Our old thread ran out of space! The horror!

I guess technically it's not a sponge, but rather a creamed cake. I retract and correct my earlier statement. It is bloody nice though (well unless you don't like coffee cake. It is decaff)!

(Am already thinking of a carrot cake, cause I LOVE cream cheese icing...) (Man I'm going to be huge soon and not with baby!)

KateeHasABunInHerOven · 23/05/2011 15:51

I'll eat nickel's bit Wink

KateeHasABunInHerOven · 23/05/2011 15:52

Actually, thinking about it, I have been pretty much on constant munch since breakfast... mostly fruit though, so not too worried Grin bit of cake would be nice!

Baby2b · 23/05/2011 16:04

Yum, don't really like coffee but love cake enough to eat it anyway Grin

nickelbabe · 23/05/2011 16:04

Grin thanks for correction (steer clear of the food boards when someone mentions a "Victoria Sponge" - that makes me look and sounds like a pressure cooker! Blush )

Katee, you can definitely have my bit.

I had Ben and Jerry's after lunch....

cowboylover · 23/05/2011 18:02

I am all excited over this talk of cake so Mum is going to make me some now she's running out of things to keep her busy worrying what's happening with me!

I went to see the consultant today and still no signs at all or progress with a bishops score of 2 so still unsweepable.

Booked to go in for induction tomorrow so I'm not as scared anymore and just excited today after a really good discussion about the process and how they can meet as much of my original birth plan as possible.

vallinnapod · 23/05/2011 19:20

Ohhh lots of excited and good luck hugs Cowboy!

I could easily lick several carrot cakes clean of cream cheese icing. Nom, nom, nom!!!

Got a boob question! Well a breast feeding accessory question. Are nipple shields an essential? Already have the advice that a couple of small bags of peas are better than the cooling pads but I was thinking short of wandering around bare chested once if I get really sore nipples what do you do? Also some are sized...this just Confused me!

Baby2b · 23/05/2011 20:07

Very exciting Cowboy! You are obviously too good a hostess, so the baby is not for budging on its own. :) Glad your discussion went well with them and that they are still following your birth plan.

Vallinna I have no idea Confused

Dynababy · 23/05/2011 20:44

Ooohh good luck Cowboy I really hope it all goes well for you! Let us know how you all are when your back on your feet.

Valinna simlarly Confused by nipple shields .. i bought some mediums cos how would you know ??

vallinnapod · 23/05/2011 21:14

LOL I was going for medium too on the basis I think I am Mrs Average! The Medela ones tell you that small it 1.6cm amd medium 2cm but what the hell would I be measuring?!

takethatlady · 23/05/2011 21:49

Ah I can't believe I missed a day of cake chat. DH's mum is an expert cake maker and she made fairy cakes, chocolate fudge cake, Victoria sponge, lemon drizzle cake, and cheery cheesecake for the baby shower. All I ate on Saturday was cake. Then I went to my friend's baby's christening and she gave me more cake. So I ate cake yesterday and again today. I am made of cake Grin

cowboy wooohooo! Your LO will be here long before the weekend! How exciting :)

Oh my God I have nipple pads but didn't even see sizes. What's the difference between a nipple pad and a nipple shield? (Sounds like a joke that needs a punchline ...)

Eskarina · 23/05/2011 21:58

mmm cake...
Though am actually feeling quite grim today - combination of stomach acid and having a cold made me feel really sick. That and having to give a presentation to parents to teach them how to teach their kids to read. I'm not good at talking to adults. I tend to either go all nervous, or talk to them like they're about 4 (which is what I do all day, what with teaching 4 year olds!)
We were supposed to be having the nappy lady come round this evening, but I rang and cancelled. Anyway I've bought a set of nappies since booking her in so it's less necessary now.

I hadn't realised nipple sizes was another thing to add to the list to figure out!! I'm planning on BFing so was a bit blase about needing anything. Seems I'm wrong! Looking at breast pumps was on my list of things to do soon...

Midwife tomorrow am so actually get a lie-in.

KateeHasABunInHerOven · 24/05/2011 08:46

Morning viroids! Sounds like cake all round last few days.

In other news I seem to have been struck down by the dreaded PGP/SPD - I've had achy hips on and off for a few weeks now, but had a really bad day on Friday where I had to sit in uncomfortable seats all day, then a horrendously long train journey home and I think it has now set in. I was ok over the weekend, a bit achy at work yesterday, then did something to my left hip last night and now they along with my lower back and upper thighs are aching like buggery Sad

Anyone have any tips? I've been trying to keep my knees together getting in and out of bed, the car etc.

Talking of nipple pads... I've taken to wearing a couple of large cotton wool pads in each bra cup just to stop them chafing, ouch! Grin

Eskarina · 24/05/2011 08:51

Ouch Katee I hope the hips get sorted somehow. I forget how many weeks you are, but I had hip pain for about 12 hours at the weekend, thought SPD was setting in and that was enough to drive me mad, so I don't know how I'd cope with it for the next 12 weeks. No tips but lots of sympathy!

I've made my own breast pad type things by sewing circles of t-shirt material to some fleece for the drippy stage I'm at now (TMI I know) and thicker ones with a layer of towel in between for later on. A bit like [http://www.minkinappies.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=31_58&products_id=540 these]]. Made some washable wipes as well whilst I had the machine out. I'm hoping that when I'm on mat leave I'll have more time for making things, as I do enjoy it.

My Flips arrived this morning. Very happy!

KateeHasABunInHerOven · 24/05/2011 08:54

Thanks esk, I'm 19+2, so still a looooong way to go. Have docs appt booked for a week today, hoping for a quick physio referral, but knowing my docs I will be told its all in my head Hmm

Yay for the flips, what colour(s) did you go for?

Eskarina · 24/05/2011 09:33

I bought mine pre-loved (though unused) so I had no choice in the colours. There are 2 each of noodle, sweet, twilight and butternut, so completely B/G neutral. I'm happy with the colours, though I might have preferred the brighter ones. Would have to stay away from the bright pink though as Squig wouldn't show us his/her "bits" when we had the scan so we don't know what we're having.
Hope you get the SPD sorted - a week seems a long time to wait for a doc appt. Can you drop in to see your mw any earlier than that?

vallinnapod · 24/05/2011 10:15

Esk would you like to come to my house for a bit Grin. Can I ask you to share TMI - when did the dripping start? This is something I am a bit paranoid about and thought would probably only really be a concern at 35 weeks plus.

I have some lovely washable breast pads I got on eBay from a seller called Little Lamb (they also make reusable nappies). They are uber soft. Will stock up on some disposables too, just in case, but it seems there are horror stories about every brand being uncomfy etc. A friend recommended Johnson & Johnson ones...wondering if I will regret it if I am just a tight arse about it and go for the cheapest?!

There are pads, shields and shells as far as I can see. Pads seem to be there for the average leaker to stop embarassing top stains. Shields seem to be like bottle teats for your boobs when you are cracked and sore and want to deny your newborn food as a result. I think the feed through them as you wear them and it gives your nips a couple of days semi-rest. The shells I orginally thought were to stop your war-torn nipple chaffing on anything (which may possibly be the case) but it also looks like they collect milk if you are a heavy leaker. I probably need to stand corrected on most of these assumptions!

Katee - I hope the aching passes. SPD has been one of my worrieds throughout (becuase not only do I worry about actual symptoms/lack of but the potential to get things too Smile). I had some major ache-age the other night in bed where my thigh bone joins my hip but it did pass after just the one night. Earlier on (10-16 weeks I think) I got lots of fanjo aching which I thought may have been the start but that too past. Sorry - not being smug, hoping it all passes for you too! I hope you doctor listens to you.

nickelbabe · 24/05/2011 10:20

ttl - i nearly didn't, but you know me! (pedant alert!!) "Victoria Sponge" doesn't exist - the cake is called "Victoria Sandwich" - it's a creamed cake, and cannot be a sponge becuase a psonge by definition has little or no fat. A Victoria Sandwich has equal parts eggs, fat, flour and sugar.
as you were.

nickelbabe · 24/05/2011 10:22

I'll never understand why bra manufacturers make bars with seams right across the nipple.
and then they use that horrid, scretchy nylon seam tape to cover it!
if they're going to put a seam across, why can't they do it inside out? so that the flat part is against the nipple, and therefore doesn't scratch?

vallinnapod · 24/05/2011 10:41

None of my bras have that Nickel but having tried several brands of maternity bra I will never understand that stupid edging they put round the band and some times the bra straps - it is only decorative but looks and feels like chainsaw teeth....the cups of the bra I have on today have some, not-hugely-decorative, bits of 'lace' on them which seems to only serve the purpose of rubbing on my sunburn Grin

nickelbabe · 24/05/2011 10:55

yes, al lfabric that isn't cotton has the effect of chainsaw teeth!

why can't they just stop doing the "ooh it looks pretty" and start doing the "ooh, that feels nice"?

I have to wear bras with seamless cups, because of the itrritation, and tehy're not as supportive when they're not underwired.

ConfessionsOfAnAchingFanjo · 24/05/2011 12:21

I was just ogling breast pads in boots an hour ago Grin. Vall You're right about the pads being for soaking up leakage and the shield being for allowing baby to feed off of damaged nipples. No idea about the shells though sorry. I used J&J when BFing DS and had no problem with them (apart from cost). And believe me I didn't just leak, I spurted all over the place, so I needed them (hence the earlier ogling). I will likely be trying the cheaper brand ones this time. Knowing my leakage history not sure I want to try reusables as I can foretell laundry uselessness incidents resulting in big big wet patches Grin.

Nickel JojoMamanBebe do several seamless mat/nursing bras you could look into (and get the MN discount on).

It turns out that cake is now on the list of foods (along with chocolate and peanut butter ) that gives me horrid acid reflux. Still hasn't stopped me eatting a tiny little great big piece before lunch Grin

Speaking of cake TTL your cake list nearly stopped my brain in it's track. YUM!! Feel free to send you MIL around here!

nickelbabe · 24/05/2011 12:51

I will go and have a look.

I was just reading a book in my shop aimed at men becoming dads.
there was a bit saying that his wife used to ring up at random saying she'd seen someon eating a cucumber sandwich etc, and wanted him to go to the shops on the way home to get the ingredients so she could have one. My mind went "I want a cucumber sandwich!"
(i thought I'd moved past that one!)

SleepyCaz · 24/05/2011 13:03
