Hello all,
Was directed here by the very kind phlossie.

So I'm 21 weeks in my first pregnancy and we're having a girl. She's been very active lately and last night I felt her kick 'properly' for the first time, as in I could feel it on my hand as I rested it on my bump.

All been going very well so far but we've had (are still having?) a bit of a scare after the 20 week scan last week, when they found a hyperechogenic bowel and not-so-helpfully rattled through a list of all the things it could be a marker for, before finishing with 'but we've probably got you worried about nothing.' Would have been good of them to start with that remark, thanks!!

Still waiting on blood test results as one thing it can be a marker for is cystic fibrosis. Decided against an amnio at this stage but spent a couple of days in a bit of a panic - not helped by the fact I was ill from some kind of infection and had actually lost my voice. Not great when there's something of a big deal you'd like to talk about! Judicious application of antibiotics later and I was feeling more sensible about the whole thing. Fingers crossed on the blood test, and then I'm having another scan in 3 weeks to check on the bowel (as well as a fibroid they're keeping an eye on)....

diedandgonetodevon · 05/10/2011 16:59

Right, I would like to claim the 'Most Uncooperative Baby on the Thread' prize please.

Once again I have a shy baby. This time he/she was face down across my hips and they couldn't see the face. TBH the sonographer pretty much gave up after 5 mins and they have re-booked me again for next week.
Am quite annoyed really that they won't try anything to move the baby- even getting off the bed and jumping up and down. They just decide the baby is not in a good position and give up Angry. I'm quite bored of scans now.

glowfrog · 05/10/2011 17:08

That's a bummer, DiedAndGone - I also have a relatively shy baby but the sonographers have not been shy about prodding it in all sorts of ways to make her move, and it works! It's still a bit of hard work, and we can't get great pictures, but they've been able to do all the measurements, find out the gender etc. I wonder if it's worth having another go at asking they try that for you next time?

Sympathies!

Kayano · 05/10/2011 18:23

A colleague just asked me if I was really pregnant today.

I am wearing my 'podge' outfit. Do not look pregnant but a wee bit chubby lol Blush

I am going to wear my 'omg you are huge!' dress tomorrow Grin

spookshowangellovesit · 05/10/2011 19:09

rnbsmum · 05/10/2011 20:04

Welcome glowfrog - glad you've found us! Sorry to hear you have been dealing with such a lot of stressful things - everything crossed that you get good news from the blood test and scan. Smile

babycarmen · 05/10/2011 20:19

Wow, loads of team pink!!!

I cant wait to find out.. 3 weeks and 6 days to go ahhhhh!!! I will be happy either way but still think its a girl :)

I had a bath and relaxed and eventually cheered up. Very tired today!

22+2

louby86 · 05/10/2011 20:43

Can you tell I've had a day off today with how much I've posted Grin

Just wanted to let you know if anyone is stocking up on anything before baby arrives, I didn't know but you can bulk buy nappies, wipes etc on amazon and it's loads cheaper! Just ordered some bits and bobs!

Kayano · 05/10/2011 21:05

Louby, I have not but oddly DH has developed an obsession with baby wipe! I have boxes and boxes! Lol

glowfrog · 05/10/2011 21:38

I've had lots of people tell me I don't look pregnant as well but I think that's been down to what I've been wearing. I need a badge that says 'I'm not fat, I'm pregnant.'

Thanks, rnbsmum Smile

CoffeeOne · 05/10/2011 21:44

Xav - maybe a private gender scan would be worth the cost for peace of mind? Do take care x

welcome glowfrog!

congrats on your little girl spooks!

20+4

Good to hear others have been having boob issues. In my first pregnancy, they got massive and really sore dead early on, and by this stage had settled right down. I went up a single cup size only. This time, absolutely nothing happened until about 16 weeks, and I'd wondered if they weren't going to given that I only finished breastfeeding 3 months before getting pregnant this time (and had to give up because of nork ache with the pregnancy that I miscarried). But in the last 4 weeks, they've gone nuts! Gone up a cup size and back size and are aaaaaaaching!

Had my first appointment of this pregnancy with my consultant today and it was so helpful. Talked over all the issues I was concerned about after DDs slightly-more-exciting-than-planned birth, and I feel so much happier. The main concern I am left with is that after a rapid birth first time round, she agreed it was likely to be v rapid this time. The triage nurses in our maternity unit are notorious for telling women not to come in when they phone in in labour, and also people get redirected to the next nearest hospital when they're full. I was a bit worried about handling that, but my lovely consultant said thatif I got any nonsense I was just to tell them I had a 2 hour first labour and was coming in and just to do that as soon as I got twinges. She has also written in capital letters on the computerised notes that I am not to be transferred to the other hospital. I am so pleased, as I was pretty worried about delivering on the motorway on the way there. She has promised me that if I turn up at the door then they cannot turn me away. Here's hoping the baby's not in suuuuuuch a hurry as I'm worried about!

InnocentRedhead · 05/10/2011 21:57

Louby, I have to disagree about amazon for wipes and nappies. A pack of Nappies is cheap if they are less than 10p each. I have being scouting every shop for offers on them and I found loads in ASDA the best. 2 for £14 for boxes of 88, I thought it was too good to be true but no. Also from ASDA - a box of 12 packs of huggies wipes £8. I don't think they have the offers on atm, but they should come back around. Also Morrisons buy 1 get 2 free on Johnsons wipes £2 each, I think that is still running. Please shop around, you really can save money. MY DP thinks I have bought too many - think i have bought around 700 nappies all up to size 3.

Welcome Glowfrog, sorry you have dealt with so much so far. We are always here.

Our LO was cooperative yesterday when they managed to get the saggital spine view they needed. Keep looking at the pictures I got, and they are fantastic, his face is so clear! Just beautiful!

Watching pride Of Britain atm in tears, especially this lady who has adopted lots of children and those born addicted to substances too! I remember a thread from a while ago about a woman who brought up a little girl who was born like this, brought back the emotions i remember from reading!

Hope everyone is well. Tonsilitus is calming down, but still ill, I just don't have time to give into it anymore, it has already had 2 days from me :( I know should rest more! I had a a very hormonal moment in public today, rather embarrassing too, so I won't go into it, needless to say I scared a few people.

Squiglettsmummy2bx · 06/10/2011 10:58

Hi everyone, just checking in quickly to say congratulations on all the good scans & hope everyone is doing well.
My mum got backfrom Spain yesterday & was rushed straight to hospital with pneumonia & blood poisoning so I am going to see her now. I see & speak to her every day so it was tough her being away & now this & as she was away with my sister it was all kept quiet from me (whole other thread) but just hoping she is ok.
Love to all your bumps x

phlossie · 06/10/2011 11:13

Your poor mum, squiglett - I hope she's ok.

Congrats on the girl spookshow!

glowfrog I think think that the bowel thing your baby may or may not have is what my friend's scan showed up - her dd also has polycystic kidneys. She was told she could have all sorts of problems, but she didn't - she's a happy, healthy 5 1/2 year old now. Just saying that they tend to map out worst case scenarios with these things. My SIL has Cystic Fibrosis. Are they testing yours and DP's blood - you can't have a child with CF unless you both carry the defect gene. My DH carries it, so there's a 50/50 chance that my DCs do too, but I don't have the gene so there's no chance of them actually having CF.

Right. I'm in bed ready for a nap! DD's at pre-school today, and I'm not working until 2.30pm, so definitely have time for a little snooze!

louby86 · 06/10/2011 11:33

Hope your mum is ok squigglet

Thanks for the tip innocent I shall definitely look around. I didn't get wipes in amazon in the end, got them from tesco, but got over 100 nappies for £11 so not too bad. I'll be price checking on the Internet before I decide which shop to go to now I think Grin

On my phone again so can't remember all the personals I was going to write, I have a rubbish memory Blush back later!

QueenFee · 06/10/2011 12:34

Squiglet my dh had septecemia x I really feel for you hope your mums ok.

As for nappies I hope your not all buying size 1s! Ds2 was in size 3 by 3 weeks old... he was 8lb 9oz born. In fact none of mine fit newborn clothes either straight into 0-3. I reackon this one will be over 9lb if not 10 as Alfie was born at 39 weeks.

Squiglettsmummy2bx · 06/10/2011 13:40

Thank you all. My mum is in a pretty bad way but the hospital is providing great care. I must start buying nappies & wipes but am more into clothes at the moment & am buying 2 outfits a day! Both of my dc weighed 8lb 9oz & dd was 2 wks late & ds 2 weeks early, wonder if I can make it a hat trick?

notcitrus · 06/10/2011 14:24

Re nappies - MrNC observed they have the same pricing structure as crack cocaine... there's coupons in hospital mags and Bounty etc so you should manage to get a couple packs size 1 free, size 2 half-price, then have to pay for size 3 which isn't so bad... but then the number in a pack goes down hugely for sizes 4 and 5 which will be roughly 6 months to potty training! And the price goes up.

Luckily I got given a pile of cloth nappies from SIL and Freecycle which I started using after a week or so - one of the biggest perks was not feeling I'd 'wasted' 20p any time I'd checked a nappy and it didn't need changing, or needed it within a minute of putting on. In the first 6 months I could get 20 nappies in the washing machine so with baby clothes etc anyway it was only another two washes a week and no rushing to the shops to buy nappies. I highly recommend trying cloth nappies as apart from anything else they look adorable!

Also pieces of soft cloth (any old pants or pajamas you want to get rid of... cut into 5 inch squarish bits) were nicer than baby wipes and were great for the first 6 months, just washed with the clothes/nappies - though once I had to deal with Real Poo I bought wipes!

rnbsmum · 06/10/2011 15:55

I'm with you on the cloth nappies issue nocitrus. It felt like a real risk shelling out for them before DD (DC1) was born but they lasted her up to potty training and then were used for DS - they only get softer and nicer with use! I passed them on to a friend who has now passed them back for beanie when she gets here - result!!

We bought motherease which lasts from about a few weeks until 2ish, but there are so many more funky styles around now to choose from than there were 8 years ago. Have to say, I don't think they made any diffeenece to potty training as is often suggested. DD was rubbish and took for ever and DS just woke up one morning saying he'd like to wear pants and that was that.

notcitrus · 06/10/2011 16:30

It was Mothereases I got from Freecycle - ds was the fourth baby to use them and admittedly once he was a year the area where the nippas went was rather worn on some, but I passed them to a friend so Squirmlet will be the sixth baby to use them, at least for a while! They were wonderful at holding in poo explosions - unlike all my mummy friends I had not one leak from 3 weeks to over a year - I just had to buy a couple new wraps.

Once ds was at nursery I invested in a pile of second-hand stuffables and all-in-ones, so all nursery had to do was do up velcro/poppers and it was just as simple as a disposable. Though once a numpty agency worker threw a nappy out - and of course it was the only new nappy I'd ever bought, a fantastic purple velvet Blueberry...

I agree it didn't help with potty training, especially once ds got to the point of choosing what colour he wanted that morning, but luckily they sell Thomas the Tank Engine pants...

I'll stop evangelising now - though Ebay and Clothnappytree sell bargain tiny cloth nappies if you want to to try!

Only one more week until scan. At least I know Squirmlet has a head and forming brain from the previous scan, so whatever the news it won't be the same bad news that SIL had. (she now has two lovely kids, but it was a horrible experience)

ZhenXiang · 06/10/2011 16:48

Sorry to hear about your mum squiglett, glad she got to hospital as soon as she got back to UK and that they are taking good care of her.

You guys are all so on the ball, I have been sourcing newborn clothes, but am waiting for all my 0-3 month onwards back from my niece who had baby recently.

DD was 8lb so was out of newborn clothes after a week and out of size 1 nappies within 2 weeks. I will probably buy a small pack of size 1 and some size 2 nearer to the time, but will hold off after that and see if we can get cloth nappies instead.

Last time round I used cotton wool and water, balls at first then large pads or pleat. Cotton wool pads are far better for drying the bottom as they don't fluff as much.

Only started using sensitive wipes once DD was nearly 2 as she has eczema and would get a rash if I used wipes. I also discovered that she was sensitive to something in Pampers so ended up buying either Asda or Tescos nappies (she still uses Tesco ones at night), they were good for absorbancy and much cheaper.

QueenFee · 06/10/2011 17:23

I am a convert to cloth! I started using them with dc3 at 18 months. I bought all my nappies secondhand and only spent £25 all in!

Really recommend www.tinynippers.com (orco.uk?) Their nappies are cheap but reliable great for starting out. Also check out your local council ours give £75 towatds cloth nappies!

Purpletoes · 06/10/2011 17:56

squiglett so sorry about your mum. Hope she gets better soon.

I have been ok just pottering along am 22 weeks and had scan yesterday and found out we are in team blue!

Heading for a weekend away with cousin and sister on eurostar for a girlie weekend tomorrow can't wait.

Getting a bit panicky reading about everyone who is stocking up already as we haven't bought a single thing yet! Blush

Jeezimacasalinga · 06/10/2011 18:10

Hello everybody, sorry have hardly posted but i do try to keep track of the thread, moves very fast! And there seems to be loads of little boys on the way too Smile Had 20 week scan today and no 3 is pink! Already have one of each so didn't mind either way but still very exciting to know. Anyway, always find the second half of pregnancy seems to go at twice the speed of the first so we will all be popping before we know it!
