New thread!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
EggsMichelle · 11/11/2012 23:08

In normal baby situations, they should not be wearing hats inside at all, just for outside. This ofcause does not apply in poorly/small/blown heating situations, the MW will recommend what to do then.

Started making my Xmas presents today, exciting projects now the house is completely in order, I don't have to worry about being ready for Shrimpy's arrival.

MaMaPo · 11/11/2012 23:22

Huh, so 'vest' means a completely different thing here! Right, I have loads of vests, but if they're meant to go underneath the garment that has long arms and legs (a onesie?) then I need to keep shopping.

Bit overly complicated, this baby lark, isn't it?

Secondsop · 11/11/2012 23:34

mamapo, yes it turns out that I have plenty of vests too.
I went from thinking I had no vests, to realising I have plenty, in a matter of minutes!

Thanks everyone for your help.

emily you asked a question about caesarians earlier. In my area you certainly can't just have one on request, but you can ask and see if they think it's medically indicated. If you've had one before then I think a preference for one might carry more weight as there may be risks involved in a vaginal birth. Which hospital are you in by the way? I have it in my head you're from Beckenham (from your profile or from the stats thread, i can't remember); I'm not far from there, will you be at Princess Royal?

emilyeggs · 12/11/2012 00:16

Yes I'm going to the princess royal, was thinking of the oasis centre but what with growth scans and big baby I might re think it all. This is my first so prob no c section for me then. Are you near?

StaceymReadyForNumber3 · 12/11/2012 00:22

Yep vests popper between the legs and can be l/sleeve, s/sleeve or sleeveless. A onsie/sleep suit/romper/baby grow is usually a long sleeve and long legged. They normally popper down the front/back and legs (for ease of nappy change). Usually baby wears a vest then a baby grow. (at other times of year baby grows can be short legged and footless but full legged ones are best at this time.

I tried explaining it all to DH earlier and definately got this look Hmm

Secondsop · 12/11/2012 00:33

Emily I live near Beckenham cemetery, the birkbeck station side not the elmers end side if you see what I mean. I won't be able to use the oasis birth centre what with the high blood pressure and the fact I'll definitely be induced at 38 weeks unless I happen to go into labour early, so it'll all be somewhat medicalised for me but I don't mind that. It's a bit of a trek to PRUH but it was that or Croydon, which can take even longer depending on the traffic plus when I went to the early pregnancy clinic there for scans, the facilities weren't as modern and fit-for-purpose as the PRUH. I also thought PRUH would be better for parking but they are both dreadful for that.

emilyeggs · 12/11/2012 00:38

I've heard good things about the PRUH so will look forward to hearing about your experience there. I've not looked around but think you can only see a DVD tour anyway

StaceymReadyForNumber3 · 12/11/2012 00:44

Ah second Croydon parking isn't too bad if u know the hospital Wink but tbh it's not my first choice and DEFINATELY wouldn't be if I didn't have the option of the birth centre. Having said that dd was born on labour ward there 8 years ago and we came out happy and healthy.

I live away from u lot though, between Croydon and Epsom.

I have had an hours sleep now awake with BH.

emilyeggs · 12/11/2012 00:52

stacey are you going/been to the PRUH aswell?

Secondsop · 12/11/2012 01:14

emily y I think the PRUH is DVD tour only, but I've been admitted to the labour ward before after a bleed at about 25 weeks (alarmingly a nurse took one look at me and said cheerily "hello, are you here for an induction?") :( So I've sort of had a sneak preview of one of the labour rooms (but not the post-natal ward). It was nice I thought - en suite shower room, plenty of space.

2blessed · 12/11/2012 01:47

Hello fellow s londoners, I'm in sydenham!
Had a lovely day today, met a friend for a roast in crystal palace and then came back and finished housework. Also tackled my ladygarden this evening - what a sight! And now I'm up!

emilyeggs · 12/11/2012 02:03

blessed are you also at the PRUH? Your just down the road from me

2blessed · 12/11/2012 02:11

No, I'm at st thomas'. Only recently moved here and not changed hospital. This may be a decision I come to regret....

StaceymReadyForNumber3 · 12/11/2012 02:58

Nope I had a choice of Croydon, st helier and east Surrey. And as the others were born at Croydon then I didn't see any point in switching!

blessed you can go to any hospital when in labour though so if you feel you can't get to st Thomas' go elsewhere. I don't know anything about the maternity there. Dd was under evalina children's hospital there when she was poorly and it was always top notch. But although it's the same site it's not in the same building so it may be different.

Walnut8 · 12/11/2012 04:43

mamapo are you Aussie then? Funny, because I had the same confusion re "vests", "sleepsuits"/"onesies" etc when I had DD in London. Before living in the UK, I only thought of a vest as a woolly thing or part of a three piece suit!

So we have decided on a Phil and Teds Navigator stroller with double kit. That will make three buggies altogether (we already have an Icandy buggy/pram/travel system plus a Mama and Papas stroller) .. and that's not counting the spares at my parents place and at inlaws. Ridiculous. Not sure whether to sell the Icandy. DD really loved it and to be honest the basinette is brilliant for a newborn. But it doesnt take a toddler seat.

EggsMichelle · 12/11/2012 06:56

The vest thing does back to dialect again, I'm sure I'm finding it too exciting! I was calling vests grows for ages until my DM corrected me, oops!

It must have been very boring in south London in march, or a lot of power cuts. Feels a bit lonely here in the East Midlands on my tod!

SpottyTeacakes · 12/11/2012 07:26

It doesn't help that the shops give them different names!

Long Sleeved Vest

Short Sleeved Vest

Sleeveless Vest

Sleepsuit or Babygrow the ones with built in mittens are the best

Romper

Indoors DS will be wearing a vest with a babygrow over the top. If it's cold then a cardi over the top (advice always was for them to wear one more layer than you are wearing?). I would never put a hat on them indoors, unless prem etc as others have said. You can always put a blanket over them and indoors they will be close to you anyway using your body heat.

WillYouDoTheFandango · 12/11/2012 07:37

Morning all hope the other members of the 3am club managed a bit of sleep last night. When my alarm went off at 7 I actually said you have got to be kidding me! Grin off to be useless at work! what else is new

JoJoB77 · 12/11/2012 08:40

Morning Smile

I'm feeling so weary today. I took DD to a soft play centre on Saturday and i feel like i was the one climbing up and down everthing. I'm aching all over. Doesn't help that DD prefers to climb up the slide rather than go down it Hmm

Am officially on maternity leave now so taking DD to a toddler group this morning then back for feet up.

I have my strep b swab tomoro so depending on the result of that depends on where i will be delivering. Hospital an hour away or mlu 10 mins away.

35 weeks today and very ready to meet baby now!

Hope everyone is well Smile

Clarella · 12/11/2012 08:47

Hi all, off lurking/ studying nov thread as been having definate niggles which i know could continue for a good couple of weeks - but i my self was born at 38 wks (me today!!!!!) So spooking myself a bit! Im definately getting stronger more painful bh and what nov lot call pootractions - apparently a contraction that is actually just needing a poo! But also dull lower back sche which comes and goes. Lo still wiggling happily though.

Major room moveabouts yesterday, put bedside cot up weve been given and trying to work out whether to put side all way over so matresses meet or just drop the side so theres a little low barrier between us - feels safer somehow. Anyone any thoughts? Its a brio bedside cot.

Mind you spent most of night wide awake thinking about what we still need to get as health visitor comes today - no idea what to expect there. Dh keeps referring to her as tye health officer as if shes some sort of stazi officer :/

Hoping you have good days today :) x

EggsMichelle · 12/11/2012 09:16

Wow Clarella 38wks, the closer you get the more scared I get!!!

There has been non stop rigging since 6am, I think he is struggling to find the space to get comfy!

Second antenatal class today on pain relief, and since I have not had Starbucks this week, I think I'll treat myself to carrot cake and a latte, mmm yummy!

Clarella · 12/11/2012 09:53

I am quite antsy today - mixture of curiosity, impatience, apprehension and an awareness we're still playing a game of building beating the baby! But its good and im getting really excited! i spent a lot of last night working out where things will get done - eg decided best place to nappy change (after reports from nct couple with baby boy and the nappy change attempts) bathroom floor with its cheap wipeable new vinyl as the ' nursery' has had to become a dressing room as weve run out of time/cash to do the spare bedroom and get wardrobes sorted! carpets due to come 4 days before due date, considering actually putting a bet on as to which will deliver first!

And ive decided that on my actual due date i will make/ write xmas cards out in order to fill the day Grin

Off to health officer proof the house now...

ellliebelle · 12/11/2012 09:55

willyou thanks for lavendar tip will pick some up :)

Im 34 weeks today and a bit scared now that ill actually be classed as term in 3 weeks

cherrypiew3 · 12/11/2012 10:22

Clarella 38 weeks wow it seems to have all come round really quick since this thread started.

Jojo I am 36 weeks today and also very ready to meet baby now.

Have the health visitor coming for a visit today never had this before normally don't see her until after the birth.

Cookiesandcoffee · 12/11/2012 10:29

clarella lots of pootractions here - that's so the perfect word for it amazing! 38 weeks eek how exciting/scary for you !

I was mega confused last time about what was what re baby clothes so don't worry ladies! Most shops call long sleeved vests a 'bodysuit* if that helps I've realised. I have a mix of short and long - i'm inexperienced with a winter baby. My family have always referred to 'babygrows' but everywhere calls them sleep suits now?! Footless sleep suits are rubbish for a newborn in my opinion/experience - especially where it's winter. Socks WILL fall off constantly.
I heard the no to a hat indoors, babies can't regulate their temp very well - one of the best bits of advice I got was to feel back of their necks to gauge their temperature, as their hands can feel cold especially at night. Shops are a nightmare at this time of year as well because they're r. Hot and outside is really cold.

Question - I have a 0-6 sleeping bag, when to use it? I feel as though swaddling/cellular blankets are more appropriate for a newborn ? I can't remember when I started last time?! But they made me less paranoid about blankets over head etc.
