Huff that seems a bit rude, my bmi will be over 30 by the end of my pregnancy but its over 35 is when the unit can make a decision on not allowing waterbirth. I would look on the nhs site and take that info to your midwife.

MrsRoss26 · 08/02/2013 15:40

Oh wow, all your birth stories are incredibly moving, and useful - thank you to everyone who's shared. I'm finding more and more as I go through this pregnancy (my first) how much like my (very pragmatic, horizontal) father I am and this includes my approach to thinking about the birth. Booked into the new mw birthing centre here in the South West, so am hoping that will be a more relaxing experience than hospital, but otherwise am completely unfussed about where/when/how!

Had my 16wk mw appointment this morning, and had both a qualified and student mw. They did a listen for the heartbeat which the student mw found almost immediately and so strongly! The little bean is definitely a wriggler, replicating it's high-energy performance at the scan this morning. I had to giggle at it's moving around so much as the noises were so loud from the machine. This is definitely starting to get real! All booked in for my 25wk mw appointment now too Smile

Huffpot · 08/02/2013 16:07

Thanks photographerlady
I will definitely look it up Grin

RememberingMyPFEs · 08/02/2013 16:12

Oooh mrsross is that Cosham? My MW seems not to know how to book in at Cosham and I'm worried I'm being edged towards southmead due to age (40) and the fact it's DC1 Hmm

VinegarDrinker · 08/02/2013 17:01

Egg I have been posting there on and off for a while but wouldn't consider myself part of the furniture! Can be a bit brutal but I quite enjoy the no-bullshit attitude sometimes. I should've realised posting my specialty would basically out me, there are hardly any O&G bods posting on there.

BadMissM · 08/02/2013 17:26

Photographerlady My MW doesn't care what they have on the NHS website, she's sure it doesn't apply to her or our PCT...

lizincornwall It was 1 in 15.... Harmony Test is non-invasive test for Downs...

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/antenatal_tests_choices/1599017-Harmony-prenatal-test-anyone-know-about-it

TotallyEggFlipped Even if I wanted a homebirth, I set off whistles and bells (age, pg history, BMI), and live too far from the hospital if it all goes badly....

specialknickers Midwife-led unit not an option...nearest one to here won't allow you if you have any risk...and is 40 miles to the hospital with a maternity unit if it goes wrong...

specialknickers · 08/02/2013 19:16

Just to add (after my quite negative post earlier - mw services in my area a bit of a bugbear sorry) my lovely friend had both of her children at home and had a great experience both times. She's an ICU nurse as well, so presumably went into it with great medical info.

In other news, saw my ace osteopath again today and in two sessions he's really made a difference to my PGP / SPD... After 5 years of it I was feeling a bit glum but he seems to think all will be well this pregnancy and that ill have a diffent birth experience this time. Hurray!

Happy weekend everyone. I'm off to make some seriously gooey spaghetti as a Friday night treat. Plenty of anchovies... The baby needs anchovies. And carbs, I just know it!

Beginningofthejourney · 08/02/2013 19:39

Wow I've been away for a few days and had 11 pages to catch up on!
Can't remember most of what I intended to comment onConfused blaming baby brain. So sorry for a long 'me' post.

I'm not going to find out gender, have girls name sorted and a few boys names in mind not, love my girls name so hoping its a girl!

I have spent the afternoon trying to work out if I'll get working tax credits and how much, very confusing, ended up with 3 different amounts but I think I will be ok once I go back to work (not that I'm looking forward to that!) but will have to use savings while on mat leave, I am also a single mum (really sorry I have forgotten who said they are on their own!) so feel like I need to have a vague idea of finances.

My next scan is 1st march, if someone can add me please as I'm on iPad. Hope none of you get snowed in this weekend x

elliejjtiny · 08/02/2013 20:45

Welcome newbies. I've forgotton who has said what during my catch up thread so I'll just send an unmumsnetty (((hug))) to those who need one and so pleased for those of you who have had good scans.

I had a home waterbirth with DS1 which was fantastic but DS2 and DS3 were born in hospital due to PROM and meconium with DS2 and PROM and high BMI with DS3. This time it's got to be the labour ward but trying to be as natural as possible as I have hypermobility and baby is high risk of having it too. There is a birth pool in the labour ward and I'm really hoping I get to use it.

MrsRoss26 · 08/02/2013 20:52

Remembering yes it is Cossham, and I'm looking forward to getting a look around! I just asked my mw and she said she'd sort it! I think it's open now, but am still going to Southmead for my scans. As far as I can remember, they just have to change my booking now that it's open.

MrsRoss26 · 08/02/2013 20:54

Oops, sorry, should add that it may be possible to speak to your supervising mw about getting transferred there if your mw is being intractable. Maybe we'll be nct-ing together if you're booked in!

dinkystinky · 08/02/2013 21:31

Glad all went well at your appointment this morning MrsRoss and that the osteo is working their magic specialknickers.

Beginning - hope the tax credits work out in your favour. I have to admit I find our tax system bloody impenetrable at times!!

Marimama hope the predicted snow fall isn't too bad and your roads and sidewalks get cleared quickly.

Its DS2's birthday on Sunday - cant quite believe my little bundle is turning 4 already. It has flown by!

Thinkingof4 · 08/02/2013 22:31

Wow this thread is so busy! I can't keep up!
special that's great re osteopath. Anchovies in spag bol sounds interesting I've never tried that. I do like to add capers though!
dinky hope your ds has a lovely birthday
vinegar I can't seem to pm you but feel free to pm me! Don't know if you'll recognise my name or not!
Can't remember who has snow but I hope it doesn't cause too much disruption
It's half term here but I was working today and extremely busy so I'm hoping dh will take boys out in morning and let me catch up on some sleep. My pelvis and hips are really sore with all the rushing round today. Dh asked if I'd had a risk assessment for work and I just laughed. It's the nhs and ive never had a pregnancy risk assessment yet so don't think I'll get one this time!
I'm planning to work till 36/37 weeks, I'm surprised some people are stopping work so early, I'd go crazy waiting weeks for baby!! Mind you I can understand with some jobs like teaching it's probaly easier to fit in with term times etc plus it is really nice to have that pre-baby time esp if it's your first. Definitely a special time Smile

TotallyEggFlipped · 09/02/2013 07:57

Morning all!

I've started a stats thread here as suggested by someone earlier (sorry, I forget who)

dinkystinky · 09/02/2013 08:00

Thinking - hope your pelvis and hips are better now. I had a risk assessment at work last Friday - first one ever in 3 pregnancies - and apparently my entire chair desk computer office set up is wrong. Not that work has done anything about it of course... Hope you get your lie in this morning.

I worked to 38 weeks with ds1 which was too long as work was super stressful - 37 weeks with ds2 which was better. Suspect will work to 37 weeks with the bean too and try and use weeks holiday before mat leave kicks in.

RememberingMyPFEs · 09/02/2013 08:15

Thanks MrsRoss I'll chat to MW at 25 week appt and try to get a visit in the meantime!
Thanks

photographerlady · 09/02/2013 09:51

Morning ladies. I woke up at 8am was heavenly and now about to tuck in to our weekend tradition of Pancake Saturday.

New MW called yesterday and was sooo nice. She hospital registered me over the phone so I can get in for a 20 week scan and also squeezed me in for a new booking appointment just two days after moving in. Well she said "they will just have to fit you in", so we will see. Not longing forward to another round of blood tests while my DH grows pale watching :)

BeanstalkandBump · 09/02/2013 10:18

This is such a huge thread..... I'll never keep up. Good to try and catch up on people's post though.
I still can't add myself to the list for scans but I share mine with photographer also, it's my Dad's birthday so will be nice to share with my folks on the day.
We love our girls name too beginning but I really think this one is a boy again. Two names on that list so far, one of which seems to be getting popular on the names thread but is still way outside top 100.

I am getting really anxious already about having to have another csec whether its emergency again or elective. My recovery after a long labour and emcs after Ds was one to forget and I just don't see how I'll manage again with a toddler this time too.
I got zero pain relief until I was fully dilated and was abandoned by my mw for 4.5 hours up to that point despite begging for someone to see me. Then emcs and Ds going to scbu so not a good tale really. He was fine though but also hugely worried I'll have another giant.
Ds was 98th percentile for head circumference and length and was 9lbs 7oz. Already big with this one and I'm only a skinny bean myself Confused
Anyone got experience of vbac and care to offer some words of wisdom?
Thanks

dinkystinky · 09/02/2013 11:00

Beanstalk - DS1 was 91st percentile for everything when he came out and DS2 at 2 weeks early 8 and a half pounds and 95th percentile for head size and length so I sympathise. It might be worth posting on childbirth page for VBAC experiences. Quite a few of my Feb 09 er friends were VBACers and had the births they wanted this time round - they all made sure they got birth debriefs to understand what happened last time round, one or two had Doulas and ensured they got supportive care.

CottonSock · 09/02/2013 11:07

Hi, just catching up.
thanks for stats thread Totally I was not sure I would figure out how to do it.

been a rough week for a few of you, hope the weekend brings some rest and calm.

My DH is a medic but not me.. don't think he would be happy with home birth, but I am told the recently upgraded Midwife unit is lovely. 4 birth pool rooms, double beds, all ensuite. I hope I get to do in the pool. Seen a NCT waterbirth course in May I might sign up for if not covered in the regular antenatal class.

BB I am pondering end date too. Feels like a big decision. I have a low stress (mostly) office type job, so might try and work to about 37-38. My mum said she had to stop when she couldn't drive anymore, which may be case for me as only 5 foot tall so sit close to wheel.I think I might tell work 38 weeks and see how it goes.

Tom they could not get a vein at my last appointment, totally hopeless and I actually asked DH to find one (not take the actual blood) which he did in 2 secs. Normally I would be pissed off with him for butting in, but did not want any more holes!

Exciting hour ahead, last night I made my first baby purchase. 4 bin bags full of hardly worn 0-3 month clothes from Gumtree. Lady washed and ironed them all, some still with tags. she was an admitted shopaholic and from first glance it looks great. Paid £30 the lot and think I have enough to share with whole thread. DH even wants to look through with me!!! Also bidding on EBay for stuff.

Enjoy the (rainy) weekend.

AmaDablam · 09/02/2013 13:22

Hello everyone, happy Saturday!

I really seem to have lost the "thread" of the thread lately iyswim, there is just so much to catch up on! Hope everyone is OK though, welcome to all the new people and congratulations to all of those who have had good scans.

To pick up on a few themes - my plan at the moment is to finish work at the end of June, when I'll be almost 37 weeks. I'll take 2 weeks of annual leave then officially start M/L at 39 weeks. I've told my manager though that I want to have a clear diary if at all possible from the end of May, a) just in case I have to go off at short notice and b) so I can be office/home based at the end when I anticipate being big and uncomfortable (my job generally involves a combination of office work and driving around for meetings/visits elsewhere). As I don't like my job much, and can't imagine it being conducive to having a young child, I'm really, really hoping that I won't have to go back. DH is self employed though so it all depends on how business is doing at the point when my 12 months is up.

I'm currently keeping an open mind about childbirth options. It's so hard to know what to expect with your first. One thing I am sure of is I don't want a home birth. Thank you so much for sharing your lovely story orangebubbles - in an ideal world I'd love that to be me, but the truth is I am too scared of something going wrong and don't think I'd be able to relax. Ironically (perhaps) I think I'll feel much happier in the less familiar and more medicalised surrounds of the labour ward! I do like the idea of a waterbirth though, and do potentially have that option at the hospital I'm booked in with, but on the other hand, I'm thinking realistically that I might want/need an epidural and I don't think you can have both?

Back to the present and I've spent the morning sorting out my wardrobe into:

  1. Doesn't fit anymore or soon won't, and will be out of action for some time
  2. Will hopefully fit throughout or for most of pregnancy
  3. Won't fit during pregnancy but may want soon after baby comes, depending how quickly weight comes off.

Conclusion is - I have far too many clothes!! Don't think DH is too impressed by the three huge bags of category 1 that are now cluttering up the spare room whilst I work out where to stash them!

Knackered now! What's for lunch?

16+6

orangebubbles · 09/02/2013 13:41

Photographer we have pancake Sunday here! American style with either banana or blueberries and lots and lots of maple syrup!!! mmmm

'twas I that suggested a stat thread totally, thanks for sorting.

TotallyEggFlipped · 09/02/2013 13:56

orangebubbles I couldn't remember who it was and couldn't be arsed to read back, but I didn't want to take the credit for someone else's idea.

dinkystinky · 09/02/2013 14:12

Ama - those vacuum seal bags are brilliant for reducing a room full of clothes to something much more manageable to store! Its a great idea to keep an open mind for the birth - why not see how you get on and what you feel you need at the time. I was induced with DS1 and managed the first three hours with nothing - it was only when the bitch of a new midwife started going on about how it was sooooo much more painful than a natural labour and I would be there all night in labour like this and it could last days that I cracked and demanded an epidural - if I had had the lovely first midwife who attended me before shifts changed I very much doubt I would have needed to go down the epidural route. As it was ds1 was born 4 hours after I had the epidural anyway and was ready to come out for at least an hour before he was born. Long way of saying don't let any negative energy into your birthing space and do what feels right for you. And you are sadly right, you can't have a water birth and an epidural - but you can labour in water pressure epidural if that feels right for you.

Photographer lady and orange - we are going through a pancake phase here too - triggered by ds1 reading the enormous pancake at school. Am becoming quite proficient at making them though my flipping skills leave lots of room for improvement. Nutella and banana is a particular favourite.

Cotton sock - congrats on your baby clothes bargain. Great stuff!
