Morning all!
How is everyone?

NotFromConcentrate · 20/10/2011 09:55

Morning all.

I'm feeling a bit sorry for myself this morning; i got an email at 5pm last night confirming I have been selected for redundancy. What's annoying me most is that I submitted a bloody good proposal and they dismissed it out of hand. What's become more and more evident throughout the process is their attempts to save my job were entirely disingenuous and they never had any intention of retaining my position. Now I have to travel to Manchester tomorrow and give them my 'comments'. I shall probably take a knife, for the atmosphere.

Aside from that, all is well here. Baby is super-active, which I lovely but he still takes me by surprise!

Tonight I am going to get the laptop out and actually reply to others' posts.
My memory is to rubbish to retain everything and then post on my phone!

Notfromconcentrate sorry to hear that Sad. What a bloody nightmare. They sound like they've handled it quite badly so hope the meeting tomorrow isn't too awful.

Makka hello! Hope all good with you.

Santa I'm glad to hear that things haven't got worse. I am sure it's frustrating to not have a definitive answer but it's great that you are being closely monitored and hopefully everything will be fine.

NFC That is really shitty. Sorry to hear that/ Make sure you take lots of notes and ask as many questions as possible. Do you think it is related in any way to your pregnancy? (sorry if you've covered this already, my brain has died today and I am struggling to type nevermind remember anything!!!)

Good effort on setting up the FB group. Can't seem to work out how to join on my iPhone but will try and sneak round the work firewall and do it that way. My initials are PG.

LilPud · 20/10/2011 11:06

Morning all - hope you are all well.

So happy to read everyones good scan results (and jealous still 3 weeks for me)
Santa glad your result was positive and fingers crossed it stays that way.

NFC sorry to hear about your work situation I thought being pregnant meant employers were meant to tread carefully with pregnant employees. Hope you at least get a decent pay off.

Norfolkbumpkin · 20/10/2011 12:47

NFC - Sorry to hear about your stressful work situation, really not needed when you are supposed to be keeping relaxed.

Re the drinking fluids before the anomaly scan; I didn't know whether I needed to have a full bladder or not, so I figured that if I went with a full one at least I could empty it if necessary. The sonographer found it very hard to get measurements due to the position of the baby and how low it was in the pelvis, hence asking me to go outside and drink some more. When I went back in it was higher up, but I still had to lie on my side to enable her to get measurements. Our scan photo is not a great one as a result of baby not playing ball! As I am having scans at 28 and 34 weeks aswell I asked if I needed a full bladder for these as surely baby would be higher up. The sonographer replied that they do ask for a full bladder to get the baby as high up as possible, but at the 34 week point this would probably not make that much difference as a normally presented baby would have it's head quite far down into the pelvis anyway so wouldn't budge much.

DorcasGailen · 20/10/2011 13:12

Have sent a request to join Fb group intitals JW. I will post this on the March Brewers thread as well as it would be nice for us all to be in the same place! (was originally on this thread as JoZambia)

knitterati · 20/10/2011 18:33

Oh NFC that's rubbish. Really sorry to hear that. Are you going to go down the legal route given what your boss said about maternity leave?

Have requested the group on fb - CH initials :)

Treks · 20/10/2011 20:02

cheeseandgherkins I'm not sure what it is normally, but I know it is usually low - it was 82/57 at my booking in, then 90/50 at 16 weeks but I suspect it's dropped a bit more again. I'm trying really hard not to pig out as I don't want to get huge, so any advice on foods that'll raise my blood pressure without making me even more lardy welcome!
NFC really sorry to hear that you are being treated like that i.e. discriminated against. Is there anyone else who does a similar position in your company that you can do a compare and contrast against to see if you can, with evidence, show how you are being treated differently? I suppose ultimately you'll have to weigh up what the offer is against what you would have got on mat leave and how much you've enjoyed your job. A pretty rubbish decision to have to make. Where I work (public sector) we're going through lots of redundancies and people are having to make all sorts of decisions like this at the moment. Although I must say they seem to be treating pregnant and maternity leave people incredibly fairly. (Although I didn't tell people I was pregnant until I'd got through the selection process - I was lucky I was in a position to be able to do this, given the timings).

NotFromConcentrate · 20/10/2011 20:24

Evening you lot :)

Thanks for all the advice, and the good wishes. Basically, they say all sorts of unbelievable things but are slightly more cautious in written communication. I have to go to this ridiculous meeting tomorrow in Manchester, which seems utterly pointless. I'm only entitled to a week's pay (not quite at 2 year's service) and am (cOincidentally?!) missing the SMP cut-off by 2 weeks. Bah humbug.

Hope everyone is well!

ShaggingProducesResults · 20/10/2011 20:34

Oh that really sucks NFC. Even if it's not written down you could still have a case. I look like I could be heading for a payout from mine after the numerous cock ups so it could be worth investigating if you have the time/energy for it.

If everything next week goes to plan I'll actually be better off than if I stayed on and got SMP from them and escaping the dramas of the office 14 weeks earlier than planned. So it could be worth playing the pregnant/discrimination card. At times like these you have to look after number one and sod everybody else. Sounds selfish but.......

Sorry, didn't mean to hijack with my tale of shit employers. I hope that it goes as well as possible tomorrow.

CheeseandGherkins · 20/10/2011 21:11

Treks ooh that does sound low. Mine is usually around 100/58 or thereabouts, I know that salt raises bp but depends how much you already eat. I'm quie a salt fiend as it is.

NFC that does sound really awful, I hope you can do something about it.

Norfolk I'm having scans every 2 weeks from around 24 weeks and I had many scans last time as well and I've never been told to have a full bladder. Baby is so far up by then there is literally no point. It's only early on when the womb is still low in the pelvis that it matters for obvious reasons but once it's grown up enough then the baby is up there too. It just sounds really odd, I've had so many scans in different hospitals as well and most actually ask that you don't have a full bladder so that nothing interferes with the shot of the baby. I find it really odd that you were asked that. I'm on baby number 5 now too and never experienced this!

MakkaPakkasWilly · 21/10/2011 07:39

Treks I am as low as you. The 'cures' are caffiene and salt. (basically anything that raises blood pressure!) but tbh as long as you aren't fainting it's just normal 'for you'

CopperLocs · 21/10/2011 09:49

Hi All, just thought i'd pop in and say hi!

I'm pretty new to mumsnet as I'll be becoming a (single) mum in March '12 for the first time Smile

Couldn't be more excited about this new phase in my life!

Chulita · 21/10/2011 09:49

nfc that's absolute rubbish, I hope you get something out of the meeting today other than a fat slice of 'atmosphere'. Fwiw I think it's shocking the whole 'made redundant 2 weeks before probation period is up' business, happens to so many people and it's shameful imo.

norfolk I've only had to have a full bladder with the first scan, not with the 2nd. Each PCT is different though so we'll see what this one wants when I go for my next scan.

santa hope you're feeling a bit more positive now, it's great that you could see the kidneys working, that's a really good sign!

treks wow, that is low! Mine's always around the 130/75 mark but then I've yet to have it taken without both children in the room which might account for it being slightly higher, esp after waiting with them for between 1-2 hours each time...

buterflies · 21/10/2011 11:55

Hi I am 19wks today with second baby, due on 16th March. Just started to feel baby move over the last few days and getting rather excited. Next scan on 3 Nov and hoping to find out if boy or girl.

CheeseandGherkins · 21/10/2011 12:49

Re bp it's definitely good to be low and not high, high is bad for baby and you but low is just annoying for us! [hgrin] advice would be to stand up slowly too as you can really feel it if you jump up quickly. My bp always drops really low when I'm pregnant except when I had pre eclampsia with dd1.

1 week today until our anomaly scan, I'm not looking forward to it although it will be nice to see the baby and hopefully find out what we're having.

Half term now so the kids are home and it's ds1's birthday next week. Have a few things planned so it should be a good week.

ShaggingProducesResults · 21/10/2011 14:49

Had the scan today and all was good. Mini is very active and was wriggling about all over the place, kicking, waving and we even saw an enormous yawn!! Will try to put a pic on the FB page.

I had to have a full bladder for the scan and here is what I found online

"This can vary a bit from site to site but, in general, early ultrasounds - prior to 20 to 24 weeks or so - do require a full bladder when the transabdominal approach (transducer is placed on your abdomen) is used.

The reason for this is that the fluid in the bladder creates a "window" for the beam to pass through. (This provides a good medium for sound conduction.) It also serves as a "landmark" for the technician to get their bearings, so to speak. In addition, a full bladder can change the position of the uterus, taking the flexion out of it and pushing it up so it is easier to scan. A full bladder also moves loops of bowel up and out of the way to make the pelvic organs easier to view.

In later pregnancy, or with a transvaginal approach, (the probe is introduced into the vagina), a full bladder is not necessary. The enlarging uterus is quite nicely positioned above the pubic bone and the fluid within the sac provides the medium for passage of the beam."

I guess opinion varies but it was in my letter that I needed one. As someone earlier said, better to have one and be able to empty it rather than turn up without and have to delay the appointment to fill it up!!

FlipFantasia · 21/10/2011 15:54

Shagging great news about the scan! Hurray! Interesting about the bladder thing, my letter says there's no need for one so I'll just try not to pee right beforehand.

Treks my BP is usually in that general area as well. Don't know if it's a pregnancy thing or not, as never really get my BP checked at any other time, but definitely get the head rushy type things if I stand up too soon or if I'm hungry so I try to eat little and often (especially fake healthy stuff like the pack of chocolate covered brazil nuts I've just scoffed!) and am a salt fiend (although I don't think salt use in the short term has much impact, still, I love it!). I was reading in my pregnancy book last night that even women with normal BP will experience fainting episodes though, as all of our blood volume has increased so massively but that BP doesn't change a huge amount (except for pre-eclampsia) as vessels dilate more. So something!

NFC hope the meeting wasn't too horrible.

Welcome buterflies and copperlocs Smile. There's a separate stats thread if you want to update with your due dates etc.

Hope everyone else has a good weekend - yay for Friday! Though spent most of the morning at A&E as DH twisted his knee and has torn some ligaments, so is at home with crutches and lots of painkillers. But am about to duck out of work early so weekend starts (just about) now...
