Happy 2013 one and all!

Evening all. Marie - hope DS is OK and you are all over the shock. Did they figure out what caused the fit?

BadmissM - we are in the new forest today for a weekend out of London and saw warnings on the road that snow is due. Hopefully as everyone knows its coming they will be prepared.

Marima on previous thread there was discussion about NT and a few said they wouldn't be doing the test.

Went to Fuerzabruta at the Roundhouse last night - a circus on acid with lots of loud music and drums - and I swear the bean was doing a haka to the drums!!

Just wanted to say bestest of best luck to BadMissM for results on Monday. I'm expecting my harmony test results imminently too so please pester the FMC to send mine through ASAP while you're there Wink Also, just noticed on another thread that you're a southerner living in Morecambe so we've obviously swapped lives as I'm from Lancaster (joined to Morecambe) but now living down south! Thought that was quite a funny coincidence. Hmm
Hi to everyone else and glad things are ticking along nicely for you all.

AmaDablam · 13/01/2013 08:09

MarieKL glad you hear your DS is OK, that must have been scary for you. Can I ask what first aid course you did and whether you would recommend it as I would like to do one before LO comes along too.

Just noticed a fine dusting of snow on top of the wheelie bins that must have fallen overnight. Like others I really hope it doesn't come to much as I have quite a bit of driving to do for work this week. I'm just really glad there's no chance of heavy snowfall at the time our babies are due and really feel for anyone that's due imminently, as a friend of mine is!

Hi All,
How crisp, frosty and lovely is it this morning? Anyone with snow?
Having a private NT scan on Tuesday as the baby was in the wrong poistion last Tuesday for the NHS one. Having it done at firstchoicebabyscan in Warrington. It looks like a terrace house from google street view, but it's one of the only sites that talks about the sonographers qualifications and experience.
I have resigned myself to weird/coloured discharge when I wipe throughout this pregnancy because of the fibroids, so a chance just to check Ribena is OK is always welcome.

DH and I actually spent all day in Mothercare and Babies R us having travel systems demonstrated to us. My god! My head was spinning at the end.
I decided that a lightweight frame was important to me, as was a reversible seating frame that you can put a car seat straight on. The one that impressed us the most was the Graco Evo in Mothercare - really easy to change etc. But I've since read that the car seats when they are in cars aren't great.
As we were walking around we kept a record of how many buggies went past. iCandy and Quinny's seemed to be by far and away the most popular. Has anyone else looked into this a bit more? I am very sad and have started constructing a spreadsheet with pro's & con's and prices etc........ Blush
Anyway I hope everyone is well and good luck to BadMissM tomorrow - I am sure you are not really 'bad' but lovely! Wink

paolocee · 13/01/2013 09:02

Yep, SuperShiv, we have around 3 feet of snow here - but then we do live in Northern Sweden. Smile

Guavasforbreakfast · 13/01/2013 11:02

Shiv I looked a bit at the Quinny/icandy/bugaboo end and was quite disappointed that despite the high price none of them actually lie flat, just sort of stay in that bucket shape and tip backwards. Ended up getting a M&P Urbo as it's quite compact and we live in the city centre, plus it lies completely flat. (And is on sale at the moment!) Then we may get a second hand all terrain one for trips out to the countryside.

VinegarDrinker · 13/01/2013 11:10

Shiv I don't know if anyone has said this, but if you can get to kiddicare in Peterborough it is well worth it. We were all set to spend quite a bit on an Oyster or a Bee but having spent ages playing with loads we ended up with a much cheaper Chicco Trio Living travel system which is lightweight and has umbrella fold while still having RF, lie flat and added carrycot options. Unusually for a travel system we still use it as our main buggy at 22 months, and it is hardly bigger than a Maclaren.

elliejjtiny · 13/01/2013 13:49

Arkady Of course you are welcome to stay as long as you like. And if you leave before you get another BFP you have to come on here and let us know.

Maria That must have been so scary. When I was in hospital with DS2 when he was a baby about half the ward was children who'd had a fit because of a temperature.

Can't remember who asked but we refused the nuchal scan/blood test as well. Just was well really as they are still trying to take my booking bloods without success.

I told my family on friday and it didn't go well, their loss. DH's family are really excited though.

Yesterday was DS3's 2nd birthday so we've mostly been eating a lot of jelly and cake. DH has gone to ASDA to get DS1 clothes in the next size up. He grew out of aged 3-4 6 months ago and now he needs 7-8. Hope he slows down soon! I'm trying to get the energy to start cooking a roast chicken for dinner.

Thinkingof4 · 13/01/2013 14:45

Supershiv There is a good website here
www.bestbuggy.co.uk/
which has lots of good independent advice on buggies, I used it when deciding on which double to buy when ds3 arrived.
It really does depend a lot on your lifestyle though ( city/ country/ public transport etc) so best to try out as many as you can.
Dusting of snow here, hoping there will not be much more as its not great for my commute!
Still only feeling v occasional movement from baby here but have midwife this week and she will hopefully have a listen in. I think I must have anterior placenta hence not feeling much, was the same with ds2. Certainly bump continuing to grow and grow!!

MarieKL · 13/01/2013 16:28

Shiv I did a buggy spreadsheet first time round too. So glad I don't have to make that decision again. My one tip is to consider the size of your little one, the petite shop assistant took one look at my husband and I, both of whom are tall, and immediately ruled out half the buggies as they may not last past 12 mths!

BadMissM I hope you get down to London tomorrow. We haven't had any snow yet, but I'm sure it's on it's way!

Flyingsprocket Thanks for the DVD link. May try and find a local class too but no idea when I'll find the time to get there!

AmaDablam I did the 2 day St John's Ambulance first aid course. It was a bit pricey and probably covered far more than I needed to know but I was considering becoming a childminder at the time and it meet the registergation standards. Having said that I know the money I spent went towards their work, the teaching was excellent, covering childhood illnesses to emergency first aid and when my DS choked at 9 mths I was able to dislodge the food so well worth but plenty of other options including sure start centres which often do basic ones free so do look around.

Thanks for all your well wishes for my DS. Looks like a viral infection caused his temperature to spike too quickly. The ambulance crew told my MIL I was the calmest mum they'd meet, but I think I must have been in shock as it all hit me the next day and I had to stop myself crying when I called work.

Hope the snow doesn't cause too many problems for everyone tomorrow.

photographerlady · 13/01/2013 17:10

Hello ladies. How was everyone's weekend? We just viewed and selected a house in Salisbury so moving out of London. Scared but excited I now have a few months to get my UK driving permit and take on the commute to London. I do not know the first thing about switching hospitals, I have my 16 week midwife appointment in a couple of weeks. Anyone know the best course to still get my 20 week scan even though I will be moving. Should I just tell them I'm switching hospitals or try and register at the new GP as soon as I can (before I move).

MightBeMad · 13/01/2013 17:20

Photo, most gps won't register you until you are resident in their area so you can call them but may find you need to wait at least until you have a signed contract/utility bill or something to prove your new address. In the meantime you can call the local midwife team and find out how to go about registering with them and getting your scan set up (unless you'll be 20 weeks before you move?). We moved last time around at 31 weeks.

CottonSock · 13/01/2013 17:20

Shiv, I spent a good few hours in John Lewis saturday trying out the buggy I have my eye on, chosen bashed on being a Which Best Buy - Uppababy Vista. think I will go with it, but thought the folding and unfolding could be easier! (it's also pretty large, but we don't use public transport at all). I was put of the Bugabee by totally unreasonable costs of everything, I mean baby foot muff £150!!! I don't mind spending for quality, but the base of the carry cot was a bit of plywood and the sales assistant admitted you pay £000's extra for the name.
The other things I ruled out on were a load of them were very heavy. I thought the Vista was until she showed me some of the others. A lot of people were looking at Icandy.
Such a difficult choice!!

AmaDablam · 13/01/2013 17:28

Thanks for the advice on first aid courses Marie, I have heard from others that St John's Ambulance is good and like you say, if parting with money it always feels slightly better if it's a charitable organisation! I think they may do a one day course in my area so will look into that.

Wow photographer you are so brave moving house whilst pg! I am balking even at the thought of moving bedroom/study furniture around and having a big clear out to make space for little one. I hope it all goes well for you and the transition of maternity care goes smoothly.

I've been browsing ebay over the weekend for maternity clothes bundles. I've never used it before so it's all new to me but I'm starting to get the bug! Not succeeded in getting anything get, but when I have lost out it makes me smile to think it may be one of you lovely ladies I'm bidding against!

dinkystinky · 13/01/2013 20:13

Having dusted off and washed (4 loads!) All my maternity wear I can safely say I am sorted for clothes throughout this pregnancy Ama. I did find some gems on eBay when pregnant with Ds2 and looking forward to ebaying this lot when the bean arrives. I did a subsidised St Johns first aid course through sure start when Ds1 was 5 months old and can highly recommend it too.

Ellie - sorry your family didn't react well. I hope they will come round and be supportive.

Photographer - I too am in awe at you moving in pregnancy. Do you have family near where you are moving to?

OP posts:
VinegarDrinker · 13/01/2013 20:22

I've dug out my maternity stuff from the attic today. Need to work out how much will fit as my maternity jeans appear to be a 12 and I am pretty sure I am nowhere near that at the moment....

flyingsprocket · 13/01/2013 21:01

Hi ladies- need a bit of hand holding. After a good scan on Friday, I started bleeding Saturday morning. Mild to moderate cramps followed. Of course it would happen at the weeksend so I've been through the out of hours GP process, she sent me to A&E who couldn't do anything expect refer me to the EPAU. Apparently they will call me before 8am to book a scan.

I was really worried but feel I have done all I can & worry won't change anything. I'm also hoping that the strong lil heartbeat we saw on Friday is still beating.

dinkystinky · 13/01/2013 21:06

Flying - am keeping everything crossed for you. Sending you big hugs and hope EPAU call you and see you in short order in the morning.

OP posts:
TotallyEggFlipped · 13/01/2013 21:06

flyingsprocket Sorry to hear you're having such a worrying time. I hope you get seen quickly tomorrow and everything is still ok.

Cutandstick · 13/01/2013 21:42

Best of luck for scan tomorrow flying everything crossed for you.

princessllama · 13/01/2013 22:09

flyingsprocket hold on, i hope you manage to get some sleep tonight and i hope they can reassure you first thing tomorrow.
i am totally bamboozled by the buggy situation, maclaren did me proud for dd and ds (until i left it outside nursery school and had it nicked) phil and ted was brill too because they were so close in age but sold it for a good price on ebay and anyway not v useful for 1.
for those that have done it-school run with car and new baby, is it worth getting a travel system so you can just slot the baby in without undoing clips and redoing etc? would have gone for maclaren xlr because they had a special car seat attachment but they have now discontinued the attachment annoyingly-it all seems so expensive, you really don't want to buy a dud
we didn't go for nuchal or any other trisomy testing either

marimama · 13/01/2013 23:31

flying good luck tomorrow! Thinking of you..

Feeling reassured by others skipping NT, too. Not making a totally crazy choice. :) last time i wanted it, but this time i just don't...

Re buggies, i live in america, and uppababy is actually a very local company for me. We got the vista for DS, love it and still use it now that he is tall and nearly 3. We live in the city and it's a bit heavy to carry upstairs, but it's super-maneuverable and has an amazing amount of basket space which is awesome for food shopping, bag-carrying, etc.

Uppababy is coming out with a car seat this spring (called mesa) that is supposed to fit vista with one-hand/one-click. I didn't have an infant seat adapter last time, but i definitely want it this time... I think with two it will make things easier. Also Vista has buggy board which i hope will be good enough for 3-yr-old transport. :) hopefully he won't need naps in buggy anymore by then??

Anyway, there is my little advertising/promotion for american company! ;)

marimama · 13/01/2013 23:34

Ah! One other thing that was nice about uppababy. We had a little problem with the frame after we bought it, and they just sent us a new frame for free, no questions. Sooo kind and helpful. Grin

wifey6 · 14/01/2013 08:10

flying...good luck today. Sorry to read you're having such a worrying time. Hope you managed to sleep.

Good luck to all having their scan or getting results today.

Great advice/info on buggies etc..we've decided on a buggy board for DS & also to use a sling for baby if DS needs his buggy. (I don't drive so we do clock up some miles in a week walking).
