Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Hmmm, just had a very judgy-pants lady at the pharmacy counter at the supermarket. Looks into carseat and asks how old he is, so I say 6 weeks, and she says 'he's big isn't he', but in a really judgey way, not in a nice 'oooh, he's a bigguns' way. Then asks if he was big born, so I say 8lb 4, and she just sort of went 'hmmmm, well, he looks content....' Hmm

Cheers love - and I care what you think because......?

I think I may get a tattoo on my forehead which says 'yes, my children are big, this is because my husband is also massive. Get over it' *

  • I may need to abbreviate this a bit as my forehead isn't that big.....

Pah!

McPopcornMouseNFries · 16/04/2012 15:03

Omg biscuits Shock I'd have been tempted to enquire after her size/weight/sparsity of hair Hmm

jaggythistle · 16/04/2012 15:38

cheeky woman biscuits!

I've just hatched a proper big jelly plug bit Shock

Isn't it annoying that this means nothing really, could be anything from hours to weeks till labour. (not that i just searched mn to check Grin)

ScreamIfYouWantToGoFaster · 16/04/2012 15:40

Biscuits Shock just Shock at that stupid woman. Unbelievable.

Grin at Scarlet's warning to Popcorn about people offloading old baby crap! I managed to convince DH that it was cost effective for us to buy everything new instead of accepting stuff from relatives on the basis that this is DC1 and therefore everything would be re-used for subsequent kiddies. Now that we've established there's NO WAY I'm ever getting pregnant again DH doesn't seem to have twigged that our purchases are now less cost efficient Blush We are planning to ebay most of it when we no longer need it though. Plus I'm still hoping to adopt more kiddies in the future, so some of the stuff might be re-used, maybe, Hmm

This feels like the longest baby-free stretch we've had in AGES! Naturally Jaggy is keeping her LO snug as a bug until her parents arrive on Sat, and my body is refusing point blank to oblige with an early eviction, therefore it's all on Scarlet! No pressure, ahem, Blush

cakes82 · 16/04/2012 15:40

Popcorn I got a new moses basket cover and hood from ebay. My moses basket came with a mattress, i'm still torn what to do about that. Read somewhere that as long as there was no damage and you cleaned it well, that would be ok.

Biscuits My cousins baby is 6months old and in 12-18mth clothes and 2ft 4 both parents are 6ft. I agree with Popcorn on response.

I've got two questions, is it worth getting a moses basket stand or would basket be equally ok on top of my chest of 3 drawers?

Also, I'm nearly 16w pg, I appear to have only put 6ozs on in 3 weeks. Since getting pg I lost about 4lbs and regained about 1. In the last month or so I have been eating more normally and now eat chocolate again. Should I be worried? I'm seeing mw on Thurs anyway.

ScreamIfYouWantToGoFaster · 16/04/2012 15:41

Is it wrong to be so jealous of Jaggy's jelly deposits? Grin

jaggythistle · 16/04/2012 15:48

you might not be if you'd seen it. ew.

i can't remember when it came out last time, probably during the week before labour and maybe during as well? i suppose it is nice that something is happening, even if it doesn't really tell me anything!

ScreamIfYouWantToGoFaster · 16/04/2012 15:50

Cakes I don't have a moses basket so I'm just commenting based on what I've read. My understanding is a lot of the basic moses stands are actually quite unstable and easily knocked over by sleep-deprived parents stumbling back into bed in the middle of the night. For that reason it might actually be preferable/safer to go with your plan of using the low chest of drawers, provided of course that you put some sort of edging around the top of the chest to prevent the basket from just sliding off if it's accidentally knocked. I'd be tempted to just get a few basic brackets from your local DIY store and position two on each of the four sides of the surface you want to put the basket on, so that if the basket is knocked it'll just hit the brackets and stay on top of the dresser.

Of course some chest of drawers have a "rim" already in place, especially if it's intended to be used as a changing table?

Can I caveat all this with the fact that I've never actually used a moses basket, I just read a lot about them before we decided to buy a bedside cot instead. We were partially put off by the moses stands. (Although obviously there are plenty of safe stands out there if you look around and buy a good one!)

Wants3 · 16/04/2012 15:53

DN rushed back to The local hospital and transferred by ambulance back to GOSH this morning!:( his head wound was bleeding and one of the spring things inside had come through the skin. They are going to operate again!

cakes my Moses basket is on a low drawer unit next to my bed. I have bought some grippy stuff to go underneath it to stop it sliding.

cakes82 · 16/04/2012 15:58

Its an 'adult' chest of drawers up against the wall. I'll look into the grippy stuff, thanks Wants

Poor DN and his family, hope everything works out ok.

jaggythistle · 16/04/2012 15:58

aw poor DN wants brooking gard for him :(

jaggythistle · 16/04/2012 15:59

hard even

McPopcornMouseNFries · 16/04/2012 16:02

Oh gosh wants I hope it goes ok :(

cakes I gained 5lbs in the first 4 weeks of pregnancy, but I haven't gained anything since so I wouldn't necessarily worry. Has your MW commented on your weight gain/loss/equilibrium?

I agree wth scream with regards the chest of drawers :)

Biscuitsandtea · 16/04/2012 16:03

Brooking for DN Wants xx

scarletfingernail · 16/04/2012 16:05

If it is wrong Scream then I'm right there with you Grin Why can't I hatch a jelly plug? Envy

Biscuits what is it about when you go out with DS2? First of all the awful Post Office woman and now this horrible one. Why do people feel the need to be so rude where children are concerned. The cashier in Sainsburys asked my DS last week if he was back at school on Monday. He looked at her like "what are you on about?" I explained that he's 3 and was only 3 not even 4 months ago. Cue her "Oh my goodness, what a big boy. Oh how awful it must be for him that he looks so much older, what a shame for him." Hmm Well it's only a problem when people like you feel the need to go on about it. We get it all the time.

Cakes not sure re the stand. I think I'd feel that it's safer on a stand to be honest as it's held into place so no chance of being knocked off. If not I'd probably put it on the floor. But I am worrier like that. As for the mattress, I definitely think it's best to buy a new one. I've bought a new one for DC2 even though my other one was only used my DS. Even though I kept it clean and it still looked new, I know how much he was sick on it, how much of his hair fell out on it etc. If it's come from Ebay you can't know 100% about what it's been through before. Again, that might just be me being ultra cautious.

OP posts:
scarletfingernail · 16/04/2012 16:09

Lots of crossed posts there re moses basket stand. I must have one of the good ones then, I didn't realise some were dangerous. There's no chance of my basket coming off the stand, it's fully gripped deeply all around the basket.

Wants I'm so sorry to hear about your nephew. I hope they're able to make him better very quickly.

Biscuitsandtea · 16/04/2012 16:25

Yes Scarlet we get the school thing all the time too! People looking when you're out on a school day and saying 'oh, have you got the day off' as if I'm letting him play truant!

Silly people! My MIL says she always had it with DH and DBIL though all the time they were growing up so I guess I'd better get used to it!

Brooking for the hatching of some jelly plugs (Phrases I never thought I'd say, number 397)

ScreamIfYouWantToGoFaster · 16/04/2012 16:26

Oh Wants how stressful! No Brooking extra hard for your DN and sister.

Shock at the cashier's comments to Scarlet's DS. What is WRONG with these people?! Personally I think both Scarlet and Biscuits are downright saints for not just slapping these stupid people on the spot! Angry Surely you could blame your response on late pregnancy/early post-natal hormones? Grin

Biscuitsandtea · 16/04/2012 16:28

I should caveat, I mean I get the school thing when I'm out with DS1, not DS2. Haven't met anyone that stupid yet :)

scarletfingernail · 16/04/2012 16:35

Grin Biscuits I did actually laugh out loud at your last post Grin

neverenoughsleeportea · 16/04/2012 17:54

I get it loads in reverse as DS1 is small for his age. Why people feel the need to point out the blinding obvious I don't know.

jenfraggle · 16/04/2012 18:18

Wants brooking hard here for DN

Cakes I'm 35 weeks and have only put on 5lb. Midwife is happy though so don't worry too much about it. Like she says, it will be less baby weight to shift afterwards :) All the nutrients go to the baby first so they will be getting what they need and you will have anything that is left.
