New thread here ladies!

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
ellliebelle · 23/10/2012 13:27

prunella i know they cant insist i go to hospital but not sure i know enough about the issues to stand my ground and stay at home without feeling im putting baby at risk. i know one of the main problems can be a large baby and im not sure i can know if the diabetes has made the baby bigger than expected

Queenofsiburbia · 23/10/2012 13:27

X posted ellie, so sorry. Sounds like they've been really annoying. My community midwife is a grumpy unhelpful bitch lady so know what it feels like to expect people to be nice and then they are horrible, it's so unexpected.

Loads of luck with your appointment this afternoon Thanks

BTW - relating back to leakage of boobs, mine started spontaneously the another night when an owl was screeching. That was WIERD! Confused

SpottyTeacakes · 23/10/2012 13:34

ellie at my hospital they only induce if you have to go into medication and either way they will be giving you an additional growth scan(s). It's the circumference of the tummy they look at, if that's not in proportion with the rest of the measurements then it's because of the diabetes. Depending on what happens with your diabetes etc your baby might need to go into special care and/or have trouble regulating their sugar levels when born. I don't know much about gestational diabetes I'm afraid but you have plenty of time and people on here to talk to about it Smile

Clarella · 23/10/2012 13:36

Oh elliebelle, a worthy rant, so sorry hope it gets sorted out. They really don't need to be so horrid to you - so not helpful.

I would second phoning consultant's secretary at the hospital and explaining things utopian - badger away.

Congratulations prunella!! Wow how exciting! My leaking has calmed down and I'm not sure as bad as some experience - I will admit that i think id tried to emulate what we'd been told baby would do after bf session and after a friend said its a good idea to 'toughen nipples up' - it seemed to go crazy the next day - when I've let them be its calmed down!

Just had quite a major counselling session so feel rather drained. It was very honest and tough but very productive. It never ceases to amaze me how I am able to employ anti anxiety methods with the children I work with and advise close friends about the cycle of anxiety and how strategies both medical and psychological (incidently who are themselves a doctor with bipolar) works towards breaking the cycle and yet I succumb myself. I even found myself explaining how the anti anxiety work we did with the 2 pupils last year that ofsted did tracking on last week fed into their overall progress thus leaving the inspector judging their progress to be outstanding. One of the main things was always being ready to backtrack for a regression and revisiting previous strategies - doh! So toddling of to the library later for a particular book with it all in.

Clarella · 23/10/2012 13:44

Tbh though my main strategy is chocolate and desperate hw of nyc.

Queen we were warned that would happen - not specifically owls though, but crying noises etc. I wonder if whale music works?! I texted a friend about the neon yellowness and she suggested a new art work Hmm - I said cheese cake more like, and she responded with lemon curd at which point I felt like puking and know ill never be able to eat lemon curd again, which is annoying as DH's family are addicted to the stuff.

MyDaydream · 23/10/2012 14:34

utopian hope they manage to squeeze you in to see someone, hopefully they'll get a cancellation or fit you in somewhere if you call twice a day every day.

ellie I can't believe it took so long for someone to get back to you with that news. Sounds a very stressful day.
I went at my lady garden a while ago, DP has agreed to have another attempt before labour so I'll be going for whatever style he chooses (god help me). I think I might owe him big time if he does that for me though, or never talk to him again if he does something stupid.
No leakage here but my boobs have changed over the last few days, they feel emptier and the hard bit on the side has vanished. I think I need to go up another cup size but can't bear to shell out on another bra when there's so much else to pay for still. Wish I'd inherited the tiny boobs from my mum rather than my grandmas massive ones, it'd be a lot cheaper.
I failed my driving test and my driving instructor goes on an extended holiday later in the week so I'm finding a new one and it's hard. I've also looked online and the next available tests in my area are at the very beginning of December, so I have one more chance before baby and paying for the extra lessons is probably going to stretch us beyond affording a car but makes more sense than giving up and needing loads of lessons at a date in the future.

I also came home to a letter from my old employers saying they massively overpaid me and they'd like that back please so I'm off to CAB later in the week to discuss it with them to see if they can work something out for me because I just don't have the money to pay it back and it's really stressing me out. On paper we should be doing okay on his salary alone, but with huge demands coming from outside and him not getting paid properly it just feels stifling and I hate feeling dependant on him for money, I hate asking for it even though he gives it freely.

SpottyTeacakes · 23/10/2012 14:43

Oh MyDaydream sorry about your crappy day Sad I failed my first two test and it's horrible! At least you can fit another test in. I'm not finding driving easy with this bump so I have a lot of respect for you!

WerewolvesDoTheFandango · 23/10/2012 14:49

Ellie I've had nothing but trouble with the diabetes clinic since being diagnosed with GD. Am there again tomorrow. Have found the diabetes nurse very bossy and patronising!

My hospital do induce at 39 weeks regardless of whether you're on medication or not. If baby is growing fine then you can push to wait at 40 weeks (obvously as someone else said they can't make you be induced).

The obstetrician said in addition to risking a big baby, the placenta can start to fail earlier than in a non-GD lady (39-40 weeks vs 42-43 weeks) meaning that they don't like you to go over term.

In my area you attend diabetes clinic every 2 weeks, have a growth scan, wee dipped/blood pressure by obstetrician and midwife and then the diabetes consultant reviews your blood glucose diary (filled in from monitoring with a little meter). If your levels are too high they may look at adjusting diet or starting medication. HTH

Oh dear Daydream, all the best people passs second time Grin and that's shot about your former employer. Hope you get something sorted.

ellliebelle · 23/10/2012 14:49

daydream sounds like you have a stressful day too :( thats terrible about your old employers overpaying you, when was this? commiserations on failing your driving test, can you go on the list for a cancellation test? good luck finding a new instructor.

i have an appointment with the nurse at 3.40 to get a kit for testing blood glucose hoping she will give me some diet advice too. I have spent this afternoon researching problems related with gd and i have to say the only one that really worries me about homebirth is if the babies blood sugar drops low after birth and i cant really find any info on how i could monitor this at home. by all accounts feeding them straight away and regularly should prevent this but its still a worry. hope i can find some more info so im properly armed with facts/research when i see the consultant

WerewolvesDoTheFandango · 23/10/2012 14:49

My swear word self-filtered to shot!

OP posts:
MyDaydream · 23/10/2012 14:56

Spotty that was test three for me, although my last one was about 6 years ago. I'm a bit worried about my bump being too in the way in December to drive properly, but maybe Santa will get the elves to make me a lovely car for Christmas if I pass!

ellliebelle · 23/10/2012 14:58

crossed post werewolves thanks for the info on your diabetic clinic i have my first appointment on 8th novemeber but will be recorded glucose levels from tomorrow. am i right in thinking that if i manage to keep my levels normal through diet then the risks associated with gd will be reduced?

MyDaydream · 23/10/2012 15:05

Werewolves I handed my notice in August somewhat in a forced way that I wish I'd argued with now but at the time wasn't up to it, hence why I'm going to CAB to see if they can help.
ellie good luck at the clinic this aft.

Secondsop · 23/10/2012 15:27

mydaydream - what a tough day. Definitely go to the CAB about whether your employer can reclaim the overpayment now; if for example you reasonably relied on it being correct then you may have a decent case for resisting repayment of at least some of it.

elllie I have GD too. I too am surprised they took so long to tell you about the diagnosis. Re whether diet-control means the risk is reduced - ask at the clinic but i'd be a bit surprised if that were the case - at least with medication there's something keeping you in control whereas i find im a bit all over the place with diet-control at the moment. i would find it easier if i could just go on medication as I'm finding the range of things I can safely eat is starting to narrow, and it also seems so up and down - the same meal on different days gives different readings.

I think they check the baby's blood sugar after birth by pricking the baby's heel.

Barbeasty · 23/10/2012 15:51

Daydream sorry for all the bad news. But 6 years is a huge gap, and you might as well call it your first test.

Prunella congratulations on the barn. So exciting. And if you're going to the MLU I think, I don't think anything would shock them. They've attended home births in a yurt, so a lack of trimming is nothing.

Ellie hope you get it all sorted, and you get the homebirth you want.

Utopian hope you feel better, and get a new appointment sorted in time.

WerewolvesDoTheFandango · 23/10/2012 16:03

Emily If you manage your levels well then the baby won't be used to high blood sugar levels, shouldn't gain extra weight (mine's bang on the 50th centile) and should hopefully be okay after birth (i.e. shouldn't have a hypo due to excess insulin). But I think it doesn't matter if they're dietary controlled or medication controlled, it just needs to be controlled. I am not an expert though and am largely making it up as I go along, feel free to join me! Grin There is a definite perk though - extra scans, they're lovely and so much clearer now they are big!

Mine are starting to get worse now too Second, how many weeks are you? I'm 31+3 and today have had to take Cheerios off the menu Sad, full-time porridge it is.

StaceymReadyForNumber3 · 23/10/2012 16:11

Urgh we're skint. I've not been able to work due to being majourly uncomfy and sick. But if I don't work I don't get paid. Have had to ask my patents for a loan. Waiting to hear back from them. Savings are gone. No maternity leave for me!

AlisonDB · 23/10/2012 16:52

Daydream, sorry you didn't pass, I failed mine 4 times, then moved up Holland and haven't yet had the nerve to take lessons here, I think it's my biggest regret do don't give up! ;-)

There was a bit of discussion on our cervix and how it should feel,
On a thread in the pregnancy bit,
One of the ladies suggested taking (or even inserting near the cervix) Evening primrose oil tablets, to help soften the cervix,
Have any of you heard this before?
I'm certainly going to give it a go, I'm probably being induced as they think the baby is small, I have a growth scan on Thursday so will find out more then, but I hope that if my cervix is soft when I'm induced it won't be a long labour or having lots of faffing around before labour actually kicks off.
The way i have managed my lady garden is to do it standing infront of a full length mirror, and going very slowly with a razor, the thought of waxing down there makes me feel ill!

itsMYNutella · 23/10/2012 17:14

For those with GD - there is a recipe section here on the site with GD recipes and also many GD threads, might be worth a squiz. My EXDP was a wanker diabetic; low carb, lots of veggies and meat seemed to work well for him and kept his levels even and low.
Fingers crossed for you ladies!!! x

SpottyTeacakes · 23/10/2012 17:31

We're poor too dp is due about £1000 over time...

I've suddenly come over really tired so much so I don't think I can move but I need to go check the shepherds pie.....

Dd and I fell asleep on the sofa earlier I managed to rouse us before it went over half an hour though!

Going to ask dp to Hoover the stairs later, he said he'd do all the hoovering for me but I don't think he realises that it needs doing more than every other week Hmm (I Hoover three times a week and sometimes I think that's not enough?)

That's one bonus (!) of having type one diabetes, if I want a chocolate bar I just give myself more insulin Grin

Secondsop · 23/10/2012 17:44

werewolves I'm 32+5. My levels were fine yesterday but then I was unwell. Today things are creeping up again. I haven't even tried Cheerios, as porridge sends me too high in the mornings now. I am going to need medication if this continues - we'll see at my next appointment next week. The baby doesn't seem to be getting too massive though - his head and tummy at the 29 week scan were on the 95th centime but at 32 weeks they'd dropped down to more like 75%.

All this talk of feeling cervixes is freaking me out a bit. I'm not really up for having a feel of mine...

I'm also not going to get any waxing done. i tend to get ingrown hair bumps whenever I have it done, which are worse (for me) than having the hair itself.

AlisonDB · 23/10/2012 17:45

Haha Spotty,
That did make me laugh, I'm so glad my DH is not the only one that thinks household chores are a monthly occurence,
I asked him if he would Hoover and his response was
"Why? I did that the other week!" (Meaning about 10 days ago, I have hoovered in the meantime but don't say anything about it)
Also asked him to clean the loos which he replied " I did that yesterday"
Mmmmm yeah, love its a daily job!!

Also I think I'm going to start commenting on every household chore I do, and end the comment with "for you"
As my DH says every time he does a chore - "Love, I've done the dishes, for you"
And he actually stands and waits for me to say "Thank you!!!"

Secondsop · 23/10/2012 17:46

nutella ill have a look at the recipe section. I could actually do a low carb diet no problem at all, and would find that perfectly manageable; the difficulty is that I've been told I have to have a portion of carbs at each meal.

StaceymReadyForNumber3 · 23/10/2012 17:52

spotty that sucks. We've worked out we won't be able to afford to live here much longer :(

SpottyTeacakes · 23/10/2012 17:56

That's a shame stacey I'm sure you will find somewhere you love just as much as where you are now.

seconds remember a portion really isn't much at all just the size of your fist. Porridge is a bad one for breakfast lots of us find, which is weird. Have you tried eating breakfast later? You have a surge of hormones in the morning which can really effect your sugar levels
