The Vista looked so good I got up and hobbled past it to have a look at the name. It had the car seat on it, Maxi Cosi I think, and a little baby who was having his hips checked. In X-ray.

DD1 looks like me, and has my temperament. She also has big feet like me. She is very clever and beautiful.

DD2 is short and fat like her inlaws, has their curly hair, tiny feet, attitude and lips, but enough of me to be utterly gorgeous.

Of my son looks anything like his daddy, I will need to rely on blind motherly love Grin

applepieinthesky · 10/08/2012 11:51

If my son looks like his daddy I?ll be pleased. I always said I wanted a little boy like him. More concerned if he looks like me!

Morning ladies (just),

We have ordered the uppababy vista in black. We loved it from the minute we saw it - functional but cool looking.

The genetics chat got DH and I talking - there won't be much variation here I'm afraid. Blue eyed families, mousy brown hair ( wes possibility of ginger) and pasty white skin. We both need specs, I still am asthmatic and DH had childhood asmtha. I have a vision sometimes of this wee pasty, jam-jar specs, wheezy child. Let's just hope he or she gets the best of the genes!

Just looking at mattresses, fitted sheets etc. do you put waterproof sheets on the cot straight away?

Also, I am looking for a range of opinions here. We will not be able to fit a cot in our bedroom. If we wanted to have baby in our room we would need to buy a crib or Moses basket. At the moment we are erring on putting baby straight into his or her own room (which is a matter of feet from ours) in the cot. Pros and cons people?

Catbag · 10/08/2012 12:11

Valium Queen You do make me laugh Grin

gardenpixies32 · 10/08/2012 12:12

Good point about the waterproof sheets Pass.

Valium, I remember reading a post where you mentioned waterproof sheets in Ikea for a fiver? Are they good? I have read that some waterproof sheets can be uncomfortable or make baby sweaty. How are the Ikea ones?

ValiumQueen · 10/08/2012 12:24

For my DH just imagine a cross between Ricky Gervais and Shrek. He is so clever though. I find intelligence very attractive, and think of Harrison Ford occasionally.

MissMummy1 · 10/08/2012 12:33

I would love my DC to look like my DH! He was a very sweet blonde haired, green eyed child and has grown into a tall, dark and (IMO) v handsome man! He was a podgey 11lber though as a baby... I was an asthmatic, milk bottle specced, freckly, pale, mousey haired child so heaven help us if s/he gets my dodgey genes! That said though we're also both very fiery, stubborn first borns so our offspring is likely to follow suit, fab..

ValiumQueen · 10/08/2012 12:35

The Ikea ones are fine, indeed the best I have found. They have a soft cotton like side, and a more slippery side. DH puts them on the wrong way frequently, but does not affect performance and the kids do not complain. They are not plasticky and not overly sweaty. I would use them all the time straight from the beginning unless you have a fancy breathable mattress set-up. They save having to wash the mattress cover, if you have one. If you don't, then they save ruining the mattress. I have been using mine for about 5 years, and even put them in dryer, and they are still fine. Hippy Chick do some but at £20 for the same size, I would not get them, as you need a few. They do fitted ones that you may prefer - the Ikea one is flat.

The advice is to keep baby in with you for first 6 months to reduce risk of cot death. Apparently the C02 in the room from you helps them to remember to breathe. Mine were in their own room very early on, and I got a movement monitor as a safeguard. Unless you go to bed when they do, and stay when they nap, the safeguard is not there, and that would drive me crazy!

ValiumQueen · 10/08/2012 12:38

Your baby pretty much always looks gorgeous, and other peoples babies look like spuds. There is one at nursery, the same age as mine, who still looks like a spud, then again so does her Mum.

Looking back at pics of mine, DD1 looked like an old man, and DD2 a sumo wrestler. It took her a long time to grow into her face, and was a chinless wonder for the first few hours.

gardenpixies32 · 10/08/2012 12:53

Thanks for that. I was wanting fitted ones preferably. How many do you think I should get per baby? Hadn't even dawned on me that I would need more than one each.

gardenpixies32 · 10/08/2012 12:54

I have just put my little 2 year olds down for their final nap with me! It is their last day today. I have been childminding them since they were 11, 12 and 13 months, they are now 30, 29 & 28 months!

ValiumQueen · 10/08/2012 13:18

Are your twins gonna be sharing a cot? I have 2 DDs and have six I think. I would get 4 to start with and see how you get on. I did not know you were a childminder! You will be an expert then Grin in my mad moments I have considered doing that. Soon passes though.

We always wanted to foster, especially as I was told at 26 I would never have kids. As this is DC3 this may be unrealistic. We have enough room, but it sure it would be wise.

kissyfur · 10/08/2012 13:26

Think the advice is not to put a waterproof sheet under where babies head will go, as they are not breathable. I never used them with DD, and never had a soggy mattress

gardenpixies32 · 10/08/2012 13:27

They will share a cot initially for about 7ish months then go into separate cots. I will get them 2 each as Ikea is a bit far from us.

I was a secondary school teacher for 10 years in London before becoming a childminder. We wanted to have kids and I wanted to stay at home with them so retrained a couple of years ago. It seems now that I definitely made the right decision. Childcare for 2 would cost 1600 per month! I will actually make 400 quid more a month being a childminder than I would have made staying in teaching. Plus I get the advantage of being at home with my children. I plan to return to childminding when twins are about 8 months and only look after one more under 5.

I knackered myself out with 3 two year olds, 7 month old, 12 month old, 5 and 6 year old. I had an assistant to help out as it was manic!

ValiumQueen · 10/08/2012 13:36

wow Garden!

The ikea ones are 'breathable' apparently, but that may mean something different as a baby could suffocate in a bumper or cushion. Also, as they sleep on their backs and cannot roll over for several weeks... As with so many things, I think we just need to research and make our own decisions. I know I would get flamed on AIBU if I said I was putting them in own room from a week old.

ValiumQueen · 10/08/2012 13:41

Interesting what you say about teaching wage versus childminding. I am a nurse, and on £27K since the bastards demoted me. I will be paying £1400 childcare if full time, and that does not include after school and holiday for DD1. If I go part time, I pay less, but get paid less too. Child tax credits only help out a bit, and the system is so confusing I still do not know what I am entitled to. It had crossed my mind to just do after school care and have the one youngster during the day, as DD2 would be in Nursery mornings or afternoons from August next year.

gardenpixies32 · 10/08/2012 13:46

With London weighting I had a good salary of 45k. We moved to the west country and I was earning 35k. With childminding one child full time and saving on nursery fees I will be 400 pounds better off than in teaching. Says a lot about the ridiculous prices of childcare in this country.

ShellyBobbs · 10/08/2012 13:56

Well I've still only purchased a pram and a changing mat, absolutely nothing else Shock, I'm a last minute shopper so will probably do a mad dash at about 37 weeks.

I've put on 7lbs so far, but have been a super dooper healthy eater since about 12 weeks and don't eat anything that is junk at all, I've even given up on the fizzy drinks now. It's the baby, not me that makes me eat like this!

Loving this hot sunny weather, don't understand what pregnancy and heat have to do with each other, is it really linked? I've actually got a tan which must be something to do with pregnancy because I don't even get one on holiday usually...

Sophiathesnowfairy · 10/08/2012 13:57

I have just got back from a few days away and it has taken me nearly the same time to catch up with the thread!

You are all so organised. I have done nothing except the buggy as we are meant to be moving house and I don't see the point until we have moved. We shold have moved on Tuesday but someone further up the chain is playing silly buggers. "get it sorted I WANT TO NEST" I want to scream at this stupid woman and the solicitor. We are meant to exchange today, I am not getting my hopes up. House back on the market if we don't and toys good and proper out of pram. T be honest could do without the stress. Grumble grumble.

Who was it who is having a glucose test today? I have one on Mon and have never had one before. Does it really make you feel rubbish?

Brown eyes red hair is my bet for this one, just like DD1 and DS. DD2 is the odd one out with brown hair and sallow skin, bit she is also the absolute prettiest! I may have a phot to pop on facebook

WaitingForMe · 10/08/2012 14:14

I'm nesting like a lunatic. Today I bagged up (and labelled) baby clothes for the hospital by weight so we can grab a babygro in the right size easily. I don't think that's over daft, just seems sensible to me...

I have very dark auben hair naturally but pale skin and green eyes and dye it ginger. DH has a clear hint of ginger about him and I would love a ginger baby as I think red hair is just gorgeous. I'm aware I'm a touch unusual in this.

Reflects on labelled bags of baby clothes. I'm aware I'm a touch unusual Grin

I haven't felt him kick today. But I have felt him move (I think) and I'm only 26+1. In two minds about calling midwife. Jumping up and down and gluggling ice cold fizzy drinks hasn't moved him.

Catbag · 10/08/2012 14:17

Been suffering with Braxton Hicks over the last few days :( Been drinking plenty of water but it doesn't seem to make any difference. Probably shouldn't complain too much as I haven't had any of the other problems that seem to be afflicting many others, spd and such, but it's just made me start to fret about going in to labour too early/ being stuck in hospital for weeks.
I am also procrastinating badly- I should be preparing for a company law exam on Wednesday, but I'd rather be doing anything but. Might go unpack and repack my hospitals bags while watching the Battlestar Galactica box set instead Grin

Catbag · 10/08/2012 14:22

Waiting Mine had a couple of quiet days this week, and like you, they weren;t reacting to cold drinks or pokes. I was starting to get worried but then they kicked off with a vengeance last night and haven't really stopped since then. One of them keeps sticking a knee out by my belly button. It's a very odd sensation!

Catbag · 10/08/2012 14:26

By the way Waiting- the bagging up of baby clothes is an absolutely inspired idea. I may go and do it too!

applepieinthesky · 10/08/2012 14:35

Whoever is having the glucose test today or anyone that has had one ? I would be interested to hear how you get on. I?ve got to have one the week after next. I?ve been told I can?t eat anything after 10pm the night before which is going to be tough for me. I usually eat every 2 hours or I start to feel really sick.
