I know i'm about 10 pages too late but just wanted to chip in on the Sleeping on Left Side or Right Side debate.

My undersatnding is there is some vein on the right side - the vena cava or something - that supplies the baby and if you sleep on that side when heavily PG (not now) you can block the blood flow. So in 3rd trimester you should sleep on your left.

i religiously slept on my left during last PG trimester 3 and ended up with a really wierd muscular problem - all stretched on one side and all tight on the other. even my right hand was affected - i got tendonitis cause everything had contracted (so i believe, my GP was dubious).

i mentioned the theory of the vena cava to the midwife and she looked at me like i was mad.

i will look into it with Dr Google

Teapig I love Bio Oil, the smell is really relaxing to me. I've had a pot for a few years, I have stretch marks on my hips and thighs and used it to lighten their appearance and thought it did a good job. I got a few on my bump last time, just by belly button, were tiny but sore. The Bio Oil helped relieve that stretching pain. I still use it on my middle, boobs, hip and thighs after a nice shower.

A close friend had never had a stretch mark in her life, I've had them since puberty, but her bump was really badly covered in stretch marks and no amount of lotion helped, her baby is 8 months and they are just starting to fade. Her mum didn't have them at all.

It's just luck of the draw. Decided to buy some more maternity jeans, over bump, failing miserably. Wanting a 20S [or Reg] bootcut [can't do skinny with my thighs and calves] but they are out of stock everywhere. 18 is just too small. I'm trying to bid on some on eBay and they are going for more than they are new. I get annoyed at Mothercare, Mamas and Papas and JoJo don't do anything larger than an 18. H&M are a little bit tight on me. Just going to live in the one pair I have got. I only wore my underbump for a little while, I found the were pushing uncomfortably on my belly and hips, certainly less hip pain now I've gone overbump.

Still lots of achey pains across my tummy. But no actual bump popping out. I can feel the fundus when lying down and it has moved up, but it's shifted all the extra weight up, so I've got an odd looking tummy. Can't remember the discomfort of the stretching like this last time.

yes Dr Google says there is, if i have got my maths right, a 0.0093 per cent increased chance of stillbirth if you sleep on your right.

if you want the link let me know - it sounds like just another thing to worry about!

JessieEssex · 30/10/2012 11:09

I didn't get any stretchmarks with my first pregnancy, and while I did (and do again now) smother my tummy in creams and oils, I'm sure it's genetic, as my mum (3 pregnancies) and sister (2) haven't got any. I'm not risking it though!

On the trousers topic, I bought some over the bump jeggings from New Look at the weekend - really really comfortable (and only 12.99!). I bought a Medium (I'm a 12/14) and they fit really well with no bagging.

18+2 xx

FlaminNoraImPregnantPanda · 30/10/2012 11:32

I just read in my baby book that you should get a special teddy type toy and sleep with it for the next few months. Then your scent becomes embedded in it so it comforts baby when baby arrives.

trying2bpos · 30/10/2012 11:33

Morning all, Off work again today as although DS much better in himself (thanks for all medicine advice I used all your tips!) he's developed a rash which means he can't go to nursery. It may be a reaction to the penicillin as I'm allergic but can't be sure. He was an absolute terror yesterday, terrible 2s come early or what so I wasn't looking forward to today but he's gone down for a nap now!

Anyway with regards to bump cream, I used a nice sanctuary one that someone bought for me and then one from boots (derma something in BIG pot) as well as some biooil. I was doing fine but then in last two weeks when bump got quick a bit bigger they all came- boo! So I think combination of genes and bump size are the main issues. But why not enjoy massaging your bump anyway and use the time to have a little chat or sing to it at the same time! Bit of extra bonding. I should start doing this too!

My bump seems to like chocolate biscuits, good job really!

FlaminNoraImPregnantPanda · 30/10/2012 11:36

I think my bump is going to be Swedish, despite both parents being British. Bump seems to have a total aversion to warmth. It's 5C here at the moment and I've had to turn all the heating off because bump can't stand it (normally I'm getting told off for putting it on too high). Plus bump has a liking for salmon and caviar.

JessieEssex · 30/10/2012 11:40

flaminNora I did that with DD1 - she has a little rabbit comforter and when she was born (didn't think to do it beforehand) I used to stuff it in my bra so it was all warm and slightly milky smelling (not as yuck as it sounds!) and then give it to her at bedtime. She still has it now at 26 months old (although I don't have to put it in my bra any more!)

jj247 · 30/10/2012 12:55

Joining in with the bumpcream debate, I'm a complete advocate of biooil, I've used it all over for about 4yrs and any scars have greatly reduced in size plus my skin got its spring back (I'm 40, so things had started to go a bit "tissue" like, which is scary, I don't feel that old!)

Just had a call from my haematologist to say he is starting me on twice daily low dose heparin injections from tomorrow, so I'll have to inject myself in the stomach twice a day Sad. I hate needles, but I know it is for DC1 benefit so I guess I'll have to man up! Hoping he'll explain quite how I'm going to do it once bump gets big and no "excess" skin is available to inject into though! if anyone else has any experience of injecting themselves it would be great to hear some reassurance...

miarosemum · 30/10/2012 13:17

Glad to hear everyone is well and 16 week appointments going well. I had mine today and heard heartbeat, so reassuring! She told me my nxt appointment is at 28 weeks as I miss the 24 week one as this is dc2. This seems like a long time to wait though?

miarosemum · 30/10/2012 13:30

17+1

JessieEssex · 30/10/2012 13:44

Just had my date through for 20 week scan - 14th Nov. Not too long to wait - yippee!

miarose I haven't got a midwife appt until 28 weeks either, although I was told to make a GP appt around 25 weeks. It seems to be different in every health authority. When I was pg with DD, I moved about 5 miles away at 16 weeks, but crossed authority boundaries. EVERYTHING was done differently. So strange...

BonaDea · 30/10/2012 14:17

jj247 - I'm diabetic so have to inject myself at least 5 times a day. I also hate needles (oh the irony) but certainly the ones I use are tiny - about 1/2 cm long as they just have to go in under your skin and no further. I've been firmly advised it is completely safe to keep injecting into your stomach as long as you can 'pinch an inch'. I'm also able to inject into thighs, bottom and even upper arms if needed - you should ask your doctor about this, because site rotation is important to ensure absorption of whatever it is your taking.

On creams: I'm using bio-oil. Who knows if it works but I guess it can't do any harm... I've also had a tub of the mama mio tummy cream which was lovely, so might ask Father Christmas for some more of that!

steph2412 · 30/10/2012 14:31

Hi all not posted for a while been really busy!i have my 16wk app on thursday and scan in 4 weeks yeah!will feel i can finally relax once i know all is ok with baby.i have a bump now which is strange as i am still 6lbs lighter than pre pg but weight must have gone from legs and bum!anyone else buying anythi.g yet?

FlaminNoraImPregnantPanda · 30/10/2012 15:41

I bought a pram last week. It's a bit early yet but we wanted a bugaboo chameleon (because we live in the wilderness and need one that can cope with mountains of snow) which costs around £1800 in this part of the world. There was one for sale on our equivalent of ebay for £400. They don't come up very often as they are not common here so we snapped it up as it's like new.

And I've bought wool and started knitting a Baptism shawl because it'll take me at least 9 months as I'm a rubbish knitter

BonaDea · 30/10/2012 16:25

Can't believe the price of Chameleons where you are - is it the moon? Grin That is also my pushchair of choice and looking forward to buying it after 20 week scan!

Knitting. Hmm.... Not something I can admit to being able to turn my hand to!

edinfirst · 30/10/2012 16:46

Ooooh flaminpanda can we be knitting chums? I bought loads of gorgeous wool and a beautiful blanket pattern but have given up after about 8 rows! There are about a zillion stitches per row and it takes so long to finish a row I get bored. Also I started it when I had MS so now I kind of associate it with feeling queasy? So close to just handing it over to my mum but hate to be defeated-maybe if you let me know how you're getting on with yours it will spur me on (worth a try?)

birdbrain17 · 30/10/2012 17:21

Oooh knitting I thought I was crazy so happy to hear other people also want to make stuff for their dc Smile I want to do a blanket but haven't got round to buying any wool yet, might get it before the winter hols and then I can stay nice an cosy indoors with something to do.

FlaminNoraImPregnantPanda · 30/10/2012 17:39

edin I have the same problem with boredom and knitting. I prefer crochet as it's much quicker to see results. Unfortunately the only pattern I could find suitable for a baptism shawl was a knitting one. I have the pattern on one side, a teach yourself knitting book on the other (because I really am rubbish) and youtube in the middle so I can watch films of how to do it properly :o

I set myself a target of 4 rows a day and do it while watching tv to keep my mind occupied, as I find it becomes fairly automatic once you get into your stride. I feel so exhausted at the moment that it helps me feel a bit useful. IE I've sat on the sofa all day but I haven't done bugger all, I've been working on something special for baby.

HavingALittleFaithBaby · 30/10/2012 18:16

I'm trying to knit too! emphasis on trying! but I'm a total novice so currently just trying to master stitches! :)

FlaminNoraImPregnantPanda · 30/10/2012 19:13

Once you can do knit and purl it's relatively easy HavingALittleFaithBaby. Everything else is just how you combine these 2. The patterns look like complicated gobbledygook, but that just because it's all abbreviations. Find a list of what they mean online and you're sorted.

HavingALittleFaithBaby · 30/10/2012 19:18

Depesite borrowing a book from the library, epic fail on the purl so far! Will YouTube the technique, the book is too vague once I unravel the mess I've made!

Trishstar · 30/10/2012 19:26

Steph I'm ordering our pram soon cos there is a great deal on it as a travel system so too good to miss! Going to order it next week or so then choose colour pack for it after 20 week scan on November 27th.

Xxx

Teapig · 30/10/2012 19:32

DH and I went to John Lewis at the weekend to look for household stuff and somehow ended up in the pram department.
It's a whole new world! We liked a couple of three wheelers as they seemed like they would be light and not too wide. This our first time though so any comments for or against that style would be very welcome.

I love the idea of knitting something for baby. Any tips on where to find straight forrward patterns for the absolute beginner?
