Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Poor Mr Tock! DH is rather resentful of the fact he's been asked to moderate his drinking for the past three weeks Hmm following a rather awful night out with his work friends which resulted in lots of, err, mess for his pregnant wife to clean up at 2am I was NOT impressed and tbf he was utterly mortified - so I can only imagine how long 3 months must feel never mind us though eh?! :o

I'm sure it is very daunting for DH, but once the baby comes he won't have time to think about the responsibility (that's what I'm hoping anyway, as DH and I are equally daunted) and will just be happy Tockette is here.

I hope you're feeling a bit less weepy ninja, enjoy your sofa day :)

NinjaChipmunk · 27/06/2012 09:35

Thanks biscuits once again I think you are right. New baby coming but we don't know when, house move but we don't know when or where (and he doesn't quite get what you take and what you leave behind) and new school in a few months (at least 2 good friends of his are going there too which is good). Poor sausage probably doesn't know where to put himself at the moment. Doesn't help when it makes me cry though!
tock your dh still has another 5 or 6 months to get used to and adjust to the whole idea of the expanding family. And I bet as you get bigger it'll all start to fall into place for him. I think men it much more difficult to visualise than women do as we actually have the baby inside us which is a bit more 'real' than just having a wife with a rounder belly iykwim? Not that it helps but my dp mentioned last night that he should probably reread up on what happens in birth as he's sort of forgotten! Shock I trust him to to step up when the time comes though, he's not stupid and I know he'll advocate for me and what I need Smile

JenFraggle · 27/06/2012 09:43

Yay for your scan Tock

I'm planning on using reusables but haven't got round to buying any yet. Poppers, birth to potty and quick drying are my priorities.

musicalmrs · 27/06/2012 09:54

Right, nappies!

In terms of trials, you'll need to do some searching. Purple originally gave me a website to look at, but I can't find it. However, lots of local authorities give away samples/trials (or do for a low cost) so you can look at and experiment with the different types of nappies. Mine, from Essex, cost £10, and for that you got three reusable nappies to try. We bought them long before Iz was born and played with them - to assess which DH liked most he tested them all out on a teddy bear!

Fill Your Pants is a great resource (and a good place to buy them, or at least scope out your needs!). Somewhere on there there's a nappy questionnaire, where you can fill in your details and what you think you'd prefer and they'll recommend nappy types for you.

The nappies we have are the Itti Bitti Bitti Tuttos. From an asthetics point of view I love them - they look so cute! Practically, they're pretty easy to use - they are an outer bit (soft, waterproof, adjusts to the various sizes), and then they come with three soakers inside. You can clip them together to create different absorpencies - I tend to use one big one folded over or a small and a medium one together during the day (two levels of absorption), then put a third in at night. We deliberately went for one size ones as we wanted them to last! We also use the flushable liners, which is so much nicer poo-wise (though for the particularly explosive nappies they sometimes need some washing as well!). Washing wise, we tend to put ours through a rinse cycle, then a 1 hour quick wash at 60 degrees. A single normal wash would probably be enough, we're just used to using our 1 hour wash for everything!

At the moment we're using these nearly all the time, with the occasional disposable when we run out and don't notice, and sometimes when we go out for extended periods of time. Washing wise, we only have 12, and so are washing roughly every couple of days - sometimes more if we have a particularly nappy heavy day. I'm looking to buy more as soon as they're next on offer, or as soon as there's an offer on something similar we like the look of.

As Whims said, you can easily switch between disposables and reusables whenever you feel the need, which is what we've been doing. There's not much difference in performance as far as we've seen - we've had occasional leaks with both types of nappies.

As I said, the cost was a huge factor for us. Nappies like these are often on sale to encourage people to invest - we bought our set of 12 when they were, and I think we spent around £130. Considering you spend over £1000 on nappies over a baby's life time, that's a huge saving! Even with using some disposables, we'll still have saved money as well as saving on nappies going to landfill. We'll probably augment our stash a little bit, but I can't imagine we'll have spent more than £200 by the end of it. The liners we get are about £3 a roll for 100 (though you can get them cheaper), and then it's just the cost of detergent and the washing machine - which can be very little if you have a nice economic machine like we do :) Storage wise, we have a plastic bin in her bedroom lined with a mesh bag that we simply chuck in the wash when the time comes, meaning no need to handle dirty nappies! We haven't had any problems with it smelling Fluffy, though I've heard about tea tree - need to buy some just in case!

Of course, there's nothing wrong with disposables either. I know my mother feels a bit confused by the reusables, and if she doesn't catch on, Iz will wear disposables when she's staying there. We weighed up all the positives and negatives and decided they were the right decision for us - and so far so good!

Ramble over...

musicalmrs · 27/06/2012 09:57

Hi Jen, how's N doing? Poppers - good for nice and quick, although not quite as adjustable as velcro. Having said that, someone when we discussed this before mentioned that the velcro loses its effectiveness over time. Ours have got poppers, and we're finding them ok - although mabe the fit would be marginally better with velcro?

Birth to potty was one of our priorities too. Drying wise, the outsides are almost completely dry when they come out of the machine - they don't need long at all! The soakers take a bit longer to dry - very quick on the line, a little slower inside.

FluffyJawsOfDoom · 27/06/2012 10:01

Great, thanks musical! I'm going to look at those websites now. Afa DH is concerned, I think this is the key sentence "I think we spent around £130. Considering you spend over £1000 on nappies over a baby's life time, that's a huge saving!" Wink :o

Have just realised I'm into Trimester 3 on Saturday Shock I think I will insist DH takes me out for a curry :o

JenFraggle · 27/06/2012 10:18

Found some Itti Bitti Tuttos at £14.50 each at Funky Monkey Pants

musicalmrs · 27/06/2012 10:36

Fluffy, I think that was key to my DH too Wink. He also now loves colour coordinating nappies and outfits, and tells me off if I put her in ones that clash! He also explains how they work to everyone. Think he's a convert!

Jen oo thanks, will have a look! In terms of best deals, the bundles are worth looking at too - that's what we did, but can't remember how the price of nappies compared.

I'm also not suggesting that Bitti Tuttos are the best out there. They just happen to be the ones I fell in love with, that had the system that DH liked! :)

DreamingOfPeace · 27/06/2012 13:21

hurray for A great scan tock and your wriggly little bean. If its any help, my dh was hugely apprehensive about the dts tock which he never really was before DD. sensible man He loves them to bits now, though admittedly took a bit longer to click with them at the beginning I think. He may refute that if asked and he's always loved them but it was a shock to our little family expanding to 5 overnight.

Oh bartlet its so nice to see you here. I'm Brooking Absolutely No Argument Whatsoever that everything goes well this time and the extra investigations end up a mere reassurance. Glad you're being well looked after.

I'm a disposable nappy user. I also buy on offer, but not to the extent of loopy due to lack of storage space. I do feel a bit guilty but we grow veg, recycle and i put it to the back of my mind Blush

NinjaChipmunk · 27/06/2012 13:24

dream i use disposables too. Generally sainsburys own brand cos they are cheap.

DreamingOfPeace · 27/06/2012 13:25

And happy due date ninja! Saturday. That'll be a great birthday for your DD. Grin . My DD was worryingly clingy, anxious, terrible separation anxiety and it stopped overnight once the dts arrived. I'll hope your ds will relax too when at least one change, the new baby, has happened.

NinjaChipmunk · 27/06/2012 13:28

aw thanks dream I am currently sat still in my comfy pj's on the sofa, mning and have been here all morning. I do have to go out but not till about 5 so long may it continue!

GenericDietCola · 27/06/2012 13:39

I'm enjoying all the nappy chat, although we used disposables with DD. Fortunately we had a 'dealer' who could get them very cheaply for us!

Ninja you stay comfy my dear, don't want that baby popping out just yet. Any house news to report? Have they given any feedback on your offer?

Fluff yay for 3rd trimester already!

Tock I think I said yesterday, but I'm so happy your scan went well and DS is so excited. I think my DH is a bit worried too, but we both sway between worrying about another mc and worrying about how we'll cope with two (not so much of the latter for me, I have it all worked out!)

Dreaming, Jen, Musical, Biscuits - always lovely to see you and your snuggly babies! How are you all getting on? Re Biscuits question re when to put the baby to bed, I honestly dont know. I suppose it's safer to keep them with you, but we started putting DD to bed upstairs at around 2 months in a bid to get her into a decent night time routine. This worked for us and we used the monitor turned up really high so I could hear every breath. She went into her own room at 3 months when she outgrew the moses.

Well, I am now a MWEPP! All was fine and I have my scan booked for Tuesday. Now it's nearly here it seems to have gone quickly, but a few weeks ago time was dragging terribly. I just hope all goes well on Tuesday and then we can start telling everyone and I will try to stop mentalling quite so much.

NinjaChipmunk · 27/06/2012 14:05

awesome news gen and tuesday is not too long to wait for the scan. Arf at having a nappy dealer though, I want one of those!
Only feedback was that they want more money which we can't do so have left our offer on the table so to speak. We are off to do a second viewing on this tonight which dp is a bit 'meh' on but is on budget and in the right location and this tomorrow which has all the space but very little character and not such a good/ nice location. this is the one we really liked but can't afford.

FluffyJawsOfDoom · 27/06/2012 14:08

Yay for MWEPP status Generic! Brew Thanks Is it your 12 week scan on Tuesday? (It's Bartlet that has her 8 week coming up next week, isn't it? clearly needs a spreadsheet but refuses to be that organised )

FluffyJawsOfDoom · 27/06/2012 14:11

I reckon if you phone them back in a few weeks Ninja they may be more willing to negotiate on price? They will be on the verge of emigrating and if they've had no offers in the meantime........

I've no idea about location but both the others look lovely, if the first one is a wee bit on the small side :)

NinjaChipmunk · 27/06/2012 14:16

yeah the third bedroom on the first one is tiny but there is potential to put a nice big conservatory on the back where the patio is and turn the kitchen and diner into one room which would be really nice (and could contain all the child crap). We shall see.......

GenericDietCola · 27/06/2012 15:03

Yes Fluff, 12 wk scan on Tuesday for me.

Ooh Ninja the houses look lovely but oh my I'm glad we live up north - our house cost half that! I agree with Fluff that they might think again if they are in a hurry to move. As DH always says, house buying and selling is a game of nerve!

Loopyhasanotherbean · 27/06/2012 15:24

ninja is there much difference between what you have offered and what they want? the kerb appeal much nicer on the one you like, i am terrible when it comes to houses, i only ever buy houses that i like the look of from the outside, even though you spend most of your time inside them lol. A tad jealous at how quickly yours is selling though, i love looking at rightmove but have banned myself from there now as mine has been on the market a while now but still no serious offers. And sadly it's in Cambridgeshire and a bit more than your budget else i'd be cheeky and same come and view as it is massive compared to those!! But if anyone out there wants a 5/6 bed place then let me know!! (we use one as a study but technically its a 6th bedroom)

FluffyJawsOfDoom · 27/06/2012 15:40

...and of course it comes with several massive attics loopy :o

I searched houses in our area and by the looks of things we've made about 10k in 6 years since we moved in Shock better than losing money of course, but a bit of a shocker when you consider most people had doubled their money (as it were) in that sort of time pre-recession!

Loopyhasanotherbean · 27/06/2012 15:44

yes fluffy :) maybe thats where i am going wrong, maybe i should get the estate agents to put in the details the fantastic loft space available to store several years worth of nappies in advance (and god knows how many clothes and other things that we've thrown up there!)

cakes82 · 27/06/2012 17:24

Fluff I've been looking on internet to try figure out when trimester 3 started and it wasn't really giving me a straight answer or different sites said different things. Cant believe that in next few days we are both in the final third!! According to email I received baby will put on a big growth spurt in the first three weeks of this new trimester.
Loving the nappy advice thank you will check out the web pages. Have found a welsh based company that deal with uk and europe I think that do trials and sell reuseables they look ok, from what I can tell?! www.babykind.co.uk/nappytrial.htm

ScreamIfYouWantToGoFaster · 27/06/2012 18:11

It's not over until it's over Ninja! If they've been on the market a while they still might change their mind about your offer. If you've offered only £20k below asking that's still a good offer! Still No Brooking for you! Thanks for the links by the way, very pretty houses!

Any twinges or other indications of an imminent sneeze birth Ninja?

ScreamIfYouWantToGoFaster · 27/06/2012 18:16

Oh and Fluffy have you tried mouseprice? They have loads of sold house prices data, which they use to generate an estimate of current value for any address. So if you put your address in they should be able to give a good indication of the value of your house, factoring in things like how the local house market has fared since you bought the house. I'm not sure if you need to register with the website to see the estimates, but registration is free anyway.

clickingtock · 27/06/2012 21:18

Ninja - your poor DS, so much change. Brooking he gets through. Of course, you are bound to be tearful - you are about to give birth! Sofa nest sounds lovely. Good luck with all those houses. I reckon you'll get the one you really want!

Gen Fab news re MWEPP. Will be checking in on Tuesday. We really are v close together aren't we? I suspect the tockbean will be a good couple of weeks late so we may well have our DC2s on the same date!

Bartlett - so glad you are getting good care. We are all brooking.

Fluff and Cakes - congrats on Tri3 - so brilliant.

I think washable nappies do save dosh but not if you use a dryer which it doesn't sound like any of you do. I struggled with popper ones - I'm more of a velcro lady. Bitti d'lish were my least favourite brand even though I agree with Musical that they look fab. Drying time was terrible. The brand I like now do one nappy for all ages - no idea if this is a winner but good value at a tenner a pop. There's far too much choice isn't there?

Thanks to Biscuits, Dream and others re' comments about responsible/worried DPs. I'm not really worried about him and agree he will just step up. I just feel for him. So I bought him a posh bottle of red... Grin I know the way to his heart, I really do. We are supposed to be getting married next October and I think that will help ice the massive wonderful cake of our family. Smile
