IMO 99% of homebirth transfers are due to either the mother wanting more pain relief, slow labour progress (so not an emergency, meconium in the waters (not usully an emergency). Because you have a midwife to yourself, they are usually very quick to pick up deviations from normal and are generally too quick to transfer rather than too slow, so I wouldn't be overly concerned about a long transfer time. I did one homebirth where an ambulance was waiting outside just in case sh needed to transfer (she had had a previous cesarean and it was a rural area)

I am definetely haveing a home birth this time, barring major disasters!

Anyone going to have a big gap? There will be 8 years between DD and this baby, not really sure what to expect!

S x

LittleBeaut · 19/01/2011 09:23

My eldest is 8 Selina and my youngest is 7 but we have a lot of little ones in the family niece's and friends babys that we are very close to so my boys will be fine... they love babies actually Grin

I have decided to tell them when I have the results in for my bloods and I know everything is A-ok. When's everyone else planning on telling their kiddies... if they havent already?? x

SMummyS · 19/01/2011 09:28

Were telling my DSD(5) after my scan. Her mums not going to make life easy and DP didn't want me put under any more stress, I can't wait to tell her, but dreading the kick back

spilttheteaagain · 19/01/2011 09:36

Thanks selina your experience is very helpful! Lots more time to umm and aaah about it all fortunately.

Clothes wise I have been in my mat jeans since 4 weeks (but only because they are in my cupboard from last time, I wouldn't have bought them yet I don't think), because I find in early pregnancy with all the nausea I can't stand proper waistbands so like having loose elasticated ones. By the time the sickness passes I need the mat jeans on size grounds! Those of you trying to make your normal clothes last a bit longer - I recommend bump bands, 3 for £10 in New Look for letting you hide your top trouser button being undone and your riding up tops!

KTisPG · 19/01/2011 09:40

I've told mine (DD 5, DS 2.10). Mainly because we've already told loads of people and I didn't want them hearing it from someone else. DD was very cross and DS didn't seem to even acknowledge it, but then came back and asked questions later.

SMummyS · 19/01/2011 10:04

KTisPG did your DD come round? I'm worried DSD will react like that... We want to get her involved but there's not much for her to do till we do the room may/June time

dundeemarmalade · 19/01/2011 10:40

we've started the process of booking an independent midwife and sorting out a home water birth. local community midwives not much use - eg. when i had my nhs booking appointment and she weighed me, did so with all my clothes and coat and shoes on - so ended up being nearly 2 kg heavier than i actually am, and she then measured my height two inches shorter than i am, so i ended up with "pre-obese" bmi and she started muttering about not suitable for birth centre booking. wtf???
doesn't exactly fill me with confidence, and i was even more convinced that raiding the savings for independent mw is right thing for us.

dundeemarmalade · 19/01/2011 10:43

oh yes, and have just signed self off for 6 days (longest allowed w/o gp's note) cos I'm sooooo tired and nauseous. was pretty bad last time, but this time whenever i have to get up a wee in the night (every two hours!) i wake up starving hungry and therefore have to go and dry-heave for ten minutes before having another sodding cracker.
all leaves me exhausted to point of insanity: keep yelling at dd for really minor things and feel like terrible wife/mother/lecturer [sad}.

KTisPG · 19/01/2011 10:54

SMummyS I haven't mentioned anything to DD since that conversation. I'm sure she will come round by the time the baby comes. I was in two minds whether to tell them now anyway because it is such a long time off (pregnancy equivalent of "are we there yet" Grin).

I kind of take the view that she is entitled to feel however she does and I will respect that, until it starts affecting her behaviour IYSWIM.

Teladi · 19/01/2011 11:56

I just outed myself at work, crap... I shouldn't have said anything. Everyone had guessed anyway as I've been puking and all sorts. But I now feel like I've somehow jinxed myself or tempted fate or something, saying anything to confirm or deny at 9+3. :( Nothing I can do about it now anyway, it's not the law that you have to wait until 12wks... just need to remind myself of that. I'm so irrational at the moment. Aargh!

SMummyS, my clothes are also starting to not fit... I woke up with a little bump a couple of days ago. I work in an office where casual dress is usual. At the moment I'm just wearing my longer and baggier tops, but my jeans are starting to get uncomfortable. If I wore maternity jeans though it would just look silly. Not sure what to do, I guess maybe I should go shopping at the weekend.

Firawla · 19/01/2011 11:59

i will probably tell mine after scan i think, cos people know and may be talking about it infront of him, he is only 2 and a half so you kind of think oh they wont notice what we're talking about, but possibly he would, so might aswell tell him. doubt ill get that much reaction though?

dundee i would maybe bring that up with the midwife and tell her to do it again! as it seems quite out of order? whats the cut off for birth centre, maybe it depends because i am a bit fat (especially after putting on 1 stone already!!) so i had it in my mind oh maybe they will say no birth centre because i heard they dont let you if your bmi goes too much, but midwife didnt mention that at all and said will be fine for birth centre unless i wanted epidural. in your case its not even your real bmi she is basing it on, so i would be really annoyed, just seems incompetant.
if you get an independant midwife are you going for homebirth instead though?

Teladi · 19/01/2011 12:06

I forgot to say, thanks for all the birthday wishes the other day!

SMummyS · 19/01/2011 12:06

teladi I'm same as you got a bump (it's hard too) don't know if my cysts have anything to do with it. I don't want to go into maternity trousers yet but by dinner my work trousers are so uncomfy.

How did you out yourself?

Rehune · 19/01/2011 12:11

SMummyS I've been kinda getting away with my tunic type tops for work and it's husband's track pants and hoodies at home. I did go to H&M yesterday and get a couple of tops in a size up. Luckily the fashions at the moment seem to be for roomy clothes - like you I didnt want to tempt fate either so didnt buy actual maternity stuff.

However, the main thing i have had to buy were new bras. Have gone from a B cup to what I suppose are officially called Bazoonkas and everything I owned had underwires so...that was the main expense

KTisPG · 19/01/2011 12:36

I'm already in maternity at 9 weeks but that is mainly because I ate like a pig at made the most of Christmas. I'm running an event in the middle of February which will require me to wear smart clothes all week in the office (I normally work from home and slum it) and I'm already worrying about what I'm going to wear.

LittleBeaut · 19/01/2011 12:37

I'm telling work once the test results come back ok too. I have told my boss like and she is ok(ish) about things so the hard works over with I reckon.

I have been on the New Look website (thanks splittheteaagain and they have some nice maternity stuff, and a few bits are in the sale. But may go down and treat myself to something on Friday after my scan if I have the time, as our New Look stocks quite a lot of the maternity stuff.

Ooooh 2 more sleep to scan!!! Grin

dundeemarmalade · 19/01/2011 12:40

Firawla yes, am going for home birth with independent. when i got home i weighed my shoes/coat/jeans and deducted that from the weight mw had written in my notes. and corrected my height, so turns out bmi is 24.3 Hmm.

tbh didn't kick off when she started mumbling about not being low risk as am about to disappear from the nhs system anyway when independent mw takes over in a couple of weeks, so don't know whether she really meant it. i guess asking birth centre/mw led unit directly is the only way to guarantee a straight-ish asnwer! but even if you end up with consultant led care that doesn't mean you won't have a good-enough birth so don't panic.

KTisPG · 19/01/2011 12:41

I had to tell my boss as soon as we were back in January because I was supposed to be running an event in India in March and obviously I can't go now because I can't have any of the injections I'd need. Not that I fancy Delhi belly much with pregnancy Grin. She was great, very supportive, but she did make me tell our big boss myself (I was hoping she would do it for me). Actually though, he was lovely too, although his first question was when will you be back. In a way that's quite nice though - at least they want me back and there is no question that I won't be returning as DH is a SAHD

sisterT · 19/01/2011 12:49

Hi all!

I'm waiting for my bloods and scan in 10 days before saying anything at work. I'm having a formal nuchal assessment as I'm so ancient Shock and dont want to tempt fate. My DS will be 2 in August, so i thibk we will worry about telling him a bit later on/as I explode grow.
My work clothes are most comfy luckily - NHS pyjamas!! I'm living in tracky bottoms and rugby shirts at home - or, as now, sitting on the sofa with jeans buttons and zip undone - nice!!!!

LittleBeaut · 19/01/2011 13:02

So one of the fella's at work has asked me how my love life is - eeeek!! Bless him I'm sure he was only taking an interest but still... how embarassing?? Blush

Mmm... pot noodle today - chicken and mushroom mmm... I forgot how lovely they are mmm... Grin

MonaPomona · 19/01/2011 13:07

KTisPG re the noise with an HB, from my own experience, I did not make any loud noises at all certainly not screaming, it was not really painful at all, just intense (and a bit uncomfortable/hard work) -probably due to being a 28 hour labour all in, endorphines must have been high so noise is not something I'd worry about.
It's lovely to see others planning an HB too. We moved after having ds so I dont know the local MWs attitude to HB, hope they are supportive. I did hypnobirthing last time, but some friends have raved about natal hypnotherapy - does anyone have any experience of this?
I am wearing my elasticated waist clothes only, no trousers as they no longer fit. TBH everything was a bit too tight even before getting pg and I Was about to embark on some serious exercise prog - phew saved by the sperm!

Hersetta · 19/01/2011 13:15

Wow...chatty lot. I have 24 hrs off and you lot have filled nearly 3 pages!!

I have just come back from my private nuchal scan at the fetal medicine centre. I was very lucky to be seen by Professor Nicolaides himself. The results were even better than I had hoped. My blood work was excellent, the nuchal fold, reverse flow in the heart valves and the whole scan looked great so I have a lower risk now than when I had DD 3.5 years ago.

He even asked if we wanted to know the gender and we said yes. He said he was pretty sure it was another girl!

Very happy and relieved and have jut told work, so am now out of the closet officially!!

Will tell our DD tonight. Am sure she will be delighted. We have been preparing her and she has been saying she would like a baby brother /sister.

KTisPG · 19/01/2011 13:52

Thanks Mona. I seem to remember making quite a lot of noise with DS especially during crowning, hence the concern about the neighbours. I think I'll just go for it and hope that when the time comes I'll be so focused I won't care.

dundeemarmalade · 19/01/2011 14:00

KTisPG i'm worried about being noisy too, esp. as dh reckons the best place for a pool is the conservatory: not very well insulated for noise.

let's hope we don't moo too much!

littlemissw · 19/01/2011 14:01

Wow Hersetta What great news AND you got to find out the sex! Congratulations on your pink bump!

I got my NT/dating scan date through this morning(7 Feb) & was really annoyed to find out that I'll be over 13 weeks pg by that time (and that is if my dates are correct and I'm not further along than I think I am). It seems aaaages away! :(

My DH obviously realised how upset I was & booked me a private scan! How lucky am I? Awww, he loves me despite my unreasonable rage at the moment! :o
