That's good to know kellestar -Frome and Trowbridge definitely convenient for me! I haven't bought anything for baby yet but once the 20 week scan is done I will go on a shopping spree. Trying to get as much of it as I can second hand.

Missmuffet28 · 14/10/2012 17:30

Ooh Glastonbury not too far away from me i'll have to consult my mate google I'm gonna sound like a right noob but I have no idea what nct is hehe, little out of touch you could say! Thanks for info though!

JaquelineHyde · 14/10/2012 21:17

Evening, just a very quick post to wave hello to everyone and hope you are all getting on ok?

We moved into our new house yesterday and I love it. Unfortunately though only my eldest (7) has been allocated a school place so the younger two (6 &5) are going to be have to be home schooled. Lack of primary places is the only down side to my lovely new town, so never mind.

Will catch up properly with you all soon when I have my internet back and I'm not having to steal it from the local church Grin !!

aufaniae · 14/10/2012 22:17

Jaqueline, congratulations on your move and welcome! :)

Hope you're all settling in well, and enjoying your new house :) How do you feel about the home education?

Still weeks off completing with ours I fear. They keep coming up with new things they want us to provide indemnity for. Either my old solicitor was rubbish when I bought my flat a decade ago or the laws have changed loads!

shomes · 15/10/2012 07:08

So glad to have news mamais ok, hope all stays that way.

I have heartbeat appointment on fri so nervous about that and counting down the days until half term when I don't have to get up to do the school run everyday! Hope everyone else is well. X

Missmuffet28 · 15/10/2012 07:37

Ooh half term is close!! You just made my Monday morning shomes I'd forgotten it wasn't far away!! Good luck with your appt on fri too this week will almost certainly drag I guess but come thurs night it'll feel like it flew by!

Hope everyone has a great Monday if Mondays can be great?! Even though its dark damp and dingy outside today :(

leluella · 15/10/2012 11:00

Hi

I was wondering if any of you ladies can offer and advice on travelling long haul when preganant. I've been offered an amazing opportunity at work to go to our Perth office for 3 weeks in January. I've been waiting to get a trip down there for the last 2 years and typically it comes now!! I'll be approx 28 weeks flying out and 31 weeks flying back. I think the airlines allow travel at this stage as long as you have a doctors certificate.

I still haven't told my work that I'm pregnant which obviously I will have to do very soon but don't want them to jump the gun and rule me out for the trip before I've done my research. Has anyone travelled long haul at around 30 weeks before? I will be in business class so comfort should be OK.

MrsJohnDeere · 15/10/2012 11:11

leluella I personally wouldn't. By that stage with both previous pregnancies I could barely sit comfortably still for 5 minutes at home, let alone in an aircraft seat, even if in business/first. I would consider short-haul at a push but nothing over 2 hours.

BonaDea · 15/10/2012 11:30

mama - fantastic news and hang on in there!

leluella - what a dilemna. Sods law, isn't it? To be honest - having never been pregnant before and therefore not really having any idea what to expect by that stage - I would probably not go on a work trip so far away at that stage. Apart from the comfort factor on the plane, I guess you just don't know how you'll feel physically and emotionally by that point and work trips are notoriously hard and tiring...

We are looking at a 'long haul' trip in December, but probably only an 8-10 hour flight (as opposed to the nigh-on 24 it take to get to Oz) and I'll be with DH so at least would have someone with me to literally hold my hand and look after me.

If you decide to go, good luck!
If not, be sure to tell work that you absolutely, positively do want to go at some point and assume that given you'll be missing out this time means you'll be first on the list next time (mind you, possible with LO to look after? - maybe you should take your chance now!!).

Missmuffet28 · 15/10/2012 12:46

Got my results back today
NT measured 1.6

I'm 28 so risk is 1:1045
Adjusted to 1:20895 after bloods

I'm assuming as I got them over a week later they are good do they sound about right?

kellestar · 15/10/2012 15:12

leluella it is a rare opportunity to go to Aus, will you be expected to work fully during the three weeks you are there, or have they fitted in a little leisure time. Would your work insurance cover you if you went into labour while you were there?

Knowing what I know now, I wouldn't do it, personally I had awful SPD and would find it agony walking/sitting anyway, DH whisked me away for a week in devon around that time, we were back after the second night as sleeping on a strange bed was awful.

However a close friend regularly flew to Tanzania throughout her pregnancy and was only just allowed on her return flight to the UK to give birth, she was fine and coped well, I think a 8-10 hour flight with 14 hours driving to where they are based.

missmuffet those risks sound fine to me.

IfAtFirstUDontSucceed · 15/10/2012 16:55

Hi ladies, haven't been on or a while, so there's been so much to catch up on. Lovely to hear about Mama's little 'un hanging in there - what a fighter they both are :)

I've been suffering with a yucky cold over the weekend, and it took all my will power not to reach for the beechams and just have a hot lemon and water instead. The worst part of it was the sore throat/cough that would make me wretch then throw up - pleasant.

Have just been to my 16 week midwife apt and all is well, bloods are all fine and got a listen to baby's heartbeat. She said that she guarantees that I will begin to feel movement now that she's mentioned it, I just didn't notice it Hmm

Hope you're all well x

16+0 (although MW said I was 16+2????)

wishfulthinking1 · 15/10/2012 17:36

Headache... Headache...headache....
That is all!!

Just checking in (and complaining about my headache, obviously!!)
Hope you're all well,
Xxxx
15+1

Knittingnovice · 15/10/2012 17:57

So lovely to hear that mama baby is hanging in there.

Finally tomorrow is my scan and we can confirm that there is a baby in there. Although dd is now telling everyone. Met up with a friend from when i had ds on Saturday, came back from the toilet she said 'have you got something to share?' I had to 'fess up. Se was amazed I had kept it quiet for so long!!

Will be back tomorrow

birdbrain17 · 15/10/2012 21:15

mama I hope that you are reading all our messages! I had a friend who went into labour early before 20 weeks, her baby is still in hospital but doing well so keep praying and hoping for the best!

Has anyone been for their '16 week' check up yet? I have mine on Wednesday (even thought I'm not 16 till next week) and I'm just wondering if they do any blood tests, I already had blood taken at booking in appointment and for downs test...Thanks

Ollibobs · 15/10/2012 21:40

Hi everyone! Apologies in advance For the me, me, me post....
Had my scan on Friday and it was amazing! The baby was perfectly still while they did the nuchal (1.7) and then it started to wave at us before rolling over and mooning us! I just couldn't believe there was a real baby in there finally!
Just waiting for the bloods now. Speaking of which, had a call from the midwife though and it turns out that despite having a cat for the majority of my life, I'm not immune to toxoplasmosis. I was so worried about it and thought the test would make me feel better (assumed I was immune! Hmm) but no such luck. Are any other cat lovers worried about this? Or am I just paranoid?
Also, how much weight have people gained? I'm only 12+5 and gained 8lbs already! I'm scared I'm going to balloon! My friend who's 17 weeks hasn't gained a pound! I'm really scared I'm gaining too much weight. The thing is, I'm always hungry!

chocoloco12 · 15/10/2012 21:54

mama so pleased bubba takes after you!

Had rescan today after heavy bleed last week and baby doing well, was a little fidget bum!

2nd that with the headache wishful feel like I've had one non stop for over a week!!

will catch up soon when got more time, hope everyone is all good!

13+4

bunnygirl80 · 15/10/2012 22:32

luella I'm flying Oz to the UK and back next month, so I'll only be 20weeks on the way there, and 23 on the way back. That's really my limit for how late I'd fly such a long distance, but we're going economy and with a toddler! If you agreed to it now could you cancel closer to the time if you don't feel up to it? I felt fine at 28weeks pg last time, but lots of other people are suffering with SPD etc by that point, and there's no way of knowing how you'd be.

birdbrain I had my 16 week appt last week, at 14 weeks Grin No bloods taken, I think you'd only need them if there was a problem with any from booking in. I'm not due any more bloods until 28 weeks, but it might be a slightly different system over here.

ollibobs I've gained about 9lbs and I'm 15 weeks. I'd gained a lot more than that by this stage in my last pg, so I think increased ms has helped me out this time. I don't over eat, and I exercise regularly, so I think my body just goes into fat storage mode when I'm pg. I got quite depressed about it last time, but now I'm not so bothered because I'd lost it all by the time DS was 3 months old. A lot of my weight turned out to be fluid retention, so I gained 27kgs, and lost 20 of it within two weeks of giving birth as I deflated! So there was only 7kgs of actual baby weight to lose.

Thankfully the poo and vomitfest we had over the weekend seems to have subsided. I'm just very paranoid that I'll catch it, and every little wave of nausea I have has me wondering if its just ms or if its the start of the bug

MumofWombat · 16/10/2012 02:18

Bunnygirl, we had a similar double vomiting episode here a few weeks back, looking back it was actually quite comical with my DH having to deal with all the clean up....
Leluella, at least in business class you'll have plenty of room! Last time I travelled Perth/UK long haul but in economy and I have to admit it wasn't much fun. But if you do go and want to meet up with a local let me know!

steph2412 · 16/10/2012 07:17

Morning all, hope every one is well ive lost 7lbs in total since getting pg which im happy about as i am a size 14-16. even though ive lost the weight its come off my legs and bum as tum is def getting bigger!to anyone whos had 16week app does midwife just look for heartbeat or do u have to ask?14 weeks today

SneezySnatcher · 16/10/2012 07:30

Hello everyone. Hope mama and baby are still well. I've got my 16 week appointment tomorrow so I'm looking forward to that - it seems like an age between 12 and 20 week scans, so at least it'll break the wait up a bit!

Teapig · 16/10/2012 07:49

Congratulations on your scan Ollibobs! On toxoplasmosis I've had cats for most of my life, have two now, and wasn't really worried about this as I thought the risk was only from changing cat litter. Am I missing something?

Good luck with your scan today knitting, keep us posted.

I have a question about MW appointments. I have my next MW appointment at 19 weeks, well 18+6, but that seems quite late. We fixed this at my booking in appointment and my scan put me further along so I'm thinking I need to move it forward. Is there a timing issue with this appointment? Should it be at 16 weeks or is it just any time before 20 week scan?

aufaniae · 16/10/2012 08:41

Ollibobs I would definitely not change any cat litter! (Perhaps your cats go outside anyway?)

I found this online.

"Pregnant women need to be aware that toxoplasmosis (TOX-so-plaz-MO-sis) can cause problems with pregnancy, including abortion. Toxoplasmosis is an infection caused by a parasite called Toxoplasma gondii. This parasite is carried by cats and is passed in their feces (stool). However, people are more likely to get toxoplasmosis from eating undercooked meat or gardening than from contact with pet cats. By following simple safety tips, pregnant women can reduce the risk of getting toxoplasmosis from cats.

-If you own a cat, have a non-pregnant person change the litter box every day. If there is no one else to change the litter box, wear gloves and wash hands with soap and running water after changing the litter.

  • Risk may be reduced if the litter box is changed every day.
  • Keep cats indoors.
  • Avoid adopting or handling stray cats.
  • Feed cats only canned or dried commercial cat food, never undercooked or raw meat.
  • Do not bring a new cat into your house that might have been an outdoor cat or might have been fed raw meat."

Personally I'm not sure about the advice about keeping your cats inside if they don't currently use litter trays. If they usually toilet outside, then surely introducing a litter tray to the household increases the risk?!

aufaniae · 16/10/2012 08:45

Looks like toxoplasmosis is rare but something we should all be aware of.
The NHS says this:

" Preventing toxoplasmosis

The advice outlined below may help to reduce your risk of developing a toxoplasmosis infection.

  • Wear gloves when gardening, particularly when handling soil - also, wash your hands thoroughly afterwards with soap and hot water.
  • Do not eat raw or undercooked meat - particularly lamb, pork and venison, including any ready-prepared chilled meals. Cook all red meat until no trace of pinkness remains and the juices run clear. Do not taste meat before it is fully cooked. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling raw meat.
  • Wash all kitchenware thoroughly after preparing raw meat.
  • Always wash fruit and vegetables before cooking and eating - this includes ready-prepared salads.
  • Avoid drinking unpasteurised goats' milk or eating products that are made from it.
  • Do not handle or adopt stray cats.
  • Avoid cat faeces in cat litter or soil - wear gloves if you are changing a cat?s litter tray and wash your hands thoroughly afterwards. If you are pregnant or immune deficient, ask someone else to change it for you.
  • Feed your cat dried or canned cat food rather than raw meat.
  • It is important that pregnant women and those with a weakened immune system follow this advice to avoid becoming infected.
  • Pregnant women should avoid contact with sheep and newborn lambs during the lambing season because there is a small risk that an infected sheep or lamb could pass the infection on at this time." From this page

"The risk of getting toxoplasmosis when you?re pregnant is very low. A 2008 study showed that, in nonimmune women (those who haven't had the infection before), about five per thousand may get a toxoplasma infection, with a 10-100% risk of transmission to the baby. One study suggested that, in the UK, about three in every 100,000 babies are born with congenital toxoplasmosis. Congenital means present from birth." From this page

I love cats btw. DP is really not keen. He sees them simply as killers of birds and guinea pigs (his guinea pig to be specific Sad). He prefers dogs (and guinea pigs). I'm working on him! :) I can't imagine never living with cats again.
