someone I know got a cheap quinny one on ebay, 600 new, she got it for 150

BB3 · 15/08/2011 07:22

Morning all

Just popping in to say hello before the start of another working week! (14 working days left for me - not that I am counting!!!)

Hope everyone is ok

littlepebble so sorry about your nana - completely understand about your desire for her to meet LO. DH's dad was poorly for a long time and passed away two months before DS (his first grandson) was born and DH found that part particularly hard. We knew he wasn't going to last long but I think he always hoped he would last just a little bit longer to meet him. Anyway hope you are doing ok.

I think you are supposed to buy new mattresses for each one but I'm not mainly because with the house move and co-sleeping and DS generally being a bad sleeper up until recently he wasn't in it all that much! I think we paid about £80-£90 (ish) for his cotbed one in BabiesRus.

Hope everyone had a lovely weekend - ours was very chilled and much needed but went FAR too fast!!

EdwardorEricCantDecide · 15/08/2011 08:16

My car has packed in and I really want to cry :-(

BB3 · 15/08/2011 08:54

Oh no Edward do you know what's wrong with it?

SconesForTea · 15/08/2011 10:03

Pebble very sorry to hear about your nana. Get well soon and you too rebel.

We are using the same mattress for this LO as DD is using now, I have absolutely no idea why you would replace the mattress for each child Confused Why on earth would you get rid of a perfectly good mattress that has only been used for a year and a half/two years? I suspect that advice is just part of the whole 'buy buy buy' consumerist society we live in and i'm not going to buy into it

PA you must be getting a little pissed off by now with your bloods saga.

meravigliosa I would be beyond fury in your situation. Hope that you get a doula sorted. I have read that having a doula, rather than your partner, can help make labour shorter and more successful. Best of luck.

Cheshire I thought that our NHS classes (last time) were rubbish unfortunately. I got a lot more from reading childbirth-friendly books.

Edward Sad

I was 30 weeks this weekend and got one of those emails "you are 30 weeks blah blah blah" it said "you may have put on 3 or 4 lb this past month", which was quite funny, as that morning I'd jumped on the scales (why why why???) and found that I'd put on 4lb in a week Hmm Yes I eat a lot of cake but wtf.

EdwardorEricCantDecide · 15/08/2011 10:04

Phew was a flat battery am getting a new one now, DH had said he thought it was alternator which is v expensive, but just battery.
Don't think work will be pleased though when I make it in.

cheekydino · 15/08/2011 10:05

Sorry to hear about your nana, little pebble. Sad thinking of you and your family.

Hope the car isn't unfixable Edward - What a pain.

Re cot mattresses - we had just thrown away our old one when we heard that the new advice is that it is safe to reuse them for siblings and cousins. So we have to buy one too. Can't remember where I found the advice but will post link if I find it on google as it may save some of you some money!

And OUCH - my ribs and back are in agony today - not sure how I can get any bigger and still function. Any tips?

X

BB3 · 15/08/2011 10:46

Phew edward - thank goodness!

We have a VERY old car (it's mine from uni) that DH uses for work as he is on and off building sites and it had it's MOT last week which in my mind meant 1. A bill of hundreds or 2. A new car as it's not worth investing in (it's really not we got hit last year by another car and we just fixed it ourselves rather than waste the insurance money on it!). DH was very excited as desperately wants a new work car and the chugger only went and passed (bar a few bulbs) so £70! I was so chuffed - DH was actually given that we can look properly for a car and part exchange this one for more than we could sell it privately! It's 14 years old though and still good for another year!

Scones - I am now 50inches round! 50! Admittedly I have only put on an inch in the past 10 days (a few weeks before that I did 3 inches in a week) but still - I bet you look practically slinky next to my great lump!

I just made up the moses baskets for these two (still need to get a rocker for the new one) but had washed up all the covers and hood for DS's one that my sister used (and got red hair dye on which still hasn't come out but is not noticeable anymore! Angry!) and found out all the moses basket sheets from DS (most are washed up but a few need a good hot wash), so feeling like we have most things sorted bar the last few bits (rocker, Buggy board for DS, couple of blankets - possibly extra bouncy chair). The only thing they have none of is clothes! Just the tiny baby white set things from asda for when they first arrive! Still I am sure people will buy them lots of things wont they? [bad mother emoticon!]

32 week scan tomorrow - can't wait to see them again! FINGERS CROSSED that placenta has shifted!

Cheeky no advice but if you hear any please pass on!!! Grin

sassy34264 · 15/08/2011 11:01

hi everyone, been awol for a bit. ran out of internet early and also dp came home.
so sorry pebble about your nan. my dp's nan died on the thurs as well. he did get chance to see her though, but she couldnt talk and didnt know who he was. find out today when the funeral is.

i went for my gtt a week ago and they say i have it again. groan. only good thing is, i'll get an extra scan at 36 weeks to check its size. im also waiting on my iron count and water infection. i know ive got one though as the symptoms are very obvious.

BB3 · 15/08/2011 11:21

Hey sassy so sorry about DPs nan - but at least he got to see her even if she wasn't fully there - I know there was a chance he wouldn't get back in time.

What's gtt - am I being really dumb? It's likely! But yay for extra scan. Hope you get the infection sorted soon too.

sassy34264 · 15/08/2011 12:29

glucose tolerance test. i didnt know what it was till last year either, as dd1 is nearly 11 and they didnt test back then. it means i get diabetes when im pregnant- gestational diabetes its called. im fine when im not pregnant.
just got a letter through the post about iron levels- says i need testing further! why? grrr, being pregnant 2 years in a row is starting to test me now!

BB3 · 15/08/2011 12:51

Ah yeah - they thought I had gestational diabetes but just said if I had sugar in my next urine I was to go for a further test didn't know it was called that!

Sassy in all fairness you have 3 kids (including young twins), DP has been away and you have had all the stuff with his nan - I am not surprised your body is struggling a bit. Hopefully they can sort it all out soon but until then REST!!!

sassy34264 · 15/08/2011 13:25

ha. i spent 6 hours walking around chester zoo on saturday- it was the twins 1st birthday. i didnt struggle as much as i thought i would and it was lovely. i was so tired in the car on the way home though i could barely speak! still in pj's today and done nothing apart from feed, change nappies and play. should be putting washing on while its not raining but cant be bothered. Smile
dp is back at work but will prob be back early for the funeral and then he is off again for 2 weeks. which will take me to nearly 33 weeks. im 30 on wed. twins were born at 35+5 so really need to start putting my bag together as i am not quite 7months and i look like im going beyond 9 months right now! wanna make a guess at this ones size? im going say 10lbs 10! and thats me trying to not jinx it by making it bigger!

PenguinArmy · 15/08/2011 13:40

sassy I have no idea how you're coping with 1 yr twins, pg plus the other DC Shock Good luck to you

monkeybubbles · 15/08/2011 16:01

sassy please rest, it's exhausting just thinking about how much you're doing!

i have a question for you experts that already have children, should i bother buying newborn size clothes? i have a few, but am just looking at stocking up on the basics (white vests, bodysuits and sleepsuits) and m&s do a one month size. could i just get all the packs in one month size? or will baby drown in them if they turn out to be small?

also starting to think about packing a hospital bag, went to boots today and bought breast pads, maternity pads and disposable briefs...the things i don't want to think about!

sassy34264 · 15/08/2011 16:44

spoke to hospital and they say i have to be tested again because my iron count is borderline. umph.
monkeybubbles i'm trying to remember the sizes, doesnt 1 month start at around 12lbs? or is it 9lbs? cant go upstairs to check as babies are asleep in cots for nap. could you just buy 1 pack of vests and 1 of sleepsuits and then when baby is born, send someone for more if you need them? its not such a hardship anymore with tesco and asda always within a 5mile radius. Grin

PenguinArmy · 15/08/2011 16:49

they are easy enough to buy if you do have a little one. Look at the weights though, different stores have newborn as different weights. DD was small and in early baby for a while but we had just 4 babygro's and 4 vests which saw us through. I think I remember someone commenting once on the MnS sizes. If you have a few bits already then I'd leave it at that. Buying DD a few bits was a great reason to get out the house in the first few weeks. You have a goal and it doesn't take too long especially if BF as the first feed out can be daunting, so I would feed her and then rush around (as much as you can rush in the first few weeks). Plus 24 hour supermarkets mean you go at a time that suits you.

I recommend the cheap asda knickers. They were great. I only brought a couple of packs of maternity pads which was far too few. think I switched to those cheap bulky san pads after a week or so.

BB3 · 15/08/2011 17:18

monkeybubbles I agree with the others just get few bits in newborn as you just won't know what size is right. They told me DS would be 8-9lb+ he came out at 6.5 so all the newborn stuff drowned him so sent my mum out to get tiny baby stuff (he was born at 41weeks) but was a kittle shorty x you will also get so much from others x Ive just got the asda pack with three vests, three suits hat and mittens etc for each baby in tiny baby size (£7) If they stay in past mid sept I'll grab one in newborn too in case they are over £6 but the rest I'll get when they are here xx

sassy when will they test you again?

bilblio · 15/08/2011 17:43

Monkeybubbles We bought 2 of these newborn essentials packs when we were expecting DD. I only opened and washed one pack though, just in case. We also had some things in 0-3 month size and I took a couple of each to the hospital. The 0-3 month stuff swamped her until she was about 3 or 4 weeks old. Generally I avoid Mothercare, but these are actually quite good value.

Nobody bought clothes as presents in advance because we didn't know what we were having, so once she was born they could get things in appropriate colours, and the right size. She barely wore any proper newborn clothes though, just babygrows.

I don't think I bought her any more clothes myself for months, (actually I bought her 1 outfit, just so that I had.) TBH we still rarely buy her clothes, MIL had 2 sons, so she's enjoying buying for DD :o

cheekydino I'm glad I'm not the only one suffering with rib and back pain. I'm not looking forward to another 10 weeks of these kicks. DD was just as bad though.

I spent last night on the sofa. My brain was whirring trying to come up with money making schemes so I don't have to go back to one of my jobs. Then LO decided to practice the Rumba. I was in a lot of pain with the SPD too having done too much walking this weekend. I think I got about 3 hours sleep.
Thankfully I have a very understanding boss, who trusts me to sort out my hours & a/l myself, so I sent her a text and went back to bed until lunchtime.

monkeybubbles · 15/08/2011 19:05

thank you all for your advice, went through all the things we've received as gifts already, and it seems that most people have been playing it safe and bought in larger sizes, so i should probably get some in newborn size.

LittlePebble · 15/08/2011 19:29

Hey everyone thanks for the kind messages. sassy sorry to hear about DP's nan.
Went to buy a few bits yesterday to cheer ourselves up and nearly went into meltdown in shops as realised I don't know the difference between a sleepsuit and a babygro BlushBlushBlush
Then I tried to look at bottles and breast pumps and got so overwhelmed by all of it we ended up not buying anything!Confused

BB3 · 15/08/2011 20:39

pebble what is the difference aren't they both the all all on one things? God that's awful I've for a child and still don't know!!! Blush

sassy34264 · 15/08/2011 21:09

i will just go to my docs on thurs when the midwives are in bb3 its only the blood test i need doing again, not the gtt. i have an appointment with regards to the diabetes next wed with the consultant.

oh pebble feeling for you. everything seems much worse when you're pregnant and to add to that a bereavement as well, no wonder you are getting flustered. i got all my expensive items- breast pump, listening monitor etc, by reading the reviews on mumsnet for the best ones. i will try to find a link for you or you may know already- so feel free to ignore me, but make sure you look at how many have rated it rather than just the rating. as one person could give a product 10/10 so its number 1, but number 4 could have 1000 ratings at 8.9 iyswim. if i remember rightly a mendula breast pump came out top but they are expensive. i bought a cheapish one though with dd1 and it didnt work, so it is a good idea to research imo.

by the way i think they are one in the same thing too- a babygro and a sleepsuit, unless you are meaning a babies sleeping bag- which i think arw a brillant addition,as they didnt do them when dd1 was born. they are like vests at the top and sleeping bags at the bottom, which you zip baby into and it stops you having to worry about baby wriggling under blankets. they are usually 2.5 tog and again you can get them in tesco or asda.
dont panic or feel stupid if you dont know stuff, just ask on here, esp as its your 1st. i knew nothing at all with my 1st- read every book in my local library i was that freaked out!

PenguinArmy · 15/08/2011 21:17

I think they are the same as well.

with sleeping bags some of them have a minimum weight, we swaddled DD until she was large enough, but they move around too much anyway at first.

pumps can be very personal as we are all different shapes, a cheap manual will do until something more is required. I won't buy one this time unless I decide I want one. Am hoping not to express at all as it was such a chore. Went back to work at 4months (and was part time before that) so am expressed out for now. By the time I go back to work this time DC will be old enough to do without milk in the day.

I have to have some bloods taken for the third time this week. I've ordered a video monitor as need one for DD atm.
