Scarlet that sounds super stressful! I hope your poorly DD and DH get better soon! You're a saint for doing the builder-tea runs! If a builder ever asks me for tea I always offer to run a power extension cable out to wherever they're working and they can then bring their own kettle, mugs and tea and sort themselves out! It's not just the tedium of constantly having to serve tea that gets to me, it's also the way builders wreck any mugs, etc that you give them!

Pomme I'm glad your injections are finishing up today. I'm just curious if Too or any other elcs brookers have been put on Fragmin following their surgeries. I'm still hoping to avoid unnecessary injections when as I understand it there are alternative ways to reduce the risk of clotting!

Biscuits the consultant did call me very briefly on Friday to explain that he would prefer to have our discussion face-to-face and to check if I was okay to come in for an appt. I thought it was really considerate of him to call and ask rather than just dismissing my request for a telephone discussion out-of-hand. He said he'd call me back on Monday to arrange the appt, but never did. So this morning I've left a vm with his secretary to see if I can arrange the appt through her instead - I'm sure the consultant is busy enough without having to call patients just to agree appt times!

Oh Scarlet you have it all on today don't you my lovely Sad.

Any chance you could get a nap in if DS does or is it too noisy with the builders?

Biscuitsandtea · 06/03/2012 12:20

Or, Scarlet, you could tell the builders you only have raspberry leaf tea left - that should bring the number of tea runs down a bit WinkGrin

TooImmatureTurtleDoves · 06/03/2012 12:34

Bloody dog...the estate painter arrived at the door 3 weeks early wanting to know when it would be convenient to come and paint over the stain on the living room ceiling. Dog went mental. Then of course the man had to come in and examine the ceiling and my hospital bag toiletries are all set out on the coffee table (thanks DH), there are damp sheets draped over every door to dry and the kitchen is a tip. And he's just planning on trying to stick the loose section of paper back up, which I'm not convinced will work. They're coming back at 1.30 to start painting and I just wanted to tell them to piss off and come back in 3 weeks' time! I'm fairly sure if I do that we'll never see them again, though, so I'm stuck with it. The dog has been barking at every tiny little noise since he left, and I was all stressed because I was wearing a short dressing gown over scruffy joggers with no top on underneath and I was petrified my dressing gown would fall open. And my hair's not brushed and I have a giant spot on my chin. Dog is probably picking up the vanity/embarrassment vibes from me.

Sorry, rant over. Scarlet, I don't know how you put up with constant builders in your space. And with a poorly DS and DH on top of that!

Scream, I have my first steroid jab tomorrow morning - I'll tell you how it feels! Brooking for your consultant to follow through with an appt sharpish. My normal consultant is the one who will be doing the CS, so I've had all my appts with her and then luckily she was on the theatre rotation for this Friday.

ScreamIfYouWantToGoFaster · 06/03/2012 12:57

Sounds like a frustrating morning Too! I always seem to be topless under a robe whenever people turn up unexpectedly and DH is out!! You immediately start imagining a huge gust of wind is going to randonly spring up INSIDE your house and blow open the robe! Hmm Or maybe that's just me Blush

Fingers crossed that whatever they end up doing actually works, and that it turns out to be a good thing to have got this out of the way before your LO arrives! Hope the dog is less excited on seeing the painters for the second time!!

Good luck for your injection tomorrow! I'm sure it'll be fine, I'm just a big fraidy cat re injections so don't listen to me!

No chance of DS having a nap Biscuits, it's his room they're working in at the moment and he has no bed! His room's a building site and every night we have to make it safe and bring his bed back in Sad. Bless him for not batting an eyelid and going to sleep every night as normal. The new nursery is in the same state so he can't sleep in there and our room is crammed full of stuff from the 2 rooms being worked on, we have to move stuff off our bed every night and bring it downstairs and take it back up again in the morning, so there is no chance whatsoever of any day naps happening in this house for anyone! Almost turned into a bit of a rant there...

If there was a smiley thing for steam coming out of ears, that would be me at the moment. Good job my blood pressure is generally on the low side, it doesn't matter if it gets higher from all this stress!

Sorry to hear you're also having a stressful morning Too.

Scream I like your thinking re the builder's tea Grin it is soooo tedious and I would happily do that. Unfortuntately my DH would be horrified if I actually did, he thinks you get a better standard if you make them constant drinks as they would be more inclined to go above and beyond. I fumed at him the other week when I saw him take a plateful of my favourite chocolate biscuits upstairs for the plumber Angry. He won't dare do that again!

Biscuitsandtea · 06/03/2012 13:17

Oh goodness Scarlet - what a nightmare with the daily furniture removals!!! I do hope it's all over soon. Although I would also draw the line at chocolate biscuits for the builders!

Remember - keep your eye on the end goal - its going to be gorgeous when it's done. Smile

I have to confess to a bit of a Grin at Too and Scream flashing your workmen in their revealing robes! Maybe this should be another tactic for Scarlet to maximise builder productivity...... Grin

But I am sorry the painters are coming at an inconvenient time for you Too - hope they do a proper job and it's all sorted for you ahead of Bean's arrival on Friday.

Man, I really wish DS still napped - could really do with one myself today Sad. Can't really grumble though as we do at least have beds to nap in. You and DS would be welcome to come and nap here Scarlet Smile Especially for chocolate biscuits Smile

Biscuitsandtea · 06/03/2012 13:21

And I've gone up to 4, yes four cups of RLT now - Gah! And as the number of cups increases I find I barely have time to drink anything else Sad.

On the topic of RLT, I am led to believe that it helps your uterus shrink back after birth too - how many cups a day and for how long do you have to stick with it? Anyone know?

scarletfingernail · 06/03/2012 13:35

Aw thanks for the offer Biscuits, that's so sweet of you. We'll be round in 30 minutes? Grin Kidding of course.

You've just reminded me about RLT. I've not had any since Friday. I find it so boaky, but I really need to get back on it.

Loopyhasanotherbean · 06/03/2012 13:51

too yes induction or CS was mentioned with DS but i was meant to see the consultant a couple of days before i reached 40 weeks, but the meeting never happened as he came early so i've no idea what decision they would have made. Scar rupture is another thing i am worried about, but i didn't think you were allowed to be induced if you've previously had a CS? or have i been misinformed?

too/scarlet i have a consultant appointment later this month, will be just over 16 weeks, which i guess is why its on my mind so much. My midwife is not interested in talking about the options, just told me to see the birth afterthoughts people and that i'd be seeing a consultant as i'm high risk (because of EMCS, because i have BMI 32.5 and because i had a major PPH with DS) and to tell her what is decided, and that home birth wouldn't be supported and if i decided on a VBAC i would be continually monitored. Frankly she is a bitch, saw her several times when expecting DS and she had me in tears on more than one occasion.

scream re injections, the name fragmin doesn't sound familiar to me. I had to have a daily injection after CS with DS, but it was only for 5 days, to prevent DVT's. And i know it was definitely 5 days, as due to complications that is how long we were kept in hospital so the staff there did the injections, and all i had to take home was painkillers and iron tablets. I do remember that the first day didn't hurt (must have still been dosed up from GA and all the other stuff) but my god they hurt on the other days - they were less painful in my shoulder but some of the staff insisted that they had to be done into my thigh which killed. And they weren't optional either.

biscuit yes, the G&A ran out twice, it didn't help my mood/stress levels when midwife said to midwife 2 who had just returned with the one tank "you've only got 1 tank??" as i straight away started to worry about whether it would last, given midwife 1's tone of voice... needless to say i was very happy to get into the ambulance as they had a very big, very full tank of G&A!! Another comical moment that just came to me, midwife 1 told midwife 2 to call for the ambulance, and midwife 2 asked her what number should she call....queue midwife 1 through gritted teeth saying 9-9-9....followed by midwife 2 saying "oh, i thought maybe you had a special number to call"....

thanks for the wishes re DS, bless him he is very unwell, went to nursery thursday afternoon, threw up in cot overnight and hasn't stopped being sick since. He has reflux which really isn't helping matters. Friday was the worst, 30 times in all (DP asked me to update him so i sent him a text every time he threw up so was easy to keep a tally :) ) He isn't being as sick now as he is managing to keep water down, and we've started giving him watered down cows milk on hv advice, but he hasn't kept anything solid down as yet, although he did just have a few bites of dried toast before his bottle, and is now asleep so perhaps he might keep that down. He is meant to be on medication for his reflux but he hasn't had either since Thursday as each time i've tried, he has brought it back up again. Open to any suggestions as to anything else worth trying - hv said biscuits, but he threw that up, and won't eat meat at the moment which was the other suggestion. DP's parents are currently driving down from Manchester to help out, as this is the 5th day, and i'm really not coping with the smells, and DP is out of the house from 7.15am to 7.50pm and whilst he has been great at sorting washing etc when he gets in, it's wearing him out too. A side effect seems to be that he is now doing one massive poo each morning, way more than his nappy can cope with, and a much wetter consistency than normal (not runny but not firm, sorry if TMI) so it's oozing everywhere, and i have a terrible gag reflex, and whilst i don't suffer really with morning sickness, one whiff of poo like this or sick and i really struggle not to throw up myself. Having been ill for the last 2 months with a nasty cold, then a cough, then a cough that returned with a vengance which meant i was lying awake coughing most of the night, i haven't slept properly since i fell pregnant, and now all of this and i'm an exhausted wreck, and have so little energy, so really hoping that the second trimester leads to a boost of energy!

Re RLT, i took the capsules, but only whilst pregnant, i didn't know there was a benefit to taking them after the birth?

scarlet it sounds like the work will be worth it, but it sounds like you are having a hell of an upheaval twice a day moving everything, fingers crossed they will soon be finished and you can take things easier! And DS can have naps again in his room!

Hope other DC's get well soon and musical hope your DH improves soon too!

Biscuitsandtea · 06/03/2012 13:58

Shock (and a little bit Grin) loopy at the mw / 999 conversation! Not funny at the time of course.

I think DS might think he lives in a musical. He is currently rifling through the drawer of crayons / paper singing a lovely narrative about looking for different colours and how many he's dropped on the floor at any one time.... Hmm

jenfraggle · 06/03/2012 14:25

Well it sounds like we need to get the pom poms out again as there are a few of us suffering at the moment. I ended up in A & E this morning after falling over in work. X Ray confirmed that I haven't broken anything but I've sprained my foot and am home with crutches. I only started work on Thursday so feel really bad for letting them down

Biscuitsandtea · 06/03/2012 14:27

Oh Jen you poor thing! Sad Thank goodness you're ok in as much as nothing broken. Hope you heal up quickly though xx

DreamingOfPeace · 06/03/2012 14:30

OMG loopy, your poor, poor DS. I have no suggestions, other than my DD will drink squash/juice much better than water so that's what I give her, and tell myself at least it;s not in a bottle and sipped at all day Blush- I wonder if he'd drink anything 'special' like that?

Your first experience sounds horrendous... All of it- the being told you're not in labour as you're talking (my friend also having her first homebirth for first baby at 38 weeks was also told this, but she insisted, both of them are anaesthetists and just said 'no, she is' and I think they still only examined her as both parents were medical iykwim), the running out of gas and air and the GA EMCS and apgar of 1- how frightening. A big part of my issue is fear of it going wrong again. As I work with disabled children, I also see or know of every child in our area disabled through oxygen deprivation at birth etc, and have wierdly over-the-top ideas of how frequent it is... None of this helps me! Oh, and I also thought it was no induction after CS in case of scar rupture- sure that's what hawthers was told??

And what?! Injections after CS?! They will be fragmin I'm sure- maybe they called it heparin though loopy?

oh crikey should I man up and do it naturally?!?! I'm freaking out over CS...

Horrified at 5 weeks before picking up DD. My 'normal' is pick her out of her cot, carry her to our room, read a book in bed, or play, while I come to (!), get us dressed, carry her downstairs (she never crawled and can't get up and down stairs herself- she will walk up and down, but that involves bending over to hold either both her hands or under her armpits, depends how sensible she's being- I did try briefly teaching her to come down backwards- wildly unsuccessful and I haven't persevered so not an option at the min) Lift into highchair for breakfast, lift out of highchair (today she insisted on being held while I washed up her bib/breakfast things), then she often wants carrying around for a bit, then lift into car seat in high car to go out somewhere.... carry around til she 'warms up' wherever we've gone.... I rarely go more than a few min without picking her up... If DH is off its all fine, or one of my parents are up, the car/pushchair stuff should be ok if someone's with me, but the morning cot/stairs/highchair is unavoidable... Panic, panic. my parents each live 50 miles away, so they're not really available at 7:30am when DD is getting up, and DH often left house by then. oh, more panic....

scarlet, hope you have maybe packed DH and DS off to bed together and are having at least a peaceful brew...?! My dad would agree with your DH on builders and tea. Smile . I do feel for you, all sounds too much. When I have nights like that- at min, it's my reflux/ bladder getting me up I often get the 'can't cope' feeling the next day. When it was all illlness here the other week my dad came twince and my mum had to take a day off work to come and help...blush] You're doing really well, thank goodness your DS is such a sweetie and still goes to sleep in his half-finished room ok. It'll all be worth it! And surely better now than with 2 children...?

I heard on a twin forum RLT is not advised in multiple pregnancies- where's purple who might know why?! biscuits I didn't take it properly afterwards, maybe the odd cup last time but still had good uterus-shrinkage- maybe it did help?!

Good luck for steroid injection not hurting a jot tomorrow too. Your dog sounds like a character- what kind of dog is he?

Hi scream- forgot what I was going to say to you...

in fact, forgotten anything else I was going to say, but as this is a huge post anyway, I'll just wave and slink off again....

hawthers · 06/03/2012 17:37

too those steroid injections smart as do the anti dvt injections which DH had to give me.

Will answer other questions/comments when on the night shift.

ScreamIfYouWantToGoFaster · 06/03/2012 18:27

Hawthers do they smart like blood test jabs? Or worse like dentist injections? Or worse than that?!

Where do people get this crazy idea that c-sections are an easy option?!

OP posts:
scarletfingernail · 06/03/2012 19:03

Ouch jen that's not good! I mean it's good that you've not broken anything, but rubbish you're now on crutches. Will you be able to go into work, or will you have to take some time off?

How much time off is your DH planning to take off dream? Is there any way he'll be able to tag some annual leave onto his paternity leave? Or is there anyone else who can stay with you temporarily if he has to go back to work before you're able to lift easily? Have you considered hiring a mother's help type person? Not the same as a nanny, but someone who can help you with the childcare, ie do the lifting, make sure your DD is fed, entertain DD, and general tidying etc?

DreamingOfPeace · 06/03/2012 22:55

Urgh. A mammoth Bedtime Battle tonight. Completely overtired child by the end who just couldn't go to sleep... Finally won at 10:15pm, so there went my early night. Of course, this will never be happening with the twins thrown into the mix hmm

poor you jen, hope you heal quickly. This pg laxity is no fun...

DH will be off for 2.5 weeks. He can't take more as only allowed 2 GPs on leave and all booked after that. My mum is retiring end of April so may be able to rope her in. We are currently advertising for a mothers help for 2 days a week, DH is off one, hoping to bribe/beg/force parents to do one other day each at the beginning... You're being so nice after your dreadful day I feel all emotional at how selfless you are scarlet

Anyway, I'm totally overtired too, must follow DD and finally get to bed myself.

Whinge over, sorry guys!

(scream, we're not worried about the anti-clotting injections, piece of piss, we'll barely notice them, we'll be fine with our ELCS. Honestly Hmm Wink looks foward to hawthers unpdate on the reality...)

ScreamIfYouWantToGoFaster · 06/03/2012 23:17

Thanks Dream! I'll try to man up!

OP posts:
hawthers · 07/03/2012 03:22

biscuits great news re term such s relief I'm sure
too i got paracetamol and DM anti inflammatory which was the moneyshot. I counted down the hours to that one. I managed a short walk at around day 4 buy getting in and out of the car was pretty painful for a week.
scream I didn't have a wound drain, had a stitch that was removed on day 5, def had sufficient painkillers. They seemed to give them out like smarties quite freely. The injections def smarted but hey ho
loop lorry your first birth sounds incredibly hard, picking up your 22 month old will be pretty much impossible Sad. My pct won't induce after cs because of scar rupture risk but think this varies between pcts and worth asking what they can do if you want a vbac ad I'm pretty sure they didn't do all they could for me ie offer to break waters.
dream sorry poppet but there is no way you'll be able to carry your dd. And with twin newborns you wouldn't be able to give that much attention anyway ifvyou had a bh si might be worth trying to break the carrying now?

Did I answer them all? Anything else give me a shout x

pommedechocolat · 07/03/2012 04:35

On the heparin injections my top tips are to do it yourself, to do it slowly and to make sure you're holding a good wedge of flesh to do it into. Alternate sides daily and never inject into the same site. Holding the needle at a diagonal angle can help too.

Hope your ankle mends quickly jen!

pommedechocolat · 07/03/2012 04:39

P.s. excited for you too ! Just two more days!

jaggythistle · 07/03/2012 07:01

aw sorry to hear about more poorly brookers and dc. not quite a&e standard here, but have managed to squash a toe and have a lovely blue nail now. also got a cold, which is not helping with sleep or tiredness. feel a bit washed out!

re after CS, i had the fragmin injections, the MW did mine in my thigh when she came to visit when i got home. i don't remember them as too bad. i didn't have DS to try and lift but i remember trying to take him a walk in the pram and being tired out in a few mins! i think getting out of bed is what i remember the most, and hugging a pillow to sneeze!
i had paracetamol, codeine and non steroidal anti inflammatory which I've forgotten the name of. remember to take your pain killers at regular intervals ladies!

i forget who asked but i don't have strong preferences for vbac, I'm just going to try to stay at home and relax as much as i can. I'm worried I'll be rushed into sweeps or water breaking, but will see what doc says.

right, better get ready for work before DS wakes up!

TooImmatureTurtleDoves · 07/03/2012 09:17

Oops, my appt isn't until 11. I thought it was at 10. Turns out it was 11am in Ward 10 - doh! I went in the car with DH (and dog, because I didn't want to leave him unsupervised with the painters just in case - he's a whippet x Staffie, Dream), with the idea that we'd get to DH's work at about 8.30, I'd head over to the hospital for roughly 9 and go get myself a cup of tea and wait until 10. However, waiting about, with the dog in the car, until 11 seemed like just far too long so am home again.

Jen, hope your ankle is better soon - ouch! I sprained my ankle at work once too and it took a ridiculously long time to heal and stop puffing up at the slightest provocation.

Pomme, there will be no problem with finding good wodges of flesh to inject! If I have to, that is - no one has mentioned it yet, so I'll ask today.

Hawthers, that's very interesting - I shall avoid the car for the first week, apart from coming home.

2 days to go!
