Can't participate in the Great Pram Debate as I've been given one from BIL, but as for childcare - we have a bit of a problem.

When DD2 was born 6 years ago DD1 was at PILs for the weekend when I went into labour so just stayed there - back then she used to spend a lot of time with them, but FIL is now ill, in pain and bedridden so they hardly go there any more.

My mum is back in the UK so she is out.

Which leaves us with parents of the DDs' school friends. Actually this is probably an ideal option - there are at least 2 sets who I firmly believe I could call up at any hour and drop the kids round on the way to hospital or ask to come and sit with ours till the morning and then drop at school. If labour begins during the day then this is all the more feasible, and if I don't give birth in the night then DH will be free to pick them up for the night and bring them home. (Hospital stays are still at least 1-2 overnights here, and as I've needed transfusions after both previous births I'm realistically looking at 3-4 days in). I'm hoping said parents are as wonderful as they have proven to be in the past...

skeletonfishbonesandlilacs · 19/10/2011 19:54

re fish..dont eat me.....:)

ParsleyLion1 · 19/10/2011 20:30

re fish :o

shonnomanom · 19/10/2011 20:34

I dont eat fish at all. However I make sure my butter and bread have Omega 3 in them.
Ghost I love to lick the spoon after making a cake. Its the best part!

When the time comes Dd will go over to my parents house. She is there every weekday so she should be fine there.

ParsleyLion1 · 19/10/2011 21:01

Been to my first aqua class tonight really enjoyed it Met another pregnant lady there. The same instructor runs a Pilates class on sat mornings so might also try that.
Cat is sitting on bump. Bump is kicking cat. Cat either a) can't feel her or b) doesn't care.

ParsleyLion1 · 19/10/2011 21:10

thanks ghost found it Here's a link re the Bugaboo bee wheel issues

skeletonfishbonesandlilacs · 19/10/2011 21:51

I haven't read back over any posts tonight but please can I just say in a self indulgent moment that ....

OOOOOOWWWWW OW OW OW. My back and ribs are absolutely killing me tonight. It hurts..a lot. OW.

THe old rib pain that I said hadn't played up this time (I can't remember which of you was suffering with rib pain-sorry) has now started to and it's just as horrible as I remember. It's very unpleasant. Combined with SPD shite in my back I could just curl up in a ball and weep gently tonight. Off to bed because i simply can't get comortable anywhere else.

Oeisha · 19/10/2011 22:05

Hey guys. Re: fish. Mostly it is the mercury they're asking you to limit the intake of BUT, please be ware that fish like mackerel and tuna have high levels of histamines in them from 'death' (bacterial growth), too much of this can lead to 'scomboid poisoning'. So ideally, you should limit your contact (as in skin-to-skin) with these fish and never eat a 'warm' fish unless you've literally just dragged it out the sea and banged it on the head whilst pg. Once cooked, totally fine if dealt with when fresh IYSWIM...it's one of the many reasons why I'm not allowed in the fish counter at work.

If worried about brain development, and you dislike fish, then you could always take a pg friendly omega suppliment with dinner (I'm still taking pregnacare plus). Flaxseed oil is also high in omega 3. Nuts, seeds and leafy green veg also contain convertable fatty acids, so you could just up your intake of these too. Eggs have omega 3 too.

giraffe I'm going for the iCandy peach. Have opted for Black Jack...though was tempted by Sweet Pea...but decided Black Jack was more "practical" (as in, could get other blankets etc to go with it). Def. wasn't going to be pushing about a tomato. Seems such a shame that the peach only comes in the 3 colours.

ghost If it's any help, my dwarf status (5ft3) is the opposite of DH's giraffe status (6ft1 - that's tall to me), so took him to test the Peach and Chameleon. I see someone's hooked you up with the bugaboo issue stuff.

capy not that fond of the stokky either myself. Mainly because it's 'built up' in the pram bit (from what I remember), and they seem to be suggesting using the car seat bit is ok for baby to sleep in. It's not, not for more than 90mins. All sellers of carseats are supposed to advise that baby spends no more than 90mins at a time in a carseat before a decent leg-kicking-possibility break...though it does at least look like the car-seat bit does recline fully. I dunno. I dismissed a lot of pram-style ones because they were 'built up' to look nice and 'cosy' but don't like the restriction...BUT! Hey, if it works for you... I would recommend pushing a few about first. I ruled out some I liked the look of fairly quickly as I'm a dwarf and couldn't see over the hoods when pushing them.

parsley My cats seem unphased by Abi booting them too. Abi also seems to like them purring when they're sat on her, odd critters, the bunch of 'em. Also jealous of your aquanatal. Really want to go, but there's no one trained/willing in my area, despite the pool timetabling it in. Not willing to travel for 2h (1 each way) to get to the next neatest class.

fish beastly back ache is here too. Doesn't sound as bad as yours though. Hope you get some rest!

As I though tonight...I didn't get my time off section, or I did, it was just spent cleaning up someone else's crap...again. Ah well, at least I got a bit of patronising and pointless compulsory training done.

Karmanna · 19/10/2011 22:37

Re prams, we bought a travel system that's fairly new so couldn't really find any reviews. It's called the Beep Baby Elegance travel system and I think it's from an Irish company. It comes with a buggy, car seat, carry cot, and changing bag and it was only £315 new from an Ebay outlet - normally £400 so we got a bit of a bargain. It arrived last week (got the red one) and it's really easy to manouvre (and dh with his limited DIY skills had no problems putting it together) and it looks really nice - suppose it's like a poor man's Quinny...

The only downside is that there's not much room for any shopping underneath, but I think that might be a good thing in the long run as it'll save me money!! :o

Moobee · 20/10/2011 06:26

Hello everyone! There's lots of new people here since I last wrote

giraffe I am so sorry to hear about your dad.

We've started house renovations in earnest so the house is a tip. We currently don't have a kitchen and the living room contains a flat pack kitchen and all te contents of the old kitchen. We bought a microwave to tide us over but there's no room to unpack it so the box is a very expensive table. parsley I feel your pain!

I also was carrying a stool out to the builders and managed to catch a doorway and jammed the stool into the top of my bump. :( I went to the midwife and luckily it looks like I caught the muscles just above the uterus rather than the actual bump so the midwife said not to worry that I'd hurt the baby or uterus (but of course I do anyway). Baby is still kicking at least, that's the main thing!

ag123 · 20/10/2011 07:04

ghost we are waiting for the new icandy strawberry to come out which is apparently beg-mid November. It's meant to be quite light-weight like the cherry, you can have the carrycot attachment for the first 6 months so they can properly lie flat (unlike the bugaboo bee which only goes nearly flat), and then once it's in buggy mode you can fold it properly without having to take the seat off. It also stands up vertically when folded which will certainly be good for us storage-wise. It's on the icandy website already and if you google it there's a little demonstration video from 'Which?'. I think John Lewis said it was going to be £450 + £75 for the flavour pack + £95 or something like that for the carrycot...worth a look...

MakesCakesWhenStressed · 20/10/2011 08:14

Oeisha - wonder if that's why I've been craving almonds by the bucket load recently? Just can't get enough of them, maybe my body's trying to supplement its Omega 3

Moobee if you have a day off you are more than welcome to come over here and take advantage of my fully working kitchen. It'd be really nice to have the company, tbh, as long as you don't mind cats or crap TV because they're my life support system atm!

I'm totally calling the M today to get the number of he physio dept. The pain in my lower bump and groin is getting worse every day to the point where it's seriously disturbing my sleep now (anything that wakes you at midnight and 3am and makes you cry is serious in my book) and i want to see someone about it NOW. No idea whether I'll cry or rant on the phone, but what with the exhaustion, I'd say the odds are on tears.

Oh - and DH has a cold, which of course means he is dying. Bloody man flu, I know colds make you feel wretched, I do, and I sympathise, but I want some sympathy too

So fish - let's start a self-pity party. It's in this corner, everyone gets a bump bag each and there is lots of homemade cake.

MakesCakesWhenStressed · 20/10/2011 08:15

Parsley - when my bump kicks the cat I just get a look like "would you ever sit still for a while woman?!"

1stBumpityBump · 20/10/2011 08:43

Hi Ladies ...
I'm a newbie and this is my first post so be gentle! :D
I'm due on the 8th Jan and counting down the weeks till my 1st bubba arrives! I thought I'd start off in true MN style with a bit of a rant!...
We are in the process of doing up the spare room as a nursery, the plasterer came yesterday and did the ceiling, said he would be back at 8am today to do the walls, so i got up early (after a crap sleep, which mad me want to stay in bed!) and he hasn't even turned up yet! Or called to say why he is late ... Grrr!
Anyway... Hope you all are well!

addictediam · 20/10/2011 09:14

Bumpity the first rule of having builders when pregnant - never get up specially for them! They are never on time or apologise for being late, its like they have their own clocks that just dont match up with the rest of the world!

Welcome

ParsleyLion1 · 20/10/2011 09:16

Welcome Bumpity :)

Moobee the only advice I can give is to try to get an ETA for the kitchen being in. Mentally it makes it more bearable. I insisted on putting all the old kitchen stuff in storage as I couldn't bear the idea of sitting in a sea of boxes for an undetermined number of weeks. I'm attempting to get my stuff back 5 November so hopefully it will all be finished by then.

Once it's all in I intend to make some of cakes cakes :) I've been very jealous of those with baking facilities.

Oeisha unfortunately it's not aquanatal - we haven't got any of those in my borough, it's just aqua but the instructor was very good for the pregnant people. It's made my PGP a bit sore today but I think it's just muscular in a good way go will keep an eye on it.

The cat moved off in the end, I think he got fed up :o

ParsleyLion1 · 20/10/2011 09:18

PS - I've been told that almonds are v good for heartburn. Any evidence of this being true?

MakesCakesWhenStressed · 20/10/2011 09:26

No idea, but I haven't had heartburn recently, so maybe they are...?

I've found milk to be the best thing for me, but will try almonds first next time and see if they do anything.

Good news - ringing people and crying at them gets you a same-day physio appt. Yay.

1stBumpityBump · 20/10/2011 09:49

Addicted I have called him ... Apparently he is fixing a leak in his tenants house - fair enough. He said he lost my number so couldn't call me [hhmm]. Anyway he said he will come tomorrow but i will not be getting up early for him! And DF has just called from work to say that a decorator is coming round 'at some point this morning!' Great!

Fryn · 20/10/2011 09:58

Hi ladies, and welcome bumpity!

At home feeling sorry for myself today as the first pregnancy cold has finally arrived (made worse by the fact that I can't be bothered to turn over Helicopter Heroes - who watches this twaddle? (other than me?)) I've been downing hot water with ginger, lemon and honey but i have a vague recollection that we shouldn't have too much ginger in pregnancy - please tell me I've totally made that up?

Re fish, I think tuna's fine, but only 1 portion a week if it's fresh, or 2 small tins. White fish and salmon are fine (although DH is a "proper" vegetarian so no fish in the house for me, so I'm on pregnacare plus).

Re buggies I'll be reusing DD's Bee for this one - luckily the 2009 model, so no wheel problems (those ones had brake problems instead, but all fixed thanks to some attachment thing!) It's such a good buggy, and lies flat enough for a newborn. Perfect for buses, if you ever have to use them.

Getting a bit fretful that G2 is being very quiet - has anyone else who's been ill found that?

cakes excellent use of tears. Good work!

Fryn · 20/10/2011 10:00

oh and bumpity a friend of mine has workmen in at the moment, and she got a text from one of them (who thought he was texting the other one) calling her a slag for not sorting out a parking permit! Apparently she's had no problems with his punctuality since then...

MakesCakesWhenStressed · 20/10/2011 10:04

Fryn - ASAIK you've totally made that up about the ginger - they recommend it for 'morning' sickness :)

And yes, Sproglet is always quieter when I'm poorly.

1stBumpityBump · 20/10/2011 10:13

Fryn I would be furious! ... The decorator has just turned up and I know him, he's really nice so can't complain really :)

As to barge jump in the buggy topic, I have a Mamas & Papas Ultima 9in1 .... And it is huge, will be buying a new car before baby is here so I am going to have to find one with a huge boot! Got it for £300 with all the extras (should have been about £800 new) and it had only been used for 6 weeks, the lady i bought it off had a small car and it didn't fit so they bought a Quinny. Anyone have any experience with the Ultima? It seems really easy to manouvre (sp?) but will see how practical it is when LO arrives!

Karmanna · 20/10/2011 10:14

Morning ladies and welcome bumpity!!

Cakes, nice work - good luck at the physio!

Fryn, I do hope you made that up as I baked some gingerbread last night and had about five two for breakfast!

So just found out we're dressing up for Halloween at work (for charity). Not the best time to try and fit into some slinky witches outfit... Any ideas apart from painting my bump as a pumpkin? [hgrin]

MakesCakesWhenStressed · 20/10/2011 10:17

Dammit Karmanna that was totally the suggestion I was going to make. You could always paint it as a cauldron instead... :-P
