That's a great support set-up you have there faith - I hope our lot is as helpful! Did you get yourself an amenity room or are you in a bay? Comfortable otherwise?

HadALittleFaithBaby · 18/04/2013 15:20

Oh they're awesome. We have midwives looking afte the Mums and then the transitional care staff - neonatal nurses and nursery nurses - supporting the babies. So if I need painkillers I ask my MW, if I want feeding advice I ask the TC staff. The TC staff will take her for a couple of hours so I can sleep!

Well the nipple shield is going well! Currently feeding about every 30-45 mins (!) Shock generally for short periods but currently been going for nearly an hour! She seems to be getting more and more settled between feeds too - she even slept in her cot for 15 mins so I got a snooze! MSB has gone home for lunch and to fetch some stuff.

We're in a bay of 7. I don't mind, the noise was bad the first night but I have one of the noisiest babies here!

pinkr · 18/04/2013 17:04

Wow sounds like you are getting great support...the hospital I'm due to go to just kicks you out according to other girls I know. I'm hoping I'll be able to get into the midwife led unit at our local hospital after the birth for similar support...know one hotel who did it but it dependshow busy they are.

JethroTull · 18/04/2013 20:07

The care in your hospital sounds amazing! Where are you? Glad it is getting a bit easier, the stories of BFing have terrified me to be honest.

Like Pink our local hospital actively promotes a 12 hour exit post birth. I'm trying not to think that far ahead.

MsJupiterJones · 18/04/2013 20:17

It does sound like fab care Faith. Should mean you are off to a great start by the time you get home. You are doing a fab job, it must be hard. Thanks

FriendofDorothy · 18/04/2013 20:55

I couldn't get out of hospital fast enough but that was partly because I knew I would have good support at home and my aunt was a retired breastfeeding expert so plenty of help.

Also, I had a relatively easy baby so I was lucky there.

HadALittleFaithBaby · 18/04/2013 22:16

jeff please, please understand our ishoos with feeding are birth weight related, not breast feeding. They've told me it would probably be the same if she was bottle fed (refusing bottles at times). The sucking action from latching or having a bottle expends lots of energy that low birth weight baybees just don't have!

However, I think we've turned a corner! We are getting there I think (finally!). this morning we tried feeding with a nipple shield and she's barely stopped! I feel so much happier, she is more content. DH took her this afternoon and got her properly settled and she napped for 2 hours so I did too! Only buggar is I have to express after each feed because she won't drain the boob properly.
If we can successfully continue this tonight, I really think we might get home tomorrow. Longest 4 days of my life but the sense of satisfaction when she feeds right is indescribable!

HadALittleFaithBaby · 19/04/2013 08:08

She's done it!!!!! No top ups. Feeding 2-3 hourly and settled in cot each time I put her down. She got more sleep than me because I couldn't settle for ages/ couldn't believe she just slept! She's washed and dressed. I want to take her home :)

fertilityFTW · 19/04/2013 08:16

Congratulations faif and minifaif!
That's lovely news to start the day on :)
T'will be such fun settling her into her new home and I'm sure you'll be glad of your own bed by now!

FriendofDorothy · 19/04/2013 08:20

Hurray! Well done.

JethroTull · 19/04/2013 19:08

Hurrah for home Faith! I hope you're feeling ok?

In relation to my previous comments it wasn't just your story re BF but the ones told on t'other place. If I'm honest I've always been a bit afraid of it & may well just bottle feed if it doesn't work straight away. Time will tell!

HadALittleFaithBaby · 19/04/2013 22:03

It's not easy to get BF established jeff, I won't lie, but it is awesome when they get it! You feel like superwoman and so special because you can do for your baybee what no-one else can. I'd say, unless there's a medical reason to stop, aim to stick with bf for a week to get it established, even if it means cup feeding to top baybee up.

We are home. Forget the nipple shield though Confused bought some from Boots but they aren't the same. However she actually managed to latch on her own tonight which is progress. She seems very windy so MSB is just trying to relax her...

FriendofDorothy · 19/04/2013 22:26

It took me weeks to feel truly comfy and confident with getting The Little Mister latched on but it is well worth the effort. Breastfeeding is just so damn convenient!

pinkr · 20/04/2013 04:55

Morning all! Been sitting up as I woke up and then threw up...whilst losing bladder control again Blush must start doing constant pelvic floor! The wee one has been going crazy and jumping about. I'm hoping the vomiting is down to the Indian we had last night and bit anything else!

pinkr · 20/04/2013 04:58

Oh and glad everythings going well faith! Bet you're pleased to be home!

MsJupiterJones · 20/04/2013 07:43

One good thing about bf is the support on here. A darn sight more knowledgeable than many mws and HVs when it comes to common probs like supply issues and tongue tie. I do love it and despite L's issues we've been mixed feeding since 11 wks so it is possible to do both once bf is established.

Pinkr get clenching!

HadALittleFaithBaby · 20/04/2013 11:57

What a night! Settled ok at first but around 2.30 her breathing seemed odd and she seemed very unsettled. Then it seemed to pause for a few seconds. She seemed cold (I realised the room was cool because I'd turned the heating down when pregnant as I was baking). so I stripped her off and did skin to skin and she perked up. Rang 111 who talked is through things and she was alert when we got off the phone by they said go to A&E to get her checked over. Diagnosis of apnoea either because her was either due to her getting cold or because I took a codiene for pain. I was told the codiene would be safe when BF but I won't take any more chances so its paracetamol and I'll see the GP about alternatives. Had dihydrocodiene in hospital with good effect.

So yes, horrendous but aside from refusing to sleep lying down she is fine now! I fed her at 7.30 then got two hours sleep while MSB stayed up. We caved and gave her 30mls expressed milk from a cup and she still fed for 1/2 hour. MW is visiting soon but I've sent MSB for a kip while I feed her (again!).

Oh what bliss though, i just had a Brie and bacon sandwich. It was immense!

jupiter by mixed do you mean boob and bottle or breast and formula? If the former, when did you introduce bottle?

pinkr · 20/04/2013 12:33

Will be! I've now got a bit of a sickly tummy so hoping it was the Indian! Shame as its never been a problem and we love it...funny how it puts you off.
On a brighter note we have taken advantage of real nappy week and ordered our nappies and wipes! People at work tell me I'm crazy but Mr df is an ecologist and quite keen not to add landfill...we go to ridiculous lengths to compost and recycle and he's gets miffed when I forget the reusable shopping bags! !

pinkr · 20/04/2013 12:34

Oh god I just missed your post faiththat maybe been so scary...glad she's ok!

HadALittleFaithBaby · 20/04/2013 13:13

Oh I am happier now! Seen MW who has reassured me it probably was her temp. Weight has stayed the same since Thurs and that's exclusively on my breast milk. Also Faithlet just latched without a shield :) She has really reassured me and I'm still adamant I'll keep bf because she is really getting the hang of it and if she's maintaining weight it's clearly doing her good!

pink sympathies on dodgy tummy. Could just be the spices affecting your digestive system?

FriendofDorothy · 20/04/2013 13:18

Keep bf. You are clearly doing a good job. I would be pretty sure that the codeine has nothing to go with it!

MsJupiterJones · 20/04/2013 13:45

That must have been scary Faith. They do get very cold hands & feet at night which is normal but if her body was cold then that probably explains it. It's already scary when they breathe irregularly and do that pausing thing.

L only slept on his own at night really from 6 weeks. Up till then we did shifts during the night. It's natural for them to want that warmth and comfort. Those nights up till then were crazy though. DH went to bed at 9 so he could get up & take over in the small hours.

We do it all, breast, expressed and formula (and now cucumber and banana too!) First tried a bottle of ebm at around 6 weeks I think but I was crap at expressing so only occasional. Since 11 weeks he has had all three regularly. He got a bit fussy at the breast but we seem to have got through that.

fertilityFTW · 20/04/2013 14:41

Glad to hear faithlet is doing okay - that must've been a fright. Sounds like she's doing quite well on the whole though :) and without a nipple shield already as well. Do you think a room thermometer is worth getting? I'm a terrible judge of temp as it is.

pinkr that sounded like a most unpleasant wake up call - hope the tum has settled. Anything strongly flavoured for dinner seems to threaten reappearances when I lay down to sleep lately.

Been busy cleaning the windows today, since it's so deliciously blue and bright outside and a clear view is a must have before I'm laid up. GB is off work now and has spent the morning tackling my massive list of things to scrub.

DM arrives tomorrow night from the homeworld and I'm debating going to collect her from Heathrow with him - probably a 3hr round trip plus the standing around waiting. But so long as there's a loo en route and at the airport, I should be okay I'm guessing and I am so excited about seeing her.

HadALittleFaithBaby · 20/04/2013 15:13

We have an angel care monitor which has a temp gauge all set up now which should help. Both MSB and I have had sleep today so hopefully we'll cope with the night better.

fertility it sounds like home is coming together? I'm so pleased with what we achieved beforehand here! I dunno if I'd go to the airport but I am selfish! would probably get too tired!

pinkr · 20/04/2013 17:22

Feeling much better thankfully! A both sure the same things and he's fine so maybe it was a bug! Just been emptying mr df's man room which of soon to be the nursery! ! And i've been taking advantage of the weather to wash some wee clothes that purple have given us...got ridiculously excited at the sight of all the little cardies and dresses on the line!
