Will this one take us through to the end of the first trimester? Will the sickness ever end? Will we be able to judge genders from those first scan pictures? These and many other mysteries to be solved in... THREAD 4

congratulations Smile

Congrats, legallyblond!

About ultrasounds:
My private scan at 9 weeks advised to drink 0.5 L, one hour before the scan. For the NHS scan it said to eat and drink normally but don't go the bathroom for one hour before. I imagine it becomes less important as the uterus expands, since the point is to push the uterus up and make it more easy to see. I wonder if countries that don't advise about full bladders schedule scans for later in pregnancy? Or offer you a transvaginal scan if the transabdominal one doesn't work?

We were told DH's manager's wife couldn't have an early scan because her bladder wasn't full enough, so we made sure I drank at least twice the recommendation. I was still trying to force down tea when they called us into the ultrasound room. One of the first things the sonographer asked me was whether I wanted an internal scan if they couldn't find my uterus. So in other words they would have made sure they found the uterus no matter what! Her first comment on the scan was about how full my bladder looked! Blush

SeriousStuff · 19/03/2013 19:51

Natalieand I had 2 early scans because I was worried about an ectopic. 1st scan, they put me back 5 days, second scan 1 day, then today, 2 days...It is a bit disheartening as time goes slowly enough as it is, I'm just so surprised that I ovulated so late!

legallyblond OMG! That's amazing news!

Have not come off text/skype/phone since we started telling people - it's pretty draining in itself!

OrangeBlossom2 · 19/03/2013 19:52

Wow exciting news legally blond!

Littleducks sorry I have no advice but sorry you are feeling abandoned, I hope you get someone to sort it out for you soon and you feel better.

Parents evening wasn't too bad today, although very tired and now off out to Pilates as it might be my last one ever I don't want to miss it. Hopefully I istay awake! I missed last weeks feeling too sick and tired.

slippysnow · 19/03/2013 19:54

legally are you going to tell people or do people already know?

JellyCurls · 19/03/2013 20:15

Oh legally bet that's a bit of a shock but might explain the morning sickness

Haylebop12 · 19/03/2013 20:25

little they should give you anti sickness through IV. Then as you begin eating and drinking you will take it orally.

legally wow, how exciting!!!

MotherOfNations · 19/03/2013 20:25

Lovely news legally. I don't know how I'd cope with twins as I already have 4 dc that drive me crazy. They do run in the family and there haven't been a set for a while so maybe I should prepare myself.

Bronzemoth · 19/03/2013 20:45

Congratulations legally- a lot too take in I'm sure! I had another scan today it's amazing to see the changes in just 6 days from 9+5 to 10+4. Arms and legs so much clearer and waving around all over the place!

tuckingfits · 19/03/2013 20:53

Congratulations legally!! Wowzers!

cherrycherry41 · 19/03/2013 21:00

Massive congrats legally!
Did you have any idea you were carrying twins or was it a total surprise? :)

JethroTull · 19/03/2013 21:27

Wow Legally that's great news! At least you will have plenty of time to feel prepared.Grin

HotSoupDumpling · 19/03/2013 21:29

Woooahh, brilliant news legally!

Sanjifair · 19/03/2013 21:42

Congrats legally!!!

Natalieand · 19/03/2013 21:50

Amazing news legally I bet u r over the moon! I wonder how many more sets of twins our thread will have. Xxx

legallyblond · 19/03/2013 21:54

Thanks everyone. We had absolutely no idea at all, which is apparently rare! No twins at all in either family, no ivf or fertility drugs and I'm hardly showing! If you recall, the whole pregnancy was a (very wonderful) unplanned surprise, so needless to say we are reeling a bit!!!!

As I said, it looks like they're non identical. Apparently, for twins, this is the lower risk kind (two sacs, two placentas), which is comforting to know.
In the scan, the sonographer had to spend literally 15 mins convincing us she was being serious as it was such a shock!!!

Very excited, but a bit nervous as I'm obviously now much higher risk. Also, I feel pretty confident looking after 1 - breast feeding was great (I bf DD totally then carried on until she was 2!!! Blush), I had her in the sling most of the time and generally found motherhood easier than expected and great.... Now feel like I am heading totally into the unknown, which was not at all what I was expecting... Can I do all of the above with two (breastfeeding etc)???????

But, as far as "shocks" go in a scan, def one you'd want! Both look v healthy, but still waiting for bloods for downs risk.

legallyblond · 19/03/2013 22:00

And yes - double the hormones, which explains why I've been so sick and been struggling so much with exhaustion! I KNEW I was feeling much worse than with DD, but assumed a boy, not twins!

34PinkLadyApple · 19/03/2013 22:01

Wow legally! Such a great surprise! Half hoped for twins myself as we want 2 and i only have to be preg once, ha ha. I trued to put my scan pic on here but failed, can you?

So chuffed for u and the daddy x

pinkbuttons · 19/03/2013 22:06

Congratulations on all the positive scans today! So lovely to hear everyones news.
and how excitong legally! No words of wisdom to offer here Im afraid but so glad your happy and theyre both looking healthy.
Its all starting to feel very real!!

Flyer747 · 19/03/2013 22:48

Fab News Legally....like someone else said wowsers :-)

roxvox · 19/03/2013 22:56

Congratulations to everyone who had scans today! A week and 2 days until mine and all of your stories are making me feel very excited! Must control myself...

Congrats on the twins legally, very exciting! I personally would love to have twins, and they do run in the family, but I am sure that I just have the one bean in there as my symptoms have been non existent!

I feel like I am tempting fate just saying that. I really hope there's at least one baby kicking and swinging his or her arms around in there!

Tarlia · 19/03/2013 23:03

ducks how are you? How did it go with the dr? Thinking of you.

Wow, amazing scan results again today, including twins, wowee!! Congrats, ladies! 34 amazing to be put forward 6 days! You must be growing a lovely healthy bundle!

legally Re breastfeeding twins, I know of a few that did this exclusively, but might be worth popping over to that board for advice in 'feed the world'. I'm still breastfeeding DS 25 months in the evening, I've had to physically drop the feeds myself and hoped he would get bored/milk dry up but it's the first thing he asks for after dinner and is always told pjs first.

Umla I'm in scandinavia. Def not heard of any 12 week internal scans here at all, so don't think that's the reason. All early scans are internal though as done in the gyne office and thats what they all have. My last antenatle group discovered its a difference in age of equipment as her uk hospital didn't need it and she asked.

Has anyone felt any flutters yet?

terrifiednewbie · 20/03/2013 00:02

Congrats on all the great scan news-huge news re twins!

for what its worth; by about 8 weeks gestation you can check viable pregnancy in a slim woman, normal anteverted uterus on a transabdominal scan but you dont really get the level of clarity you would on a transvaginal ie to date. By 12 weeks you rarely need transvaginal (lots of bowel gas retroverted uterus is one example I can think of). A good sonographer can check for a lot of detailed anomalies eg significant cardiac anomolies on a 12 week transvaginal but its uncomfortable so not one you would do for long. I have some colleagues who swear they can tell you the sex on a 12 week transvaginal too! Scans are done differently-parts of Italy for example are very big on doing third trimester additional anomoly scans so pick up more problems regarding growth probs for example.

Im not an obs and gynae doc but specialise in an area where we work closely with team. Was doing a joint antenatal clinic today when i had more spotting so a colleague kindly did a quick transabdominal scan for me. Feel guilty doing it without dh there but one little munchkin with heart beating away and arms and legs swimming away bang on for dates. Empty gestational sac with yolk adjacent to it. Mixed feelings but very relieved one little one batting along nicely. Had i not been whisked onto couch for quick scan i probably wouldnt have known about the non viable twin. Got a few pics for hubby but proper 12 week scan next week.

Rest up all- exciting times ahead x

tuckingfits · 20/03/2013 01:41

Just wanted to say to jellycurl - I'm not a stalker just have amazing powers of deduction (not). I am glad you had good care during labour & delivery, not my experience tbh which is why I am determined not to have the same hospital midwife as before. I had a post birth debrief, months later with a consultant who admitted that had my care been undertaken by a more experienced team (and a midwife "who listened") it would all have been much less scary & traumatic. Anyway, that's enough of my frighteners,I know many many women who have had excellent birth experiences,so mine is not the norm. That will be my mantra!!

Iheartcrunchiebars · 20/03/2013 06:51

Congrats legally!! That is so exciting but what a shock! You must have a million things going through your head this morning. I keep hoping we have twins but don't think my sickness has been bad enough!
