Orchid12 · 22/05/2011 14:36

Happy Birthday mini GG (and The Lad?). Let's make it a hat-trick rocket and say Happy Birthday to sprout too!

Sending brilliant, chilled labour vibes to rocket

StiffyByng · 22/05/2011 16:41

Come on, Rocket! And I was where you are a few days ago! Am so excited that there's such a laying fest on!

Thank you all for the congratulations and kind words last week. Sorry it's taken so to come and say that; I find Mumsnet on my phone tricky for some reason and haven't been near the laptop.

Anyway, Edith was born on Tuesday morning in the bathroom, with me kneeling next to the cat litter tray and the loo. I started 'latent labour' on Friday evening. Everything looked great at first-regular contractions, manageable with breathing and TENS, increasing regularity. We hit the magic 3/10/45, filled the birth pool and called the midwife, only to find I was only 2cms, as I had been at my sweep that morning, and nowhere near active labour. Three days followed of regular contractions, lots of attempts to forget about it all and relax(!) and a succession of false alarms. Most of the wonderful
midwives in my practice have now had the pleasure of examining me. Halfway through, one midwife spotted that the baby previously considered well-positioned now had a potentially problematically positioned head. This now became the focus. Three different midwives had three opinions on the issue but the suggestion that the baby might struggle to be born, and/or that it would never put enough pressure on the cervix to start labour off was being bandied around. The midwives remained very supportive but by Monday I'd been labouring at fairly intense levels, with only the TENS and (god bless the kind midwives) the birth pool, without sleep, for three days, and as I was 42 weeks on Tuesday, with an induction booked, we all decided that I couldn't continue beyond that. On Monday I did inversion positions and had a home visit from a very vigorous acupuncturist (worth thinking about, Rocket?).

MrByng and I decided that we would bow to the inevitable, and try to be positive about the induction. I managed to get about 40 minutes sleep and woke up in the worst pain yet. MrB had to persuade me to call the midwife, rather than head straight to the hospital. She arrived and to all our jubilation, examined me and pronounced me 5/6cm. I was handed the gas and air and hunkered down in the pool. I can
honestly say that from that point onwards I didn't feel more than discomfort, and I positively enjoyed most of it. From that point to Edith's appearance was about five hours, and I was feeling pushing sensations as soon as my waters broke, around two hours in. I was taken out of the pool during pushing as I couldn't find a good position in there. Once sat on the loo, it all happened very quickly!

She was born with her hand up, making her a compound delivery, and perhaps explaining the odd head positioning. I had second degree tears but no stitches, and the whole experience was magical really. She weighed 9lbs 1oz, to everyone's astonishment. The midwives admitted afterwards that they thought a home delivery wasn't going to happen and we were all on a high.

So, very best of luck, Rocket. More than one person has said the sleep may have been what got me dilating so get lots of rest! And thanks again, ESHes, for all the fab support. Muser kept me posted!

rocketleaf · 22/05/2011 17:32

Aww now I understand the DHB comments styffy you bloody trooper!! Very very well done!! My problem is a MW won't come out and see me until I am in active labour and that doesn't deem to be happening. Plus they are reluctant to examine me in case of infection because the membranes have gone and I am on a bit more of a tight schedule. But I, like you were, am resigned to the induction tomorrow so yes I am hoping with that in mind I can get some kip tonight and who knows somat might happen then. Plus I also have the option of postponing the induction again if sprouts assessment is all good in the morning and I feel I can go on.

Plus the tens machine pads the hossie gave me don't fit the one I have and I am no where near ready for the pool so I don't really have any pain releif options apart from OTC. Gutted about the tens as I think that would have helped a lot!!

CurlyCasper · 22/05/2011 17:47

congrats and bloody well done stiffy now bring that birth story over to the CRESH and get yourself a well deserved cocktail, jacuzzi and rest!

laurielou · 22/05/2011 18:13

Stiffy That is a birth story & a half! Congratulations again.

Rocket I'm sending all my easy, sneezy vibes your way. Even though it seems to be delaying my lay Grin. Seriously, whatever way it goes, I hope it goes well. Will be thinking of you loads.

Happy Birthday to MiniG.

What a fab day!

StiffyByng · 22/05/2011 18:58

Rocket, can you send someone out to a pharmacy for emergency pads/machine? My midwives let me use the pool well before most would, so I was very lucky with that-their view was that it's not really that different to a bath. They didn't stay with me till labour was established-all the call outs were when we thought each time that I was. I can see why they're nervy about the VEs for you. I think I was doing such a good impression of being in labour it was their only way of working out what was happening! I really, really hope the mind trick works for you tonight. Lots of babies seem to respond well to the deadline!

Thanks, chaps. The CRESH you say? Will do, as soon as I'm back on the laptop and can c&p.

rocketleaf · 22/05/2011 19:07

TB stuck the used ones with micro pore, not exactly hygienic but I am beyond caring and they are doing the trick!!! Sorry for mememe moaning. I am so glad The Lad is with us now! am thinking if score and looking forward to reading all about it.

Thanks for sending me your sneezy vibes all of you and especially loulou. Going to sign off now and concentrate/chill

Medee · 22/05/2011 19:11

Tens was brilliant in early labour.

Ginfox · 22/05/2011 19:14

"Sorry for mememe moaning"? We'll allow it this once, especially as you're IN LABOUR! Silly moo. Grin

Here's hoping the Sprout follows Edith's lead and pops out in the nick of time. Some babies obviously prefer to work to a deadline.

Orchid12 · 22/05/2011 20:13

Fabulous name Stiffy- and what a trooper you are! Sounds like a long haul labour, but gald you had the home birth in the end.

Rocket - Crikey, no blooming need to apologise. I second Gins sentiments! Hope this evening sees some more action for you.

StiffyByng · 22/05/2011 20:15

Exactly. MORE mememe, please.

And more thanks. Thanks!

MadameBoo · 22/05/2011 21:36

Loved that magnificent birth story SB, and such a beautiful name you have called your little girl. What happiness in PESHland today :)

Truffkin · 22/05/2011 22:39

Great to hear from you Stiffy many congratulations on the safe arrival of baby Edith. Sounds like you did an amazing job of getting her here.

Rocket sending overnight movement vibes to you and hope everything conspires to see you snuggling sprout at home

Very excited at the Lad's arrival

AlpinePony · 23/05/2011 07:24

Stiffy Massive congratulations - I think it sounds fantastic (not the long, drawn-out bit obv. Wink) but to give birth to your daughter your way, in your house. Bliss!

I hope that as rocket hasn't posted overnight to say she's off to hossie that it means things have gone well! :)

laurielou · 23/05/2011 07:43

Big love Rocket's way today. Despite it leaving no-one for me to hide behind now

AlpinePony · 23/05/2011 08:03
AlpinePony · 23/05/2011 08:03

We're all looking at your cervix laurie.

LadyGoneGaga · 23/05/2011 08:15

Lovely birth story, Stiffy - although sounds very tough. I had a mere 32 hour labour with miniG and was absolutely shattered at end so nuff respect!

Am delighted to read the Facebook news

And like, Alps am hoping no news is good news with Sprocket and that baby is out/coming out imminently.

I'm still no. 5 - that gives me ages, right? Smile

MadameBoo · 23/05/2011 08:56
Ginfox · 23/05/2011 09:09

Morning everyone.

LadyG you have got MONTHS to go yet, as have I. Although considering how much weight the Foxcub is going to put on between now and then, that is not necessarily reassuring.
