GiraffeAHolic · 28/09/2011 13:44

Well I currently have 6 names on the girls side and 4 on the boys side none of which I'm overly in love with.

MakesCakesWhenStressed · 28/09/2011 13:50

Where are you going for inspiration? Fave singers/characters in books and films/family members/friends/Latin meanings etc?

Want to post the ones you have then we can see where you're going with it?

abeautifulbutterfly · 28/09/2011 14:09

Yes, please Giraffe, post them. I love a bit of baby-name fantasising... Especially since we are so cut and dried (though still got a middle to think of).
Fish lucky you, and respect for being so sensible, but do give yourself a little treat!

ghosteditor · 28/09/2011 14:22

oh the quilt is fab! cakes I used cushion stuffing for the nursery cubes and it seemed to work well.

have no energy to respond to the interesting posts upthread - I know I shouldn't complain about the weather but I'm just mellllllllting here at work. I even retired my winter clothes again but I'm still boiling, and it's making me sleepy and crabby. I actually like autumn and I want it back!

Def keen to see some chat about names as we're a bit stumped. We are sorted for our boy shortlist (quite traditional I think) but have an endlessly changing longlist for girls. I made a MN short list months ago, but looking back at it I don't think I like many of them any more. Sigh. Inspire me?

MakesCakesWhenStressed · 28/09/2011 15:00

See my list above of places to find inspiration.
Also worth looking at are people you admire in the public eye and from history.

I especially like taking the name of someone I like and using the opposite sex version, if that makes sense? eg - my BF is Alexandra, but was also bullied for years by an Alexandra, so we actually had Alexander v high on our boy shortlist (it got ditched because DH's name also starts with A and from experience I know it makes the post too confusing!).

So come on ghost - fave books and authors? Films? Singers? Friends?

Right. I am going to power through this exhaustion and make muffins and bread and supper, inc. crumble topping for the fruit I have demanded DH brings home because I am craving a fruit crumble. I tried to sleep, but legs were aching, baby was dancing and nothing was doing, so now it's time to do it anyway and cry later!

ghosteditor · 28/09/2011 15:07

I'm a massive geek and so is DH so I'd love to come up with a name from our fave geeky TV shows (battlestar, stargate, trek, xf for anyone who is interested). However, I wouldn't want to give the poor child a name that would get them teased, so it's a fine balance. I quite like Kara for the BSG connection but it's a previous gf of DH and he's funny about that (he has a lot of ex-gfs by the way Grin).

If only I could pull off having a little Jean-Luc running around Wink

On the literature front it could be the way to go, but I have a penchant for novels about India and the subcontinent and I don't think our child could pull off an exotic name (we have very very white ancestry and the aforementioned Yorkshire accents to contend with). Totally love the name India (nn Indy) but am not sure I'm brave enough. Don't slate it though as it's still on my list Grin

MakesCakesWhenStressed · 28/09/2011 15:19

India is a beautiful name for a girl and there are several Indian origin names that are successfully carried by white people - I have a lovely, very white, friend called Asha, for example.

How about Kari, instead of Kara? Or Kali - back to Indian names again! (That's if you want a goddess of war and chaos running around your house...)

Hrm, I seem to be coming up with more girl names than boy ones...

What about James Tiberius...?

addictediam · 28/09/2011 15:29

Oh I love India but we couldn't pull it off.

My list of names include - Sophie (canter actually use it)

  • kathryn (cant actually use it either)
  • charlotte or lottie (dh hates it)
  • Lilly (too similar to dds name)
  • freya (crazy sils name for her imaginary dd she may have in the future, bear in mind shes single and in her 40s)
  • Emily (dds dolls name)
  • Sarah
  • Emma

And I'm not in love with the only 2 that are possible. (I love lottie!)

MakesCakesWhenStressed · 28/09/2011 15:54

Hrm...

Why does DH hate Charlotte?
Why can't you use the first 2?

Could a spin on ones of those be used? (eg - Sofia)

How about... Flora, Sally, Stephanie (shortened to Steffi/Stephie), Emilia, Annalie (that is a name, right? Or am I think Annaliese?)

That was just me brainstorming random name associations based on the ones you suggested. Let me know if I was totally wrong or on the right tracks and I'll happily play again!

ghosteditor · 28/09/2011 16:16

LOVE the idea of a little Kali running around the place. that's fab!! and probably about right for any child of mine. Would people think it was a quirky spelling of Carly though? Random spellings just for the sake of it are my pet peeve (as you know!)

Love the name Kathryn but it's my best friend's name (also has a Trek link) - just not sure I could do it. Also absolutely love Kitty and especially Kit - but the last is only one letter away from my name. And my name is only one letter away from FiL's. It's all very confusing. Also a fan of Norse god names (another geek thing, don't ask) though for various associations I wouldn't want to use Freya (a schoolmate's sister, and I didn't like either of them).

I may have to think hard about some kind of not-too-quirky Indian name though, you're right!

ghosteditor · 28/09/2011 16:17

while I'm at it I love the name Adithi which is Hindi for 'boundless one'. How totally awesome is that? I worked with an Adithi so I'm not sure if that would be too weird (but who cares what colleagues think, right?).

addictediam · 28/09/2011 16:59

Dd has the same name as a friends dd and her other 2 girls are the first 2 names on my list. I also like lia but dh doesn't.

Dh doesn't like charlotte because (and I quote) 'all the charlottes i know are fat, and she will already be battling with my family's genes.' Dhs family are all on the larger side but i can assure you its got nothing to do with genes!

Ohh I love Kali can I add it to my list?

I don't know any Indian names so cant really help ghost

addictediam · 28/09/2011 17:01

Ment to also say that it doesn't matter what work colleges think, they move on and out of your life, if you like a name use it otherwise you will regret not using it if friends and colleges move away

MakesCakesWhenStressed · 28/09/2011 17:21

I love Kitty as a nn, but not so keen on Kathryn (esp not 9 months after the royal wedding...) so would look at variations of that like Catriona, Katrina, Katerina etc...
Or just call it Christopher if it's a boy and shorten to Kit!

And ghost - don;t worry about the one letter difference, as long as it doesn't rhyme or theme with yours then it's not an issue imho.

Also, anyone stoopid enough to not realise Kali is a name in its own right would probably be into daft spellings for standard names!

And addicted - I hate to agree, but all the Charlottes I know are on the plump side too, although usually very pretty too...

SlightlyScrambled · 28/09/2011 19:01

Cakes; I love your playmat. Beautifully made.

Myself and DH had a mini meeting the other day and decided on the names for either a boy or a girl. It feels great to have them chosen now and I'm not giving a toss about what other people think of them. There will always be somebody who won't like it, can't spell it or can't pronounce it as I discovered with DD. We gave her a name that would work in Finnish and in English but people still get it wrong, so this time round, I just went with what I like. And if anybody is rude enough to say it's not a nice name...

GiraffeAHolic · 28/09/2011 19:23

Well it's all academic now anyway, dh vetoed all but one name on each list :(
Bloomin' man.

I've now got into my head that I need to make some bunting for unnamed baby's room, unfortunately the material only seems to exist in my head. Would like to have a roman blind to match but that is definitely beyond my capabilities :)

addictediam · 28/09/2011 19:26

Lol scrambled my cousin is called Inyan his mum is Finnish and my grandfather (90yo, very stubborn and traditionalist, also not all there anymore :() calls him baby boy [fathers surname] until he is given a 'proper' name. He will not accept that it is a proper name in Finland! (now I've said finland I'm wondering if its somewhere else Confused Blush)

Wormshuffler · 28/09/2011 20:15

Giraffe roman blinds are surprisingly easy, if you buy blind tape its just a matter of measuring out the gaps, attatching the tape, hemming all the way around and threading the poles through the tape! I got detailed instructions with the blind tape I bought which told you the gap sizes you need etc. I have done 4 sets.

We too have been discussing names here is the shortlist:-
Theo- My fave
Zac
Finlay
Noel
Dexter-DH fave but a serial killers name!
George
Elliot
Morgan-both like

Violet Mine and DD12 fave
Lola

redheadbedhead · 28/09/2011 20:45

like Noel / Elliot and Lola / Martha / Orla

my niece is called charlotte!!! and she is definitely not fat! she is a 4yr old super springy and wiry gymnast type!

we had our boys name all down ready to go, and now it's actually happening we both looked at each other the other day and wondered if it would be weird to call a baby by it! does that haopen to all names?? do none of them suit babies? Sad

mummyzoe2012 · 28/09/2011 21:46

hiya all, been a bit busy painting ame's room, we chose gentle lavinder and it looks lush. finally got a date through for the wadrobes to be fitted w/c 17/10 so then we can finally get her room finnished.

Any one going for a 4d scan we have ours booked for 24/10. dp got it for my 23rd birthday wich was last friday so excited to see ame again.

hope everyones ok and the streach marks are keeping away.

ParsleyLion1 · 28/09/2011 21:55

Hi all Smile not posted for a while been on my holipops Grin

Hope all is well with everybody.

Aside from a quick trip to A&E due to headache and swelling hands for 3 hours all OK. Not that they were much help, I should have just phoned the midwife. They said I didn't have pre-eclampsia at the moment but they couldn't say I wouldn't in future! I waited 3 hours for that....

Re names

Theo is my fave for a boy but OH says only if the whole name is Theodopilus P Wildebeast Wink

For girls I've got Eva

Then I'm looking at Indianish names as OH is Sikh. I have Meena but OH hates it. We may stick with a Westernish name as her surname will be Indian anyway.

I'd be slightly careful with Kali as a name. I looked at it and OH said it would have negative connotations.

shonnomanom · 28/09/2011 22:21

Names. What a minefield!

Dp wanted Olivia, from Fringe. Last time we considered Harrison. He insisted on Ford as the middle name. Tiberius was almost mentioned when discussing James.
Definitely agree to avoid royal wedding associated names.

I called the to today about the flu JAG. Even though I had in April they want me to get it updated. Their having an open clinic day on oct26th for anyone eligible to have it then.

fish thank you for your tips. I've popped an online order in for the salts and the cream.
Re: dogs. If they're barking like that, they're distressed. And no, it's not acceptable to keep them in the garden all day - she's probably got them out there so she doesn't have to listen to them/deal with them. I'd still give the rspca a ring. See what they suggest. There's a good chance they won't be interested if the dogs appear otherwise well cared for, but they can give you some advice about how to handle it.

cakes Glad to hear you're a little better

parsley How worrying! I love the basic "well, you're not dead so it's ok" diagnosis (or similar). Really comforting isn't it...

Woke up too early today. Driving lesson in a bit. Really don't want to do it, but hey-ho. Suppose I'd better go get ready.

Have a happy day ladies!

Capybara · 29/09/2011 09:39

Worm and Parsley, Theo (short for Theodore) is also our no.1! In fact it's our only - we've already started referring to him as Theo, which is probably bad luck. I wonder if it's not one of those names that is secretly trending, i.e. not showing up on the top 100 lists at the moment but when he goes to school there will be five other Theos in his class?? Ghost, re. girls' names referencing both scifi and the Subcontinent, I've always thought Padme was beautiful :)

Capybara · 29/09/2011 10:00

p.s. has anyone else suddenly got enormous? I was flying under the radar until about two weeks ago, now I look as if I'm about to give birth. Might be something to do with having started to wear maternity clothes, but still (!) Also really struggling to sleep comfortably. Sometimes I manage to get into a position 45 degrees from horizontal (I normally sleep on my stomach), but Theo doesn't like that much and kicks me until I shift back on to my side :)
