan as well. And although I'm going by lmp, I think I actually ov 2 days earlier so could be EDD Christmas Day too!!

I've added us both on (just realised I hadn't find it yet!!)

Thanks bonkers and harry. £50 seems a right bargain, where are you having it done? what can you actually find out from an early scan? i'm feeling a bit overwhelmed with info at this point.

I'm a size 4 shoe. Mum's 3.... well no point worrying about it now so i won't!

Does anyone else get little twinges in their tummy? it's where i would normally get a period pain, right in the middle quite low down. i wouldn't even call it a twinge really, more just a sensation. like if a period pain is 10 out of 10, this is like 1 or 2.

readyornot2011 · 22/04/2013 20:29

I've added myself and a few more to the list but couldn't make the hash key work I'm afraid.

michelle I hope me saying I was getting the harmony test because I might as well didn't come across as insensitive to everything you've been through. I didn't mean it like that and hope I didn't upset you x

Evening all, twinges are your uterus starting to stretch - so are a good sign.

It's not worth having an early scan before 7 weeks as you may not ge to see heartbeat before then (ESP if you are a couple of days out) I'm paying for one at about 8-9 weeks (assuming I get that far) as had a MMC before dec and we are on hols in France when I'm 10-11 weeks so want to be as sure as I can everything is ok.
Ready - good to hear French medical system is efficient! I'll be staying with MIL and GPIL's so will use their local doctor if I had to.

MildredH · 22/04/2013 23:21

So I had my scan last week at 7 wks exactly. I'm thinking about paying for another around 9-9.5 wks as an interim to 12 weeks..

I know it might seem mad but I've had a MMC at 10 wks before and heard of a work colleague having mc at 12 wks last wk.. It's heartbreaking anytime but to get to what you think is "safe" territory and lose the pregnancy must be awful..

Our local place does them for 65 pounds..

musiceverywhere · 22/04/2013 23:28

Why oh why did I cancel GP appointment tomorrow? Just started with pink spotting again Hmm -thought I was getting more relaxed, but now so anxious again. Hate nighttime when there's no distractions (in my house anyway) and head too busy thinking to get to sleep.

featherbag · 23/04/2013 08:00

I got a call from my MW last night, apparently she'd been going through her caseload for the week, saw I had a new patient appointment tomorrow and that I'd also had a scan last week, and wanted to call to introduce herself and check I was ok! I already like her better than the one I had last time and I haven't even met her yet!

Am shattered this morning, been up and down with DS who's taken to lying shouting if he wakes until someone comes to get him. If you shush-shush then leave the shouting gets louder! The last time I got up, 4am, I noticed some brown discharge. Even though I KNOW it's old blood and nothing to worry about, that was it for sleep. How's everyone else today?

featherbag · 23/04/2013 08:04

Ooh, meant to ask, anyone had the Mothercare Extreme travel system? I walk for MILES pushing the pushchair, and have gone through 3 in 18 months, including a Graco and a Silver Cross. Saw this one yesterday and it's half price at £200 at the minute, looks ideal but don't they always before you buy them?! Another plus is that the car seat goes up to 13kg, so by the time bean is too big for it DS will be big enough for the upright toddler one we've got and bean can move into the one he's in now. The infant one we've got from DS only goes up to 9kg, and having another one would mean my parents could hang into that one.

QueenofWhispers · 23/04/2013 10:13

Feather

do you see this pram when you go out often? Or did you just see it at MC and are considering it?

DS decided to 'surf' on the seat of his stroller which ended when the seat snapped off the chassis never to be reconciled to it's former glory... so I will have to invest in a new one. What makes things worse though, is every time DS see's the broken stroller he wants to fix it. Now it is franken buggy. There is tape, glue, bits of fabric and random string attached to the seat in every which way.

I think we may get a repeat version of our first stroller, but I dont think our DS would be happy to see another child in it. DS still tries to take babes out of identical prams and climbs in telling us 'it's my buggy'.

I do have a few questions:

I like the idea of the harmony test; is anyone aware of any other prenatal (antenatal) tests available? (I don't mind private careI'd like to see what all my options aremy GP is an idiot).
featherbag · 23/04/2013 10:17

I've seen a few, only spoken to 1 mum using it though, and while she sang its praises I'd like more opinions before I make a decision, £200 is still a lot of money to us!

inkymomma · 23/04/2013 10:27

I saw it too featherbag and was very impressed with how it looks but not seen anyone with one. We had a silvercross for number one and just want something different for this one

Holly1977 · 23/04/2013 11:10

Thanks ChocolateCremeEggBag, that's good to know. I've gone up a jean size already and my bras don't feel right either.Thankfully I kept my old bigger jeans and bras so am ok for now. I read something somewhere about not wearing underwire bras and getting special maternity ones. That's just for later right?

This is baby #1 for me, at the grand old age of 35! It's great to have other people to talk to / obsess over symptoms with!

I'm moisturising all over every day in the hopes of preventing / minimising stretch marks. My fella was saying I should use oil but as I have a ridiculous collection of body lotions that I never seem to get through, I thought this is a perfect time to start using them all up. Thoughts from people who've been here before?

Has anyone else got really greasy hair? I noticed this before I did the bfp and couldn't work out what was going on! Had to start washing my hair daily. But happy hormones are still pumping and I haven't had a major crying jag for 2 days now! :-)

Holly1977 · 23/04/2013 11:12

Sorry, also meant to say. I work as a counsellor and have recently started learning about mindfulness. It's helped me sleep much better and is helping me not obsess or get too anxious about stuff. Happy to share info if anyone's interested.

featherbag · 23/04/2013 11:19

Holly I used Bio-oil last time, twice daily from about 10-12 weeks, and got not a single stretch mark. I'm prone to them too, rest of body is covered in them from weight gain/loss over the years.

2beornot · 23/04/2013 11:50

Hi ladies!

Much like my first pregnancy, I have none of the normal symptoms (nausea etc) but am only 4+4 today so they may still arrive. I know that those of you who are really ill will think I'm nuts, but the odd sickness here and there is reassuring!!

Holly now you mention it, my hair is also greasy. I normally wash it every other day, but may need to do it daily which is a faff! I didn't realise it was a pregnancy thing!!

Harry I had a 4d scan with dd1. It wasn't cheap and it told us nothing extra but I enjoyed it and hope to do it again with this one. I did it at 28 wks last time but I think 24 might be best!

ccsays · 23/04/2013 12:59

Just had my first midwife appointment, cried when I got my bloods taken like a wuss. They've booked my first scan for when I'm just over seven weeks. Seems a bit early, no? Also they don't seem to be taking my word for it that I have very long cycles and was using ovulation tests, so I know when I conceived Envy
