How many muslins does one need?

Can you buy muslin by the yard and hem up little squares?

HoneyMum21 · 17/09/2012 19:23

My friend who can sew bought packs of the giant muslins from ikea and then cut them into quarters and hemmed them. I, however, am incapable of sewing so won't be doing this but thought i'd pass on the tip!

SpottyTeacakes · 17/09/2012 19:26

Oh yes if you're crafty, like pidj Wink, then that can be done! Sainsburys don't have stuff online really but have loads in store they do some lovely bits especially good when then do their 25% off

minipie · 17/09/2012 19:33

I'm sure you can Second if you can be arsed

emilyeggs · 17/09/2012 19:40

Ha ha! I use to work in Space NK and to think women would come in and buy a pack of three muslin clothes from Eve Lom to wash there face with! And they were plain white and cost a fortune! Grin

ISpyPlumPie · 17/09/2012 19:43

Bella - those scan pics are fantastic. We're going on Sunday, getting really excited esp. about how DS reacts!

Honey - sounds like a long weekend!!

Weejo - how fab is your DH?! Have vaguely thought about doing something similar for DH's 40th (not for a couple of years yet though!) however chances of neither DC letting something slip by then would probably be minimal Grin.

Bump pics are interesting too. Think mine looks a tad bigger, but not ridiculously so and would def agree that being short makes it more pronoucned. Am going to keep Spotty's response in mind for any further comments though.

Went to see the mw for bloods today. It nearly got missed as the mw I saw last time completely forgot and it was only reading on here about people having them at 28 weeks that made me check the appointment planner thing in my notes so thanks everyone[smile. Fingers crossed I won't need iron tablets this time.....

StrawberrytallCAKE · 17/09/2012 19:46

Hello everyone! I have been missing from this thread for a while because I got a bit dragged down with life and after being diagnosed with polyhydramnios (too much fluid around the baby) I admit I actively avoided thinking and talking too much about the pregnancy so subconsciously banned myself. Sorry for that!

Really pleased to see you're all getting on well and I'm going to rejoin if that's ok with you lot? My polyh has stayed the same and I'm having scans every two weeks now, it doesn't look like there's anything wrong with the baby but we won't know until she comes out and that's what I'm most worried about. I will upload a bump pic soon to show you!

So I've ebayed enough to buy my stokke, that took some serious ebaying. Moving on to the cotbed now :) I got a gorgeous moses basket in the mamas and papas sale a few weeks ago and have the carseat already as the dr seems to think she will come early, he has told me to have steroid injections to mature her lungs..eek. I mentioned making it to 40 weeks and he laughed at me and said there is no way you are getting to 40 weeks even if we have to induce you...more eek. I can't believe I'm in the last trimester.

emilyeggs · 17/09/2012 19:58

Welcome back strawberry good to have you back and good to hear your feeling more positive.

PurplePidjin · 17/09/2012 19:59

www.abakhan.co.uk/fabric/craft/hessian-calico-muslin/muslin-white-146cm.html

You'd get about 6 per m of fabric (45x45cm before hemming) then just tuck the edges over twice and stitch. Dylon is easy, just need a massive bucket!

Welcome back, Strawberry :)

Bellaboo123 · 17/09/2012 20:25

Welcome back strawberry

SpottyTeacakes · 17/09/2012 20:34

Yay Strawb is back I was going to interrogate you on another thread Wink

I know this sounds crazy but the last few days I haven't had any heartburn but dp (who never gets it) has?! Confused not that I'm complaining Grin weird though...

PrunellaDeVille · 17/09/2012 20:53

so relieved to see brook and strawberry back , i'd been concerned we'd not seen you both in an age.
happy belated birthdays weejo and ellie
lovely seeing everyone's bumps coming along nicely, i'm reluctant to take a pic of mine at the moment as it's almost always lopsided, i think i've got a back or a bum leaning against the right side of my belly! meanwhile something is regularly laying into my bladder, just in the last couple of days the toilet trips have become tiresomely regular and sudden.
pidjin i admire your home made muslins plan, even though i sew for a living and it'd be really easy to do, they're so cheap to buy that i can't bring myself to put in the effort Blush, i am reprimanding myself already for my poor attitude but i'm going to put the time into clothes for LO instead

Secondsop · 17/09/2012 21:00

If I do "make" my own muslins, I wasn't going to do a proper hem. I was just going to do a zigzag over the edges.

I originally had plans to make clothes for my baby, but I'm not really very confident at making trousers for boys, although i'd have no problems making little t-shirts. It would have been easier if I was having a girl because then I could have run up little skirts and dresses easily.

PurplePidjin · 17/09/2012 21:17

Prunella, I'm Envy although if i sewed for a living i doubt I'd want to do more at home!

Trousers are easy, loads of tutorials out there - think it's Made By Rae i use?

utopian99 · 17/09/2012 21:35

strawberry good to meet another stokke fan!! We're eyeing them to buy (via ebay,) and i love them.. What's yours like?

Would love to get better at sewing - used to do loads of alterations/customising in uni, but not much from scratch. My mum always made us fantastic stuff, i worry I'll never live up to that though.. Sad

cherrypiew3 · 17/09/2012 21:38

Welcome back Strawberry

Weejo How lovely of your dh and happy belated birthday.

Sorry to hear that so many of you are not sleeping well.

Went for a scan today and so far she is growing well. We took dd (10) with us and she was over the moon to see her little sister wriggling about on the screen.

StrawberrytallCAKE · 17/09/2012 21:51

Blush thanks! Hello :) :)

utopian it's mainly because we're both so tall it seems like the best pram for us and dd can ride on the buggy board without hitting her head on anything. We're getting the purple xplory with carrycot and I have the izisleep carseat too mainly because it lies back so the baby can stay in there for as long as needed. I am trying to get everything I can for the baby so that she is as comfortable as possibly (even though she'll probably hate most of it). I really want to get the sheepskin liner and winter kit but think I'll wait until closer to the time/after she's born. What are you going to get?

I also managed to book in at a sling library last week which was an experience. I have decided to get a caboo and dh wants a maitai (sp?). It was actually v attractive watching him try on the slings, is that odd?

Clarella · 17/09/2012 23:42

Welcome back strawb! Glad to hear you are feeling more positive.

I'm gearing up to getting the sewing machine out in a week or two after more house diy - not really got the space and other more important things to sort first, but I hope to manage it. I want to make a mobile with 3d fabric somethings, not sure what yet, possibly birds (and some Xmas decoration presents at same time). Note the word 'want' not 'will' though!

I'm definately getting brighter and fitter again after some thyroid wobbling and tweaking. Can't believe a managed a handstand against the wall at yoga, not attempted nor felt able to do since 20 weeks. And I really enjoyed being upside down! (probably confused Lo who I think is mostly head down now!)

Has anyone heard of or done 'active birth' classes? Everyone keeps raving about a teacher who does it up here and I initially thought it was a funky name for the hospital antenatal classes and then someone mentioned a book on it too. Do you need to do the course or could get lots from the book?

Impressed you managed to get DH to sling library strawb, let alone even consider a meitai (sp?!?) My DH needs it to look very manly and is only interested in something engineered like a baby bjorn, unless the, pattern had something architectural on it eg the shard (there's a business for one of you!)

Fingers crossed we all sleep tonight! X

Secondsop · 18/09/2012 00:38

clarella I love the idea of your mobile. I keep meaning to make Christmas presents with the sewing machine and i have lots of bits of Christmas fabric that thus far has been used only for bunting - maybe this year is the year I should do it given that I'll be broke what with the baby and with hosting Christmas, and given that I won't really be up for going anywhere in the evenings as the third trimester progresses so I should have some time!

Am goggle eyed at your handstand in yoga. Don't think I've done one since I was 10 years old, never mind 20 weeks pregnant!

Anyone else reaching the point where the baby seems to be moving loads? I can't sleep from the kicking.

SpottyTeacakes · 18/09/2012 06:36

Straw I've got to Caboo I'm excited to use it, it looks extra cosy for the winter.

Glad you're feeling better Clarella Smile

I'm going to Ikea tonight going to start my Christmas shopping Grin Kilner jars and presents for dd are on my list!

ellliebelle · 18/09/2012 07:48

One of my close friends had her baby last night :) im very jealous. She had strong every 3 minute contractions on sat night so wentvin but was only 1-2 cm and waters intactvso sent home. Everything quietened down over night so sunday morning she altetnated between walking/resting she had a couple of episodes of regular contractions but not enough to make her go to hospital. Then her waters went last night at 11.45 got to hospital at 12.50 to be told she was still only 4 cm then he was born at 1.45 :) hope i have a labour like that

StaceymReadyForNumber3 · 18/09/2012 09:01

Welcome back strawberrywell after a good day yest I can barely walk today I'm so tired so back to bed for me!

Clarella · 18/09/2012 09:08

Second, I emphasise I want to make it, dunno if will ever get to it! No one was more surprised than me about the handstands but given I'm a human weeble now I suppose gravity did all the work.

On that note I am extremely cross with my body, my bottom in particular. I have suspected for some time that it's jealous of growing bump and has been in competition with it. Just compared the two and bum gone up another inch but bump still 4 inches less than it, if my 'extra 0.5lb' a week is all for bum its a greedy sod and what's the point? Surely it can let me be an apple rather than the pear I always am. Then makes me worry baby not getting heavier.... or, have just thought, could my pelvis have widened yet? Legs looking stumpy too

Liking the look of caboo! - going to have to try a sling meet methinks.

Ahh lovely ellie!

Yet another woman raving about 'active birth classes' they do at the hospital here last night. I've missed the boat plus it clashes with my normal yoga which I absolutely refuse to give up, has anyone done/ got a book/ recommend a book? There seem to be a few. Anyone only used the book? From what little I know it sounds up my street, just wondering if I can get the basics from the book via library?

FriendofDorothy · 18/09/2012 09:20

I have one of [[http://www.amazon.co.uk/Close-Parent-Ltd-CLBC180-Charcoal/dp/B0013NDZGY these] slings which a friend has given me. It looks super comfy and she used it all the time with her third child.

FriendofDorothy · 18/09/2012 09:21

hmm try again.. here
