Suzy - I'm getting mine at 36 weeks on basis that (luck holding out) I won't deliver before 38 weeks, it gives 2 full weeks for the vaccination to cross the placenta, and gives a lot of time for baby to be fat and as grown as possible before he's hit with it.

I do live in Zone 2 London, though, so it's a bit of a no-brainer in terms of getting it, with the dense population, etc. If I lived out in the countryside I might be making a different decision.

I am annoyed today. So since the beginning of this pregnancy I have had insomnia. Midwife, GP, pharmacist all said suck it up, nothing can be done. Did some research and discovered that the active ingredient in Sominex, an over the counter sleeping pill, is prescribed for morning sickness, so obviously safe in pregnancy. Mentioned this to consultant ten weeks ago. She said, 'oh yes, that's fine, we often suggest women take anti histamines for various things and this is just the same' etc etc. So have merrily been taking it. Not every night, just when desperate or when a good nights sleep is needed because big day at work or something. Went to pharmacist today and she was horrified, refused to sell me it and told me off. She said consultants don't know about drug prescribing and I should listen to her. She said that its safety hadn't been established, you shouldn't take anything that is absolutely necessary and that I must stop now.

Now in some ways I see her point. I understand that as a starting position drugs in pregnancy = bad and should be avoided only when absolutely necessary. However I had got to the point that I was barely able to function and this has revolutionised my life. I was always falling over and making mistakes and now I am free from all that. Therefore my view was that, on balance, this could be justified. And evidently the Consultant agreed. But now I am worried. Not hugely because my own research does not reveal it to cause any problems in studies, but obvioulsy they don't routinely test drugs on pregnant women. In these circumstances I know you lot would say, 'ask your midwife' but I know she thinks drugs = bad, all the time, for everything. It's really just the Consultant who has ok'd it, and its fair to say the Consultant may not be the best person to make a call on these things. ARGH.

Ring the Breastfeeding network - they often have a lot more data on what is safe for breastfeeding, and to a certain degree that holds true for what is also safe in pregnancy.

Sarah no idea what to do my love. I'd imagine medical practitioners are like anyone though and each forms their opinion based on training and knowledge gained. This means you may get different viewpoints depending on who you speak to.

Just wanted to warn anyone buying gap maternity jeans. I bought some in the January sales which hav already worn through on the inside leg. whilst I've worn them quite a bit I've been buying gap jeans for years due to their excellent fit on me normally they should last me a year o two. Not 2 months. Have written to them in the hope of a refund. Bit irritated because I was so chuffed with their fit I bought a second pair a couple of weeks ago. Fingers crossed they last 3 more months!

arlandria666 · 11/03/2013 16:50

i haven't wrote on here lately but been catching up when i can...as i get bigger i am finding it really hard to get comfortable to sleep and keep waking up with pins and needles in my hands that last ages...are pregnancy pillows worth the money considering buying one tonight i am exhausted :-( x x

forgetmenots · 11/03/2013 17:26

Arlandria mine was worth every penny! Has been lovely for sitting, sleeping and meant to be good too for nursing!

Olimoss · 11/03/2013 17:45

Just bought 2 V pillows from M&S and they have been aces....think they were £12 each.

pinkbear82 · 11/03/2013 17:45

Ah yes whooping cough jab, expect MW will remind on wed when I see her to book in for that. evil nurse mentioned when she was stealing my blood for the GTT, I'd rather not see her and needles in the same room again but have a feeling I will.

My 'sausage' pillow (maternity pillow nickname.....whatever next?!) is lovely my friend gave it to me, it doesn't always last n the bed all night but certainly for getting comfy for falling asleep it's lovely..... Also good to put in middle I'd bed and keep DP to his side rather than squashing me on edge of bed Wink oh and the cats like it if I'm not using it...... Multi functional at its best!!

Sarah meds seem to get different reactions depending which way the winds blowing. When I was in hospital I was on codeine, all drs said was it was ok and the MW that came to check bubs said was fine. Then one nurse came on shift and was dishing out the meds did a huge in take of breath and said 'oooo not sure I'd be taking that if I were you, but its been prescribed. But I'd think about asking to stop it if I were you' which then set me panicking and cut it back only to then end up in pain and not know what to do.
I'd try phoning your GP and discuss with them, a mixed response may well be the best you can hope for - but there must be something they can do to help with sleep. Good luck.

MrsBri · 11/03/2013 17:51

How frustrating, Sarah. I'm not sure what is best, but redwelly's suggestion sounds like a good place to start.

Re baby's activity at night, I definitely feel it on the side leaning on the pillow. The other night I got a few sharp kicks every time I turned over too. I'm hoping baby lets me sleep tonight as I feel physically sick I'm so tired. And I must look awful as some women at work said I look like I'm struggling. Oh dear! Still 9 weeks til I finish too. :-/

Baby has done lots of rotating today too...urggghhh.

And I love my maternity pillow. Definitely worth the money. :-)

MrsBri · 11/03/2013 17:53

Oh, and trying to book the whooping cough jab and my surgery when I'm free was like trying to crack the Enigma code. Decided to wait til I finish work at 35 weeks and go then, even though 28-32 is apparently the preferred time.

Sunbeam18 · 11/03/2013 18:07

Sarah, sorry to hear about that upset. I would try not to worry about it and do as much online research as you can re the active ingredient. At the end of the day nobody wants to take responsibility for making a decision without a good evidence base, I suppose, so lots of HPs prefer to advise against any medication during pregnancy as there is no little definite evidence. It's your decision to weigh up, really. I'm an editor of medical publications so will do a bit of digging tomorrow on the active ingredient for you.

Is anyone experiencing what feels like vaginal bone pain? I have such a pain upon walking and it's on the left side right at the top of my inner thigh and inside. It hurts to lift my left foot up even to put on tights etc. Could it be pelvic, and is this something I should get checked? Ouch!

Olimoss · 11/03/2013 18:59

Had that Sunbeam, it was quite crippling. Would come on suddenly....I wasn't sure what it was or what to do about it so just bore it. It passed after a couple of weeks. I find bending over difficult anyway what with the farked knee, but actually it causes pain in bump and groin to do so, so there is a lot of comedy foot-grovelling into undies and trousers and tights at floor level....

SunnyL · 11/03/2013 19:24

Right I want to talk baby monitors people. My baby may be naked but I'm looking at dealing with all the accessories this week. Two friends have recommended video baby monitors while others have said its all a bit hysterical and that they've been fine with bog standard sound monitors. What do the experienced mums think? Price difference is quite substantial but if it really is worth the extra cost I'm willing to pay.

Olimoss · 11/03/2013 19:26

eavesdrops on monitor advice, has no clue what to buy

redwellybluewelly · 11/03/2013 19:36

We bought a BT monitor and paid a bit extra for it to have an MP3 connection, DH wanted to be able to stream music for the baby.

What a load of rubbish. Its been ok but wish we had got and in fact this time will buy a video monitor. Ours is on its last legs. Think we are getting the summer ville infant split screen one? So many times I rushed upstairs waking DD when in fact I think she as just dreaming. In fairness with her seizures I'm quite shocked we haven't got one sooner.

AlohaMama · 11/03/2013 19:47

Oooh I can join in on this one. I am definitely getting a video monitor. As with everything it doesn't have to mean you're a hysterical/paranoid mum, it depends how you use it. I bought sound monitor for ds then realised I actually didn't need it - our house is all one level and pretty easy to hear ds when he cried, but I did use it occasionally at friend's houses. However the number of times we heard crying, went in to check then realised ds was probably just crying in his sleep or not distressed and if we'd just left him he would have fallen asleep. Whereas going into check meant we woke him up and he thought it was party time...

As for which one to get, no idea.

AmIGoingMad · 11/03/2013 20:35

Hello all!

Mrsbri- sorry to hear about DHs job. Good to hear that you're not too stressed about it and that family are being helpful.

Congrats Georgie!Smile

Get well soon Maw!

Sarah that's really frustrating. It makes me think of the food packaging you see that says something along the lines of 'this might possibly have been produced is a factory where nuts might have been but we're not sure'! It seems that no one is happy to really have an opinion on these things!

Redwelly hope that all is ok with your mum now? Thanks for your help on the slings front. Am currently umming and ahhing between Moby wrap and baby hawk mei tai. Any thoughts anyone? I'd also agree on the boots thick maternity pads. The Tesco ones were really similar to those too and brilliant. Also handy for putting witch hazel on from the fridge for soothing.

We got a Motorola sound only one last time and I agree that it did mean that we often woke DS going in to check on him. Would like a video one this time but not sure I'll convince DH the cost is necessary when the one we had did its job. We do need a new one tho as that one has now given up the ghost.

cyclecamper · 11/03/2013 22:58

I got the monitor my sister gave me. Dunno what it is Blush. To be honest, I probably wouldn't have bought one, but we live in a 3 bed semi, so it isn't exactly enourmous. I would never have a video monitor, they creep me out.

Congratulations georgie Smile

maisiebeem · 12/03/2013 03:35

Another night of bad sleep! Not down to anything inparticular, just wake up randomly then can't get back to sleep! I used to be such a good sleeper!
Sunbeam, it sounds like symptoms of SPD I would talk to your midwife about it, mine referred me to the physio, who has helped so much! The it's I could do to help it on my own are do your pelvic floors! and your lower stomach muscles which I had forgotten existed the physio also advised me to get one of those big exercise balls to sit on, and lightly bounce on to strengthen those muscles.
As for everything else you guys have been discussing- Aaahhh! Until I watched OBEM a couple of weeks ago, and one of the ladies mentioned bleeding for 6 weeks afterwards- I had no idea that it happened! (How naive am I?!) All of a sudden it seems everyone I know is talking about it! Went for dinner with some girl friends on Saturday and that was the main topic of conversation! The thought of being on a pretty heavy period for 6weeks I think scares me more than childbirth! Can the bleeding also be accompanied by period pains?
Baby monitor wise- think we are probably going to go for a video monitor- just no idea which one! Too many to choose from!

I'm having to organise a hen do for a close friend at the end of july! (I'm probably not going as can't imagine a night anytime at all away from my new born baby!) Just stuck on ideas of something to do during the day- it will be in London- does any one have any original ideas? Don't want anything typically "hen do". Going to go out for a nice tapas meal on the evening, then drinks and possibly clubbing! But don't know what to organise for the day! HELP PLEASE LADIES! Smile
Hope everyone is sleeping better than me!

Mutley77 · 12/03/2013 05:47

maisie - there are loads of things you could choose from, it depends what you want to do? Something touristy like the London Eye, or going round the tower of London perhaps? Or Vinnopolis - is a wine tasting experience which is pretty good? Or we did duck tours on a hen night once, was not overwhelming but was original and kind of fun.

We have a bog standard 8 year old digital monitor (no video) which has been used for both my DC and met our needs perfectly - and I will use again as long as it works. I did have both DC in our room until six months plus though, if they were sleeping in another room at a very early age I might have got some use out of a video monitor as I felt more need to see them quickly without getting up if I woke up during the night.

MrsBri · 12/03/2013 07:10

Maisie, I didn't know about the prolonged bleeding either! Food for thought somewhat. Think DH is a bit bemused too...looks like the sympathy blow jobs might be going on longer than anticipated, ha ha!

We only have a sound monitor, passed to us from a friend. Baby will sleep in with us until he's sleeping through the night then getting moved into the nursery.

Oh, we put headphones on the bump on Sunday, which led to me being battered :-) Not sure if that was baby liking or hating Muse though...but you'd think that as we conceived the day we went to a Muse gig baby would like them a bit!

pinkapples · 12/03/2013 07:18

Up bright and early for my GTT this morning woohoo hungry but not allowed to eat so not impressed thought I'd stay in bed until absolutely necessary then I wouldn't be so bad Grin

Hehe mrs bri my hubby has become quite accustomed to them to the poor man life must be hard for them! I wonder if they spare a thought for us?

Baby monitor front not a clue what to get so any suggestions are greatly listened too!

MrsBri · 12/03/2013 07:31

I don't envy you that, pink...I'm so hungry when I wake up. :-/

And my DH is quite good in that he says he doesn't expect them. But then jokes about how long it's been without one if it has been about 2 weeks! Ah well, suppose I am at least trying to fulfil my marital duty :-)

Sarah2506 · 12/03/2013 07:37

Mrs Bri, we have been engaging in an early years musical education programme. She liked public enemy and foo fighters a lot- jumps to them. Despises Katy perry and Taylor swift. Harsh kicks there. Indifferent to most of everything else though. We had a name breakthrough whilst listening to Nevermind the other day. For half way through, polly was on and we just said 'that's her name!'. So she is Polly. It's not in top 100 names which was important to us. And it is a token nod to our love of music and can nominally be after the Nirvana song and PJ Harvey. Don't get why not popular, so similar to Poppy and Molly and they are everywhere!

forgetmenots · 12/03/2013 07:51

Polly is a lovely name Sarah, I like it better than both Molly and Poppy, and it's lovely to have that connection to the music you like too.
