Everyone's opinions and thoughts are welcome here, we're all very different people who feel differently about these things, its just interesting to know!! all I know for sure is I wouldn't want the further testing so I have decided that the initial tests aren't for me. I'm 25 so hopefully I'm in good odds anyway!!

TheFalconsmistress · 07/03/2013 17:01

Had a good day today got a new (old) car and i went to a baby super store it was amazing I think I am getting brave i will be 11 weeks on Sunday but i still worry about having a mmc scan a few weeks away don't feel terrible anymore but i still feel pregnant so not worrying i have no big symptoms but no feeling of dread.

I looked at some amazing prams but good baby stuff is expensive really hoping hubby gets a job in his summer break he is a mature student :)

BowlFullofJelly · 07/03/2013 17:01

Re the early scans - if you have a positive scan at 8 weeks and heart beat detected your risk of miscarriage is reduced to 1.5% and at 9 weeks 0.5%, which from what I understand is pretty much the same as a good scan at 12 weeks.

Unfortunately there is ALWAYS a risk that something will go wrong until baby is in your arms. And then all of the worry continues with keeping them alive and well {grin}

cuillereasoupe · 07/03/2013 17:09

Just back from our scan and one of the two is no longer viable. Bit sad but not really much of a surprise TBH. The doc has given me a sicknote for all next week so I can get plenty more sitting on my arse on the sofa in.

Rockchick1984 · 07/03/2013 17:24

So sorry to hear that cuillereasoupe hope you're ok.

Re Down's screening we didn't go for any of the testing last time and don't plan on it this time. If it gave a definitive yes or no (without any risk of miscarriage) I'd get it done however realistically being told 1 in 10 chance or 1 in 50,000 chance, you could be that one either way, and I couldn't say at what odds I'd have an amniocentesis and risk losing my baby, healthy or otherwise.

Smitten1981 · 07/03/2013 17:28

Im having the nuchal scan done. It wasn't put to me like it was something I could opt out of at the booking appt, but I would like to know anyway.

jelly I would give the party a miss. I've been to too many social things the past two weeks where I've had to lie to friends or keep an eye on what foods they are cooking etc, I just feel awful for not telling them so I've decided to opt out of things for the next month till my scan.

I've told my close friends but one of them nearly let things slip last night when we were with friends who we haven't told. It's a minefield.

JellyCurls · 07/03/2013 17:38

c...soup sorry can't remember how to spell your name, sorry for your mixed news but glad still one baby in there.

Think we are going for tests but only to know risks then make an informed decision based on the result. Results for dc1 were fine but her brain didn't develop fully so tests don't show up everything. Not sure we could cope with another SN child, forgive me for saying this please. Didn't get test with dc2 and was worried sick whole way through. So NT test and bloods next Wednesday it is

34PinkLadyApple · 07/03/2013 17:41

We are having the Nuchal Scan and bloods done at 12 week scan. I wasn't sure either way so asked midwife if it's common to have it done and she said 95% of people do so I just said yes. like some on here, it would mean a decision would have to be made as to whether we have the next test if I'm high risk and whether to keep this little bean or not and personally I don't think we could. I just know us and we would not be strong enough parents to bring up a Downs child so it's not a selfish desicion. I applaud those who can/will, I really do.

Excuse my last post my phone threw a wobbly and posted half way through let's start again....

So sorry to hear that cuillereasoupe sending virtual hugs. When this happened to me two weeks ago I was an emotional mess after it happened too me but now I'm feeling very positive about my remaining baby :-)

Seriously tired today
I was just thinking atchly to those who are going for the nuchal screening will u be telling your pregnancy news after your scan or after your screening results as obv they take an extra few days-week to come back after the scan

CelticPromise · 07/03/2013 17:52

cuillereasoup I'm so sorry. Take care.

FalconsMistress there are some great bargains around if you don't mind secondhand. We've got since great stuff from charity shops and NCT sales, really good quality too. Also some bits from Netmums Local and freecycle, and a Bugaboo off eBay. DS never had anything new Grin

Re Downs testing, we won't be having it. We didn't have it last time. There was a point in my pregnancy when there was talk of amnio to find out if there was a genetic problem, but actually DS was delivered before I could turn it down (with no genetic problems). It's a very personal choice and you do what's right for your own family. Luckily DH and I are on the same page about it, would be tough if we weren't I think.

Wickedgirl · 07/03/2013 17:53

Jelly.......can you not say that you're on a course of antibiotics? You wouldn't be able to drink with those. Or drive yourself there and say you can't drink as you have to drive home and gave an early start.

I am going to have a nuchal fold scan. I wasn't offered one in my other pregnancies but at my age (37) and with 3 older children to also consider, I need to know what's what. If the hospital still doesn't offer it to me, I will get one done privately (£175 ouch!)

SeriousStuff · 07/03/2013 18:01

Just to join in the nuchal scan discussion - we won't be having it done. My Aunt has down's syndrome as does one of my oldest and best friends and they both have amazing personalities, are passionate about what they enjoy in life and my friend even works three jobs and is incredibly proud that she earns a salary. She even shouts myself and my husband dinner when she's paid sometimes. And out of every possible disability you could have, it is one where the child these days can get the same opportunities as other children, so there was never any question that we would keep the baby regardless. Having said that, I understand why people would have it done but I do think more needs to be done to educate people about the manageability of down's syndrome.

What I'm glad to hear is that hospitals are giving people the choice now. I remember my friend when she had a baby around 10 years ago being forced into having it done even though she didn't want to.

Well, nausea is still very much here! 12 days until 12 week scan!

BowlFullofJelly · 07/03/2013 18:17

Thanks for all of the advice. Am going to give it a miss. It's too close to drive to, and though I could try the antibiotics ruse it just wouldn't wash! Friends are kind of expecting another one from us soon, I'm a terrible liar, and I've been known to carry on boozing while on antibiotics Wink.

legallyblond · 07/03/2013 18:21

Hi all!

Haven't posted in ages and ages... Sorry!

Still all fine here. Had my (two?!) booking in appointments and 12 week scan is just over a week away (19th march). Re the Michael fold and bloods, I will have it but, as last time, know now that I would def not go for amnio etc if high risk as we would definitely keep it no matter what and so it would not be worth the miscarriage risk. If there were no miscarriage risk, I would find out for sure, but just to prepare puselves and family as aborting wouldn't be an option for us (but am conscious I've not been in that situation, so I guess one never knows....).

We will wait to "announce" until we get the bloods back, so until I'm 13 weeks + I guess. Last time we waited until 16 weeks!

Still feeling very very sick.... I am violently sick usually 4-5 times a day... A bit of a shock to the system as I wasn't sick once with DD and was barely queasy... Nothing helps Sad. Some days keeping anything die. Is a struggle! As a result though, still very much in my tight jeans etc!!!

Will catch up on posts now and comment in due course... Grin

Sal1977 · 07/03/2013 18:38

We are going to get the tests and see what the results are before making a decision on the amnio etc.

DP's aunt has Downs and is severely disabled with it and my friend has a younger sister who also has it but not so disabled. Her parents are in their 70's now and don't know what they will do in a few years time as she is unable to work or live unassisted etc. So I guess my point is that there are so many levels of disability and associated health problems with Downs that its hard to prepare for the unknown.

For us, it's not something we feel able to take on, regardless of how heartbreaking a decision it would be.

My sisters friend had the result of 1/5 risk, had the amnio and all was well, very healthy little boy now causing havoc!

Very tough subject.

I want an early scan. Been told NO by DP. He says we have no reason to believe there's a problem, so tough sh*t! Haha

ananikifo · 07/03/2013 18:57

Hi everyone!

The discussion of testing is very interesting. We wouldn't consider terminating so I'd rather not know. I've read that the reason Down syndrome is so heavily tested for is not because it's so horrible or risky, but rather because it's so well-studied and the tests are available.

I've now been home 4 days with this flu and am finally felling better flu-wise. Unfortunately I think the nausea is here to stay. It's more evening sickness than morning sickness but its definitely been a daily occurrence this week.

I had planned leave for tomorrow anyway, as we have the midwife appt, a mortgage appt, and then DH's parents coming and we'll tell them the news. We have quite a big day planned, as you can see. I just hope I feel ok through it all.

OrangeBlossom2 · 07/03/2013 19:06

Congrats to those who had positive scans today.
Cuille I am sorry to hear you had mixed news. Congratulations on your remaining strong little baby.

I wasn't aware there was an opt out of the nuchal fold test. But we have already agreed we wouldn't go for the invasive testing regardless of the results.

How are you today rainbow?

roxvox · 07/03/2013 19:32

It says on my 12 week scan letter to drink 2 (yes, two) pints of water one hour before the scan, and not go to the toilet for that hour before the scan. As a test I drank 1 pint of water half an hour ago, and I'm already busting for a wee!

racheld33 · 07/03/2013 20:00

Evening all, interesting reading the debate about Down syndrome testing. We opted out with our DS, and will do the same with this pregnancy. Definately will keep baby whatever, so was no point us even thinking about it. My cousin has severe form of angelmans syndrome (which is obviously not something is tested for), so my thought on it is of all the things that can happen, Down syndrome is the only one they actually can test for.

That said, I am very pro choice and completely support everyone's decision to decide. It must be so hard if you and DP don't agree, that's when it must get more of a dilemma.

Haylebop12 · 07/03/2013 20:05

roxvox as long as your bladders full then it's ok, don't make yourself uncomfortable!

BirdsDoIt · 07/03/2013 20:37

Roxvox, that's interesting - my scan letter says I don't need a full bladder for my scan - they must use different kit in different places!

legallyblond my scan's on 19 march too! When I read 'just over a week away' I thought no, it's longer than that (feels like I've been waiting for EVER to find out if there's actually a baby in there) but you're right! Just over a week! Woo hoo!

We're definitely getting the nuchal & blood tests - like others have said, I'm not good with not knowing at all - but don't know yet what we'd do if deemed high risk. With a risk of 1% miscarriage from Cvs or amnio I think the odds would have to be pretty high for us to go for it. And as bowlful said, you can't be certain about any of it really! Had the good news today though that we'll get results of the combined test while at hospital for scan, so no hideous protracted wait for results and hopefully if all is well we can tell family at Easter weekend (though trying not to let myself get excited about that yet...)

cherrycherry41 · 07/03/2013 22:06

Today, i cant shake the feeling that i'm having twins. Its really odd but for some reason my brain keeps referring to them as 'they' and them for that matter!
Really, really odd Confused

SeriousStuff · 07/03/2013 22:13

birdsdoit and legallyblond I'm scanning on 19th too! Can't wait to hear how you get on.

roxvox · 07/03/2013 23:04

Thanks haylebop12 and birdsdoit. I think I'll just drink slowly over the hour prior to the scan. I don't cope well mentally with a full bladder.

Anyone else with a scan on the 28th?! Seems so far away, I just hope all is good!

We're going to have all of the tests done, but it is very undecided as to what we'll do with that information.

cherrycherry41 I googled a while ago to try and find out early (pre-scan) signs that you're having twins (just out of interest), and one of the signs was 'mothers intuition'. So you never know! My brain seems undecided and I'll sometimes refer to my bump as 'he' and other times I'll say 'she'. Kind of hoping I've got one of each in there, but my lack of symptoms would suggest otherwise.
