Aww I really hope I can bf this time! Was so disappointed and annoyed with the hospital midwives that I didn't get to with dd, she was tongue tied and couldn't latch on at all. The midwives were so rough with her that soon everytime I tried she would just scream. Not to mention all of them implied it was my fault. Wasn't until we had given up and put her on a bottle that a midwive finally dicovered she was tongue tied, and that was when she was a week old. By which point they refused to correct it as it wasn't classed an emergency because she could feed from a bottle. Atleast if this dc is tongue tied I will know what to look for I suppose.

Thinking of you ncs, hope everything is ok tomorrow.

So tired today, cancelled body combat tonight. I do a job share now after having DS so Monday is the only full day I'm in work, glad it's out the way now for this week. Got to take DS for his MMR tomorrow so really not looking forward to him being out of sorts for the next week or so Hmm

vix206 · 18/03/2013 21:50

DS did the crawling up and latching on thing too. Feeding was painful for first few weeks but he was an absolute milk fiend. For over 2 years Grin

Hoping my next one is the same!

Saundy · 18/03/2013 21:52

I've never heard of a baby being tongue tied before, what is that?

Saundy · 18/03/2013 21:53

& when you guys say the crawling up to feed thing - they can't actually pull their own weight can they?!

MotherOfCleo · 18/03/2013 22:00

ahh mumma my cousin was tongue tied and they didnt realise till he was 2 and struggling to talk, sundy it is where the flap of skin under the tongue is too long and ties the tongue down, its fairly easy to sort I believe.....if they spot it.

busyprocrastinating · 18/03/2013 22:21

I couldn't bf dd either. She just wouldn't attempt to latch on saw lots of people and had a peer supporter but we couldn't get her to try. I did manage to express for just under a year though but hoping the next one is easier!

Thanks getoff. I just can't seem to shake it and I am feeling pretty miserable

MummaPanda · 18/03/2013 22:29

Yea they just snip it, its very easy. Aparently dd's shouldn't be bad enough that it will affect her speech. So I hope that's the case.
Aparently it affects 1 in 10 babies, and is mainly genetic, but was not really recognised as a condition until recently. For example, she got it from my dh, who didn't even know that he had it until we found out dd did!

saundy I'm probably making the crawling thing sound way more impressive than it was. Her head was in between my breasts (a bit lower than nipple height). She sort of managed push herself and slither over to a nipple and latch on.

She then didn't move an inch till about 5 months old Grin

MsFanackerPants · 19/03/2013 02:01

Hello. Think I posted on a wrong thread, whoops. I got a bfp yesterday. Due Nov 27, feel really anxious and not letting myself get too excited yet, although DP is delighted. It's baby number one and my first pregnancy. It's only been our second month of trying and as I got my IUD removed on ovulation day in the first month, it all seems so surreal and so much quicker than I was anticipating.

Saundy · 19/03/2013 04:57

Aah when that sounds less freaky, my imagination was playing that out quite differently!!

I can't believe bring tongue tied us so common yet unheard of, poor babas.

Welcome & congrats MsF lots of first timers here, myself included. It also happened a lot quicker than I had planned for. A lot if advice on forums was to get the implant out & start trying a year before you actually want to get pregnant. I had an app on my phone that told me my fertile days so I knew which to avoid, bad move, preggers straight away. I'm not complaining though, I know it makes us really lucky.

Have had a night of the strangest dreams & been woken up now by my pains (nothing exciting just the usual pain). I'm sure someone put on another thread that their cyst persisted until week 16!! I'm hoping that's not gonna be the case here.

ncsmummy · 19/03/2013 05:47

Been awake since 3.45! Not been sleeping well anyway and worrying about this morning was never going to help! OH keeps telling me he is sure everything is ok but I cant let myself think it. He has been looking after me so well bless him

Saundy · 19/03/2013 05:56

Oh ncs I was just thinking about you. I'm glad you're being looked after, have your symptoms improved?

ncsmummy · 19/03/2013 06:07

Thanks saundy I havent had any pain since sunday afternoon and the bleeding seems to have settled to occasional spotting since yesterday morning. I am just so scared to hear what they have to say, seem to spend the whole time either in tears or on the verge of it!

stuffthenonsense · 19/03/2013 06:12

Yet another crap night.
I'm another longer term breast feeder. All between 11months and (so far)33 months. All have been or are tandem feeders too. Had the most horrendous time with no5 due to lip and tongue tie, sadly the nhs really don't take it seriously as there has always formula which completely fails on the WHO infant nutrition guidelines, the future of the child's speech, dental health etc etc. we had to go private to get his lip and tongue lasered when he was nearly 6 months and my nipples had holes you could get a pencil in (not that I tried). The op lasted about 2 minutes and we've not looked back but the issues created initially by the ties have left him with a developmental delay of about 3 months.
Most bf issues can be sorted but my goodness you have to fight to get the help you need....bf peer supporters are amazing but for some issues an ibclc lactation consultant is an essential.

stuffthenonsense · 19/03/2013 06:15

Just reread that, the nhs tongue tie policies are at fault not ff. was that clear?

getoffthecoffeetable · 19/03/2013 06:17

Have been thinking of you too ncs good that your DH is looking after you so well. Sending you positive thoughts and prayers for this morning.

Am feeling loads better this morning, I think this tummy bug has finally gone. fairy I don't think I'm going to be taking these travel bands off anytime soon, they're fantastic why didn't I know about them last pregnancy?

How's everyone doing?

DS was a tummy crawler too. Had awful trouble at first and then a fantastic midwife came up from neonatal, strippedy top half, put loads of pillows under each arm, plonked DS on my chest and he shuffled down and fed fine ever since. I stopped bf when he was 10.5 months as I had to have antibiotics that would've made his milk teeth yellow. Couldn't face pumping and dumping for ten days!

Saundy · 19/03/2013 06:29

Well that's really positive ncs it was really hard last week when we had to go for ours but you just have to try & empty your mind. I just kept telling myself it was an opportunity to get a cheeky early scan in & would all be fine, which thankfully it was. Try & be at least neutral if you can't be positive & don't let your mind go there. Not long now, I hope it goes well.

Glad you're feeling better GOTCT have still dodged the sickness but I've enough to be getting on with anyway.

I have to say you lot aren't making this bf sound straightforward at all!

getoffthecoffeetable · 19/03/2013 06:36

Thanks saundy

Breast feeding can be really easy to some people. SIL just put DN to her breast and he's hardly come off since. Most do need some help in my experience but once you get the hang of it, it's a doddle and you wonder what the problem was! The main thing to remember is it feels weird but it's not supposed to hurt.

Saundy · 19/03/2013 06:38

So if it does hurt are you doing it wrong? Are there wrong & right ways to do it? I thought either they latch on & it's fine or they don't & it's bottle time. Would anything other than a over zealous baby make it hurt?

Dizzy81 · 19/03/2013 06:43

Ncs, hope all goes ok later.

Thanks for all the tips etc regarding bf, I'm finding them very useful.

louby86 · 19/03/2013 06:57

You get used to it and can tell if they've not latched properly because you'll get a really sharp pain, well that's what happened to me! I was really lucky though because DS soon got the hang of it, it was how often he wanted to feed that became an issue for us, coupled with me struggling mentally after quite a horrible birth so in the end for the sake of my head we ended up moving to formula.

I'm going to give BF a go with this one though and hopefully be more successful with it!

vix206 · 19/03/2013 07:03

Saundy, re the crawling thing... If you google breast crawl you will find a you tube video. Absolutely amazing to watch Shock

Saundy · 19/03/2013 07:08

There's so much to think about!! But this is all good prep. I shudder to think what might come up if I search for breast crawl Wink but I'll trust you & have a gander.

Theicingontop · 19/03/2013 07:09

Saundy my midwife told me that nipple pain in the first few days is almost guaranteed whether your baby is latching well or not. She said your nipples go from being encased in a bra and hardly ever touched to being sucked on every hour, and it takes time for them to 'toughen' up.

I don't know about everyone else but this was certainly true for me, DS had a near-perfect latch but my nipples still bled and cracked for three days and it really hurt, and then by the end of the first week it was fine Smile

But it was such a quick healing process because he was latching correctly, you should always try to rule out latching issues before 'grinning and bearing it' etc.
