I think this is the first time I've ever started a brooking thread! Shock

No mint flavoured toothpaste, you say, Whim? What on earth do they have instead? Candy flavour?!

Fluffy he does all sorts of things really, but mainly graphic, pop art style things. He is good and people like what he does, but he lacks confidence! I did a link to his website from FB at the weekend, so you can have a nosy if you like. Any twinges yet? Wonder if the next brooking babes will come in September or October.

itsMYNutella · 24/09/2012 15:59

Sorry Gen... i'd rather have cherry or apricot or strawberry or raspberry jam... I'll eat Marmalade but it isn't something that I need. Branston pickle on the other hand.... cheese and pickle sarnies....

GenericDietCola · 24/09/2012 16:05

Apricot jam sort of counts as marmalade I think. Mmm with you on the pickle - I am really into cheese and pickle butties at the moment!

FluffyJawsOfDoom · 24/09/2012 16:09

Have just eaten a cheese and pickle sarnie lol!

I'll have a look next time I'm on my laptop gen :)

No labour twinges or braxton hicks, but baby has shifted position today and omg OUCH. I don't know what she's doing in there but I'm not impressed!

OP posts:
itsMYNutella · 24/09/2012 16:12

I'm looking forward to making lemon curd again in the new year :) god I love lemon curd... it's about the only thing I've not eaten because I have to make it and that would mean a couple of jars full rather than just a taste. But shop stuff never tastes as good :(
Gen a friend brought me back a jar of pickle from their holiday in Scotland and I ate it in less than three weeks. I'm not sure I've ever eaten a jar so fast... or had cheese and pickle sarnies so often!
Other things I miss are stuff like green and blacks cocoa powder (it's somehow more chocolatey) and soft brown sugars. Ah well :) life goes on!

FluffyJawsOfDoom · 24/09/2012 16:13

Ps not too taken with orange marmalade but I love lemon or lime. Can you believe marmalade wasn't in my predictive text? Even chutney was in there!

OP posts:
itsMYNutella · 24/09/2012 16:15

Well chutney has to be in all predictive dictionaries but marmalade... Wink
Fluff I recommended cheese and pickle sandwiches to the friends visiting scotland but they weren't impressed. I'll let them know it's keeping the pregnant population going ;)

FluffyJawsOfDoom · 24/09/2012 16:16

It's strange what you can't get on the continent. I had a German friend who missed salted butter as apparently you can't get it there!

OP posts:
itsMYNutella · 24/09/2012 16:21

Did the German friend miss salted butter in England or Germany? They do have it here, the have it mildly salted and ... I'm not sure if I've seen just salted... but they luuuuuurve salt here! For my birthday (back in May) DP asked MIL to make some meatballs (we farmed out the catering work to willing relatives :) )for the party... they were really just little balls of salt Confused but they got eaten Hmm

whimsicalname · 24/09/2012 16:58

gen, that's exactly what they have: tropical flavour, bubble gum flavour or cotton candy flavour. Wrong wrong wrong. Oh, and cinnamon flavour.

And fluff, I remembered you'd already recommended cinnamon bun dough. We keep it on standby in the fridge! Love it. A lot of the bread's a bit meh though (or v expensive) so I bought a posho bread machine in the charity shop and now bake my own. - I can get a loaf going in the time it takes the kettle to boil for a cuppa!

FluffyJawsOfDoom · 24/09/2012 18:03

In Germany nutella though this was admittedly about ten years ago Blush

Ah I didn't remember mentioning it at all whims - I'm all about cinnamon swirls this pregnancy :o

Off for my flu jab in a mo, hoping not to get my wrist slapped by the gp!

OP posts:
GenericDietCola · 24/09/2012 19:44

Ooh Fluffy do you think she has moved down a bit then? Ouchy but exciting. Is it flu jab time then? Suppose I'd best get mine.

Whim I'm sure we could do some research into the link between sweet toothpaste and sweet foods and overweight/obesity. Cotton candy flavour is all wrong. Do your DSs like it or is toothpaste one of the shopping list items? Love the sound of your homemade bread.

itsMYNutella · 24/09/2012 19:50

I've seen cinnamon flavour for toothpaste somewhere else Whims... I wonder if your mouth actually feels clean afterwards Hmm

Fluff I'm sure once they found out there was salted butter in other places there would have been huge public demand in Germany Wink I have seen DP butter a piece of bread and then sprinkle on salt... But then I've seen someone (can't remember who) in the UK sprinkle sugar on buttered bread... Hmmmm....

TheLittleFriend · 24/09/2012 20:06

Busy on here today Smile

I'm sure you won't get told off fluff, at my surgery the flu jab 'season' starts in oct, even for preggos.

Gah, I've totally forgotten what everyone said and can't scroll back on my new fangled iPhone. Confused

Stacks · 24/09/2012 21:51

whim have you had root beer? It tastes like TCP... When I was in the US I missed crisps; they have ranch flavour, cheese and salted... But salt and vinegar, or pickled onion, chicken, beef, marmite... None of them. I love salt and vinegar crisps. Also breakfast cereals were expensive and limited, they all seemed to be for sugar obsessed kids. The fresh salsa was to die for though, and so easy to buy. Nothing at all like the stuff you get here. I also hated their chocolate, Herseys tastes horrible. There was plenty good stuff, also things like McDonalds and other fast food chains had much better quality meat in. Well, not re-constituted at least. Still, enough reminiscing... I wonder if I will ever go back. I'm wanted for medical bill dodging, and have no idea if that would somehow be linked to my passport. Hmm

I think it's time I started thinking baby supplies then. We have a few clothes, a travel system, and a crib (without required bolts), muslin cloths, and I think a cot sheet or two that were given to me by my sister.

I guess I was wondering what a new baby actually needs?

Some nappies (reusable ideally, maybe disposable for the first week or two) cotton wool for bums (or reusable wipes), a couple of outfits - vests, sleep suits, cardigans, maybe a hat and snow suit - place to sleep (crib, or carrycot from pram). I need maternity pads, bra pads, and nipple cream.

I could buy most of that from one shop the week before its due right? Other items can be bought after baby is here when I know I need it, and know what hasn't been got as gifts.

Am I being too relaxed?

This is turning into a mega post, and I've not even said hi to people. I'll post this then read back and make some responses.

FluffyJawsOfDoom · 24/09/2012 22:21

It sounds like you're half way there stacks and you could even use the crib rather than buying another sleeping spot - we have a Moses for downstairs and a crib for the bedroom. The only thing I would say is that at 38w I'm now not that mobile and can't stand or walk for that long and tbqh the thought of baby shopping would bring me to tears. Also the reusables lady I spoke to last week said a lot of brands start at 10lbs so disposables can be handy for a few weeks anyway :)

I don't know what she's doing gen - I usually have a high lump on my right which is feet and a low one on my left which i think is bum or back, but today the lumps keep swapping so she's either swapping the direction she's facing or tilting her head up away from my pelvis... I've no idea tbh but it's agony, my lower stomach muscles and pelvic floor are really taking a beating Shock I may have even shed a tear or two about lunchtime.

Got my jab, no questions asked an:)I was in and out in thirty seconds!

Hi little how're you? :)

The jury is still out on root beer stacks. I'm not that fussed about crisps. I like nacho type things and salty stuff, but S&V etc isn't a big concern.

I think you sound pretty on top of things. I tend to go into mothercare / boots at some point and buy:

packet of short sleeve suits
packet of baby grows
cardi (if I don't have a knitted one)
hat (don't like mitts, and baby grows have feet so don't need booties)

couple of sheets
couple of little blankies (I found an old pashmina the ideal thing)
Muslins

packets of all manner of disposable things: pad things for sleeping on in case waters break, and then after you've had the baby in case of bleeding at night; breast pads, maternity pads, nappies, cotton wool.

A packet of big black pants. Disposable pants are just silly.

Cream for all orifices (yours and the babies): nipple cream, nappy cream, pile cream (just in case...)

Paracetamol. More paracetamol.

A big bar of chocolate to sustain you through night feeds.

Some nice pjs, so you don't have to get dressed for ages

I would prob do that about 35 weeks. As fluff says, mobility/ carrying can be a problem after that.

IMO, babies don't need anything fancy, but they do need quite a lot of stuff as they (and you) are rather leaky for the first few weeks.

FluffyJawsOfDoom · 25/09/2012 08:07

Do you find those bed pads good then whims? I looked at them but they seemed very small and atm I'm in so much discomfort I roll about all over the shop. Sorry dh.

OP posts:
TheLittleFriend · 25/09/2012 08:12

I agree with you whims, babies certainly don't need loads of clothes but when they're tiny they might manage to get poo on at least four babygros and vests in a day, so allow for having plenty in the wash Grin

I'd say a hat is a must too, and a snowsuit if you are using a sling in the winter (little legs hanging out). Sounds like you've got it sorted though stacks Smile

TheLittleFriend · 25/09/2012 08:15

fluff I didn't use a bed pad but can see why it'd be useful. An old towel would do but obvs creates more washing. I found the bed smelt of stale milk from leaky boobs if not changed lots when dd was tiny though Blush!!

FluffyJawsOfDoom · 25/09/2012 10:28

Just back from midwife appointment - apparently I'm in pain because baby's gone back to back :( She's only just gone that way and did flip back and forth a few times yesterday so I'm hopeful she'll move back to her lovely back-facing position again soon!

She did find the idea of a sweep at 38w ridiculous though, thankfully, so I'm booked in in 2 weeks when I'm 40+4 which I'm happy with :)

OP posts:
FluffyJawsOfDoom · 25/09/2012 10:44

I think old towel might be the way to go little more surface area. Dh is worried about our mattress!

OP posts:
cakes82 · 25/09/2012 10:55

I have a bed mat thought it would be more discreet under the sheet than a towel,I was worried about memory foam mattress. dh thinks towel would be better, espec as I move about lots too Blush
Fluffy hope baby moves back to more comfortable position, I have sweep booked for 40+1, basically my next appt.

ScrambledSmegs · 25/09/2012 11:23

Morning, sorry for awol but had some interesting pre-baby panics, and went into denial mode for a few weeks Sad. Anyone had anything like this? I don't quite understand why it's happened with DC2 and not DC1.

Very glad to see good news, neat bumps and happy brookers since I last posted. Oh, and positive potty training stories too. DD is now dry in the day, and we're starting to wonder if she even needs a nappy at night. I guess she was just ready, it seemed to go very easily this time. I expect accidents will still happen for a while though.

fluff I hope the baby moves soon. She sounds like a little wriggler!

Good luck for the sweep, cakes. Ever had one before? I had one with DD, it was eye-watering!

whims that list looks perfect. Also, if you're planning to swaddle I would buy a few - we had two and found the wash/wear thing didn't work as well as we had hoped.

to everyone else. Sorry, still a bit down, not going to namecheck due to fear of omission although thinking of you all. Please forgive.

Smegs x
