Thanks for the feedback on long haul travel MrsJohn, BonaDea, Kellestar, MumofWombat and Bunnygirl all very useful. I've just told my boss and he was really cool and asked if I'll still be able to go to Aus to which I said yes subject to no complications and doctors permission. He also suggested I could go for less than the planned 3 weeks if I wanted to which was really nice of him, its was such as relief to tell him! I've had a good think about it and done a fair bit of internet research and think it should be OK. If anyone has similar plans there's an interesting post on an mumsnet forum from a female pilot that swayed me. So MumofWombat I might just take you up on that offer of a meet-up!

BonaDea · 16/10/2012 09:41

leluella - that's great your boss was so supportive and it sounds like you can wait and see how you are to a certain extent. Woo hoo! I was busy arranging with my friend in Sydney last night to visit them this time next year when I'm on mat leave. Figured it is a pretty good time to go (you'll see me posting about long haul travel with a baby next year!).

On toxoplasmosis, I read up quite a bit when I got pg as we have two cats. The risk is from faeces, so provided you are very careful when changing litter and WEAR GLOVES when gardening, you'll be fine. Our cats don't even have a litter tray, they exclusively go outside, and just have to cross their legs / do a mercy dash when it rains.

ALSO, most people who have had cats for a number of years are actually immune and will pass that immunity on to the baby. The symptoms if you catch it afresh are flu like I understand, and you can be tested for it. Having read about it, and having been around cats forever, I basically assumed my risks were low to non-existent.

aufanaie My DH was not really anti-cats but had never had any pets growing up and was not really keen. I just went ahead and got two 8 week old kittens about 5 years ago and seriously you would not believe the man hasn't always had cats in his life. He loves them to bits. Mind you, when I got the kittens we weren't living together yet so it really was my choice (and maybe a bit of a gamble for me if he'd hated them!) but it seemed to work out. I think it sounds like he's had a bad experience and just needs to be brought round by a lovely, friendly, snuggly, real life cat.

FlaminNoraImPregnantPanda · 16/10/2012 09:42

Hello everyone, can I join your thread? I'm due on the 30th April although I still don't believe I'm pregnant.

aufaniae · 16/10/2012 09:52

Welcome Panda! Lovely to see you here Grin Grin

Caladria · 16/10/2012 10:14

Hello Panda. Glad to see you're an April person.

aufaniae · 16/10/2012 11:18

BonaDea I'm hoping that DP would be charmed by a nice cat. MIL used to have a cat, but she had a dog also and the cat used to slink about looking distinctly pissed off most of the time, and he wasn't very affectionate either, so not a great advert for "lovely, friendly, snuggly" cats.

He thinks cats just use us as heat-bags to sit on and as food-givers, and actually hold humans in distain. I've explained that when if we get a cat he can't talk about the cat like that, as they're sensitive creature and it'll pick up on the tone, but I'm not sure he believes me!

I'm up for getting a dog for the DCs - even though I'm not really a dog person - as I think it'll be good for them, but I can't imagine family life without a cat or two!

Where we live now we can't have pets, but moving soon Grin

Will wait till bump has been out in the world for a while though ...

HaveALittleFaith · 16/10/2012 11:21

Hi panda, welcome! I'm still struggling to believe I'm diffed. I'm waiting for my scan - tomorrow, only 27 hours to go! Had a bit of a scare Saturday when I started spotting. Went to OOH who said most likely yet another UTI gave me antibiotics but said if the spotting got worse to go back. Spotting settled and I feel better but anxious to see baby tomorrow!

12+4

BonaDea · 16/10/2012 12:12

aufaniae - yes, sounds like that wasn't the best experience! My dad and step mum have always had lots of cats (3, 4, 5 at any one time) AND one dog. It has always worked out well for them, but think broadly the cats are ok if they come first because then their superiority gene kicks in and puts them, as far as they are concerned, ahead of the dog in the pecking order.

I'd also love a dog, but that is a whole other hurdle with DH so I'm biding my time on that one!! Generally, I think pets of any kind are a good thing for kids - they learn responsibility, how to respect other living creatures and also a little about life and death.

havealittlefaith - good luck for tomorrow, am sure you'll feel much better afterwards (though am warning you, that only lasts for about 3 days then you will be on countdown to 20 weeks!!)

Knittingnovice · 16/10/2012 12:19

Just back from scan, baby all well, although very relaxed. Got the nuchal measurement and had bloods taken for combined screening. Am so relieved all is ok. 20 week scan on 6th December so just in time for Christmas.

On the way back the mw rang and asked me to make an appointment for 16-18 weeks so need to check dates and do that.

Caladria · 16/10/2012 12:31

My DP wasn't keen on cats until we got them. Now I swear he says hello to them before he turns to me.

toobreathless · 16/10/2012 13:26

I had my 16 week appt today, all went well, heard heartbeat :), next midwife appt at 28 weeks as I'm low risk and this is number two.

My 20 week scan is approaching rapidly November 13th.

Welcome panda & good luck for tomorrows scan, good luck also to faith

knittingnovice yay for your scan!

Giddypants · 16/10/2012 14:53

Sorry for me me me post!

Had a really bad start to the week, dad been admitted to hospital with a blood clot in his heart, which turned into them thinking he's had a stroke, if he has its only very minor, had a more detailed heart scan today and found an aneurysm in his heart where the blood clot had formed.
Hopefully will be able to solve the problem with drug.
Poor FIL is going in for chemo at the end of the week, and DS has a therapy session in Warrington on Thursday (2day trip) it's just non stop.
Also I had to ring in sick for today as my back has given out after Sunday at work too many patients, not enough staff!

On the good side, just been informed that DS car seat has been fully funded (£2300) by a charity which is a weight off

Still waiting to feel some more movement, not very consistent at the mo just the odd bit of fluttering here and there.

Giddypants · 16/10/2012 14:53

Sorry 16+3

kellestar · 16/10/2012 15:25

giddy that is not a mememe post at all! Poor you with everyone elses health issues on top of everything.

Hope your Dad gets sorted soon, it's so very worrying until you get the actual status update and what they can do. Poor FiL going for chemo, I've seen family go through it and it is a horrible experience for them. I hope DS's therapy session goes well and good to hear his car seat is fully funded.

I've felt a few odd flutterings but nothing consistent. I had a weird feeling in the pool this morning with DD, she'd headed for deeper water and I was tiptoeing/treading and really stretching my muscles and could feel some wriggling against me. It was really odd, can't remember that when I went swimming when expecting DD. We had some lovely little new babies at swimming this week, 6 weeks old... gosh I remember taking DD when she was that age, she still loves it.

13+4

kellestar · 16/10/2012 15:34

I love cats, my cat still lives with my parents as she is partially sighted. She's an ex farm cat and brings in all sorts of gifts for my parents, she brought in a hare the other day. She won't touch the guinea pigs or rabbits that have free range of the garden. She even wasn't bothered by my sisters hamsters.

We'd love to get some cats, even though we live quite rurally with fields all about, the lane out front is a rat run and most drivers ignore the 30 limit. Neighbours have lost so many cats, it's sad as they just keep getting new ones and it goes in circles. I've given up trying to remember their names.

aufaniae I have a plaque on my fridge that says, Dogs think they are human, cats think they are gods. Which is so true. But they are very loving, when the mood takes them.

itsaruddygame · 16/10/2012 16:01

No cats in our house - just a dog and a horse (although he doesn't live at the house with us!). The dog is great with kids and toddlers so hoping she will be good with the baby. We are just planning some baby gates from the start so we can segregate when necessary. Re: the toxoplasmosis I did grow up with cats and spend quite a bit of time at my parents who have 3 so am somewhat hopeful I may be immune (also spent a lot of time rolling in mud and eating sandwiches with dirty hands as a child!!) but am being careful all the same Smile.

MrsJohnDeere · 16/10/2012 16:17

So strange that you are all starting to have 16 week scans and dates for the 20 week one. I'm still waiting for my 12 week one! Not long now though - booking in appointment tomorrow, and I'm having a private 12 week scan on Thursday. What a long 12 weeks this has been.

I still haven't told people in RL. I keep meaning to tell close friends, as I'd want them to know if something went wrong, but I just can't do it. Dh reckons I won't say anythingnp but just turn up at the school gates one day with an actual baby and go 'surprise'!

One dog here, no cats. Used to have 2/3 dogs. Ime dogs plus small babies are absolutely fine, but things get much more difficult when the babies start crawling and walking. Ears and tails are just too tempting to hold on to.

Missmuffet28 · 16/10/2012 16:44

I have 1 dog little cocker spaniel girl called storm and 1 big ginger moggy called ernie (used to have bert and ernie sadly bert was poisoned :( ) I don't think my dog has a clue I'm pg the cat however sits on me as soon as my arse hits a seat and is sat here as I type but I don't mind as he's quite warm!! Couldn't imagine life without furrys! I grew up with them and I think it's lovely for children to do so :)

Welcome panda this thread is amazing hope you enjoy it too.

Giddy sorry you have had a crappy time hope it starts to look up for you and your family! X

Yay for those with great scans and heartbeats and fingers crossed for great scans for those still waiting x

Feeling the love for my mum today she took me shopping and bought me some nice comfy joggers to lounge round in and some nice big longline jumpers from next to wear with some comfy leggings and stuff as all my jeans now don't do up! They arent maternity but should last until i get really huge! Can't wait until I actually look pregnant and not just like I ate too many pies! I have had a dabble with some maternity stuff on eBay so see how that pans out when it gets here fingers crossed for a good fit!

AuntyDiluvian · 16/10/2012 17:21

HaveALittleFaith - me too me too! I'm 12+0 today and have my scan in the morning. Really hope it starts to sink in after that because at the moment I'm still feeling very Schrodingers Cat-like. Good luck with yours!

PandaWatch · 16/10/2012 17:35

Hello everyone! I've been lurking on here since getting a BFP but didn't want to join in before our scan as my superstitious self was worried about tempting fate! But we had our scan last Tuesday and all was well so I'm now allowing myself to get properly excited!

No permanant bump to speak of yet but bloating after eating is ridiculous - I got a real shock when I saw myself in the mirror after dinner last night! Same as MissMuffet - can't wait for my proper bump!

Oh and while we're talking dogs, our first born (Grin) is a gorgeous little cavalier king charles. He's definitely used to being the baby but he also loves being around my nephews so I'm hoping he'll adjust ok to the new arrival!

12 + 6 today!

LikeCandy · 16/10/2012 18:34

Welcome panda I can't believe the April list is still getting longer, IIRC you'll be number 90?!

So many dog/cat owners - yay! We have 4.5y/o house cat and 3y/o dog,
Apparently on finding out I was pregnant my Grandma said 'but I thought the dog was their baby'... er...!
I'm not too worried about cat and baby, I know there's a lot of superstition about keeping them apart but ours is so timid I'm sure she won't go near noisy/wriggly babe for a good long while! DH has been on litter tray duty bu we have had to change to an odourless litter as the smell of the woodpellet stuff we've always used was making me feel ill!
The dog is a little more difficult to judge, he's very well behaved but he's never really been around kids other than on walks/at the park. He doesn't mind tail pulling / rough strokes but he hates having his paws touched, and he's very lively/fast/bouncey.
Any first time mums buying baby noise CDs to acclimatise fur babies to the din?!

LikeCandy · 16/10/2012 18:36

oh and 15+6

(I am getting properly chunky now, it's not a good look and I'm sure it's only 2% baby an 98% flab - maternity jeans ordered from ASOS!)

aufaniae · 16/10/2012 20:07

So we have two pandas, FlaminNoraImPregnantPanda and PandaWatch?!

Brilliant :)

That means we have as many pandas as Scotland have! (Usually mentioned in reference to the number of Tory MPs - twice as many Scottish Pandas as Tory MPs apparently!)

LikeCandy that makes it 92 I think - bet we make it to 100! There should be a fanfare or something for the 100th person to join the group! Or streamers and balloons should come out of the screen or something Grin

Ollibobs · 16/10/2012 20:43

Hi all. Reading your posts about having cats etc has made me much more relaxed. For some reason, I'm so nervous about the toxoplasmosis. Only got tested because I had assumed I was immune (had cats all my life and loved a good mud pie as a child) so that reassurance plan kinda backfired! Will try to put it into perspective though... And just keep on washing my hands! Ha ha
So went into Mothercare at the weekend and had a look around at buggies and cots etc. Am finally letting myself get really excited now! I feel like I've become buggy obsessed now. Go figure the one I liked the best was £800!! So much more expensive than I expected!
What are you guys thinking about buying for the LO? Are you going to opt for new stuff or some second-hand items? The buggy I like is super cheap on eBay, but not sure if it's one of the things one should buy new. Any thoughts?

aufaniae · 16/10/2012 21:14

If a buggy's in good condition then second hand can save you a fortune.

I can totally understand people wanting to enjoy having new things. But this time round, we'll be going second-hand for the buggy.

I see it kind of like getting a second hand car!

A decent buggy really will make your life much easier. A cheap / badly designed buggy can be really frustrating to use, especially if you don't drive or often leave the car at home. If the choice is a decent buggy second-hand or a new cheap buggy, I'd go for second hand every time!

Actually, this time round I'll be relying on a sling much more, a stretchy wrap like this at first. Brilliant things! I didn't discover them till later on last time.
