Sorry for the not very imaginative title. Noticed old thread was full and couldn't find a new one.

How long on average does the scan take?

Wirrawoo · 10/11/2012 19:41

Tried to be healthy and responsible today by getting an orange & passionfruit juice with 'extra vitamins' from M&S en route to Birmingham. Happily slurped it down in the car before noticing the notice on the bottle saying WARNING high levels of vitamin A, not recommended when pregnant. D'oh!! Figure if I skip today's pregnancy vitamin pill it should be fine. Blush

Picklep · 10/11/2012 20:47

littleb my scan took about 20-25 mins, but I did have to run to loo twice during scan as bladder was too full! I drank 2 pints an hour before as per the hospitals instructions, but my bladder was so full baby was squashed up by my ribs. Had to half empty twice ( which was difficult to measure) before baby was in normal position. Midwife praised my pelvic floor muscles! Will just have one large glass of water next time.

Another one here trying to eat healthier and ditch the white carbs, DH bought a juicer and we've been having all sorts of veg and fruit juices, feeling better for it. Now just need to get exercising and stop slobbing about!

Picklep · 10/11/2012 20:50

wirra I drink that stuff all the time and never thought to read warning signs!! Off to panic-search list of vit A rich foods that I must avoid!

Picklep · 10/11/2012 20:58

Just found this:
www.babycenter.com/0_vitamin-a-in-your-pregnancy-diet_675.bc

From what I can understand under the 'can you have too much vitamin A' question, the vitamin A you get from fruit and veg is in the form of carotenoids and you can have endless amounts of this, but then why would M&S put a warning on a fruit juice????

I wonder with the vit A things it's to do with the new EU legislation that is meant to be introduced mostly for vit supplements giving warnings etc it at be anything extra added to drinks and food stuff may need to carry a warning. Most likely they will cause no ill effects.

pickle thanks. Bit worried about drinking the right amount my letter says to drink a litre of water before leaving the house I will be desperate for the loo by the time I get to the hospital!

LittleBairn · 10/11/2012 21:41

That's not to say you should go over the recommended limits just that a tiny amount added to a drink isn't something that would worry me.

BeauticianNotMagician · 10/11/2012 21:59

Welcome boo

Ladies i didn't know we couldnt have vitamin A i thought it was only in the form of Liver as rich in it and high Vitamin A levels in creams.

I have been feeling really rough the past few days.I apologise to those having terrible ms as i've still had none. However,i have constipation and i keep getting quite sharp pains in my bump not sure if the two are connected.I also cant stop going to the loo at night and im so exhausted i thought these things were supposed to improve by now Sad

I had my flu jab today as well and have an achy arm.I am such a complete moaning minnie at the moment.

I have the Rage.Poor DP.I refused to go out with him tonight and instead made him feel bad about going out without me and made comment about all the flirting he can do.I am a rage filled, moaning, paranoid wreck.I sound marvellous don't i.

LittleBairn · 10/11/2012 22:15

beaut Vit A is safe just not in high quantities like Liver otherwise it would be dangerous to eat carrots and broccoli when pregnant.

I'm pretty much the same up all night peeing and still got fairly bad MS. The sharp pains is probably just ligament pains, I've been shocked how painful it can be just to sneeze!

BeauticianNotMagician · 10/11/2012 22:25

Thank you LittleB im not so much worried about the pains as just finding them uncomfortable.I wish i could curl up in bed all day.Although im sure we all feel like that on here.

Im trying to pass the time getting organised around the house. We have a small 3 bed as we are saving to buy but i think we may have to move just before baby arrives.

Bunnychan · 11/11/2012 09:02

beaut mega tmi moment but I've always suffered with constipation and the pains are realty sharp and quite low so im not surprised I'm suffering with it in pregnancy too. I think the pains around your bump are most probably connected, especially if they are towards the bottom x

Hi everyone,

I have just caught up on the last week and a bit's chatter.

Berri - sorry to hear about your placental tear. I hope your next scan brings good news. It must be very worrying. Thinking of you.

Jenpod - I'd been worrying hue you were doing. Sorry to hear you have been in and out of hospital with the hyperemisis. Fingers crossed things are improving now.

Milk - glad to see you back too. Enjoy your mini-break with non-man. I love Canterbury.

Wirra - congrats on the little boy and the reduced nuchsl measurement. Here's to a worry free pregnancy from here on in.

Beaut - have you tried eating lots of dried fruit? I've been constipated so I tried snacking on bags of dried apricots and it helped.

I've spent the last two weeks in antenstal test stress. I won't go into huge derail here, I've posted loads in the tests and choices section. Basically my NHS combined test gave me a terrifying 1:10 chance of Downs. I private combined test at the Fetal Medicine Centre said 1:6250 and a test of the baby's DNA said 1:10000. I want to trust the better figures but I can't get the NHS figure out of my mind, especially in the middle of the night.

In lighter news we were told it's a boy which is a big surprise after 2 DDs.

SevenElvesAndAReindeer · 11/11/2012 10:56

Re vitamin A. There are two types, retinol and carotin. Retinol is the one found in liver and some face creams, and should be avoided during pregnancy as it can cause brain damage to the baby. Carotin is the one found in fruit and veg which is perfectly harmless. I'd assume it was just an error by the marketing department.

I saw the John Lewis Xmas ad for the first time last night, and I cried too Blush

SevenElvesAndAReindeer · 11/11/2012 11:01

RT firstly congrats on your boy! I'd trust the fetal medicine centre odds much more than the NHS ones, though its understandable that its worrying you. How did they test the baby's DNA, did you have an amnio? If so I didn't think it could be wrong as its proper genetic testing.

RTchoke · 11/11/2012 11:14

Thanks Seven. I didn't have an amnio or CVS. The baby's DNA was measured using a very new non invasive technique called "Plasma cell-free DNA analysis" (brand name Harmony). It's still a screening test so not diagnostic but studies suggest it's more reliable than the Combined Test screening. I may still consider the CVS/amnio route if I cannot relax.

BeauticianNotMagician · 11/11/2012 17:20

Rtchoke Congrats on a boy.I am nervously excited about finding out the sex. Thanks for the advice apricots.I will get some tomorrow.

tasmaniandevilchaser · 11/11/2012 18:53

hello everyone, newbie here. I'm due 7th May, so I'm around 14+something now. I have lurked a bit but not really read through the thread but I'll just say-

berri hope that you are getting lots of rest (well as much as you can with a little one to look after) and it all works out ok.

RT the Fetal Medicine Centre sounds good, I am thinking of going there for a scan soon, would you recommend them?

I've just had pneumonia and I'm generally very stressed about this pg after 2 pg losses in the last year, so I could do with some reassurance. Though after 4 scans and listening in to the heartbeat this week at the GPs I should be able to relax a bit by now!!

oh and I'm glad I'm not the only one welling up at the John Lewis ad, I thought I was completely losing it Grin

LittleBairn · 11/11/2012 20:16

RT sounds like its been a stressful time I would take heart that the genetic test has given far better odds.
congratulations on the boy. Smile

tasmainia Welcome. Smile if more scans help you feel less worried then I'd go for them.

I've finally had our first doula interview today it went really well I'm very keen on her DH really liked her too. Best of all she has convinced DH that placenta encapsulation is a good idea! We've been arguing over it for 2 years I'm not even that bothered anymore but good to know I now have the option.

FlaminNoraImPregnantPanda · 11/11/2012 20:19

What is placenta encapsulation? Confused

LittleBairn · 11/11/2012 20:26

You dehydrate the placenta, ground it up and put it into tablet capsules then take one or two each day it can help with milk supply, some people claim it helps decrease PND and in general control hormones better.

peardrop2 · 11/11/2012 20:27

Beaut just wanted to quickly say that I've been suffering from constipation terribly. I was diagnosed with chronic constipation since week 3. I stuff myself with all sorts like apricots, porridge, water, raisins, prunes but very recently I discovered that a hot cross bun and a activia ( fig or prune yoghurt) gets things moving in the morning! I'm not really a fan of hot cross buns but they're my new best friend!! I think you can also buy whole meal ones too.

berri · 11/11/2012 22:38

Welcome tasmanian and thank you :)

RTchoke what a worrying time for you, I hope you can manage to put your mind at rest with the Fetal Medicine figures. I think the NHS ones can be way out sometimes which is very worrying. I too, like someone else upthread said, would trust the FMC ones much more seeing as they are more thorough and take more into account.

I've been constipated too Blush and obviously can't push because of this tear, so I've found prune juice to be the best thing for me. Worth a try as at least you can down a small glass quickly rather than having to munch on prunes etc which make me feel a bit gippy after my 5th or 6th, lol.
