Here we go again.......

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
jenfraggle · 30/03/2012 09:54

Well I had rather an eventful night last night...

Watching telly in bed and started to get rather uncomfortable, went for a wee for the hundredth time that day and managed another one of the teaspoon full ones. Get back to bed and the pain starts. Take some paracetemol but it doesn't seem to do much. Feel like I need to go again so wander back to the bathroom where I start to feel hot, lightheaded and sick. DH brings me a bucket and up comes my tea. Am in so much pain I don't know what to do with myself. Wandering round, on all fours, kneeling, sitting but nothing helps. Never been in so much pain before.

DH calls the midwife who says to call OOH doc. They say to go to hospital to get checked out. We asked to go to a specific hospital which is where maternity is based but they say no and send us to another one. Get there around 11ish and I'm sick again in the waiting room. Eventually doc sees us and sends me down to the hospital we originally asked to go to Angry

Off we go to the other hospital which is the main one for the county and where I was born and get put on a trace. I had to press a button whenever I felt movement which was hardly ever with my lazy little thing. According to the machine I had 1 contraction Confused. Eventually a doc is free to see me and he said that I have a UTI and am dehydrated. I get put back on the trace as I had more pain while he was there. It was coming in waves. By this time it's gone 2am and nasty doc said about keeping me in and putting me on a drip to get fluid back in me. As a needle phobic that is not what you need to hear at that time of the morning when you are in pain. I said no to the drip and he said I had to drink water and prove to him that I could keep it down, if I could then I could go home. Wouldn't it make sense to suggest trying that first rather than tying up a bed all night?

I then managed 4 cups of water nobody is sticking a drip in me and managed to keep it down and then had to wait around for my prescription. Eventually managed to get out of there about 3am after being asked numerous times by the midwife if I was sure I wanted to go home. Being tired and in pain and with the threat of a needle if I stay it was very hard to answer her politely but I think I managed to just keep saying that I would rather just go home and get some sleep.

Feeling a bit better today and am now on penicillin and co-codamol so hopefully won't have a repeat of last night.

NinjaChipmunk · 30/03/2012 10:10

wow jen that sounds awful. Can you have anything like dialoryte to help with re-hydration? UTI's can do funny things to people. My friends father recently had one and he was acting like he'd had a stroke by the time he got to hospital, slurring his words, slumping. My friend said it was really rather frightening.
I know you have the issue with needles but I am guessing the doc didn't realise quite how phobic you are? I guess you would rehydrate faster on a drip and they could check both you and babys movements regularly to make sure it was working? I really hope you are on the mend now, but please do go back if you feel its not working. How many weeks are you now?

ScreamIfYouWantToGoFaster · 30/03/2012 10:56

Have to post and run because I've just woken up and my Mum will be here in a sec.

Just wanted to offer a big hug to Jen, that sounds like a nightmare! You poor thing! I'm glad they eventually sorted the problem and you have good pain meds to avoid this happening again today. UTIs can be INCREDIBLY painful and it's so misleading that they present as back pain! Poor you, so glad it's over.

Apologies for the mememe ranting last night, I was feeling a little sorry for myself Blush Obviously every single No Brooker is facing their own challenges, and we are ALL getting through them. I will be more positive (and less whiny) next time!

To answer Biscuits' question, I'm hoping to get the consultant to put in my notes that I go straight to cs without a trial of labour (if I pass the scan and make it to my appt!) if I go into labour before my cs date. Once that's in place I would definitely LOVE to speed things up! I have elaborate daydreams where just at the end of the consultant appt, AFTER the consultant has written "straight to cs" in my notes, my waters suddenly break while I'm still in the room Grin Then I get whisked off to theatre (before any contractions have started) and by Wed eve I have my LO! Grin That's my happy thought at the moment!

McPopcornMouseNFries · 30/03/2012 12:27

Wow, jen that sounds horrible! I hope you're feeling a bit better this morning?

DreamingOfPeace · 30/03/2012 14:12

sending sympathy and glasses of nice cold water jen. Sounds grim

TooImmatureTurtleDoves · 30/03/2012 14:14

Jen, sounds awful! Glad it turned out to be just a UTI and not premature labour, though. How are you feeling today? Hope the antibiotics are working. With hindsight that does explain why you were getting up 5 times a night to pee - I thought that seemed a bit unusual when I read your previous post, but I never put two and two together. And at least you avoided the drip! That's the No Brooking spirit at work.

I love Scream's daydream! Will be Brooking that it all happens exactly like that and BabyScream is here on Wed safe and sound. Perhaps you should ask your consultant for a prescription for Ranitidine or something just in case (unless you already have this?) it doesn't pan out like that and you still have the heartburn to contend with.

jenfraggle · 30/03/2012 14:42

Thanks. I've been guzzling water to try and flush everything through and haven't had the pain today. Got the co-codamol by me here so if I feel any pain coming on I'll take it straight away but seeing how I get on without it first. Hopefully now I won't need to get up in the night as much, I just assumed that my bladder was getting more squashed and that it was one of those normal, annoying pregnancy things.

I keep forgetting to say but one of the exercises we do in my Lazy Daisy class is supposed to help heartburn. Not sure how effective it is as I've had less since being pregnant but may be worth trying? You sit cross legged and put your hands together above your head, arms stretched right out. Look up at your hands and circle your body clockwise although I'm sure the direction can't matter that much. It's like you are stirring a big pot on the ceiling and need to move your whole body to make the biggest rotation you can. You could also do this on a ball if the floor is uncomfortable. The important part is the stretching up and rotating.

PurpleWithaBlueBun · 30/03/2012 14:47

Too pleased I didn't offend :) Both of those problems! + I think it leads to a crisis in confidence in the Mum sometimes, with the poss problems and then also 'oh the dummy soothes her why can't I?' Lots of factors, so I think leaving it awhile is the best thing imo. I am not Anti dummy, you just have to be careful and I did use one for Dd.

Anyway my fellow boobers! I am very pleased to hear of leaky boobs, better to have too much milk and than have too little and your milk will settle down at about 6 weeks so important we let those babies work on our supply now, as it can be harder to increase supply after 6 weeks if you have a drop.

I did have an ok sleep last night, thankfully!

Jen if you have stinging while you wee, I swear by fresh lemon juice in water to help with that. I had a drip this time and I had some numbing cream that was even better than Emla, so do ask for local anaesthetic cream if you do end up needing something like this. I felt like a bloody pin cushion after this birth which is not great for needlephobes! However, I had no needles the first time accept for the syntometrine :)
I really hope you feel better soon :(

Dream I spotted this twin feeding pillow I hope you see this before it ends!

PurpleWithaBlueBun · 30/03/2012 14:49

Better link for dream :)

pommedechocolat · 30/03/2012 14:53

6 weeks? So I have a week and a half to go and then it will be more established purple? I think we're doing fine but after the debacle with dd1 I get a bit paranoid. Mil and dm not the most supportive either. When not being paranoid I'm really enjoying bf ing this time round and could not imagine having to deal with bottles at the moment!

I tried a dummy too but she wouldn't take it so decided for me!

PurpleWithaBlueBun · 30/03/2012 16:07

Pomme your milk supply will be more settled, but it is a rough figure and it is dictated by your body obvs, but on average 6-8 weeks :)

If you are concerned now is the time to give it some welly to boost your supply really well. It sounds like you are doing well though.

Sometimes after this problems can come to light, like for me it will be a crunch on whether Ds tongue tie is a problem or not.

It is also normal for babies to stop gaining so fast after this point, which is normal, but you can unfortunately meet the odd shit HCP who was educated in the stoneage recommending top ups, as ff babies will still be piling on the weight.

pommedechocolat · 30/03/2012 16:20

She feeds really often (absolute max every three hours and this only normally happens once in the day and once at night) but only in short bursts. Her average feed lasts just under ten mins.

Is this okay? Really really can't face expressing for reasons varying from laziness to superstition!

How is the feeding going with a tongue tie for you? Does it mean feeds last a long time? That must be hard with toddler as well.

jen - omg what a night! Poor you? How you doing now?

Wants3 · 30/03/2012 16:26

Sorry to hear about your nightJen and good to hear that abit more sleep was on the cards for the new mummies!
I have had a fun afternoon with DCs putting the pram together( wish DH had been here too) it is now in the living room along with the car seat and Moses basket so this baby is taking up space already! I will leave it up until DH skypes tomorrow and then decide where to store it until it is needed. DH phoned me at work today because he hadn't spoken to me since weds am and he couldn't sleep until he did. My collegue thought I was talking to a parent so was very surprised when I ended the call with " love you too!" :)
I am out for dinner tonight with everyone from work as one of the girls is leaving. ( the girl I mentioned awhile ago who had a mc) I hope I can stay awake.

PurpleWithaBlueBun · 30/03/2012 16:34

Means it isn't easy to get him latched well, he is windy and I sometimes am a bit uncomfortable. My milk is plentiful so it pours down his throat, so when my supply naturally drops a bit at 6 weeks, it could make his latch worse as he struggles to get milk, or his weight will drop. In which case we might have to have it investigated and divided. Or I am hoping that his TT will stretch and/or he will get better at latching as he is more practised and has a bigger mouth. TT doesn't always need snipping or cause real problems, just needs a bit of time :)

Feeds vary in length etc as with any newborn :)

I think you are doing great Pomme just if it was a worry of yours, you can express.etc low supply worries me as I had a problem with DD so I am extra careful as it is easier to fix an oversupply.

Toddlers are hard full stop, luckily/unluckily? with SPD.etc DD got used to me not being able to do as much with her :( so is quite self sufficient.

ScreamIfYouWantToGoFaster · 30/03/2012 19:02

Oooo Purple has your DS's name been confirmed as Hugo? Or did you do a last min change in the end? If you would rather not say then then feel free to tell me to mind my own business!

Munx2 · 30/03/2012 19:33

Hiya just popping in, it's me Munx.

Am 15 weeks now, have tried to stay away..... But seems I can't!!

Hope you are all doing well, congrats on the new arrivals and good luck for the next few weeks for the imminent ones.

DreamingOfPeace · 30/03/2012 19:59

Hi munx lovely to see you!

Gah purple, didn't see that in time but its the one I've just bought full price!!! You sound like you're doing so well with the feeding despite the tongue tie. I know you're uber-qualified but sometimes its much harder to apply it to yourself iykwim. When DD was falling like a plank I had to ask a colleague what to do, embarrassingly, and they all agreed so much harder when its you!!

Rant alert:
I am actually weeing 4-5 times a night, maybe even 6... Blush If I can make 2 hours without a wee It's good... I am vast, heartburny, pelvic pain finally here properly, exhausted, properly sore, regular bh that will never come to anything, rib pain, hormonal, struggling with DD. And ridiculously jealous of someone on the twins thread who's just gone into labour Blush Blush . It's so ridiculous because she's 33 weeks and so prem, and i always did, still do, still delighted, to be at term to have two big healthy babies which will help with bf etc etc but i can't tell you how far away next Wed seems... And I'm so jittery about something going wrong between now and then.... (Also just like to say you see biscuits, I told you you'd have your baby earlier than I have mine- 37+1 today).

Shall note you down for having baby same day as me scream and an afternoon delivery too like me :-) . Sympathy for the puking from a fellow puker...

pomme that sounds like exactly how often my DD fed. Go you!!

PurpleWithaBlueBun · 30/03/2012 20:41

Dream it is harder when it is yours, also for me I know the worst outcomes, so adds a layer of worry. I am not uber qualified by a long shot! I would say I am fairly knowledgeable in basics...

Are you having skin to skin in theatre? Or made a plan? Might make you feel easier to make one if you haven't? When I was struggling at the end I would think about how once I was holding my baby it would seem like the struggling end bit was actually no time at all. This tactic has always helped me.

Did you get a nappy bag in the end?

Munx why would you stay away? Shock That is proper preggers that is!

Scream believe it or not but it has just been this week we have thought properly about it and the last two days we have been using it very occasionally, usually he is the baby boy...

jaggythistle · 30/03/2012 21:53

hi brookers.

sorry I've been missing, have tried to keep up. was away overnight somewhere with almost no signal Shock and have been really tired out by work this week. just 2 days to survive...

i have been so shit that my workmates have had to look after me and help. partly because of some lifting and carrying bits, but also one lovely person just spent part of her evening catching up on some of my data entry for me so I'm not so far behind. also some others have done wee bits for me here and there - i must look v big and pathetic! i do work with some v nice people, makes up for the few lazy annoying ones!

need to get to bed soon. looks like I've not escaped all the germs, woke up with sore throat and am all blocked up too.

sorry for super whine. Blush

Wants3 · 30/03/2012 22:39

Just back from my meal out, it was a laugh and the food was nice. I am going to run a bath and go to bed now though. Just me and ds2 at home tonight as ds1 is at a party! Lie in tomorrow and then skyping with DH hopefully.

musicalmrs · 31/03/2012 09:04

Morning all!

Finished teaching... hurrah! I only have two days left now, in the office in London (for admin bits and year end) then I'm free! And some work to do from home, but that's easy to do! Feels very strange!

Jaggy, hurrah for only two days left too! I've really struggled with this last week, and I'm not as far along as you, so I'm impressed by the fact you're still going.

Jen, that whole ordeal sounds awful :( So glad it was a UTI and nothing more serious though - hope you're feeling a lot better now?

Munx wonderful to see you! Please feel free to stay :) Having other brookers to talk to has stopped me from going quite so mental throughout my pregnancy - and has definitely stopped me from mentalling to DH quite so much! I've also found the advice invaluable, and being able to hear the experiences of people further ahead than me has been very helpful - especially as I have no friends/relatives who are PG/recently PG to give me advice!

Ninja, hurrah for the in laws bringing all the stuff back that you lent out! Hope you have a nice weekend - hope the fact they're staying in a hotel makes it significantly less stressful for you!

Scream, you seem to be having such a horrible time of it - you should really have a break from all these symptoms :(

We think we've just sent off the last bit of paperwork that should allow exchange and completion to go ahead on our house! Still don't have an estimated date for completion but we're hoping end of April. We've had to give notice on the place we're living at now, so we have to be out by the end of May. All a bit scary but I'm trying to avoid all the stress at the moment..!

Baby wise I think we have everything apart from wet bags/nappy storage system for the reusables, and a moses basket - which I think will be coming when the inlaws visit in a week or so. At least everything's vaguely organised on the baby front, even if where we'll be living when it's born is completely up in the air..!

Hope all the brooking babies are doing well, and very excited about the impending arrivals this week!

pommedechocolat · 31/03/2012 09:18

Hurray for maternity leave jaggy and musical!!

We're having some kind of five week growth spurt over here - eek!!

ScreamIfYouWantToGoFaster · 31/03/2012 11:46

Yay for Musical and Jaggy being within sniffing distance of mat leave! Woohoo! Sorry you're feeling poorly Jaggy, hopefully the worst of it will pass you by, especially once you're able to get some more rest. Yay for Musical's house purchase going so well! Exciting!

Fishcake....?! Oh Fishcake......?! Where are you?! When you're due in only 3 days time you really can't vanish for a whole day without getting our hopes up!! Grin

Pomme good luck with the extra growth spurt! I hope that by now Abbie's tummy is a little bigger than it was for the last growth spurt? So maybe you'll get a slightly longer break between feeds? I don't know if that's correct or not, but whatever happens I hope you have an easier time of it!

Purple it's so cute to imagine you just calling your LO 'baby boy'. Grin You have plenty of time to finalise his name anyway.

Dream you sound sooooooooooo uncomfortable right now! Every time I think about how much you're coping with I feel bad for complaining about my symptoms. You have done AMAZINGLY well! A truly inspirational No Brooker! Just a few short days to go and your perfectly cooked little men will be here! (Then this whole pg nightmare will be over too! Woohoo!) Hang in there! Thanks for saving me a spot later on the same day - I can't tell you how much I'd like to take that time slot!!!!!!!!!

I am officially 36 weeks today - eeeek! I was so convinced before that I would have this baby during week 36, now I'm desperately hanging on until Wed!!

Wants3 · 31/03/2012 11:48

Hi, I have just been looking at another thread where someone said they were 33+3 and due on 28 th April! That can't be right can it? I am 33+2 and due on 17 th may. I started to think I had counted ahead of my self and am not really as pregnant as I thought.musical we are fairly close arent we, please tell be I am not going mad!:)

ScreamIfYouWantToGoFaster · 31/03/2012 11:53

I'm due on 28th April exactly and I'm definitely 36 weeks today - so you're not going mad Wants!
