interwebmum · 09/10/2012 18:22

Thanks for the link PurplePidjin! I'll go and check that out now.Grin

StaceymReadyForNumber3 · 09/10/2012 18:27

I've bought a bf coverup thingy as I thought it would surely be cheaper than buying lots of breastfeeding tops, and I don't want to have to be too limited in what I can wear out the house when bfing.

Also had the idea of layering tops, so pull one top up and 1 down and this shouldn't show off too much flabby tummy skin.

I was planning to live in wrap dresses for breast feeding - I have a couple already, plus I sew so am hoping to be able to make a couple once I start maternity leave.

Went to the diabetic clinic for the first time today and got the finger-pricky thing. I was there about an hour and 10 mins after lunch and my blood sugar was 5.0 which I was pleased with. Apparently the cut off for GD for the glucose test is 7.8 and I was 7.9 :(

Found some of the dietary advice really surprising. Eg I thought a baked potato was about the most fast-release carb you could eat but the dietician said they were ok. And she also said that white rice was as good as brown.

Secondsop · 09/10/2012 18:34

Oh dear wrong emoticon, I of course meant :(

Secondsop · 09/10/2012 18:35

GAAH! I am unable to do a sad smiley on my phone! I am NOT smiley about just being on the border of GD! throws phone at wall

SpottyTeacakes · 09/10/2012 18:45

Secondsop it is showing a sad smiley Grin 5.0 is a really good reading Smile what's the next step for you then? Just watch your diet and keep testing?

Secondsop · 09/10/2012 18:49

That's so weird, it's coming up as a happy smiley on my phone! Ah well.

Next step is to follow the dietary advice and test my blood an hour after every meal, and do one fasting blood test a week. The nurse looked at my 29 week scan report and the baby's head and tummy are in the 95th percentile - eek.

SpottyTeacakes · 09/10/2012 18:54

I think they only worry if it's just the tummy that's really big. My level just now was 2.8 Confused

Secondsop · 09/10/2012 19:00

2.8 seems low - I was told not to let mine go below 3.5! Y, she did say that as the head and tummy were both big I could just be having a big baby anyway.

SpottyTeacakes · 09/10/2012 19:03

Yeah it is low I must have messed up because I've already had dinner followed by a biscuit!

Secondsop · 09/10/2012 19:18

I did find it slightly odd that the advice didn't seem particularly tailored to the fact that as I have a high BMI, the portion sizes of the "good" food might need to be rethought to make sure I have enough calories. I'm no dietician but I would have thought the "pack of cards size piece of protein" etc might not be enough. I also thought that some of the advice didn't seem particularly up to date eg she said vegetables made no difference at all to your blood sugar but I thought some like peas and sweet corn were quite carby.

SpottyTeacakes · 09/10/2012 19:26

Well personally I would never factor in the carbs of veg or cheese into what I'm eating because it's not enough to warrant extra insulin. I also don't see why you can't eat as much protein as you like as long as its not fried bacon!

Secondsop · 09/10/2012 19:39

Thanks Spotty. Am having brown rice and veg and tuna for dinner - will let you know how it goes!

minipie · 09/10/2012 19:46

Ooh, thanks for the mention of New Look nursing vests Honey! I have been looking for these. H&M used to do a 2pack for £14.99, but it has disappeared and all the others seem to be £12+ for one vest. So the New Look ones at £7.99 are definitely the cheapest I've seen. link here in case anyone wants it.

I don't really have any button up or wrap tops, in fact most of my tops are high necked t shirts, so my plan was to buy strappy vests (ideally ones which unclip like the New Look ones) and wear those under my normal tops. That way only the boob is exposed and that will be covered by baby's head/muslin etc.

Clarella · 09/10/2012 20:08

Oooo ill be checking those out :)

Raining babies around me - bil and future sil surprised us all a few weeks ago announcing they were expecting ( got engaged much earlier in year) - it was a surprise as they've not been together long and she's quite young ie plenty of time to enjoy married life for a bit iykwim but apparently been trying for a year! Anyway, they found out they're expecting a boy in Feb so blueberry has a little cousin to mess on with :) have to say I'm going to have to try to get her to speak now we're properly related - she never says a word to me dunno if shy (im ten years older) but id be surprised cos she's also a primary teacher in quite a rough school (bil is too). Unbeknown to us it must have been hard to hear when we were pregnant as they'd had a mc but then literally must have got the bpf a week after we told them.

I'm also awaiting old best school pal popping (40+1), have another friend who's 22 wks,one who's 37 wks, and am excitedly waiting to hear very close friend who has been struggling ttc (her mum did and sis was one of trial clomid babies in.80's so was prepared for a struggle) who texted that she had 'news .....' !

So the several bottles of bio oil I've been given (and don't use - I'm still on one from last year) may well have good homes to go to!

Best expectant mum pres BTW has been dvd of 'bridesmaids' to keep the 'love making juices' going during early labour ..... ;) never know, he might pop out as I pmsl.

WillYouDoTheFandango · 09/10/2012 20:59

secondsop glad to hear your first appt went better than mine Grin off to get scanned tomorrow so we'll see if I'm carrying a little beast! Hope not, I'm only little! My levels are still perfect if not a little on the low side, I'm starting to think they've mixed my sample up with someone else's. this hospital do have form, they lost my 16 week bloods twice before testing the third lot!

WillYouDoTheFandango · 09/10/2012 21:00

MyDaydream · 09/10/2012 21:11

strawberry I love the bake off, so sad it's over next week. I didn't have a DP to send out so watched it with a bowl of angel delight instead!

JoJoB77 · 09/10/2012 21:12

Evening Smile

Thanks for your advice ladies re possible UTI. I'm still feeling a bit off and had a dull ache in my back all day Confused. I will ring the doctors surgery tomorro to see if they've had the results of my urine sample & see what comes of that.

Re clothes, i have a stash of clothes from having DD which i've fished out for another wearing. I can second H&M, esp for tops for feeding, very comfy and reasinably priced.

I'm going baby shopping tomorro Grin

WillYouDoTheFandango · 09/10/2012 21:12

Gestational diabetes I'm afraid strawberry I have to enjoy cake vicariously through Mary berry while eating a nice piece of malt loaf which I love

StrawberrytallCAKE · 09/10/2012 21:17

I will gladly eat cake on your behalf until you can eat cake again!

ellliebelle · 09/10/2012 21:23
